Is Epiclet a real word?
GraXXoR20 March 2019
The quality of this entire production from start to finish is so far beyond what used to be an almost derogatory term, "TV," that it's almost comical.

From the animation quality, that at times I had me forgetting it was CG, to the acting and the wonderful, subversive storyline that fooled me into thinking I was watching a full blown movie.

This is one of the highlights of the season.

No sci-fi fan should go without seeing this mini epic.

Alastair Reynolds on TV!
graygeneral19 March 2019
My rating is based on the quality of Reynolds original material, a short by one of the great living SF writers, Beyond the Aquila Rift.

The plot is classic - there's a glitch in the ancient alien jump gate system humans have been using to traverse the universe, one that sends our hero far, far out in the dark.

Even die hard science fiction fans are often unfamiliar with the short fiction of their favorite authors. Its a thing, probably something to do with the epics we all started out with. Here's your chance to read it in CGI. If you feel the sense of wonder watching this 15 minute story do yourself a favor and read the original. There's an audio book out too, it'll have you pulling over at a rest stop, mark my words.

Together In Electric Dreams
southdavid9 April 2019
I've decided to review each of the short films that make up this series individually.

When a hyperjump goes wrong, Starship captain Thom (voiced by Henry Douthwaite) awakens to discover his ship is on a mysterious spacestation captained by Greta (Madaline Knight) who is Thom's former lover. Incredible as all this seems, it's only made worse when his navigator (Rebecca Banatvala) wakes up and begins ranting that all is not as it seems.

At times, this one is genuinely the most staggeringly realistic bits of animation I've ever seen. The human forms in this are rendered and move with stunning realism. The use of mixed focus helps to sell that as camera work, rather than artistic choices too. It is tremendous.

For perhaps the first time in this series too, the story and plot of the episode are worthy of the animation that goes with it. It's nothing too original admittedly, but its execution is near perfect and its bleak fate-accepting ending is excellent.

THIS is Sci Fi Horror - Done Perfectly
Mtoomb17 March 2019
What starts out as a straight "hard" science fiction story along the lines of Mass Effect, takes a turn for the surreal in this immaculate short.

A truly shocking ending, the kind that sticks with you because it touches that one last nerve you thought no silly animated short could ever touch.

This short and Suits need to be turned into series, NOW.

For some reason, this story chilled me to the core. Out of all of the episodes, this one will probably stick with me for years to come. I couldn't (can't) stop thinking about it, hours later.

Just insane. The CGI is just out of this world, on level with ep 1. The story is just hauting and shocking. Best ep so far. Brilliant.

Amazing: CGI, Story, ending, writing, acting, sex scene, plot.

This is the coolest storyline I have watched in a long time. I would pay good money to see this turned into its own series. Amazing!

I will never forget this episode
hellosoda14 April 2019
The ending was so immensely chilling and shook to to the very core of what I find scary. The number one fear of mine is knowing that you are so soul-crushingly far away from any sort of safety that all you can do is lay in shock at what hellscape awaits you. I cannot find words to describe how hard this hit me. It's my every nightmare realized on screen, and I would watch it again.

By far the best of the bunch
MoistMovies17 March 2019
Really Interesting World building done successfully in a less than 15 minuets. Check

Compelling characters. Check

Originality and emotional engagement. Check

Exploration of themes yet to be touched on in cinematic science fiction. Check

Philosophical questions asked without pretentious sentiment. Check

Leaves you wanting more from the universe and creator of the short. Check

Lacking sentient yogurt overlords. Minus. But nobodies perfects. (the yogurt short was probably a close second)

How to let people give up resistance
lihaji25 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In order to better control the people, the rulers generally make up some beautiful dreams/liees for the people and let people give up resistance. Some people will have doubts, the rulers will adjust their dreams/lie, and sometimes take some intimidation until the people completely give up resistance.

Stunning Animation
PlymDave19 March 2019
Firstly, this looked phenomenal. The problem with ultra realistic, computer generated humans is they can never get the mouths right, it's the one thing that always gives it away. There were times during this episode that I forgot I was even watching an animation. Based on a short story that I've never read, yet I feel like I've seen a million times. Not necessarily the fault of the story, rather that this branch of sci-fi has been very well trodden (Matrix, Solaris...). So perhaps for me I've just seen it too many times and the impact was minimal. Still...looked absolutely phenomenal

Slick visuals
muamba_eats_toast3 June 2019
Had to pinch myself that this was animation and not real people at times. Visually breathtaking and a nice soundtrack to. The story isn't quite up to scratch with the visuals though although is reasonable and passes by.

If you like uncanny valley sex then I guess maybe you'll like this
micahkafka29 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't good. The dead eyed creepy humans are more terrifying than the "twist" ending. For a short film, spends more time with a pointless sex scene than it does humanizing any of its characters. Honestly, I think the entire thing was made for the horror shot of the "monster" at the end and an excuse to do some almost but not quite photo realistic nudity. Major spoilers follow. It has nothing to say. The twist that he's in some sort of organic object that has a weird alien that is objectively ugly isn't explored. With so much time spent getting to this point there is no time left to dig into anything interesting. Is this creature (or creatures) trying to help him? Is it a trap? Does it feed off him in some way? The other crew members are dead so why did the creature pretend to wake up his shipmate and why did that fake version of her lash out in a way to make him suspicious? No relationships were even established with the other crew members so why did we even need not one but two? The time spent introducing them could have been spent exploring these questions. Instead the story is all set up and this is a set up that has been done before. The small hints it gives to an explanation could have taken the tropes in an interesting direction but instead we got uncanny valley sex.

It's always sad after the Red Pill
mcrpghk7 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I think the best thing about this episode is not being sure if that alien creature is really friendly or not, I mean how can we know if those ships really stop there by coincidence or are they captured in some way?

The short film still hints that the creature killed Tom's friend since he was unable to create an alternative reality for her, which reinforces the fact that maybe that station is really a trap since she claims to be sure she has programmed the right route .

But can that be just another alternative reality, where this time only Tom was able to wake up, can this creature be so emotionally connected and have this sensitivity to those who crash in their "nest"? Or does it just play with its prey before devouring? (as many animal species do).

In any case, it is disturbing to think that we are cared for by a creature as monstrous as that while we remain trapped in a "Matrix".

Scary and intriguing
dschledermann6 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First off, the CGI is stunning. It is really high quality stuff. Same goes for the acting and music. Definitely a high quality production.

This is delightfully scary and intriguing at the same time. At the end we are absolutely sure that Thom is in a lot of trouble, likely doomed, but not exactly sure what. Is he trapped in some sort of nightmare? Or if it's real, is he trapped at an alien station? By accident or purpose? Is "Greta" a predatory being or trying to ease his suffering, or both perhaps? Is "she" also trapped or setting the trap or something else? We don't really know for sure, but that is ok. I've watched it a few times to try and make sense of it, but have failed to come to a definite conclusion.

Warning: Spoilers
It was good, it was definitely good. The animation was obviously just incredibly detailed and very very very beautiful. It's just that the mouths were a bit strange, and sometimes I thought the facial expression didn't match the tone of voice. I wasn't entirely convinced by the voice acting either honestly. Also, how many of these are gonna end with some kind of Groundhog Day twist? It was a pretty cool and very disturbing ending but I wasn't entirely won over by it. It was a cool episode but like a couple of the others I've seen so far, I think it was a missed opportunity

A wonderful episode
edi-moldovan21 April 2019
A rare case of an open end where you know how it will end.

Not wanting to spoil anything the Animation is extraordinary, the Story fantastic, the characters relatable, the dialogue on Point and the ending oh wow the ending. Indeed a very well put together Episode and at the very least in my personal top 3 of the whole Season.

This is just the Matrix
kyle_michiels18 May 2019
I don't see why this episode get so much praise. The characters of this episode reach the uncanny valley. The look so real that they look fake. However Greta looked really good.

The plot just ripped of the matrix. Its cliché after cliché. Very predictable writing. I was hoping it was a lie when she said it was a simulation. But it wasn't.

For people saying this was the best episode in this series then I think Im gonna be let down be the rest of the series.
