Features the first appearance (chronologically) of Joe Bulo, a character that was also played by Brad Garrett in season 2, the events of which were set in 1979.
The scene in Odis Weff's apartment has similarities to two Coen Brothers' films. First, the way in which a Odis realizes someone is hiding in the shower who then pulls the curtain off the shower rod is just like the kidnapping scene in Fargo (1996). Second, the way in which Odis struggles with Cannon's man is shot, staged and acted much like the scene in No Country for Old Men (2007) in which Anton Chigur strangles the Sheriff's Deputy.
When Odis comes to Josto's mansion, Satchel is reading from Upton Sinclair's novel "The Jungle" . The series touches on several themes of the novel such as the struggle of immigrants, exploitative and unhygienic conditions in the early 20th century stockyards and other industries, and the class conflict in general.
