Lempicka, the much-anticipated but cooly received musical directed by Hadestown‘s Rachel Chavkin, will play its final performance on Sunday, May 19, producers announced tonight, just a month after opening.
In a statement, producers Seaview and Jenny Niederhoffer said: “We are so proud of our production and the family of artists and artisans who’ve shaped it. Few knew better than Tamara de Lempicka that art isn’t easy but always worth the effort.”
The musical received three Tony nominations on Tuesday, including two for the performances of Eden Espinosa (Leading Actress in a Musical) and Amber Iman (Featured Actress in a Musical). A third nom went to Riccardo Hernández and Peter Nigrini for their scenic design. The hoped-for nomination for Best Musical didn’t happen.
Lempicka chronicles the life of the 20th century painter Tamara de Lempicka, played by Espinosa. Iman portrayed the artist’s muse and lover Rafaela.

George Lucas gave birth to one of the greatest pop culture phenomena when he made Star Wars in 1977. The space-opera feature smashed box office records and established a new unique franchise. However, after the conclusion of the Original Trilogy, when Lucas released the Prequel Trilogy, things did not play out well.
Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor in Star Wars prequel trilogy
While the Original Trilogy of Star Wars was widely appreciated and still loved by the fans, the departure from the traditional style was disliked by many in the Prequel stories. Interestingly, George Lucas played a massive gamble by financing the second Prequel film, Attack of the Clones, which does not have a good name among the fans. It generated a mixed to negative reception worldwide.

Box Office – Do Aur Do Pyaar comes close to 3.50 crores over the weekend, is on the same lines as Laapataa Ladies (Photo Credit –Facebook)
Do Aur Do Pyaar was stable on Sunday as 1.35 crore came in. This is a bit of an increment over Saturday collections of 1.28 crore, though a higher growth that would have taken the film past the 1.50-1.75 crore range would have been even better.
The film is running at the selected count of screens and shows because Eid releases Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan still have maximum showcasing. For Do Aur Do Pyaar to challenge that further, it needs to keep demonstrating even better occupancy at the screens where it’s already playing so that collections from Monday onwards also keep the momentum going. Looking at the trend so far, it could well turn out to be the case, and hopefully, Bollywood will have something...

Anyone who’s ever played tennis knows the game starts with love and escalates fast. In Luca Guadagnino’s hip, sexy and ridiculously overheated “Challengers,” the rivals are former doubles partners Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) and Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor), best friends since the age of 12, who went their separate ways after both players fell for the same woman. Patrick got there first, but Art wound up marrying her — and their sense of competition has only intensified since.
As bunkmates at the same tennis academy, the guys must have heard this old groaner: What do you call a girl who stands between two players on a tennis court? In Guadagnino’s erotic drama, Zendaya plays the gal in that position, seated at precisely the midpoint between Art and Patrick in their big match. The camera doesn’t turn, but her head does, swiveling with each shot. This is Tashi Duncan,...

Track by Track is a recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through every song on their latest release. Today, Gustaf take us into their new album, Package Pt. 2.
Gustaf return today with Package Pt. 2, the follow-up to their charged, fever dream 2021 debut Audio Drag for Ego Slobs. The New York City band previously shared Package Pt. 2 singles “Starting and Staring,” “Here Hair/Hard Hair,” and this week, “Close.” Now, the quintet, led by the wildly expressive vocalist Lydia Gammill, is blazing forward with their sophomore album.
Delightful, cunning, aggressive, passive, and a host of other adjectives could be used to describe the post-punk excellency of Package Pt. 2. It is intricate and complex, and at times contradictory with its moods — but Gustaf are consistent in their stylistic approach, and the album is stuffed with memorable, quality songs.

Steven Spielberg is one of the wisest men in Hollywood and is known to give all kinds of advice to his peers, whether they are part of his films or not. After all, there is no one who wouldn’t want to get advice from someone who has such a wealth of knowledge. However, John Carpenter has one notable Steven Spielberg movie, which he claimed was pretentious.

Steven Spielberg has been a part of many iconic franchises over the years, as he has been responsible for films such as the Jurassic Park franchise, Indiana Jones film series, Saving Private Ryan and many other films. [The following story contains spoilers from the first four episodes of Apple TV+’s The New Look.]

Instead, Kessler has partnered with veteran film producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, through their dB-ak production company, on the series about how Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and other French fashion designers of the time dealt with the struggles of World War II and launched modern fashion. The name refers to how Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow described Dior’s 1947 collection.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, both Kessler and Di Bonaventura were enthusiastic about their new professional pairing. When asked how working on this series was different than his previous endeavors, Kessler was quick to offer praise.

Harmony, the Barry Manilow/Bruce Sussman musical that opened in November to good reviews that never translated to big audiences, will play its final performance at the Barrymore Theatre on Sunday, February 4.

Directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, Harmony tells the true story of the Comedian Harmonists, a German vocal group that achieved international fame and success in the 1920s and ’30 but were all but wiped from history by the Nazis. Steven Spielberg's alien abduction thriller "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" was released in November of 1977, only six months after the world of blockbusters had been rattled by the release of George Lucas' "Star Wars." Lucas and Spielberg were friends and collaborators, and deep-cut "Star Wars" fans might be able to tell you about several times that Spielberg has included "Star Wars" references in a few of his films. Notably, in Speilberg's 1982 film "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial," a kid is seen wearing a Yoda costume on Halloween, and the titular alien seems to have recognized him. This reference was famously handed back to Spielberg when Lucas included E.T. aliens in his 1999 film "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace." Starwoids might also know about the C-3Po and R2-D2 hieroglyphics in Speilberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark." In Close Encounters," if one looks closely at the alien mother ship,...

Director Lukas Dhont is the new guest curator for Galerie, Indian Paintbrush’s digital film club.
Dhont, whose 2022 coming-of-age film “Close” was nominated for best international feature, names 18 films that influenced him the most for Galerie members.
Among the entries is the 1975 documentary “Grey Gardens.” “A teacher in film school showed us ‘Grey Gardens,’ he writes about the film, which tells the story of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ eccentric and reclusive aunt, Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale,” and cousin Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale. “I remember it made me doubt for a long time whether I wanted to continue in documentary because I saw so much of its possibilities realized in this film. The desire of being seen here is so beautifully captured. How we love to be actors sometimes.”
Also on his list are Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight,” “The Tree of Life” from Terrence Malick and “Shame,” Steve McQueen’s...

A24 has confirmed that they’re re-teaming with Halina Reijn, the director of their slasher satire Bodies Bodies Bodies, on a erotic thriller called Babygirl – and an impressive cast has already been assembled for the film. Here’s the line-up: Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional).
According to Deadline, Reijn will be working from a screenplay she wrote herself. The story she crafted for this one centers on a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern. Given the “thriller” part of the “erotic thriller” description, we have to assume that this affair goes terribly wrong in some way… probably in a way that involves more than just hurt feelings.
Reijn is producing Babygirl for Man Up Film, alongside A24 and David Hinojosa of 2Am. Julia Oh, Zach Nutman,...

The tumultuousness of turning thirty is a definitive moment in many people’s lives but it is one often not discussed as much as the burgeoning freedom of your twenties or the existential reckoning of your forties. Filmmaker Tom Gentle captures the essence of this unnoticed period in his comedy drama Close, which takes a look at a couple who find themselves questioning their decisions whilst being trapped outside of their flat in a looming stairwell. It’s a situation which operates on a dramatic level but also on a metaphorical one as a purgatorial battleground between life’s stages. A film we first picked out as a highlight of this year’s Glasgow Short Film Festival, Dn is delighted to premiere Close alongside a conversation with Gentle where he delves deep into the improvisation-led methods he embraced to forge the story in addition to the cinematic choices he made...

Martin Scorsese’s 50-year filmmaking career and longtime side gig as a film preservation advocate has led to him being recognized as the world’s biggest cinephile for decades. But his increasingly vocal passion for the medium — and yes, his viral comments about Marvel movies — have given him a new kind of relevance in recent years as an aspirational figure for young cinephiles on the Internet who are dismayed by the state of the industry. So it feels appropriate (if surreal) that the 80-year-old auteur now has a Letterboxd account.
As part of the lengthy promotional cycle for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Scorsese has officially joined the film-centric social media site that encourages users to log and review films that they have seen. And he’s been busy, logging 69 films and curating a list of classics that he recommends pairing with his own work.

Last month, we learned that Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Television is teaming up with Boardwalk Pictures and Vice Studios to bring the four-part docu-series Encounters to the Netflix streaming service on September 27th. With that date right around the corner, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for the series and you can check it out in the embed above.
Yon Motskin, creator of the Max series Generation Hustle, has directed the four episodes of Encounters, which will explore four extraordinary true stories of encounters with otherworldly phenomena. Each episode tells a single story: strange lights in the sky over small-town Texas; submersible space crafts haunting a coastal Welsh village; an alien encounter with schoolchildren in Zimbabwe and non-human intelligence reportedly interfering with a nuclear power plant in Japan. Told from the perspective of firsthand experiencers – in the places where the sightings occurred – and guided by scientists and military personnel,...
