After a golden age in the 1980s, Chinese filmmakers were quietly discouraged from dabbling in the sci-fi genre – it isn’t real science and authorities did not want youngsters to get confused. That stance changed during the last decade and the Shanghai International Film Festival has just hosted its first sci-fi week, comprising nearly a dozen film screenings and a trio of panel discussions featuring the new luminaries in the sector.
Reasons for the revised position of China’s authorities are not hard to understand. Not only was Hollywood getting away with dominating a genre that was popular with Chinese audiences, China in the 21st century has become a global technology powerhouse. Its space program, in particular, is now among the most advanced, capable of a normalized rocket launch schedule, international co-operation and lunar and interplanetary missions.

Anissa Bonnefont, whose latest film “Wonder Boy” won a Special Jury prize at Tribeca in 2020, has recently completed “Nadia,” a timely documentary feature about Nadia Nadim, the Afghan-born Danish soccer star.
Federation Entertainment produced the film with Echo Studio, in association with France’s Canal Plus, which commissioned it.
Penned by Bonnefont and Edith Chapin, the cinematic documentary tells the extraordinary life journey of Nadim, who was born and raised in Afghanistan. After the Taliban executed her father in 2000, when she was only eight years old, Nadia, along with her four sisters and mother, escaped Kabul by foot. The family sought asylum in Denmark where Nadia eventually became a champion on the national soccer team. She then joined the Paris-Saint-Germain women’s professional team and she’s currently planning at the Racing Louisville Football Club.
Bonnefont followed Nadim for 18 months in 2020 and 2021 in France, where the athlete was playing for the Paris team,...

Balmain, the fashion house fronted by creative director Olivier Rousteing, is making a push in the entertainment space with the announcement of “Fracture,” a short-form drama series starring Tommy Dorfman, Jesse Jo Stark, Charles Melton and Ajani Russell.
Created by Rousteing and his creative team at Balmain in partnership with Channel 4, the series will also serve as the debut of the brand’s Fall 2021 collection in lieu of a traditional seasonal campaign. It will launch globally on Sept. 2 at fractureseries.com.
“The fashion industry is in need of new narratives and new ideas. So, maybe it was the pandemic that pushed us — but for this year, my team and I were determined to break away from the pack,” Rousteing tells Variety. “It definitely seemed like the time to do something fresh. We spent a lot of time brainstorming and discussing the possibilities of innovative ways of showing the house...

Video game nostalgia seems to be at an all-time high right now; either that or video game studios have just run out of ideas. Whatever the reason, we’re currently in the midst of a wave of old-school early video games getting reboots, remakes or reduxes. Case in point, the recently-released high def remakes of Wonderboy: Asha in Monster World (aka Monster World 4) and Alex Kidd in Miracle World Dx…

My experience with Wonderboy, unlike a lot of British gamers who grew up with the Sega Master System, is not actually an experience with Wonderboy. Let me explain… You see some of us actually were Nintendo fans back in the day and bought an Nes rather than the SMS – in my case when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pack-in set was released in the UK and put on sale in Boots of all places! So...

Radar Films, the Mediawan-owned production banner, is reteaming with “The Deep House” filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo on “North Sentinel.” The well-established company, which is headed by Clement Miserez and Matthieu Warter, is developing several other English-language projects including a genre twist on “The Phantom of the Opera” directed by Xavier Gens (“The Divide”).
Rolling off “The Deep House,” an underwater horror film that was just acquired by Blumhouse and Epix, Maury and Bustillo will next direct “North Sentinel.” Pic is inspired by the true story of an explorer who set off to visit a dangerous island located deep in the Indian Ocean, where a tribe of indigenous people live, and was killed. Visiting the island or going anywhere near it has been banned by the Indian government. “North Sentinel” will revolve around a young American woman who embarks on a journey to the island in order find her missing brother.

Out on Netflix as of June 26, Wonder Boy stands out in the fashion documentary genre as uncommonly revealing. Of course, as it follows a year in the life of Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing, there’s glamour and glitz aplenty, from runway shows to cameos by fans of the house like Kim Kardashian West and Jennifer Lopez. But the main arc of the movie concerns the designer’s search to uncover the story of how he came to be adopted, poignantly capturing the ache he feels about never knowing his biological mother and the tears that flow when he finally learns a ...

Photo: ‘Wonder Boy’/Netflix In 2011, 24-year-old Olivier Rousteing was announced as Balmain’s new creative director, marking the youngest creator to helm a luxury fashion brand since Yves Saint Laurent himself. Since then, he’s improved the company’s earnings sixfold, proving his place as a growing leader in the fashion industry. But behind the scenes, Rousteing dealt with his own, inexplicable problem he could not solve – where he came from, as an adopted individual given up at birth. ‘Wonder Boy,’ the newest documentary from Netflix and Studio Canal, explores his search for the unknown.
