Dear friends, we've been waiting for this for an incredibly long time, and it's finally happened! The long-awaited third season of Bridgerton landed on Netflix yesterday, May 16, two years after Season 2 was released. But amidst all the incredibly high and loud excitement among viewers of one of Netflix's flagship series, there has been fan angst over the streaming service's policy. After all, we waited two full years to finally get... just four episodes of the new season.
Yes, folks, back in December 2023, it was announced that Bridgerton Season 3 would be split into two parts, with a one-month difference in release. For many, this is very disappointing news, and while the Part 1 finale left many on the edge of their seats, such a long wait left an underwhelming impression. So why was Season 3 split in half, and is Netflix's decision to do so putting Bridgerton's popularity at risk of plummeting in the near future?...

What is it about Virgin River that keeps Netflix subscribers hooked?
Well, for starters, the laid-back vibe of the titular town, the love entanglements and drama that weave their way through each storyline, and, of course, the brilliant ensemble cast that never fails to impress with their chemistry, dynamism, and devotion to the narrative.
And now it's been almost half a year since the Christmas specials were released, ending the Season 5 mayhem on a comforting yet emotional note. Even before its release, Netflix renewed the series for a sixth season based on high ratings and critical and audience acclaim,...

If there's one thing that is abundantly clear, it's that Netflix can't be stopped.
It's always on the tips of tongues, whether it's the controversial (and irksome) crackdown on password and account sharing, the particulars of how it may have had a role in the dual Writer/Actors strikes, or the near-constant outcry over its many cancelations of beloved series.
Love or loathe it, when it comes to discussing modern-day viewing of content, Netflix is at the forefront of all discussions.
Netflix Layoffs, What Does It Mean?
And that's why the news about the streamer facing yet another round of layoffs had many pondering what it meant for them and how it would influence their favorite shows and content.
Rest assured that as unfortunate as those layoffs were, they won't impact any of our beloved series or films.
As part of a "restructuring," the streamer let go of some people...

Despite the fact that we’ve watched five whole seasons of Virgin River drama, only a matter of months have passed in the world of the show. The weeks that elapse in are perhaps the show’s most jam-packed yet — as well as its most devastating. Multiple disasters afflict our favorite Northern California residents: A massive wildfire put plenty of townspeople’s lives in peril, while Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) tragically suffer a miscarriage.

In the 2023 Virgin River Christmas episodes, Mel learned that her mother had a relationship with a man in Virgin River and that man was her biological father. That sent Mel on a quest to find her biological dad, who was eventually revealed to be Everett. Though at first he wanted nothing to do with his daughter, he eventually had a change of heart. One of Netflix’s best shows is getting the franchise treatment, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about it.
Deadline reported Thursday morning that plans are underway for a Virgin River spinoff.
The pitch, if it goes to series, would focus on Mel’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) mother and her relationship with Everett.
It would be set years before the soapy drama to fill in the blanks about what happened during those earlier years in their lives.
Fans of the hit series learned in November’s Christmas special that Everett was Mel’s biological father.
It seems like the prequel has been in the works for quite some time because we’ll get more breadcrumbs about this love story from the past on Virgin River Season 6.
Are you ready for Sarah and Everett’s backstory?
Parts of Sarah and Everett’s love story will be showcased through flashbacks during the upcoming season,...

We may not be headed to Virgin River just yet, but the cast sure is!
Since we all love a little small-town gossip and great news, here are a few tidbits to spread around and discuss courtesy of Deadline:
Virgin River is back in production today!
While we still won't get to escape to our favorite town and all the melodrama that ensues there until 2025, at least we know the strike delays are out of the way, and filming is back in motion.
And since the cast loves us so much, they'll hopefully be teasing us with tidbits to hold us over along the way.
But that's not all we have to mull over in the interim.
The hit Netflix series will take a spin at its own spinoff in the form of a prequel.
If you're a Netflix aficionado, you'll know that one of their other massive hits is Bridgerton,...

Netflix is developing a “Virgin River” prequel series.
“Virgin River” follows the lives of the residents of the eponymous Northern California town, including nurse practitioner Mel (Breckenridge), bar owner and veteran Jack (Henderson), town doctor Doc (Matheson), mayor Hope (O’Toole) and many more.
If ordered to series, the prequel would follow Mel’s parents: Sarah Jensen, who died when Mel was young, and Everett Reed (John Allen Nelson), who was revealed as Mel’s biological father in Season 6 finale “Father Christmas.”
“Virgin River” premiered in 2019 and is now in production on its sixth season. The series, which consistently dominates the Netflix Top 10 when new seasons are released, is based on Robyn Carr’s novel series of the same name and was developed for television by Sue Tenney. Patrick Sean Smith serves as showrunner and is writing the prequel series.

Not long after he returned as Disney’s CEO in late 2022, Bob Iger sat down with Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s head of parks and experiences, and Sean Shoptaw, the company’s head of games, to be briefed about the media habits of young consumers.
“The first thing they showed me were the demographic trends,” Iger recalled, speaking to Wall Street analysts Feb. 7. “When I saw Gen Z and Gen Alpha and even millennials, and I saw the amount of time they were spending in terms of their total media screen time on video games, it was stunning to me, equal to what they spend on TV and movies.”
The conclusion he reached: “We have to be there, and we have to be there as soon as we possibly can in a very compelling way,” Iger added, noting that historically Disney has simply licensed its IP to outside game studios.

For years, the running joke in media has been that if we keep inventing and bundling streaming services, we’re effectively going to reinvent cable. At first, it made sense to separate streaming titles; some were better for movies, some for TV, and still others for sport. At least one of them comes discounted if not free with the latest iPhone, while another is built into the subscription that gets you free shipping on toilet paper. But when it comes to quality and quantity of content, what streaming service really comes out on top?
Listen, before you go about choosing let alone ranking your streaming apps, you need to assess your streaming priorities. Below, four IndieWire staffers debate our top three streamers, acknowledging that each of us has different viewing preferences and lifestyles. Netflix has unveiled the slate of TV series set to release new seasons in 2024, and some of the streamer’s biggest series are not on the list, delayed by the writers and actors strikes.
Stranger Things‘ fifth and final season, which just started production earlier this month, will not debut until 2025, making for a three-year gap between both Seasons 3 and 4 (due to the pandemic) and Seasons 4 and 5.
Given the extensive VFX work involved in the series, which was originally slated to start filming Season 5 in May, the delay is not surprising.
Ditto for the series that dethroned Stranger Things as Netflix’s most popular series, Wednesday, which is not scheduled to begin production on Season 2 until late April in a new location, Ireland, and breakout new 2023 drama One Piece, which also is yet to start filming on its second season.

In a report analyzing TV viewership in the U.S. throughout 2023, Nielsen found that “Suits” beat a record previously held by “The Office” for number of minutes watched in a single year.
The legal drama racked up 57.7 billion total minutes watched in 2023, putting it just ahead of the 57.1 billion minutes of viewership accumulated by “The Office” in 2020. When comparing total time watched, though, projects with more episodes and/or longer episodes stand at an obvious advantage. The entirety of “Suits” runs for about 83 hours, which would mean it had an easier time reaching that 57 billion-minute mark than “The Office” did with about 73 hours of content.
Still, both the old record and the new one speak to Netflix’s ubiquity in the streaming landscape. “The Office” aired its final episode on NBC in 2013 but continued to reach a huge audience until it was removed from Netflix at the start of 2021 and...

The streaming gods have smiled on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
The Disney+ series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling books opened to a good-sized audience in the week before Christmas. The first two episodes, which debuted the evening of Dec. 19, drew about 572 million minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. With a combined run time of 80 minutes, that works out to about 7.15 million complete runs (or “views” as currently defined by much of the industry) of the two episodes in the United States.
Disney had earlier said that the first episode had earned 13.3 million views worldwide — equivalent to a little more than 505 million minutes — over its first six days. The Nielsen figures for the premiere put Percy Jackson ahead of Disney+’s last two Marvel premieres, Secret Invasion (461 million minutes) and season two of Loki (446 million), in total viewing time.
Prime Video’s Reacher moved up to the overall No.

Reacher began its second season with big viewing-time numbers, cementing its status as one of the most popular shows on Amazon’s Prime Video.
The series based on Lee Child’s novels had 1.69 billion minutes of watch time for the week of Dec. 11-17; season two’s first three episodes debuted Dec. 15 (viewing time for the week also includes the eight episodes of season one). That’s within 10 percent of Reacher’s total for its series premiere week (1.84 billion minutes) in February 2022, when Prime Video released the entire season at once. Season two is on a weekly release pattern after the opening three-episode salvo.
The 1.69 billion minutes for Reacher put the series in second place overall in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week. Netflix’s movie Leave the World Behind repeated as the overall No. 1 title, edging up to 1.95 billion minutes of viewing from 1.92 billion the previous week.
