Though he's had some mixed fortunes with adapting his work into Netflix series (Jupiter's Legacy had an ignominious one-season but others are in the works), Mark Millar's Millarworld is still part of the streaming giant's world. His next adaptation will be a fresh take on American Jesus called The Chosen One.
Co-created by Millar and artist Peter Gross, the comics first hit stands in 2004, but it has been a labour of love and years for the pair to finish the series – and at one point, was going to become a movie directed by Kick-Ass' Matthew Vaughn.
For the Netflix version, the story is being switched to Mexico. Jodie, a twelve-year-old boy, suddenly discovers he has Jesus-like powers: he can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! As the Evangelical and the Yaquí leaders in town try to get him to use his powers to save mankind,...

This post contains spoilers for season 2 of Netflix's "Shadow and Bone."
Fantasy, as a genre, brims with standard tropes refashioned to suit the tone and depth of respective narratives, wherein some stories dare to soar higher than baseline expectations. While such tropes can be retrofitted into thrilling, compelling stories, the genre often finds itself plagued with hackneyed executions of the chosen one, deliberate slow-burns that are often infuriating, and interpersonal dynamics that look like Wattpad fanfictions come to life.
However, the moment fantasy tales ground their characters with convincing motivations, true magic happens. For that, one need look no further than Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher" saga, which revolves around a morally-complex hero and a child of prophecy who grapples with the weight of her purpose. Leigh Bardugo's YA Grishaverse novel series, which includes the "Shadow and Bone" trilogy and the "Six of Crows" duology among others, manages...

The Emmy Awards dominated Variety’s Trending TV chart for the week of Sept. 12 – 18, pulling in more than 18 million engagements — less than the Oscars (33 million engagements) and Grammys (57 million engagements), but more than the SAG Awards (4 million), which were all tracked for a shorter length of time.
“Succession,” “Ted Lasso” and “The White Lotus” took home the top prizes during the Sept. 12 ceremony on NBC. Historic wins from Sheryl Lee Ralph, Quinta Brunson, Zendaya and Lee Jung-jae, as well as memorable moments from winners Jennifer Coolidge and Lizzo ruled Twitter chatter.

Mexico’s National Guard concluded its preliminary investigation into the fatal accident last week that claimed the lives of two actors and left six other cast and crew members working on the Netflix series The Chosen One injured.
A source tells Deadline the preliminary investigation is a non-legally binding report and the investigation into the crash continues.
Driver Alberto Jimenez Gomez was found to have been driving a passenger van at excessive speeds the Transpeninsular highway in Santa Rosalia-Loreto, Baja, California on June 16 ahead of the crash that killed Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar at 11:20 a.m. local time, according to local news site Zeta Tijuana. Deadline has contacted Mexico’s National Guard for confirmation and has reached out to Netflix for comment.
Further, the local report says Jimenez failed to decrease his speed to adapt to weather conditions that affected visibility, which caused him to lose control.

A survivor of the Baja California accident that claimed the lives of actors Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González from the Netflix series “The Chosen One” says he doesn’t blame the van driver or the production company. But actor Yeray Albelda says it’s the norm that “people are exhausted” in many productions.
The Mexican actors union Anda also held a remote press conference Tuesday to weigh in on the fatal crash.
In an interview with Variety, Albelda, one of the six survivors of the crash, said he was told that a mechanical failure might have caused it. Others, he was told, have speculated that the driver was trying to avoid a pothole or even a deer. No official report has been filed yet.
“For sure, long days and nights are the norm in most productions, people are exhausted,” Abelda said.
Sources close to the production have confirmed that filming has resumed.

The friends of late actors Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar, who tragically died on Thursday, June 16, in a car crash in Mexico, are demanding a thorough investigation into alleged issues with the Netflix production. Filming was temporarily suspended on Netflix’s The Chosen One last week when an automobile accident left Garduño Cruz and González Aguilar (known professionally as Paco Mufote) dead and four more cast/crew injured. Now, writer Rick Zazueta is pleading for authorities to investigate the incident as he claims that the cast had previously complained of logistical and transportation issues on the production. “This is a plea for justice for these deaths,” Zazueta wrote in a lengthy Facebook post. “This was no ordinary accident, the cast had been complaining openly about the logistical and transport issues faced in this production, calling it illogical, unreasonable, ignorant, and stupid.” Zazueta went on to allege that...

Kid Cudi paid tribute to late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain during his “Saturday Night Live” performances, rocking a fuzzy green cardigan and floral dress in true “Come As You Are” spirit.
Cudi first performed his song “Tequila Shots” and donned a green cardigan reminiscent of the one Cobain wore during Nirvana’s famous 1993 MTV Unplugged show. The tribute continued in his second performance, which featured the song “Sad People.” Cudi rocked an Off-White floral dress custom made by Virgil Abloh, causing many fans to draw comparisons to a similarly-patterned dress Cobain was famously photographed in. About the Film
Comedy can be a tricky genre, in so far as it becomes the most subjectively critiqued format. Ultimately, what makes something funny for some will fall completely flat with others, depending on their idea of humor. With this in mind, “The Chosen One” is one of those films that builds to a deplorable joke that hides behind an innocent veneer for the bulk of the production.
Synopsis
A young man from Taiwan travels to Okinawa to find love. He carries with him a bottle that contained a note requesting that he finds his way to the island to meet his true love. In which two Rainbow Rowell fans discuss Wayward Son, the much-anticipated sequel to queer wizard romance Carry On ...
This Wayward Son discussion includes major spoilers for both Carry On and Wayward Son.
Wayward Son, the sequel to Rainbow Rowell's queer wizard romance Carry On, hit shelves earlier this month. The book picks up roughly a year following the ending of Carry On, which saw Chosen One Simon Snow defeat the Insidious Humdrum and The Mage alongside best friend Penelope and vampire boyfriend Baz. It asks the worthy question: What happens after The Chosen One fulfills his prophecy?

This Wayward Son discussion includes major spoilers for both Carry On and Wayward Son.
Wayward Son, the sequel to Rainbow Rowell's queer wizard romance Carry On, hit shelves earlier this month. The book picks up roughly a year following the ending of Carry On, which saw Chosen One Simon Snow defeat the Insidious Humdrum and The Mage alongside best friend Penelope and vampire boyfriend Baz. It asks the worthy question: What happens after The Chosen One fulfills his prophecy?

It looks like the long-awaited Coming to America sequel isn’t Eddie Murphy‘s only reunion this year.
The actor met up with the grown-up former child star of his 1986 hit The Golden Child at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend, more than three decades after the film hit screens.
Murphy, 58, posed for a photo with Jasmin L. Reate, who played the title role in The Golden Child as a kid. It remains her one and only film role.
“He was just as kind as I remembered him when I was 6,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

For editor Tim Streeto, the trippy “Maniac” was a far cry from his other series, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Not just tonally, of course, with Annie (Emma Stone) and Owen (Jonah Hill) going on mind-bending and genre-bending adventures, but also because Patrick Somerville’s Netflix series was conceived as a long movie, with Cary Fukunaga (“Bond 25”) directing all 10 episodes (varying in length from 26 to 47 minutes).
“I asked Cary how stylistically he imagined these different episodes,” said Streeto, who had never worked with the director before. “Would there be a consistency visually to them or would he shoot them differently, like the Hitchcock caper in black-and-white [‘Exactly Like You’]? He said, no, he really wanted a consistency to them in terms of cinema grammar.
“They also had to feel like dreams through editing, through sound design, through music,” Streeto added. “Plus, they cross-boarded the entire series with Cary directing all of them and...

Heading to Netflix globally on June 28, The Chosen One (Orig: O Escolhido) is a series from Brazil that tips off a battle between science and spiritual belief. Three young doctors are sent to a remove village to administer vaccinations against a deadly mutated virus. The villagers are hostile to their government-decreed efforts, however, and there seems to be something very distinctive at play, since they villagers claim they do not die. Also, there is worship of some kind, and, I imagine, a few other hot-button issues will come into play as well. The series will run six episodes. Check out the trailer below....

It’s June — meaning school’s out and summer is in full force. What better way to celebrate than to binge some of Netflix’s new releases? Yell “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore” out your window as you watch “Network.” Be wary of modern technology as you consume the new season of “Black Mirror” … on a streaming service. And make sure to stay off your neighbor’s lawn after watching Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino.”
A few superhero movies are also flying to Netflix this month. Robert Pattinson may be the new Batman, but Christian Bale is the Caped Crusader for now, with both “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight” hitting Netflix. And if you can’t get enough of superheroes, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” will supply them in droves.

"The real world is not about happy endings. It's about taking the life you have, and fighting like hell to keep it."
