Oliver Queen may have headlined one of the most important and influential TV shows of the modern era, one that launched an entire shared universe to firmly establish The CW as the home of small screen superhero content, but the Green Arrow has never been given the opportunity to star in his own feature film.
The closest the expert archer ever came was when David S. Goyer was developing Escape From Super Max, a prison break thriller set in the DC Universe that would have seen Green Arrow forced to flee a high security prison populated by familiar villains after being framed for a murder he didn’t commit.
There’ve been plenty of rumors over the years that the character was being considered for the Dceu, of course, with Charlie Hunnam regularly linked with the role, and we’ve now heard from our sources – the same ones that told...

“Lovecraft Country” marks the second time Jurnee Smollett and creator Misha Green have worked together, extending their creative relationship from two seasons on Wgn’s historical drama “Underground” to HBO’s buzzy horror series, based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. The show is executive produced by Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams.
But it’s the possibility of a third collaboration that has comic fans buzzing: could Smollett reprise her role as Black Canary in DC Films’ “Birds of Prey” in a Green-helmed project?
Smollett laughs, saying those conversations are above her pay grade. “It’s no secret how much I love Black Canary. It’s a dream, character and was a dream to play her,” she tells Variety. “If [the] dynamics fell in the right way, I would absolutely do it in a heartbeat, and Lord knows, I follow Misha wherever she leads me.”

Over the course of the last two decades, Shane Carruth has made two movies, and it remains unclear whether he’ll make another one. Last fall, while promoting his performance in “The Dead Center,” the “Primer” and “Upstream Color” director said that he was finished with filmmaking after he finished up one more project. The reclusive sci-fi director may be serious, but in the meantime, he’s finding a way to pass the torch. As executive producer on “The Wanting Mare,” the distinctive fantasy-drama that marks the directorial debut of Nicholas Ashe Batemen, Carruth is lending his name to raise the profile of a filmmaker who — like Carruth himself with his two movies — has crafted an otherworldly vision on his own terms.
The movie unfolds across decades, as several generations of women in a dark, dystopian world grapple with the same dream of a magical age that predates their existence.

Back in January, Arrow wrapped up for good after eight seasons, with Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen meeting a heroic end. However, the saga of the Emerald Archer doesn’t stop there. The show’s penultimate episode was “Green Arrow & the Canaries,” a backdoor pilot for a spinoff of the same name focusing on Kat McNamara’s Mia as she takes on her father’s mantle in a futuristic Star City.
To date, the series has yet to officially be given the greenlight, so fans are anxiously awaiting some news on that front. Legends of Tomorrow star and Arrow veteran, Caity Lotz, remains positive about Green Arrow‘s chances, though, and hopes that she’ll be able to cross over to the spinoff so that White Canary can team up with the Black Canaries.

Before seeing DC's Birds of Prey, I rewatched Greta Gerwig's Little Women a second time. Unsurprisingly, these two cinematic experiences were as different as night and day, one a vulgar rainbow confetti fever dream and the other a cozy, understated hug of a period piece. But revisiting Little Women deepened my appreciation for Birds of Prey, helping me unearth the profound message beneath the latter's raunch and violence: Harley Quinn's solo movie radically paints a picture of female rage and provides a catharsis that women in comic book films don't often get.
In Little Women, Marmee March (Laura Dern) explains to Jo (Saoirse Ronan) that she is angry nearly every day of her life. But she's learned to control her anger, not allowing it to get to her. Marmee's response isn't exclusive to the experiences of Civil War wives. Women still have many legitimate reasons to be angry today.

Ever since she stole the show in Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie seems like she’s fully immersed herself into the role of Harley Quinn. Her ever-developing love of this character, led to her actually pitching an adult-aimed, all-female, ensemble action film, inspired by Jordan B. Garfinkel and Chuck Dixon’s “Birds of Prey” comic books, to Warner Brothers. This pitch became Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn and the dedication that has gone into creating Cathy Yan’s film was most certainly worth it!
Released to great reviews, Birds of Prey has sadly underperformed (though has made back its budget already worldwide) compared to industry expectations, which has recently led to a Warner Brothers-approved title change to “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey”. Whatever title you prefer, Birds of Prey is a joy from start to finish. The film sees Harley (Robbie) break up with The Joker,...

When you have read as many comics down the years as me, literally in the tens of thousands, you’ve pretty much seen it all. Quirky indie books? Check. Blockbuster multi-title crossovers? Check. Inter-company books? Check. Monthly books published on time? Che….er, well I’ve nearly seen it all. Point is, when you see something a little different it does tend to catch your eye. DC’s Crimes of Passion, echoing those old lurid EC Comics books, certainly caught my eye. Essentially, it’s DC’s attempt at a Valentine’s Day Special, and why not. Actually, it is ten attempts at telling a decent Valentine’s Day story, as there are ten short stories in total, all with different characters and creative teams. Will we get lucky this Valentine’s? Let’s take a look.

Batman himself might not be in it, but the Dark Knight’s stomping ground is filled out in Birds of Prey as we meet a bunch of additional vigilantes operating in Gotham City. Among them is Dinah Lance Aka Black Canary, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell. The heroine actually turned out to be much closer to her comic book counterpart than we were expecting in the movie, complete with her metahuman Canary Cry. And, as revealed in one scene, a superhero mom.
Dinah begins the film as the singer at Black Mask’s club, but she’s soon promoted to the position of driver/enforcer for the crime boss due to her combat skills. This puts her in the sights of detective Renee Montoya, who asks her to work as a mole for her. Dinah is reluctant, though, as her mother previously worked with the cops. We learn through this conversation that Dinah Sr.

Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) tells the tale of Harley Quinn’s break up with The Joker, and how she comes to work alongside four other female characters to take down a common enemy, The Black Mask.
As a long-time fan of DC Comics, I’d say that director Cathy Yan kept the characters pretty close to their comic roots; Harley has gone from villain to anti-hero, Huntress’ origin is spot on, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead has her portrayal nailed,...

Harley Quinn’s getting a team together in Birds of Prey, with Margot Robbie’s anti-heroine uniting with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). Their mission? To stop Roman Sionis Aka Black Mask, a Gotham City crime boss, from getting his hands on young thief Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), who’s managed to get caught in his crosshairs.
From what we’ve seen of him so far in the trailers, Black Mask looks to be a scene-stealing, flamboyant bad guy, maybe the sort you love to hate. Star Ewan McGregor, though, is keen to press that there’s a real nastiness and darkness to him that shouldn’t be overlooked. While speaking with Nerdist, the Scottish actor talked about how he views Sionis as a complete “control freak,” which is why someone as “uncontrollable” as Harley causes him so much havoc.

Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 Episode 1
Well that was incredible.
I stopped being defensive about how much I love Legends of Tomorrow sometime towards the end of the second season. A little before the show stopped being defensive about how much fun it was, now that I think about it. And once that happened, it settled into a nice rhythm of having stupid amounts of fun on screen, moving whatever ridiculous plot the season set up along, and getting us into its characters’ heads and making us love them. There would be the occasional turd, but it would always rebound quickly. The show thrived on parallel tracks: gleefully throwing the craziest plot shit it could at us, and digging down deep into intensely lovable misfits.
