It’s good to be Paul Giamatti. With seven years of Showtime’s Billions under his belt, and a fresh Oscar nomination for The Holdovers in his rearview mirror, the legendary character actor can seemingly have his pick of any role he wants on the big or small screen. According to a scoop by notorious Hollywood tipster Daniel Richtman, he may have just chosen the most unlikely follow-up of all time: a TV version of Eli Roth’s Hostel from the controversial horror auteur himself.
While this might sound outrageous to some, Giamatti has been very open about his love of the genre, noting that he wants to add more horror to his filmography. He’s always carved out time in his schedule to be in genre stuff like the series 30 Coins, the movies Morgan, John Dies at the End, Gunpowder Milkshake, Shoot ’em Up, and more. He also...

American Star is the latest film from Spanish director Gonzalo López-Gallego whose output has ranged from Apollo 18 and Open Grave to Backdraft 2, a 28-year later Dtv sequel to the 1991 hit. Here he and writer Nacho Faerna are presenting a variation on a well-worn theme, the criminal who’s about to pull off their last job before retiring.
In this case, the criminal is a hitman named Wilson who has come to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands to perform what should be an easy assignment. But complications ensue right from the start, when he drives out to the unnamed target’s secluded house, he’s not there. Someone does arrive, but it’s a young woman, not the man he was expecting. An unsung master of movie magic, Solon Luigi Colani has worked on some of the biggest Hollywood movies ever shot in Germany and beyond, among them works by Quentin Tarantino, Ron Howard, George Clooney, Denis Villeneuve, Paul W.S. Anderson, Gore Verbinski and the Wachowskis.
His enormous range of practical visual effects have also become regular fixtures in Germany’s domestic film and TV industry, where he has helped filmmakers and showrunners bring their visions to life.
In Matthias Glasner’s current Berlinale Competition screener “Dying,” for example, he created a pneumatic pump, hose system and the necessary chunky liquid for a dramatic scene in which a character falls ill at the Berlin Philharmonic concert hall.
Colani established his Berlin-based company Pyro Labs in the 1990s as a side business while working as a young It specialist. Initially focused on firework displays for weddings, birthday parties and other live events, the...

Carla Gugino is amazing. From her early days co-starring with Pauly Shore in Son-In-Law to indies with her partner Sebastian Gutierrez, including Electra Luxx and Women in Trouble, Gugino has shirked the traditional path many Hollywood actresses have taken. The result is a career full of unique work on the big screen and small including work with filmmakers like Robert Rodriguez, Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game), Zack Snyder, Ridley Scott (American Gangster), and more. Her series work with Mike Flanagan has included an array of roles in The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, as well as her recent turn in The Fall of the House of Usher, which garnered Gugino her first Critics Choice nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.

Tales of musicians who sold their soul for fame are common enough, Crossroads, Trick or Treat, Dark Roads 79 and The 27 Club are just a few examples. The Devil Went Down to Islington is a little different, however. It tells the tale of a music teacher who makes a Faustian bargain while drunk, only to panic when he realizes what he’s done.
It actually opens like a bizarre action film with Father Crowley using switchblade crosses to fight a pair of masked figures who are attacking a panicked man. He defeats them, but in the end Satan claims another soul.

When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.
And I was right, rather than an adaptation of one story The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of Poe’s works en masse with Roderick and his sister Madeline Usher reinvented as heads of a Sackler like pharmaceutical empire.

Actress Karen Gillian, who plays the leading character Sam in the action film ‘Gundpowder Milkshake’, said that the way her character can use all sorts of weapons is what she found most exciting. Talking about her character in the film, Karen said: “Sam is so cool. First, she is incredible at fighting and can handle all the different types of combat and use all sorts of different weapons that I’ve personally never heard of or seen before. Tackling that is always really exciting.”
She added: “But the character has also got such depth: she’s a woman who is completely lost. In her mind she was abandoned by her mother when she was a child and she’s suffering from the sense of loss and lack of self-worth because she felt there wasn’t enough to keep her mother around, so she has abandonment issues.”

It’s like a weight has been lifted from her, and she’s slightly more humorous now and able to show emotion more. Karen also admitted she is “lucky...

In "Furie," Veronica Ngô stars as an ex-gangster in a desperate situation. "Furies" takes Ngô from in front of the camera and puts her in the director's chair of the action-heavy prequel headed to Netflix. An early 2000s vibe about seedy gangland colorfulness nods to an adrenaline junkie wave that birthed titles such as "Smokin' Aces" or "Shoot 'Em Up," which isn't a complaint. Ngô orchestrates a sleaze-filled yet feminine action brawler that flips the script on once prevalent subgenre gender norms, unfazed — better yet, empowered — by the task. The hyper-intensive style favorably reminds of "Sin City" minus black and white, or even as recently as "Bullet Train," how Saigon becomes drenched in neons like Nicolas Winding Refn's got a hold of lighting rigs.
Ngô also plays Jaqueline, the gracious leader of an underground assassin squad composed of girls who've endured unspeakable abuse under male-dominated societal norms. Bi (played...

Michelle Yeoh is no stranger to Hollywood. She’s been kicking ass and taking names on screens since 1994, then hit the big time thanks to the Hong Kong action film series Supercop. Since her early days, Yeoh is a bright star among many in films like Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sunshine, Gunpowder Milkshake, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and, of course, Everything Everywhere All At Once. Her Hollywood breakthrough stems from her performance as Wai Lin in the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. However, being a Bond girl isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Speaking with People, Yeoh says the role was a double-edged sword with several drawbacks to her career.
“The first movie I did after I came to America was ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ with Pierce Brosnan,” Yeoh told People magazine. “James Bond at that point had only been known as macho,...

Even the Super Bowl wasn’t going to keep this crowd away from celebrating Michelle Yeoh and her historic Oscar nomination as the first Asian woman with a nod in the best actress category.
On Sunday night — while the last quarter of the big game was still being played — around 100 guests arrived at the new Mandarin Oriental Residences in Beverly Hills for a dinner in honor of the Everything Everywhere All at Once star.
Hosted by project developer Michael Shvo, chef Daniel Boulud and Mandarin Oriental, the night began with a cocktail party, where a large-screen TV had the game on.
One guest, Angela Bassett, told The Hollywood Reporter she had caught Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance before heading over to fete her fellow Oscar nominee Yeoh (with whom she starred in the 2021 film Gunpowder Milkshake). The 2023 Super Bowl is still over two days away, but Sony Pictures has decided to give us an "early look" at a new (wordless) teaser trailer for the Adam Driver-led sci-fi thriller "65." It was appropriately released 65 hours ahead of Sunday's football kick-off. Sony is also indulging in some clever wordplay with the words "big game." It has two meanings, as you can tell. On one hand, it refers to the 2023 Super Bowl as the big football game — and also dinosaurs, in that Adam Driver is hunting some very big game.
In "65," as with HBO's excellent ongoing "The Last of Us," the male protagonist Mills (Driver) must keep a young girl called Koa (Ariana Greenblatt) safe from all kinds of monsters. The two are the only survivors of a crashlanding, one that has somehow taken Mills and his futuristic gun 65 million years into Earth's past. That's why there are so many dinosaurs around.

From Gunpowder Milkshake to Ballerina Overdrive, Lena Headey sure does know how to pick projects with awesome titles. Deadline just announced the latter action-thriller today, which also features Yara Shahidi (Grown-ish), Isabela Merced (Father of the Bride), Lana Condor (Moonshot), Millicent Simmonds (A Quiet Place) and Iris Apatow (The Bubble).
David Leitch is producing Ballerina Overdrive, which oddly enough seems to have nothing to do with Ballerina, the upcoming John Wick spinoff.
In Ballerina Overdrive, “A troupe of ballerinas find themselves fighting for survival as they attempt to escape from a remote inn after their bus breaks down on the way to a competition.”
The film is said to feature “dance-based action choreography,” and it’s being launched at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin by Vincent Maraval and Kim Fox’s The Veterans for international and CAA Media Finance for domestic.
Kate Freund (Afterlife) wrote the script.

It's been over two years since we first heard about "65," the sci-fi horror flick starring Adam Driver, but Sony Pictures is finally giving up the goods and giving us our first look at the highly-anticipated film. "65" has run the gamut regarding release dates, which can sometimes be a sign that a studio truly believes in the final product and is working toward the best possible release strategy. Based on the impressive creative team in front of and behind the camera, we can only hope this is the case.
Sony released a teaser for the trailer drop yesterday, featuring roughly 25 seconds of footage of Driver sleeping on the ground in what looks to be a cave on a desolate planet. The environment looks damp, dark, and filled with unseen terrors that Driver will certainly have to fight off.
The teaser starts with his character being awoken by a sensor alarm going off.

She’s set to star alongside previously announced cast members including Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldbum, Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater.
First introduced to the Great White Way in 2003, Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel of the same name — itself based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was previously adapted into MGM’s classic 1939 film of the same name. It’s a prequel to The Wizard of Oz which examines how the green-skinned Elphaba (Erivo) became the Wicked Witch of the West, as well as the sorceress Glinda’s (Grande) trajectory to becoming known as the Good Witch.
Yeoh will play Madame Morrible — a cohort of The Wizard (Goldblum) who serves as headmistress of Crage Hall at Shiz University.

Everyone’s involved in a hustle nowadays. The economy is in the trash, the job market is a joke, and making ends meets is a constant struggle for many. If you’re comfortable with where you’re at, consider yourself fortunate. Not everyone has that luxury, and in David Yate’s The Pain Hustlers, one woman is about to discover what it’s like to play dirty for those pulling the wool over the eyes of the public.
Catherine O’Hara, Andy Garcia, and Jay Duplass are joining Chris Evans and Emily Blunt in Yate’s upcoming film, debuting on Netflix. Brian d’Arcy James and Chloe Coleman also star.
A crime drama that warps perceptions of the American Dream, the official logline for The Pain Hustlers says the film follows an unemployed “blue-collar woman struggling to raise her daughter [who] takes a job at a failing pharmaceutical start-up, only to get involved in a dangerous racketeering scheme.

Michael Mann's classic 1995 movie "Heat" remains one of the finest and most influential action films to grace theaters, and even though Mann recently has released a sequel to the film in novel form, "Heat 2," he has every intention of preserving that legacy when he eventually adapts his sequel from page to screen. In his mission statement to make this sequel a bonafide cinematic experience, Mann also expressed hope to restore some spectacle back into the state of modern action filmmaking.
In an interview with Total Film, Mann was asked if he considered envisioning "Heat 2" as a television series. The filmmaker's response was measured, acknowledging that while a new Golden Age of television has arrived, the full scale of the cinematic experience is still unmatched for him.
At an Academy screening of "Heat," Mann felt renewed energy from audience members who had never seen the film on the big screen before.

“The Gray Man” is Netflix’s biggest action movie to date (its budget is said to be more than 200 million) – and one of its best.
The new Russo Brothers movie stars Ryan Gosling as the shadowy agent of the title, who gets involved in a job gone wrong and soon finds himself being hunted by Chris Evans as a mustachioed psychopath. Hollywood is currently in the midst of an era where women are treated with more respect in films compared to their counterparts in the 80s or 90s. Sure, we have great female role models like Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley, but those types of female characters are few and far in-between. However, there’s been a notable problem surfacing when it comes to female protagonists in the modern age, especially in action films like Gunpowder Milkshake or the Charlie Angels remake. These women are strong warriors. And that’s great! But that’s a big reason why most of these strong female protagonists

Karen Gillan is no stranger to blockbuster action, using her athleticism and gifted physical comedy chops to perfect effect in movies like the new "Jumanji" series or the "John Wick"-esque "Gunpowder Milkshake." As the angry, vulnerable assassin Nebula in the Marvel movies, she brought pathos and fear to the franchise, culminating in a time-travel showdown with her past self in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." Now, for Riley Stearns' latest film, "Dual," she faces herself again, playing both a terminally ill woman and the clone made to help her family cope. But when the illness vanishes, the two versions of this character must duel to death.
