Jessica Rothe is sharing an update on a third installment of Happy Death Day, and the star of the horror franchise is ready to face off with the Bayfield Babyface Killer once again.
In a new interview, while promoting her new film Boy Kills World, Rothe shared that director Chris Landon had an idea for the third film in the saga.
“I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out,” Rothe told Screen Geek. “We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row. But my fingers are so crossed.”
She continued, “I think Tree [Gelbman] deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning.”

Happy Death Day was a huge success for Blumhouse, grossing $125 million on a budget of just $4.8 million. The sequel didn’t quite hit those same numbers, but it still did well enough that fans were expecting to see Happy Death Day 3. Well, it’s been five years and not much has happened, despite writer/director Christopher Landon working on the script and star Jessica Rothe eager to return.
While speaking with ScreenGeek, Jessica Rothe gave a hopeful update regarding Happy Death Day 3.

It’s now been five years since the release of sequel Happy Death Day 2U, Christopher Landon’s sequel to the Groundhog Day-style slasher movie from 2017. Both films star Jessica Rothe as final girl Tree Gelbman, and director Christopher Landon had been planning on bringing the character – and the actor – back for a third installment. So… where is it?!
We’ve been talking about a potential Happy Death Day 3 for several years now, with the ball in producer Jason Blum’s court. Happy Death Day 2U scared up $64 million at the worldwide box office, a far cry from the first film’s $125 million. But with a reported production budget of just $9 million, that first sequel was profitable for Blumhouse. So again… where is it?!
Chatting with Screen Geek this week while promoting her new action-thriller Boy Kills World, franchise star Jessica Rothe provided a hopeful update on Happy Death Day 3.

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first, and we’ve previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus season 2), Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson, who has a large following on his parent-run Tik Tok account. Now Deadline reports that Jeffery Self of Search Party and The...

Audiences didn’t have a lot of new choices, nor a mega late-December blockbuster to ring in the first weekend of the new year at the movies, but the studio titles on offer are still drawing crowds and seeing strong holds, particularly with ongoing holidays in many international box office markets. Milestones are also being set as Warner Bros/Village Roadshow/Heyday Films’ Wonka topped $300M overseas while Disney’s Wish crossed $200M worldwide and AMC touted a new benchmark for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Though Swift lost out in the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category at the Golden Globes on Sunday, her movie has now grossed $261.6M worldwide, overtaking the previous global box office record holder for a documentary, Michael Jackson’s This is It, according to AMC.

When the trailer for Totally Killer was released a few weeks ago, there was a bit of an uproar on social media claiming that the film was ripping off The Final Girls (review). While there are undoubtedly similarities between the two films, Nahnatchka Khan‘s horror comedy has far more in common with something like Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day films (specifically Happy Death Day 2U) than that 2015 film, aiming for a more absurdist, comedy-forward take on the “time travel slasher” sub-genre that apparently exists now. It’s also an incredibly charming little film that wears its influences on its sleeves and has so much fun with them in the hopes that you will too.

The "X-Men" movie "Dark Phoenix" was hurt by upheaval at its studio, 20th Century Fox. The film was developed during the merger between Fox and Disney; in fact, "Dark Phoenix" was released on June 7, 2019, early into the new management's tenure. During that theatrical run, it made only $254 million on a $200 million budget, ultimately losing $133 million in the worst bomb of 2019.
It's tempting to think Disney undermined "Dark Phoenix." The movie was released as a lame duck, the last product assembled before all Marvel properties were back under Disney's umbrella. Marvel Studios would've doubtlessly preferred not to inherit a completed "X-Men" film, so that they could get to work on their own versions of the characters (even if the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought back some faces from Fox's "X-Men" movies since).
However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates there was another player who helped doom "Dark Phoenix" — James Cameron.

Earlier this month, we reported that Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors of A24's low-budget Australian horror sensation "Talk To Me," had already shot a prequel to the movie based around the character Duckett, who is the focal point of the movie's opening sequence. Some got the impression that the prequel was a full-length feature film. That wouldn't be too far-fetched, given that last year director Ti West revealed he'd secretly shot a prequel to his slasher movie "X," and "Pearl" landed in theaters just a few months later.
Now, the Brothers Philippou have offered some clarification in the October 2023 issue of Empire, explaining that the prequel is actually a "series of clips following Duckett's story, that were designed to be uploaded anonymously online. It's not a movie, by any stretch."

Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

We can breathe a sigh of relief, School Spirits Fanatics.
Paramount+ finally confirmed Tuesday afternoon that it had ordered School Spirits Season 2.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
School Spirits Season 1 wrapped on the streaming service in April with several cliffhangers.
The series stars Peyton List as Maddie Nears, a teenager trying to solve her murder.
While the YA market has been saturated with series in recent years, the series excelled in every area.
It boasted a compelling mystery, plenty of drama, and lots of potential for future seasons.
"We saw how engaged the fans of the show were, and we're really excited about not only the creative direction of the show [in season one], but the promise of the creative direction we're aware of in the second season," Shauna Phelan, executive vp and co-head of Nickelodeon and Awesomeness live-action series and films, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Horror has never been my genre. I don't find myself as invested in the macabre as most do, and when a film tries to scare me and it doesn't, I just end up annoyed. Consequently, I end up skipping quite a few horror movies in theaters, regardless of how the horror community reacts to them (because they generally will give the genre far more slack than I will). One of those films I skipped was 2017's "Happy Death Day," despite its positive reviews. I went, "Okay. It's a 'Groundhog Day' slasher," and never gave it a second thought.
Two years later, "Happy Death Day 2U" hits theaters. It was receiving even better press than the first one, and based on the trailer, this one was leaning further into the camp and craziness of it all. I decide to give it a shot. Color me shocked, I had an absolute blast.

Christopher Landon is the reigning king of the horror-comedy, having directed time-loop chiller “Happy Death Day” (and its underrated follow-up) and “Freaky,” the only body-swapping slasher movie you’ll ever need. His latest, “We Have a Ghost” on Netflix, is his attempt at a more family-friendly hybrid.
The new movie follows a family (led by Anthony Mackie) who move into a house haunted by a schlubby specter (David Harbour). What follows is a wild bouillabaisse of different tones and genres, as it flits through being – at various points and sometimes all at once – a social media satire, a murder mystery and, somehow, a spy thriller.
In some ways, though, “We Have a Ghost” feels like the movie Landon has been working toward his entire career.
Landon has always been interested in the cheeky mixing-and-matching of styles. One of his first sold (and produced) screenplays was for “Disturbia” back in 2007.

Christopher Landon has quietly established himself as one of the most original voices in the horror genre. Adopting a slightly campy, fun-loving approach, Landon wrote and directed a series of movies for Blumhouse that are beloved by fans: Happy Death Day and its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, and the underrated Freaky. Now, working with a much bigger budget, Landon’s been able to stretch out with his latest film for Netflix, We Have a Ghost, which stars David Harbour as a ghost haunting a house owned by Anthony Mackie and his family.
Unlike most other haunted house movies, Harbour’s silent ghost, Ernest, has a heart of gold and becomes BFFs with Jahi Winston’s Kevin, the family’s long-ignored son who comes into his own, protecting Ernest from his somewhat opportunistic father. Eventually, Kevin and Ernest try to unravel the amnesia-stricken ghost’s past in a family adventure...

Happy Death Day (watch it Here) and Happy Death Day 2U (watch that one Here) director Christopher Landon let it be known as soon as Happy Death Day 2U was released that he had plans for a Happy Death Day 3 (which would be called Happy Death Day to Us). But while Happy Death Day had earned a sequel by making over $125 million at the global box office on a budget that was just under $5 million, the third film hasn’t happened because Happy Death Day 2U only made $64 million. That’s pretty good for a movie that cost $9 million… but distributor Universal Pictures was hesitant to make a follow-up to movie that made so much less than its predecessor. And during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Landon revealed that one reason why he can’t get a greenlight for Happy Death Day 3 is the fact that it would require an even higher budget.

Christopher Landon wants to show you that he’s more than just the maestro behind two beloved comedic slasher properties, Happy Death Day and Freaky. His new supernatural family dramedy, We Have a Ghost, is not only a jump to a new subgenre, but it’s also a leap to bigger-budget filming, as his three recent Blumhouse films cost less than $20 million combined. Landon’s pivot has both personal and professional motivations attached to it, in that he wanted to be able to share his work with his oldest child and not repeat himself at the same time.
“I just didn’t want to get pigeonholed. I don’t want to have to make the same movie over and over again, and if you want something to change in your career, you have to kind of figure it out yourself,” Landon tells The Hollywood Reporter.

School is difficult enough, but it's about to be more difficult for a teenager named Maddie (played by Peyton List), tasked with solving her murder.
Paramount+ dropped the official teaser for School Spirits this week, and it looks set to be one of the most talked-about shows of the year so far.
The trailer introduces us to Maddie, a teenager who finds herself dead, and her spirit is stuck at school.
Maddie has no idea how she died, but she can see the reactions from the other students in the school as she tries to comprehend how she got stuck there.
The minute she tries to step foot off the school grounds, she's taken back to the crime scene.
It's a compelling hook for a teen drama, and the official trailer makes it seem like this one is worth watching.

In the mood for a good haunting but don’t want to be scared?
Then, you might want to check out the new trailer for We Have a Ghost. The comedy is a Netflix original starring the streaming service’s Stranger Things star, David Harbour, and Anthony Mackie. Harbour’s spectre is the friendliest ghost outside of Casper and hijinks ensue when he and Mackie’s family start co-existing as local celebrities.
The official Netflix synopsis reads,
“Ernest the ghost, discovered by the homeowner who named him that because the apparation looks like Ernest Borgnine. The homeowner Frank, begins filming his ghost and posting it for the world to see on social media. Ernest becomes a viral sensation.

Happy Death Day (watch it Here) and Happy Death Day 2U (watch that one Here) director Christopher Landon appears to be losing hope that Happy Death Day 3 (which would be called Happy Death Day to Us) is ever going to happen. Although he, producer Jason Blum, and franchise star Jessica Rothe all want to make one more movie in the series, distributor Universal is less enthusiastic about the idea because Happy Death Day 2U wasn’t as successful as its predecessor. And Landon believes that as we get further from the second film’s 2019 release date, the chances of Happy Death Day 3 happening get lower.
When asked if there was any progress on Happy Death Day 3, Landon told Slash Film, “No movement at all, sadly. There was a tiny moment where I really felt like I had Universal’s attention, but they forgot about me. [laughs] I think it’s a really tough one for them,...

Orchestrators Jonathan Beard, Ed Trybek, and Henri Wilkinson are known as the Tutti Music Partners, and they had a gargantuan task in bringing composer Bear McCreary's score to life for "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." Each episode contains around an hour of music, which the trio completed in a span of six months. With a massive orchestra, each episode was about as challenging and as enjoyable as orchestrating for a feature film.
Beard, Trybek, and Wilkinson are no strangers to McCreary's compositions. They've been working with the composer since 2009 on a variety of projects, including "10 Cloverfield Lane," "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," and "Happy Death Day 2U." They have a deep understanding of his music and what he does or doesn't need. Christopher Landon (Freaky) will write and direct an Arachnophobia remake for Amblin Partners, Deadline can confirm.
The original 1990 horror-comedy starring Jeff Daniels watched as a species of South American killer spiders hitched a lift to the U.S. in a coffin—subsequently beginning to breed and kill within a small California town. Frank Marshall directed in his feature debut, with Julian Sands, Harley Jane Kozak and John Goodman rounding out the cast. Walt Disney Studios subsidiary Hollywood Pictures produced the pic, which grossed 53.21M against a 22M budget.
Amblin is partnering on the remake with James Wan’s Atomic Monster, with Wan (Malignant) and Michael Clear (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) set to produce, and Judson Scott on board as executive producer. Marshall will also exec produce, with President of Production Jeb Brody overseeing the project for Amblin, alongside EVP Lauren Abrahams and SVP Mia Maniscalco.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is an odd one. There’s about four different timelines despite not that many movies, and although the quality has actually been good (for the most part), none have really got close to the sheer sense of terror that the first movie delivered. As always though, I was very much excited to see the latest movie.
This one is a direct sequel to the original movie and not linked to any other sequels that came before it. A new timeline altogether set in present-day almost fifty years after the original as Leatherface is once again disrupted by a new group of young friends and is soon getting to...

“Texas Chainsaw Massacre” — not to be confused with “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” (1972) or “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (2003) — is the ninth film in the nearly 50-year-old “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series. It’s also at least the fourth “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,” and at least the third “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2” that ignores all the other sequels.
Canon? What’s canon? Canon got shot out of a cannon, and into some chain saws. Or, as this franchise sometimes likes to spell them, “chainsaws.”
All you need to know going into David Blue Garcia’s latest installment is that way back in the 1970s, a group of young travelers took a pitstop at the Sawyer family residence, and all but one of them were brutally murdered by that family of cannibals. The only surviving victim, Sally Hardesty, became a Texas Ranger who hunted elusive serial killer Leatherface for decades, but dang it, she never found the guy.

Don’t let her IMDb page fool you, because despite roles in such scary properties as “Happy Death Day 2U,” the witchy series “Motherland: Fort Salem,” and the zombie comedy “Eat Brains Love,” actress Sarah Yarkin’s personal tastes don’t tend to naturally run toward horror. That’s fine when it comes to comedy or singing, but when it comes to something like a lead role in the new Netflix sequel to the classic chiller “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” Yarkin knows she’ll have to get out of her own head.

The current state of the world made the cinematic release of body-swap horror comedy Freaky a little underwhelming, but it was enjoyed by the large majority of people who actually had the chance to see it. Creator Christopher Landon has already stated that it could exist in the same universe as the Happy Death Days, and those movies’ star, Jessica Rothe, is open to the idea of a crossover.
Happy Death Day and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U see a college student becoming stuck in a time loop where she’s repeatedly killed by a masked murderer on the night of her birthday. Freaky, meanwhile, finds a high school student become the latest target of a serial killer, only for the two of them to swap bodies due to the power of an ancient dagger. Although Happy Death Day and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U are well-loved among fans, the prospect of a Happy Death Day 3 is currently up in the air due to current world conditions and the subsequent state of the movie industry. Despite the uncertainty, however, series director Christopher Landon is hopeful of the possibility of production eventually going ahead.
The franchise is an inventive take on slasher movies, seeing college student Tree Gelbman murdered by a masked assailant on the night of her birthday, only to wake up the previous morning with the memory of what happened. No matter what she tries to do, she keeps being killed and re-awakening, so uses the unique opportunity to investigate who wants her dead.

Writer-director Christopher Landon is no stranger to the horror genre. As his new film “Freaky” arrives in theaters today, audiences best know Landon for his other recent comedic horror films. He was behind the camera for “Happy Death Day,” and its sequel “Happy Death Day 2U,” which he also wrote. While there may yet be another installment in the “Happy Death Day” series to complete the trilogy, Landon also plays a massive role in another successful series produced by Blumhouse: the “Paranormal Activity” films.

Over the last decade plus, writer-director Christopher Landon has quietly crafted a consistently engaging, stealth career as a filmmaker deeply conversant in the tropes, traditions, and conventions of the horror genre and a willing subverter of those tropes, traditions, and conventions. It ranges from the Rear Window with a coming-of-age combo of Disturbia in 2007, through key contributions to the found footage sub-genre, including Paranormal Activity 2-4 and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, through the less successful teen comedy-undead hybrid of Scouts Guide to the Apocalypse, to the double career triumph of Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. His latest genre contribution, Freaky, a Freaky Friday meets Friday the 13th horror-comedy, doesn’t quite the Happy Death Day series for its brilliantly absurdist riff(s)...

It’s such a perfect concept for a horror comedy it’s a wonder no one has done it before: a hulking great male serial killer swaps bodies with a tiny, dorky teenage girl – chaos ensues. ‘Freaky Friday The 13th,’ as the idea was initially pitched by co-writer Michael Kennedy. In the hands of Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2 U director, Christopher Landon, you get exactly what you expect – a funny, sharp teen romp full of inventive kills and excessive comedy gore.

Finding the right balance between horror and comedy is one of the hardest things to pull off successfully on film, but writer/director Christopher Landon has done it twice with Happy Death Day (2017) and its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, in which a college student played by Jessica Rothe keeps reliving the same day on which she dies…and then gets to relive it in a different dimension.
Now Landon gets a shot at a horror/comedy trifecta with Freaky, in which Kathryn Newton plays a high schooler who inadvertently swaps bodies with a hulking, unstoppable serial killer called the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn) and must find a way to get back to her own body before the change becomes permanent.
Landon, who co-wrote the movie with Michael Kennedy, tells Den of Geek that the film wasn’t initially what he was looking to do after finishing up his Happy Death Day duo.

Slasher horror and comedy can co-exist, as most recently demonstrated by director Christopher Landon with “Happy Death Day” and its underrated sequel, “Happy Death Day 2U.” That same lightning doesn’t quite strike again with Landon’s latest, “Freaky”; some of the laughs and some of the scares definitely land, but overall, the two genres resist blending into a successful mix.
The unspoken joke of the title is that this movie really wants to be called “Freaky Friday the 13th,” which is not a bad starting point, but the line dividing gory violence and farcical hilarity — which Landon has skillfully walked in the past — gets too blurry for the movie’s own good.
The “Friday the 13th” part involves The Butcher (Vince Vaughn), a brutal serial killer who has somehow simultaneously wreaked bloody havoc on a seemingly idyllic town but also retained urban-legend status among the town’s teens. In the film’s prologue,...

Back in 2017, Blumhouse scored a big hit with writer/director Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day, a sci-fi/horror comedy in which an excellent Jessica Rothe played a college student who keeps waking up to relive the day on which a serial killer slaughters her.
A sort of hybrid of Scream and Groundhog Day, Happy Death Day was acclaimed by critics, earned $125 million at the box office and was followed two years later by Happy Death Day 2U, which continued the story but emphasized a more sci-fi angle to the tale as Roth’s character found herself in an alternate dimension.
Happy Death Day 2U, however, while profitable, grossed half the box office of its predecessor. Although Landon and Blumhouse had announced plans to turn the series into a trilogy, development on Happy Death Day 3 (working title) seemed to peter out after the less enthusiastic response to the second film.
