Pedro Pascal has always been an extremely prolific actor, and his track record is nothing short of impressive — but he only received real-real recognition after 2019’s The Mandalorian. This instant classic Star Wars TV show saw Pascal become a reluctant father figure for a teenage girl he’d come across in a dangerous world…
But we bet the actor was having severe deja vu while filming it, because by then, he had already done the same thing in an overlooked 2018 sci-fi Western!
Pascal Feels Natural in Father Figure Roles
We’re not even joking: Pedro Pascal’s “reluctant father” archetype started in his 2018 movie Prospect — a low-budget sci-fi drama that didn’t get the recognition it deserved. In Prospect, his character also finds himself in a hostile environment and suddenly has to take care of a teenage girl he stumbles upon out in the wilderness. Fun, isn’t it?

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has won a competitive auction and sealed a high-six figure outright purchase of The Dwelling, an unpublished short story by Aaron Jayh. Michael B. Jordan and Liz Raposo’s Outlier Society are attached to produce. Jordan is potentially starring.
Adapting the mind-bending story will be Aaron Guzikowski, the scribe best known for Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners and Apple TV’s Raised by Wolves. Jordan and Raposo will produce with Ground Control’s Scott Glassgold.
Several studios bid and put together talent alignments, but it came down to Amazon and Netflix, sources said.
The Dwelling tells the story of a newly divorced father who discovers a house buried in his backyard. He is a former all pro football player trying to ease into retirement, and the hits he took on the field starts to make him unsure what is real and imagined, as things begin to go awry.

Yellowjackets is back and breaking more records for Showtime, and we're not surprised.
The series burst onto the scene in 2021, delivering a compelling concept and fine acting, becoming one of the buzziest shows on the air.
The anticipation for Yellowjackets Season 2 was off the charts, so the show would inevitably continue to scale new heights.
But how well did Yellowjackets Season 2 Episode 1 perform?
Showtime has revealed that the highly-anticipated return secured nearly 2 million viewers across platforms.
According to the premium cabler, that number marks the best season two premiere for the network in more than 10 years and nearly double the series premiere audience.

The Season 2 premiere of Yellowjackets delivered Showtime‘s best debut for a second installment that the network has seen in more than 10 years.
Sunday’s episode raked in nearly 2M viewers across all platforms, according to Showtime. The network didn’t provide a specific viewing number. It’s difficult to compare the first and second season launches, because similar data isn’t available for the Season 1 debut. The Season 1 finale drew 1.3M viewers.
Season 1, which earned a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and received seven Emmy nominations, averaged more than 5M weekly viewers across platforms, the highest for a freshman series on the network in almost six years, since Billions in early 2016. It was the second-most streamed series in Showtime history.
With the debut of Season 2, Yellowjackets now holds the title for the No. 1 season debut for Showtime on digital platforms, beating out Dexter: New Blood for the honor.

The tightly-woven mysteries at the center of Yellowjackets are about to be exposed.
Showtime dropped the official trailer for Yellowjackets Season 2 on Thursday, and it looks like a stellar follow-up to the first season.
The trailer is chilling and offers excellent insight into what to expect in the coming episodes.
It also features Florence + The Machine's cover of "Just a Girl," which was inspired by the show.
"Once upon a time, there was a place called the wilderness," we hear in the trailer.
"It was beautiful. But it was also violent and misunderstood and it waited and waited to befriend whoever arrived."
"The whole time, there was some darkness out there," adult Natalie (Juliette Lewis) says.
"I thought we left it there when we were rescued, but now I realize, we brought it back with us," adult Lottie (Simone Kessell) says in the clip.
We also hear Misty and Natalie speak about Lottie.

This post contains spoilers for "The Last of Us" season 1, episode 6, "Kin."
Truly, Pedro Pascal's dad powers know no bounds. Whether he's using them to elevate the film around him (like in "Prospect") or deploying them to act under a mask (as in "The Mandalorian"), the man can play a gruff, grumpy father or a stoic-loner-turned-adopted-parent with a heart of gold like nobody's business. Really, the only thing he's better at than playing laconic dads might be playing fast-talking, disapproving mothers.
While HBO's "The Last of Us" has yet to call upon Pascal to utilize that particular set of skills, it has nevertheless afforded him the chance to showcase his full range as an actor while still operating firmly in irascible dad mode. Yet, even after five episodes of dramatic storytelling ranging from bittersweet to devastating, few scenes have allowed Pascal to shine quite like a key moment in episode 6, "Kin.

As a massive fan of the original games, one of the more rewarding aspects of watching "The Last of Us" be retold in live action is seeing lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey add their own personal flair to our beloved pair, Joel and Ellie. On paper, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have kept the show extremely faithful to the original games, story, and characters. However, because Ramsey and Pascal were discouraged from playing the games before embodying their roles, they've been able to imbue their own subtle reinterpretations and trademarks into their performances.
Ramsey has consistently nailed it as Ellie, stealing every moment and dramatic beat of the series so far with a youthful pluckiness and emotional edge that is reminiscent of, but totally distinct from, Ashley Johnson's original motion-capture performance of the character.

This past weekend, the 2022 SXSW Film Festival hosted the world premiere of the meta genre-bending comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which was directed by Tom Gormican and co-written by Gormican and Kevin Etten. The story is set around the iconic cinematic phenom known as Nicolas Cage, who is down on his luck and decides to take a gig where he’s paid to show up at a superfan’s (played by Pedro Pascal) birthday party and ends up getting mixed up in some governmental espionage where things get just a little too “real” for Cage and his new best pal.
While in Austin, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Gormican and Etten following the premiere of Massive Talent about the unusual project and whether or not they ever thought about what would happen if Cage had turned down playing a version of himself for the film.

Whoaaaa! This looks awesome. There's a badass new project in the works from the two talented filmmakers Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell, best known for turning their short into a feature film called Prospect. Their latest idea is called The Fringe, and it's essentially a new "sci-fi, cinematic universe" set in space following scavengers or freelancers called Drifters: miners, engineers, bounty hunters, trappers, mercenaries, gastrotechs. They've decided to dip into NFTs to try "new model of film financing that will put full creative control back into the hands of the film's artistic team." The Nft collection will be comprised of in-world characters called Drifters. "The Nft project will be an immersive narrative experience that will introduce fans to the universe in novel ways, creating a portal into the world’s lore via the art and other integrated mediums like an in-world compendium." Sounds cool. There's a teaser out for The...

As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.
There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.
Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, “Yellowjackets” is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.
The series’ trailer aptly plays on the disparate themes of “Yellowjacket.

Showtime’s upcoming survival drama “Yellowjackets” put its young cast through the ringer, forcing them to confront tough environments and psychologically taxing scenarios to tell the story of a girls soccer team whose plane crashes in the remote northern wilderness.
The “Lord of the Flies”-esque series unfolds across two timelines, with the teenage version of the central cast trying to survive in the wilderness and their fully grown selves attempting to piece back together their lives 25 years later. The drama, led by Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey and Tawny Cypress, is described as “equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama.”
“We knew we didn’t want this to be a show about what happened, but about why it happened,” series co-creator Ashley Lyle said, previewing the show during a Television Critics Association panel on Wednesday. “And so we figured the best way to do that...

Freelance animator Marcus Kliewer was already having a rough year when the pandemic hit. Supported by a Canadian unemployment program, the Vancouver resident decided to pour his energy into writing short horror stories and posting them on Reddit’s r/nosleep community.
The 28-year-old posted his first story of the pandemic in September. Three months later, his work was discovered by Ground Control Entertainment’s Scott Glassgold. In June, Netflix announced a screen-rights deal for his story “We Used to Live Here,” with Blake Lively attached to star and produce alongside Ground Control and Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho.
“If it wasn’t for Cerb (the unemployment program), I would be landscaping right now,” Kliewer told IndieWire. “Instead, I was writing six days a week full time.”
Kliewer said he also made a two book, high-six-figure deal with a major publishing company; he’s not saying which one, since it’s yet to be announced.

A great way to celebrate Pride this year is with The Signifyin’ Works of Marlon Riggs, a Criterion Collection box set that pays tribute to an essential voice in LGBTQ+ cinema and Black filmmaking. The Mandalorian has proven to be so successful for Disney and its streaming platform that the company is now supposedly exploring the viability of developing several spinoffs. There’s a joke to be made here, we’re sure, considering that Din Djarin’s story is itself an offshoot of the main Star Wars film franchise, but the House of Mouse seemingly isn’t fazed in the slightest.

You’re probably not hurting for things to watch on Netflix so far this month thanks to the platform’s seemingly endless content drops that provide plenty of incredible new films and shows to dive into. But if you’ve already given a look to such big titles as Knock Knock, Yes Man, Prospect and Ocean’s Eleven, you may be eager for something fresh to add to your list. Lucky for you, today’s drop is adding an extremely popular comic book movie that many consider to be one of the best of all-time.
V for Vendetta is a 2005 action thriller that’s based on the 1988 comic series of the same name. After a stellar October full of spooky flicks and other great releases, Netflix has already come out swinging in November, too. The initial few drops of the month have brought a solid collection of fresh content guaranteed to be filled with at least a few things that you’re going to be anxious to add to your list, such as the hilarious family comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop, unnerving sci-fi flick Prospect, and the Keanu Reeves thriller Knock Knock.
But if you’re feeling a little impatient and want to begin planning out your December schedule, too, you’ll love this good news – Netflix has already announced a pretty nice selection of additions coming next month, including a handful of highly-anticipated originals.

"Some of us have the proclivity for greatness, while others do not." Have you visited this planet yet? A new official trailer has debuted for an underrated indie sci-fi film titled Prospect, which originally premiered at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival and opened in theaters later that year. It's now available on Netflix - which is why they're kicking off some new promotion. This excellent little sci-fi set on a far away moon is a feature adaptation of a short film made by Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell in 2014 (watch here). The film is about a teen girl and her father who travel to a remote moon on the hunt for elusive riches. They discover others hiding in the moon's toxic forest and their visit quickly devolves into a desperate fight to escape. We’ve just hit November, and that means a whole new month of material for Netflix subscribers. The platform is adding a lot of content for this period, including the latest instalment of The Crown, and several of its Christmas titles ahead of the festive season. Focusing on this week, though, what movies and series are Netflix putting out to keep us busy?
Well, first up on November 2nd is the 2018 science fiction film Prospect, which sees Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher as a father and daughter team who travel to a moon to mine for rare gems, but soon encounter bigger problems. Artist collaborations have become so common in music that most of the songs that have topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 2020 have been team-ups. But despite musicians trading verses every which way, it’s rare for one artist to have multiple nominations for Record of the Year in the same year. ABC Scraps ‘Thirtysomething’ Sequel Pilot, Vampire Drama ‘The Brides’ as Remaining Slate Takes Shape
ABC has made a range of decisions on its remaining pilots this season, which were all shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Firstly, the network is scrapping its pilots for the dramas “The Brides” and “Thirtysomething(else)” and the comedy “Valley Trash.” The news is surprising for “The Brides” — a female-led vampire soap opera with “Riverdale’s” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writing — and “Thirtysometing(else) — a sequel series to the classic dramedy “Thirtysomething” with the original creators and multiple original cast members returnin. ABC has handed out a pilot pickup to Adopted, a single-camera comedy co-written and executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel. It hails from ABC Studios and Kimmelot, Kimmel’s joint venture with Brent Montgomery’s Wheelhouse Entertainment.
Written and executive produced by Kimmel and The Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse creators, executive producers and stars Shawn Vance and Daril Fannin, Adopted is inspired by a true story. In it, when a Green Beret returns home to Texas from military service, he and his family struggle with the challenges of adopting his new brother, a 12-year-old Russian boy.
Vance and Fannin are both military veterans — Vance is a former United States Special forces Green Beret, and Fanin, a former combat army medic. They used their background for their Netflix hybrid scripted/unscripted action comedy series The Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse, which was executive produced by Matt Damon and Peter Perg.
