As Netflix’s library of films ebbs and flows, finding the right movie to watch can feel like bailing out an ocean with a spoon. And if you’re looking for a quality horror movie in particular, the search only gets harder. With the reality that Horror is one of the cheapest genres to produce, streamers like Netflix are cluttered with a veritable tsunami of bloody titles that sometimes seem indistinguishable from one another.
If you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch on Netflix that will truly scare you, picking a final selection can prove a more daunting task than sitting through yet another “Haunting of Hill House” rewatch; with or without its beloved “Bly Manor” chaser. But while the streamer’s priorities seem to shift as quickly as its content selection grows, Netflix’s horror library remains a high point — with original triumphs, including Guillermo del Toro...

Exclusive: Richard Shepard has signed with Tfc. The move reunites the Emmy and DGA Award-winning director-writer with former WME partner David Stone who founded the management company in 2020 with UTA’s Ben Jacobson.
“I’m super psyched to be back in business with David Stone,” said Shepard who was a client of Stone’s at WME years ago. “He’s one of the smartest guys in the business, and along with Zach Carlisle and the rest of the folks at Tfc I’m excited for this next chapter.”
Shepard has directed 10 television pilots that have gone to series — or the tone-setting pilot episodes of shows with straight-to-series orders — including Criminal Minds, Ugly Betty, for which he won an Emmy, Rosewood, Salem, Sweetbitter, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Acapulco, now in its third season on Apple. Shepard also directed 12 episodes of HBO’s Girls, several episodes of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale,...

It took Richard Shepard years to get out of “movie jail” after he made “The Linguini Incident,” the nearly-forgotten 1991 crime comedy starring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette. But now the film is getting a second chance, with a series of screenings and an upcoming Blu-ray release.
Just about everything went wrong with the production that could go wrong, Shepard recalls. “I made this movie when I was 25 — and I was no genius at 25,” admits the director, who went on to helm features including “The Perfection” as well as TV series like Lena Dunham’s HBO comedy “Girls.”
Unlike Dunham, who was “in complete control of her artistic self” at that age, “I was not,” says Shepard.
But when his original co-producer, Sarah Jackson, suggested he try to rerelease a director’s cut of the scrappy indie caper about two restaurant employees who decide to rob their bosses, Shepard jumped at...

Happy New Year! ‘Terror Train’ Dares to Ask Whether Dying Is Preferable to Watching a Bad Magic Show
On Friday nights — and special occasions!— IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: You Know, Getting Murdered on a Train Might Still Be Better Than Going to Times Square
The underwhelming New Year’s Eve party is a universal human experience if there ever was one. The holiday is ostensibly the biggest night of the year for debauchery, but burnout, outlandish expectations, and rowdy crowds often turn it into a letdown that makes it a little easier to trade our holiday cheer in for January discipline. But no matter what disappointing experience comes your way tonight, you can take comfort...

Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

“The Perfection” is the only movie from 2019 still keeping me up at night.
That’s not because it features the single most forced amputations of any Netflix original I have ever witnessed; and it’s not because writer/director Richard Shepard manages to simultaneously tap into both my fears of vomiting and maggots via Logan Browning’s mouth at minute 27.
Rather, the singularly strange lezzie body horror gets under my skin because of how and where I watch it. The streaming age is unpredictable and perilous,...

Long Live The New Flesh, Bitch!
And just like that, we’re into February. After starting the new year with a redo of our episode on The Perfection, followed by AIDS metaphor Safe, del Toro’s Gothic Romance Crimson Peak and slasher remake House of Wax, Trace and I are settling into our birthday month with four weeks of ‘Weird Sex’ films.
First on the docket: David Cronenberg‘s iconic body horror film Videodrome, which just celebrated its fortieth anniversary last week. In the film, Max Renn (James Woods) works at a Toronto TV station that programs sexy, violent content and he’s always on the hunt for new fare. Enter Videodrome: a pirated signal originally thought to originate from Malaysia (but is actually from Pittsburgh) that is basically snuff.
The trouble is that Videodrome is also a weapon, causing physical changes in the body of viewers (tumors), as well as vivid hallucinations.

After kicking off 2023 with a re-do of one of our earliest episodes (The Perfection), we moved on to Todd Haynes’ AIDS allegory Safe before tackling Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic romance Crimson Peak. Now, we’re venturing back into the world of Dark Castle Entertainment with a fun discussion of Jaume Collet-Serra‘s 2005 remake House of Wax.
In the film, a gang of college friends, including Wade (Jared Padalecki), his girlfriend Carly (Elisha Cuthbert) and her twin brother Nick (Chad Michael Murray), are en route to a school football game when their car mysteriously loses its fan belt. They are forced to seek help in the nearby town of Ambrose, which boasts a literal house of wax. Once inside the spooky and seemingly abandoned building, they find the works on display are not quite what they seem, and the friends soon discover that they are being hunted...

Science fiction film M3GAN was undoubtedly the first big hit of 2023, with the film grossing 90 million globally in the first two weeks of its release. Though some have expressed disappointment about the film’s lack of horror (some reshoots were necessary in order to give it a PG-13 rating) there’s no denying that the film has been a giant success.
All of this must feel amazing to Allison Williams, who both stars in the film (as Gemma) and took on the role of executive producer for the first time. In spite of her success with her role on Girls, Williams has only done four movies in the nearly six years since the show has been off the air. As it turns out, she has a good reason for it — she takes herself, and her profession, very seriously.

Horror’s queerness has always been tied to the other. Whether we’re talking about literal monsters, as in the case of Bride of Frankenstein, or the queer-coded nature of Hays Code-era films like Cat People一or even decades-later queer vehicles Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde and Sleepaway Camp一there’s always been a queer pulse throbbing inside horror storytelling.
In recent years, the ability to tell LGBTQ+ tales and the boldness with which you could play around in that sandbox has shifted tremendously. Within the last 20 years, the horror lens has refocused on allowing actual unapologetically queer stories to be told, from 2004’s Hellbent to more recent fare like Freaky and The Perfection. Thankfully, we also live in a world where So Vam and Children of Sin can exist, two of last year’s most surprising releases that relish in queerness while deconstructing unchecked homophobia and religious trauma. In both, it’s...

After ringing in the New Year with the gayest slasher ever made, Trace and I are doing something that Horror Queers has never done: we’re revisiting a film we’ve already covered!
The film in question is a favorite: Richard Shepard‘s The Perfection, which debuted at Fantastic Fest back in 2018 before premiering on Netflix in May 2019. We covered the film on our Patreon, but received criticism from a few folks about how we handled the discussion of sexual assault (which C/W: this is a secret rape/revenge film!)
In The Perfection, cello star Charlotte (Allison Williams) returns after a long sabbatical to reunite with her mentor Anton (Steven Webber) and court his new protégé, Lizzie (Logan Browning). But the pair’s vacation goes horribly awry when Lizzie becomes sick, ending with an act of mutilation. This, in turn, initiates a string of violent encounters...

This past weekend, a new horror icon arrived in the form of a sassy killer doll named M3GAN, who is brought to life in the film by Gemma, a determined purveyor of innovation who wants to push the boundaries of AI in our everyday lives by creating a best friend for kids that caters to their every need. Played by Allison Williams, Gemma is a character we don’t see a lot of these days in Hollywood, which was just one of the many aspects of M3GAN that this writer thoroughly enjoyed.

If Allison Williams is starring in a horror movie, it's a guarantee that we're in for one hell of a ride. After her breakthrough performance on the hit HBO series "Girls," Williams cemented herself in horror history by starring opposite Daniel Kaluuya in "Get Out," Jordan Peele's masterwork debut feature that completely changed the game for studio horror films. Her follow-up feature performance was in the twisty Netflix exploitation thriller, "The Perfection," a criminally underseen gem that needs to be at the top of your watch list.
Now, Williams is returning for her third venture into the genre with the newest Blumhouse flick boasting a horror dream team of creatives, "M3GAN." Williams stars as Gemma, a brilliant roboticist who invents a lifelike robotic companion meant to act as a child's best friend and a parent's "greatest ally." There's only one massive problem: M3GAN is protective, defensive, and learning.

Williams stars as Gemma, a brilliant roboticist who invents a lifelike robotic companion meant to act as a child's best friend and a parent's "greatest ally." There's only one massive problem: M3GAN is protective, defensive, and learning.

Is a PG-13 rating the kiss of death for horror in modern Hollywood? Sure, it can be, but it doesn't have to be. As anyone who's seen Sam Raimi's gleefully gooey and gross "Drag Me to Hell" can testify, a PG-13 horror movie can be just as nasty and twisted as its R-rated brethren (if not more so). In fact, director Gerard Johnstone has cited Raimi's 2009 hit as one of the films that gave him the confidence to embrace PG-13 with the reshoots for his dancing killer A.I. robot thriller "M3GAN."
On the off-chance you've missed the plethora of trailers, TV spots, and memes showing the film's namesake getting her murder-groove on, "M3GAN" centers on Gemma ("Get Out" and "The Perfection" star Allison Williams), a toy company roboticist whose new creation -- the titular M3GAN, who looks a bit like an uncanny CGI doll-sized version of...

Movie monsters are incredible. The greats of Rick Baker, Phil Tippett, and Greg Nicotero — among many others — have rendered screens both small and large as monstrous gateways to unabashed nightmare fuel. Whether culled from mythology or the classics of the genre, these creations are a tentpole of the enduring monster movie or creature feature. However conceptualized, movie monsters are as much a part of what movies innately are as anything else.
Every year brings new monsters to the table. Some are relegated to indie VOD offerings, some theatrical bows, and some in a weird space between. Here, we'll be taking a look at the 10 scariest movie monsters of 2022. These beasties proved frighteningly fun; some rendered with computer effects, some conceived practically, and all stupendously scary. They're destined to take a bite out of you.

New Queer’s Eve.
It’s been a pretty wild December, with us covering off-kilter films like the much-maligned Batman & Robin, the not-as-bad-as-you-think Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings and the Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins-penned murder mystery The Last of Sheila. Now we’re wrapping up the year with a discussion of Carter Smith‘s Into the Dark entry “Midnight Kiss“!
In the film, a group of friends gather at a beautiful desert resort on New Year’s Eve, and play a game called Midnight Kiss, as is their tradition. The purpose of the game is for each of them to find someone with whom to start the New Year. When a killer tries to join in, relationships that are already stressed are further tested, and life itself becomes the prize.

Richard Shepard, writer/director of the Netflix-released horror film The Perfection (read our review Here), and his co-writers Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder are teaming up again to develop a supernatural mystery called St. Donatus for the Peacock streaming service, Deadline reports. Anyone who's ever seen a James Wan horror movie knows the man is downright terrified of human-like dolls, as well as he should be. So it's no surprise to see him involved in the making of "M3GAN," the upcoming Blumhouse thriller about a killer doll that looks like a cross between Annabelle from "The Conjuring" and the teched-out Buddi doll version of Chucky from the "Child's Play" remake.
Allison Williams, who's quickly evolved into a Scream Queen of twisted modern horror thanks to her roles in "Get Out" and "The Perfection," stars in "M3GAN" as Gemma, a roboticist who comes up with the design for the titular doll (voiced by Kimberley Crossman), a life-like A.I. toy that's "programmed to be a child's greatest companion and a parent's greatest ally," as the film's synopsis words it. But just as Gemma finds herself under increased pressure at work to finalize the M3GAN prototype,...

Allison Williams has boarded the upcoming Showtime limited series “Fellow Travelers” alongside Matt Bomer, Variety has learned exclusively.
The series was picked up at Showtime back in April with an eight-episode order. It is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Mallon.
The show is described as an epic love story and political thriller, chronicling the volatile romance of two very different men who meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer will play the handsome, charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin, a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith. They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history.
Williams will star as Lucy Smith, the daughter of a prominent U.

It’s been a decade since Lena Dunham was the voice of her generation. Or, well, a voice of a generation.
HBO series “Girls” revolutionized the TV landscape when it premiered on April 15, 2012. The series, created by Dunham, who also starred in, executive-produced, wrote, and directed the show, first debuted at SXSW before its TV premiere and eventual five Emmy Award nominations that year. Jenni Konner served as co-showrunner and producer while Judd Apatow also executive produced.
“Girls” stars Dunham as 20-something struggling writer Hannah Horvath, who has one foot in adolescence thanks to an allowance from her parents. After she’s informed she’s been financially cut off two years after graduating from a liberal arts college, Hannah embarks on navigating New York City by experiencing one mistake at a time.
Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Allison Williams play Hannah’s eccentric and at times codependent circle of friends.

“Awake,” starring Gina Rodriguez, imagines a world in which a global event wipes out humanity’s ability to sleep. The film is Netflix’s latest foray into the horror genre and premieres on the streamer Wednesday. As the market leaders in the streaming wars, Netflix are expected to deliver the best original content in an effort to maintain their unassailable lead ahead of the competition. And for the most part, they’ve succeeded. This summer in particular proved to be an unqualified win for them, with countless movies earning rave reviews and scoring massive viewership numbers.
The likes of The Old Guard, Project Power, Extraction, Da 5 Bloods, Spenser Confidential, The Devil All the Time, Enola Holmes, The Kissing Booth 2 and Hubie Halloween offered something for everyone, catering to virtually all audiences and demographics from R-rated action to family friendly capers via PG-13 comedies and fluffy romances.
However, one genre that Netflix haven’t yet managed to conquer is horror. The Haunting anthology may be one of the platform’s marquee TV shows, but the original feature film library is somewhat lacking when it comes to genuine scares.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month I’m talking to Carolyn Mauricette, who you probably know from a wide range of outlets.
