Even though it was casually mentioned in the movie that Barney has distant Bulgarian relatives, Barney's family does portray some Bulgarian heritage. For instance, Donka is a Bulgarian name; it being an altered version of the name Anton from Greek origin, meaning an invaluable/incomparable person. Moreover, the picture frames exhibit typical Balkan cultural decorations: like a man in front of the Bulgarian flag, as well as traditional Troyan clay plates among Bulgarian embroidery designs housed in a picture frame. Also, the tripe soup that Barney's father tastes is also accustom to traditional Balkan cuisine, known as "Shkembe chorba" which is actually a Turkish derivative name for tripe soup.
Jack Dylan Grazer first began recording lines for the role of Barney in 2017 when he was 13 and did not finalize his role until early 2021 by the time he was 18. Grazer said that it became difficult to maintain his 13-year-old prepubescent voice throughout the years of recording.
