In 2018, when Kana Akatsuki’s light novel series, Violet Evergarden, finally released its anime adaptation, fans were happy to finally find a new story that shows a new side of the coming-of-age genre through the life of Violet Evergarden, an ex-army soldier who later becomes an auto memories doll to write letters for other people.
Violet Evergarden: The Movie | Kyoto Animation
But the story took a new turn when a sequel movie, Violet Evergarden: The Movie, was released in 2020. The plot of the movie finally brought Violet Evergarden and her former Major Gilbert Bougainvillea together and focused on the romance element between the two characters, which was a nice surprise for fans.
However, Taichi Ishidate, the director of Violet Evergarden and Violet Evergarden: The Movie, did not want to make a sequel film because of the same romantic element, and he had some pretty valid reasons for it.

Violet Evergarden is one of the most mesmerizing anime out there. The animation is above and beyond and the story is something that leaves an impression unlike any other. It is a story of a girl who learns to read her own emotions. Words are always just random scrambled letters if their meaning is unknown. Without semantics, no language would be worth the trouble.
Violet Evergarden | Credit: Kyoto Animation
English is just a jumbled group of words if no one can understand it. In the perspective of language, the world is also an unknown adventure waiting to be understood. Without meaning, it is a place. With meaning, it is a home. That is also the journey Violet takes, understanding the importance of life and why hers holds so much value. Whether reading it in a novel format or watching its anime, Violet Evergarden always has the same impact.

The anime and manga world saw a new narrative unfold when Violet Evergarden was released. The series delivered a unique story, with a special main character who wished to grow, learn, and connect more with the people with the help of her newfound job. However, she soon realizes that all of this is not as easy as it sounds.
A Key Visual for Violet Evergarden | Kyoto Animation
Violet Evergarden follows the story of an ex-army soldier who takes on a job at the Ch Postal Company as an Auto Memories Doll, an individual who helps other people write letters, novels, stories, etc. However, her real intention behind taking this job is to find out the meaning of some words that were said to her by her former Major.
Although the series may focus on the growth of Violet Evergarden as a protagonist, it is not the only aspect covered in the story.

The trial of Fukuta Kishimoto, who confessed to issuing death threats against voice actress Yui Ishikawa, has reached a conclusion with the Tokyo District Court delivering its verdict on Feb 9, 2024.
Some of Yui Ishikawa’s voice acting roles include: Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan, Violet Evergarden in Violet Evergarden, YoRHa No.2 Type B (2B) in Nier: Automata, and others.
The court has sentenced Kishimoto to one year in prison. During the trial, the Tokyo District Court highlighted Kishimoto’s previous conviction for a similar offense, emphasizing his repeated engagement in threatening behaviour that endangered the lives of others.

A man who deliberately set fire to a three-story animation studio in the Japanese city of Kyoto in 2019, killing 36 people, has been sentenced to death for mass murder.
The guilty man, Shinji Aoba, is reported to have held a grudge against Kyoto Animation, which is also known as KyoAni, in the belief it had stolen ideas from novels he submitted to a competition run by the company.
The court found no evidence backing up Aoba’s claims that KyoAni had plagiarized his work.
The 35-year-old studio, created by husband and wife team Yoko and Hideaki Hatta, was known for works such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid and Violet Evergarden.
On July 18, 2019, Aoba entered the studio and started throwing gasoline around the premises, while screaming at the employees.
He then ignited the fire with a lighter and flames quickly engulfed the building.

A Japanese court on Thursday announced the death sentence for Aoba Shinji, the man who burned down the Kyoto Anime studio in 2019 and killed 36 people.
There was little doubt that Aoba, who himself was badly burned in the blaze, was the perpetrator and set the fire using gasoline.
Shortly after the attack, at a press conference, the Kyoto police said that Aoba had unspecified mental health issues. Aoba pleaded not guilty at trial and his defense lawyers argued that he was mentally unfit and could not be held criminally responsible.
The Kyoto District Court, however, said it found that Aoba could determine right and wrong at the time of the incident. His capacity for responsibility was “determined to have been neither insane nor mentally incompetent at the time of the crime,” public broadcaster Nhk reported.
After ruling that Aoba was mentally capable of facing punishment for the crimes, the court...

“Winter was once the only season in the world-but such an existence was too lonely to bear, and so it created Spring to love. Before long, the earth wished for more time to rest in the cycle, and Summer and Autumn were born. The ones who carry the cycle are called the Agents of the Four Seasons. Hinagiku, the Agent of Spring, disappeared from this land ten years ago, taking the season of spring with her. Now, after incredible hardship, she has returned to restore the cycle to its proper state-and, as in the myth passed down since the dawn of time, she sends her love to Winter.” (Yen Press)

I've written before about how horror anime doesn't always work because the medium of animation (except for stop motion) inherently makes it harder to create a feeling of dread and horror. While that is true, it is not the same with melodramas, of which there are many in anime. There are many shows that deliver truly stunning pieces of emotional art that make tears flow like rivers (and I've covered some right here).
Yet there are few anime dramas that are capable of ripping your heartstrings and tying them in knotty messes while also delivering feature film-level quality in TV form quite like "Violet Evergarden," a show that is part tech demo for Kyoto Animation, and part experiment in empathy (seeing how much a show can make the audience cry in...

Stunning visual details, from blooming flowers to morning dew, illustrate our troubled hero’s growth in this bittersweet sequel
The first film completed by Kyoto Animation after the arson attack in 2019, this carries a lot of emotional weight both on and off-screen. Starting out as a “light novel”, Violet Evergarden was later adapted into an anime series; a side story, Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memories Doll, was also made into film, all by Kyoto Animation. The return of Violet Evergarden and a message of overcoming trauma is not only an act of closure for the character but also a moving return for one of Japan’s most beloved animation studios.
A sequel to the anime series, the film quickly recaps Violet Evergarden’s painful origin story. The story takes place in Leidenschaftlich, an imaginary country with old-school western European influences, as evident in the romantic, Victorian flavour of the architecture and costumes.

Japanese police on Wednesday formally charged 42-year-old local man Shinji Aoba with murder relating to the arson attack in July last year at Kyoto Animation.

Japanese police have arrested Shinji Aoba, the man suspected of the arson attack on Kyoyo Animation last July. The arrest came after he was judged sufficiently recovered from his own burn injuries to face scrutiny.
The blaze at the animation production studio killed 36 people and injured another 33.
Aoba was found near the scene and apparently has admitted to setting the fire. “There is no mistake,” the police quoted him as saying. Aoba is said to have accused the studio of stealing his ideas.
In a life-threatening condition for months, Aoba received multiple skin grafts at a hospital in Osaka. He was later sent to a hospital in nearby Kyoto in November for rehabilitation.
Police previously intended to arrest him in January, but he was too ill. He has now been taken to a Kyoto police station for interrogation.

Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” and Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” both flopped in China with dismal $261,000 and $212,000 opening weekends, respectively, according to data from Maoyan.

The poor showing comes just after the Lulu Wang-helmed film won Awkwafina the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy and received a nod in that race for best foreign language film. Its failure to hit home in China recalls the “Crazy Rich Asians” phenomenon in 2018. “Asians” reaped $238 million stateside and was hailed as a milestone for Asian American representation, but grossed just $1.65 million in Mainland China, where many found it overly stereotypical and offensive.

Top animation directors Yasuhiro Takemoto and Futoshi Nishiya were among the talent killed by last month’s arson attack on Kyoto Animation, city police have confirmed.
Revealing the names of 10 of the 35 victims of the fire that ravaged the three-story studio, police also said that veteran animator Yoshiji Kigami was killed.
Takemoto was the top director at the studio, familiarly known as KyoAni, with credits that include the feature animation “Lucky Star.” Nishiya was animation director on the “Free!” TV series, among many other credits. Kigami worked as key animator on the “Free!” series as well as last year’s “Violet Evergarden” series.
All 35 killed have been identified by DNA analysis, but the police are releasing their names in consultation with the bereaved families as they make funeral and other arrangements. A further 33 people were injured in the blaze.
The suspected arsonist, Shinji Aoba, is recovering in the hospital from severe burns.

Data in the server on the first floor of the fire-ravaged Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) studio has been recovered intact, according to Japanese media reports. The recovered data include digitized key animation drawings.
The server was surrounded by four concrete walls that shielded it from fire and water damage. A lawyer for KyoAni, Daisuke Okeda, told the media: “Data recorded on the server has been recovered without loss.” He offered his “heartfelt thanks” to the unnamed specialists who had saved the data.
The deliberately set fire on July 18 ravaged the three-story studio building, killing 35 employees and injuring 33. Their PCs and paper drawings were all destroyed in the blaze.
The already-completed “Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memories Doll,” a spinoff film from the studio’s “Violet Evergarden” franchise, will screen in limited release from Sept. 6 to 26 in Japan.

The arsonist-set fire that swept through the Kyoto Animation studio on July 18 has claimed its 35th life, according to Japanese media reports.
Police have stated that the victim is a man in his twenties. The identities of all 35 dead have yet to be revealed. Another 33 employers of the studio were injured in the blaze, with 10 still hospitalized.
In a related development, police searching the apartment of the 41-year-old suspect Shinji Aoba in the Tokyo suburb of Saitama seized a DVD by Kyoto Animation, together with other items. This is the first concrete evidence of a connection between the suspect and the studio, familiarly known as KyoAni.
Police are also investigating the source of anonymous threatening messages that KyoAni received from the same Internet address between September and November last year. The sender reportedly used the Tor identity-disguising software.

A crowdfunding campaign launched by U.S. animation distributor Sentai Filmworks to assist Kyoto Animation has passed the $2 million mark. The Japanese studio was the victim of an arson attack last Thursday that killed 34 people and injured 34 more.
Among the contributors is software giant Adobe, which anonymously donated $50,000, according to a report on ITmedia News. A spokesman for the company confirmed the donation and said: “Kyoto Animation is a center of the creative community, not only in Japan but worldwide.”
In spite of the horrific attack, Kyoto Animation said in a post on its website that its next feature film, “Violet Evergarden Gaiden” (“gaiden” means “special episode”), is set for a two-week theatrical run in Japan in September. The company asked fans not to bring flowers or gifts to a “Violet Evergarden” orchestral concert scheduled for Saturday in Tokyo, adding that it would also not be accepting donations at the concert.

A deadly fire engulfed the Kyoto Animation studio in a suspected arson attack that killed at least 33 people and injured another 36, Kyoto fire department official Kazuhiro Hayashi told the Associated Press.
Kyoto prefecture police said a man ran into the three-story production facility and sprayed an unidentified liquid that set off the blaze, shouting, “Drop dead,” according to the BBC. The suspect, a 41-year-old man whom police said was not a company employee, is among those injured and recovering in a local hospital.
Video from Nhk News shows plumes of smoke billowing from the three-story building as first responders and firefighters combat the blaze and attend to the injured. Fire officials said about 70 people were in the building when the blaze broke out, the Associated Press reported.
