For happy endings it takes two: music and video

A breakthrough to Starship - previously Jefferson Airplane then Jefferson Starship for a little while - and also to Rebecca De Mornay, gorgeous woman who also had parts in "Trip to Bountiful" and "Runaway Train" all in that same year, 1985. An unforgettable hit song and a nice clip that presents her as the title character who becomes the memory of the lead singer who wonders why they relationship failed and he keeps holding on to those happy moments. A clip with a story that came in the 1980's was always a good thing since it helped viewers to connect themselves with the music and without using of too much artsy bits.

"Sara" appears to be a very positive figure full of energy and happiness, the couple had plenty of good times together, some minor down moments but as the lyrics say right at the end "why did it all fall apart?". In between their moments there's some recollection of the main character childhood memories about a hurricane blowing away everything around him - which to me is an indication of how Sara was exactly like that, someone who came and took everything good from him (nice special effects that sort of like remind me of "The Wizard of Oz" opening). Concept is fine but there isn't much to be said about it. De Mornay steals the show, provides a nice presence; Mickey Thomas' sad expressions are quite convincing and the clip works matching the song with precision. As for cinematic and artistic terms maybe the mystery contained in the song and video are the ones in which we are captivated the most. "Why did it all fall apart?". And the song? It's pure 80's magic, nostalgic and brilliantly composed - the clip has the full version, slightly extended if compared with radio versions that usually tend to cut the intro and part of the end which contains the already mentioned most memorable phrase. Outstanding video, Starship's best in my opinion. 8/10
