In Robert Zemeckis' 1994 film "Forrest Gump," Tom Hanks plays Forrest, a good-hearted but low-intelligence rube who, thanks to impeccably constructed American institutions, stumbles repeatedly into athletic, financial, and military success. Forrest is friendly, strong, and hapless, happy to tell his life story to anyone who sits on the bus bench next to him. Hanks won an Academy Award for playing Forrest, and the film itself won four additional Oscars, including Best Picture. Years later, many had started to reappraise "Forrest Gump" for its treacly tone, its sentimentality, and its unabashed conservative bent. This author was in high school when "Forrest Gump" was released and recalls a teacher sagely pointing out that the title character's "innocence" was only perceived by audiences due to his wealth. Had Forrest's decisions led to financial ruin, his "innocence" would not be positively touted.

To celebrate the release of Dead Water, which is released next week, we sat down with star Casper Van Dien to chat about a different terror at sea.
Van Dien, who made his name in Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers in 1997, talks to us about the classic sci-fi satire that has now become strangely prophetic in 2020. In Dead Water, however, the actor takes on something of a darker role as John Livingstone, a man who takes his ex-marine friend and wife on a cruise until things take a dark turn. Van Dien says he loves the challenges of playing a bad guy, why the film was enticing to him, and how he took his honeymoon during production given the luscious surroundings the film was set.
We, of course, also talked about Starship Troopers and its continued impact on cinema and the world, and how we in the UK get the...

To celebrate the release of Dead Water – available on Digital and DVD 5th October – we are giving away a DVD courtesy of Altitude Film Entertainment.
Dead Water sees a group of friends terrorised by a pirate on their yacht during a pleasure cruise. Unfortunately for the pirate, one of the group happens to be an ex-Marine who is teetering on the edge. It’s triple-crosses and terror (not to mention antique harpoon guns) from that point on, as the boat plunges into deeper water, and an extremely stormy climax.
“It’s gonna be fun!” says Brianne Davis (True Blood), at the start of the film, and it certainly is – but not if you were expecting calm seas. With Starship Troopers’ Casper Van Dien as a likeable, but somewhat shady lead, The Breakfast Club’s Judd Nelson a remarkably shifty bad guy, and The Magnificent Seven’s Griff Furst as a...

"The thing about boats is that there's nowhere to run.." Rlje Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror titled Mary, another boat horror movie this year. This one is made by veteran cinematographer Michael Goi, directing his third feature film. Mary is about a family looking to start a charter-boat business that buys a ship that holds terrifying secrets once out on isolated waters. "It becomes horrifyingly clear that they are being lured to an even greater." Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer star, with a cast including Jennifer Esposito, Stefanie Scott, Owen Teague, Michael Landes, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Natalie Jean. This is super creepy, and feels like a film straight out of the 90s, especially with the grainy look of it. That final shot in the trailer is the scariest. Here's the first official trailer for Michael Goi's Mary, direct from Rlje's YouTube: David (Gary Oldman...

Some low-voltage thrillers are so thoroughly predictable as they meander toward an obvious outcome, they generate far more impatience than suspense. Exhibit A: “Dead Water,” a tepid VOD-ready melodrama that strikes faint echoes of Roman Polanski’s “Knife in the Water” and Phillip Noyce’s “Dead Calm” while ponderously padding 60 or so minutes of plot to feature length. Time and again, you may find yourself thinking, “Come on, come on, let’s get going.” And if you’re in the privacy of your home, well, thoughts may inspire irritably spoken words.
It doesn’t help much that director Chris Helton provides little in the way of distinctive visual stratagems or subtly ominous subtext during the long setup for his tale of a weekend yacht cruise that turns deadly. And it doesn’t help at all that, as the host of the excursion, Casper Van Dien is so transparently sleazy from the get-go,...

"Spooky, isn't it...? Out here, all alone..." Saban Films has revealed the trailer for this indie horror-thriller titled Dead Water, yet another thriller-on-a-boat movie (there seem to be more and more of these boat films these days - see also: Disappearance or Vampyrz on a Boat). When a relaxing getaway turns deadly, a former Marine must risk his life once again to save his wife and best friend from a modern day pirate; all the while trying to hold himself together as he faces the ghosts of the war he left behind. Casper Van Dien (of Starship Troopers fame) stars with Brianne Davis, Griff Furst, and Judd Nelson. This really doesn't look that good, but Casper Van Dien is still awesome - and that shot of him looking pissed is cool. Jump in. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Chris Helton's Dead Water, direct from YouTube: John...
