Divisive is a slightly loaded word. Why would you say it’d be divisive?” wonders Fionn Whitehead, with a furrowed brow. The not-very-online star of Dunkirk hasn’t seen much of the reaction to the BBC’s new adaptation of Great Expectations, in which he plays a steely, glowering Pip. Peaky Blinders showrunner Steven Knight has added spanking, swearing, opium-smoking and references to colonialism to Dickens’s classic coming-of-age tale, and, in the lead-up to tonight’s first episode, the “What the Dickens!” headlines have come thick and fast. “David Copperfield battling zombies or Oliver Twist as a trans teen... what next from the BBC?” asks one pearl-clutcher. Why do I say it might be divisive? Well, I venture... people might have strong feelings. Love. Hate. Not much in the middle. “I hope that’s the case,” he muses, as we talk in the BBC’s offices. “It’s good for people to be challenged.

“Allelujah,” Richard Eyre’s latest film, unfolds in a Yorkshire geriatric hospital, following a group of patients as they make peace with or rage against the indignities of old age. It’s a story that resonates with Eyre, a legendary stage and screen director.
“I’m about to be 80,” he says. “So old age isn’t my consuming passion, but it’s a subject that has been forced on me and that has become difficult to ignore. I’m acutely aware of having outlived both my parents and many of my friends.”
Perhaps unwittingly, “Allelujah,” which premieres this weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival, also serves as a showcase for a generation of English actors such as Judi Dench, David Bradley, and Derek Jacobi, who have all entered their ninth decades.
“I’m not sure I was fully conscious of it it, but what a privilege to have this professional continuity,...

It marks Goslett’s first major television gig, having previously developed projects for FX, the BBC and Channel 4. Other film credits include Robert Pattinson-fronted Little Ashes.
She will also exec produce alongside Jane Espenson, Doug Petrie, Ilene S. Landress, Bernadette Caulfield. Whedon remains credited as creator and exec producer.

Joss Whedon is leaving HBO drama The Nevers.
Whedon was set to co-write and direct the science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the world.
The drama is still set to air in summer 2021. It was handed a straight-to-series order by the premium cable network in summer 2018.
The Nevers was to mark the first TV series for Whedon since he co-created ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the first solely created by him since the cult 2009 Fox drama Dollhouse. Before that he created the hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Firefly, both of which developed a devoted following that remains strong. Buffy also spawned a successful spinoff series, Angel.

When Emma Thompson first read the pilot for the HBO limited series “Years and Years,” which tracks a loving but dysfunctional Manchester family from 2019 to 2034, it read like science fiction. She had no idea that the disturbing digital future depicted by “Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies would so swiftly meet the present.
Before she took on her role as Vivienne Rook, a mediagenic British businesswoman-turned-politician who rises to power as the world goes to shit, “I felt frightened,” she told me from early lockdown in the country home in Scotland she shares with husband Greg Wise, “because of the rise of populist politicians and populism in the world.”
And then came the pandemic. “The crisis has been happening in our world and culture for many years now,” said the environmental activist (Thompson works with Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion), political short maker (“Extinction”) and reader of scary dystopian fiction (“Station Eleven...

We're back with another edition of Horror Highlights! Today's installment gives you a tease of The Howling Wind, the official trailer for The Droving, and details on the recent acquisition of Don't Tell a Soul:
The Howling Wind: "During a plagued dust and wind storm, a countryman takes in a weary traveler seeking refuge — but discovers the truth in the circumstances of his arrival."
"The Howling Wind, at its core, depicts how good people can become monsters when their survival is at stake. In the midst of a natural threat outside, the real terror comes from within. Our vision in crafting The Howling Wind was to utilize the classic style and timeless setting of the early 1960s in order to tell a universal story that although shot in early January, presciently reflects present day events."
The film was directed by Lorian Gish and Justin Knoepfel, written by Justin Knoepfel and stars Anthony Arkin,...

‘Creed II’ (Photo: Warner Bros).
MGM/Warner Bros’ Creed sequel and Universal/Illumination’s The Grinch understandably didn’t pack the punch of their stellar Us debuts in Australian cinemas last weekend – but the former opened far better than the original and the latter is positioned to trade strongly as school holidays approach.
Mks Retail’s science-fiction thriller 2.0. attracted plenty of Bollywood fans but it will need to make a motza given the reported budget of ₹543 crore ($A106 million).
Among the limited releases, Palace’s Normandy Nude and Transmission’s Lean on Pete struggled and Universal’s zany comedy Sorry to Bother You resonated strongly on just four screens.
Louis Theroux admirers turned up for Sharmill Films’ alternate content release Love Without Limits at upscale venues such as Cinema Nova but in lesser numbers at other locations.
The top 20 titles harvested $14.8 million, virtually flat with the previous weekend, according to Numero.

‘Robin Hood.’
Lionsgate’s $100 million Robin Hood reboot is shaping as one of the biggest busts of 2018 while See-Saw Films/Regency Enterprises’ female-led heist movie Widows had a respectable debut on the back of rave reviews.
Among the other openers last weekend, Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms mirrored its weak Us bow while the ethical and legal dilemma at the heart of Roadshow’s The Children Act proved too challenging for mainstream audiences.
Given the lacklustre new entries, takings for the top 20 titles unsurprisingly slumped by 16 per cent to $14.7 million, according to Numero.
Warner Bros’ Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald easily retained the top spot, commanding $4.2 million in its second weekend, elevating its total to $15.8 million.
The David Yates-directed adventure fantasy scripted by J.K. Rowling has hauled in $117 million in the Us and $322.6 million in the rest of the world, for a global total of $439.7 million.

The Children Act and Nanny McPhee actress, Emma Thompson is certainly not short for work in recent years. The British actress has signed up to star in the adaptation of coming-of-age comedy, ‘How To Build A Girl’.
Thompson will be joined by Bridesmaid’s Chris O’Dowd on the cast which also includes Lady Bird’s Beanie Feldstein in the lead, Game of Thrones, Alfie Allen, Journeyman’s Paddy Considine and Bridget Jones’ Baby’s, Sarah Solemani.
Adapted from Caitlin Moran’s novel of the same name, the story is set in 1993 and sees Feldstein play Johanna Morrigan, a smart, opinionated and overweight 16-year-old. She doesn’t turn 60 until next April 15, but Emma Thompson is already embracing her age. "I look my age, and I don't mind that — being old is heaven," the Oscar winner recently said at a fundrasing event in London. "I want to enjoy every minute and use the wisdom I've accrued," Emma — who is currently co-starring with Stanley Tucci in the legal drama The Children Act — recently told Vulture. Her greatest life lesson? "Always remember to bring a jacket!" she exclusively joked to Closer Weekly at a recent TimesTalk Q&A in NYC. But seriously, "just remember you're going to learn a lot more from failing than you are from succeeding, and evaluate it accordingly." Emma and her husband, Greg. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) Emma spoke from her own experience and noted at the London event that, "I had my heart very badly broken by Ken [Branagh]," her first husband. But...

“The Predator” was able to fend off “The Nun” at the domestic box office.
Shane Black’s “The Predator” launched with a tepid $24 million from 4,037 North American locations. That was easily enough to top the weekend box office, but not enough to land a franchise-best debut. That distinction still belongs to 2010’s “Predator” with $24.7 million (not including the two “Alien vs. Predator” crossover films). Overseas, “The Predator” earned $30.7 million for a global start of $54.7 million. It will need to generate big business internationally to justify its $88 million production budget.
Warner Bros.’ “The Nun” dropped to second place, picking up $18 million in its second weekend for a domestic tally of $85 million. It continues to find success abroad, amassing another $33 million this weekend, taking its global total to $228 million. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “A Simple Favor” debuted at No. 3 with $16 million on 3,102 screens. Another new offering, Matthew McConaughey’s “White Boy Rick,” rounded...

If Emma Thompson can’t make “The Children Act,” a drama about a family-court judge conflicted over her own decisions and the precarious state of her own family, into something interesting and meaningful, then no one can. And she can’t.
Screenwriter Ian McEwan, adapting his own novel, and director Richard Eyre (“Notes on a Scandal”) have assembled a fine cast to tackle controversial subjects brimming over with dramatic possibility, but the results are stultifyingly subdued. It’s all so polite, so sober, so convinced of its own importance, that it never has a pulse. This is love and life and death discussed as though they were paint swatches for the guest room.
Thompson stars as Fiona Maye, a high-court judge who specializes in hot-button issues that often put her in the crosshairs of religious fundamentalists. (The “Act” of the title is a noun and not a verb.) As the film opens,...

As Emma Thompson recently put it to Vulture, "I don't think...that I have ever enjoyed being alive as much as I do now." And what a life she's lived already. At 59 years old, the famous dame has dozens of films under her belt, two Academy Awards, countless other honors and the wisdom that only decades of life can bring. Fortunately for the rest of us, the star divulged some of what she's learned in the course of her life during a conversation with Vulture. First stop: relationships. In her latest role in The Children Act, Thompson plays a respected judge whose marriage has been affected by her demanding career. "What we see in the film is the...

Emma Thompson is having quite the year so far. In June, the British actress, 59, acquired the title of capital-d Dame, thanks to Queen Elizabeth.
Then there is her still-thriving career. She joins her “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” co-star Anthony Hopkins in a BBC co-production of Shakespeare’s “King Lear” that will stream on Amazon starting September 28. She plays Goneril, the devious eldest daughter of Hopkins’s tragic royal who takes advantage of his descent into madness.
The double Oscar winner is the main attraction in “The Children Act,” which is now in theaters and is also available on DirecTV. In the drama, based on Ian McEwan’s novel, she plays a British judge who must decide whether a teen boy suffering from leukemia can be forced to get a blood transfusion to save his life — even though it is against his beliefs as a Jehovah’s Witness.

A familiar group of monsters are returning to invade multiplexes this weekend.
Fox’s “The Predator,” the fourth installment in the sci-fi series, looks to top a trio of fellow new offerings — “A Simple Favor,” “White Boy Rick,” and “Unbroken: Path to Redemption” — at the domestic box office. The No. 1 spot, however, could be a close call depending on the staying power of Warner Bros.’ “The Nun,” which led North America last weekend with its sizable debut. Another factor that could impact the weekend box office is Hurricane Florence, the category four storm that is targeting the east coast, specifically the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland. It’s too soon to tell the potential damage, though storm surges and heavy winds could close theaters.
Estimates show Shane Black’s “The Predator” could earn between $25 million and $32 million when it launches in more than 3,900 venues. A debut over $25 million would rank as...

Undercover-cop tale marks Spike Lee’s commercial comeback, while Ian McEwan adaptation The Children Act is dwarfed by box-office giants
Achieving the highest site average for any film on release at UK cinemas is BlacKkKlansman. Spike Lee’s undercover-cop tale – inspired by one Colorado police department’s successful infiltration of the local Ku Klux Klan chapter in the late 1970s – has begun with a very encouraging £1.11m from 217 venues, or £1.23m including previews. Site average for the weekend period is a very robust £5,122.

Adapted from the work of Ian McEwan, Sir Richard Eyre returns to the silver screen with The Children Act, and to mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of meeting the man at the helm, as well as the film’s leading two stars – Emma Thompson and Fionn Whitehead.
We asked Thompson, who plays a high-court judge, on her research into this archaic, elusive world, and she goes on to tell us about the joys in being an actor, constantly understanding new people and worlds. This leads into Whitehead (Dunkirk) talking about getting into the head of a teenager who is willing to sacrifice his life for his religion, and he tells us about secretly joining up to as Jehovah’s Witness meeting. Given the young actor has been very vocal about his admiration for Thompson, we asked her if she can recall working with any true legends...

In The Children Act, the inimitable Emma Thompson stars as a High Court judge caught in the midst of a moral crisis when she is asked to rule over a delicate and highly volatile case. Adapted by Richard Eyre from Ian McEwan’s novel of the same name, the film presents an interesting premise with themes relating to duty versus faith running through its narrative, but is slightly let down by a less than perfect screenplay.
Working tirelessly for years to become one of the brightest and most respected High Court judges in the country, Fiona Maye (Thompson) finds herself at a loss when her husband Jack (Stanley Tucci) suddenly informs her of his intention to have an extra-marital affair with a much younger woman, blaming Fiona for neglecting their sex life for years. When were you happiest?
In my mid- to late-20s, in London, beginning to publish, living hand to mouth, having fun. Also now, when love and life and work have finally cohered.

Actor tells of spending time ‘backstage’ in high court for her role in The Children Act
Emma Thompson has said that spending time at the high court for her latest role in which she plays a family court judge was an extraordinary experience and “one of the greatest privileges”.
The actor plays a judge in The Children Act, an adaptation of Ian McEwan’s 2014 novel, in which her character has to decide whether Adam, a 17-year-old with leukaemia, should be forced to have potentially life-saving blood transfusions despite the procedure going against his religious beliefs as a Jehovah’s Witness.

“Juliet, Naked” charmed the roof off the Eccles Theater at the Sundance Film Festival when it premiered there in January, and no wonder.
Jesse Peretz’s adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel is a lovely low-key comedy with a rock ‘n’ roll heart, with Rose Byrne, Chris O’Dowd and Ethan Hawke delivering a trio of deftly and subtly drawn performances from Hornby’s deep trough of memorable characters.
Hornby’s books have been adapted into the commercial and critical successes “High Fidelity,” “Fever Pitch” and “About a Boy.”

"So you've come to change my mind, My Lady?" A24 has debuted a new official Us trailer for a court drama titled The Children Act, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. We posted the UK trailer for this a few weeks ago, now there's a new Us trailer for another look. The film's title is a reference to a particular law in England: "When a court determines any question with respect to the upbringing of a child, the child's welfare shall be the court's paramount consideration." It stars Emma Thompson as an eminent high court judge, who is asked to rule on the case of Adam, a brilliant young boy who is refusing a life-saving blood transfusion on religious grounds. It's a complex dilemma especially for a judge to rule over. The film's cast includes Fionn Whitehead, Stanley Tucci, Ben Chaplin, Jason Watkins, Rosie Cavaliero, and Nikki Amuka-Bird.
