It is a rare thing when just the studio attached to a movie can get butts in seats, but that is just what Independent Film Company A24 has done since they were formed in 2012. From humble beginnings with the Roman Coppola directed A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III to break out hits like Ex Machine and The Witch. More recently the studio became the first one to ever sweep the top six awards at this past years Oscars when their films Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale took home Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. As their latest film Talk To Me continues to put up impressive numbers at the box office, we wanted to know: What A24 releases has been your favorite? We compiled a pretty comprehensive list, but if you don’t see your favorite listed,...

How do you solve a problem like Chevy Chase? Throughout his lengthy career, the actor has had a long, troubled history of acting like a jerk to nearly everyone he's worked with, from the infamous backstage fight he had with Bill Murray upon leaving Saturday Night Live to his much-publicized feud with showrunner Dan Harmon while co-starring on the beloved NBC sitcom "Community." By many accounts, the star is, at best, annoying to work with, and, at worst, an insufferable jerk.
That behavior would seem to be the end-all, be-all explanation for why Chase's film career eventually floundered despite having a pretty strong start. Yet, like most things, that isn't the whole story: for one, Chase is an incredibly talented actor and comedian, despite his personal shortcomings. For another, his persona being what it is — this is the man who made a splash announcing himself on SNL as "I'm Chevy Chase,...

Exclusive: Malcolm McDowell is saddling up with James Paxton, Bernadette Peters and Laura Marano for Adam Rifkin’s Western Last Train to Fortune.

In the pic, McDowell plays Cecil Peachtree, a stuffed-shirt schoolmaster who misses the last train to Fortune and meets an outlaw named Dooley (Paxton), at which point they strike a deal: The gunslinger will ride the book-loving Cecil to Fortune in exchange for his teacher’s stipend awaiting him. Along the way there are gunfights, jailbreaks and saloon gals, and our mismatched heroes form an unlikely bond. Nicolas Cage is famous for being weird. There are endless video compilations of the bizarre acting choices he has made throughout his extremely prolific career, but an obscure direct-to-video movie from decades ago may hold his strangest appearance ever. Cage is only in a minute-long cameo in the 1989 teen sex comedy "Never on Tuesday," but his prosthetic nose and falsetto voice make it quite the memorable one. That's because for the glorious short time he was on camera, Cage was given free rein to do whatever he pleased.
"Never on Tuesday" marks the directorial debut of Adam Rifkin, who started off in public access television and went on to have an expansive career in making mostly low-budget independent films like the infamous black comedy "The Dark Backward" and the Burt Reynolds swan song "The Last Movie Star." The film follows the pursuits of two dudes trying to win the romance...

While she’s annoyed for much of the season by the presence on the property of the sex worker Lucia (Simona Tabasco) and her aspiring singer friend Mia (Beatrice Grannò), she winds up sharing her vulnerability and a life-changing moment of physical intimacy with the latter. Mia is then able to realize a personal dream, as she’s granted the opportunity to perform for hotel guests.

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

It was an intimate cocktail party. Tom Cruise wore a cheerful smile so I couldn’t resist the opportunity to test it. “For someone who’s just been fired, you look very happy,” I said. “Sumner Redstone figured you would be angry by the press release.”
“I’m not really fire-able, if that’s even a word,” Cruise replied, his smile intact. “Besides, prods from CEOs never anger me.”
The media briefly fed on the studio press release, but as it turned out, Redstone and Paramount went into retreat mode within a week. Paramount’s long-standing deal with Cruise’s production company had elapsed a month earlier, but the CEO forgot to check his facts before issuing his statement, so Cruise looked smart in ignoring the Hollywood rhetoric (details below).

Georgia Brown, Amazon Studio’s Director of European Originals, said that audiences have been increasingly turning to feature films on their service in the last few years and expressed plans for the company to beef up its film slate. Speaking in the penultimate conversation at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Thursday, the exec also touched on the importance of investing in local language talent as well as its plans to implement some “robust” diversity strategies.
“I think what has worked really well for us, broadly, is movies, interestingly,” she said. “We were aware of this and we were aware that audiences wanted movies, and my original remit wasn’t to include movies, it was television series that we were looking at. But we started to realize that audiences, they come in and they give us this precious time for these big series – they give us six, seven, eight, nine, ten...

Exclusive: Ariel Winter (Modern Family) and Mason Gooding (Booksmart) have joined the cast of the indie feature Pools, which begins production in Chicago later this month.
They’ll star opposite previously announced cast members Odessa A’zion (Grand Army), Michael Vlamis and Tyler Alvarez (American Vandal).
Written and directed by Sam Hayes, Pools follows Kennedy (A’zion), who is stuck at summer school after flunking her sophomore year of college. Amidst a heat wave, she rallies a ragtag crew for a pool-hopping adventure through the wealthy estates of Lake Forest, on the north shore of Chicago. But as the secrets spill, a wild night of fun becomes a cathartic journey of self-discovery.
Winter will play Delaney, who is one to stir the pot, and becomes the focal point of a love triangle. The character plays tough and always knows how to win, but she really just wants her best friend back.

Exclusive: Veteran manager/producer Brad Kaplan has joined Link Entertainment as a partner. Kaplan, who comes from Primary Wave Entertainment, will work out of Link’s West L.A. offices which were expanded last month in part to make room for the company’s growing literary department.
“We have had the privilege to work with Brad in the past and he has been a friend for over 15 years,” the Link partners said in a statement. “He is one of the smartest and most genuine people we have had the pleasure to collaborate with. As we expand our literary/production division, we couldn’t ask for a better partner. We have always admired Brad’s incredible taste in both clients and material”.
Kaplan started his career at Silver Pictures where he worked as a production executive and worked on such films as Lethal Weapon 4, Conspiracy Theory, Executive Decision and The Matrix.

Some were launched with mega-hype, only to wind up branded as financial disappointments. Others were indie-produced Cinderellas that got lost on their way to the ball. And one was a legendary film maudit that appears well on its way to becoming a footnote.

Chicago – The Bandit. Gator. The Man Who Loved Women. Jack Horner. Burt Reynolds played all these roles, in a roller coaster career that encompassed three eras of film and television. Reynolds died last month at age 82, taking with him a different breed of movie star, one that stole a scene with a self assured wink, mischievous smile and high pitched laugh.
Burt’s on-screen career began in 1958, and he had the distinction of being a regular on a hit TV show (“Gunsmoke”) in the 1960s, a movie star in the 1970s (“Smokey and the Bandit”) and ‘80s, and then back to TV (winning an Emmy for “Evening Shade), before getting his only Oscar nomination for “Boogie Nights.” His later career was notable for essentially being Burt Reynolds, as his second generation fans went on to produce shows like “Archer,” where Burt voices himself as Burt, and despite being named a...

Burt Reynolds was honored on Wednesday morning at a memorial service in West Palm Beach, Florida, People confirms. The actor died earlier this month at the age of 82.
Friends and family of the late actor were in attendance to pay their respects including Judge Reinhold, Vanilla Ice and Broadway actress Avery Sommers.
The service was an hour long, with a private funeral scheduled for Thursday for close family members of Reynolds.
A source tells People that after the small service, attendees went to the tavern, E.R. Bradley’s Saloon, nearby.

I finished the script for The Last Movie Star [2018] and called Burt's manager. I said, "Please send this to Burt and tell him we have no money and that if he doesn't want to do it, I'm not making it, because I only wrote it for him." The next day I get a call from Burt Reynolds. It blew my mind. One reason I wrote the movie was that growing up, Burt Reynolds was my hero. So when I heard his voice on the phone, my jaw hit the floor.

To Ariel Winter, Burt Reynolds truly was the last movie star.
The 20-year-old actress reflected on her time working with the late Hollywood legend in a moving Instagram she posted on Thursday evening, hours after Reynolds died at the age of 82.
Winter shared several pictures of herself and Reynolds from their 2017 film The Last Movie Star, about a retired A-list actor wrestling with his “has-been” status. In the photos, the stars laugh and pose together both on and off set. Winter’s boyfriend, Levi Meaden, even made it into one of the shots.

Alongside Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds was the last movie star to bridge the gap between Hollywood’s old school and the Brat Pack-led, Multiplex blockbuster world we still live in today. A TV veteran from the late fifties, Reynolds used his trademark twinklin’ eyes, infectious chuckle, some audacious choices and some good ‘ol Southern charm to become a household name. Between 1978 and 1982, he was bar none, the biggest movie star in the world.
Somehow, despite overwhelming good will from an appreciative audience, Reynolds had a devil at the wheel and over his fifty year-plus career he had a bewildering tendency to shoot out his own tyres, to continue an appropriate racing car metaphor.

Jupiter, Fla – When I met Burt Reynolds in 2011, I knew I was meeting Hollywood royalty… he filled the room as a Movie Star King. He was frail at that time, complaining of the injuries he endured in the over 90 films in his career, but nothing stopped his stardom until it was over. Reynolds died on September 6th, 2018. He was 82.
Burt was age 75 at our meeting, and he still had that the charm bearing that audiences adored in his heyday in the 1970s and early ‘80s, when he was the King of the Box Office. He started in 1950s TV, bounced around in that and B-movies in the ‘60s, and found his niche as a humor-motivated “good old boy” in a series of films in the ‘70s, culminating with “Smokey and the Bandit” in 1977, his most memorable hit. In just a couple of weeks, Burt Reynolds was slated to go in front of the camera of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. Reynolds, who died suddenly today of a suspected heart attack, was to play rancher George Spahn in the movie, set in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969 before the Manson Family murders were committed.
Reynolds, who was cast back in May and attended the Leonardo DiCaprio- and Brad Pitt-starring film’s table read in June, had received a straight offer from Tarantino, who had seen Reynolds in the 2018 release The Last Movie Star.
That feature, in which Reynolds played an aging movie star, created a host of new opportunities for the 1970s movie icon. (You can read The Last Movie Star writer-director Adam Rifkin’s remembrance of his friend and childhood hero Reynolds here.)

Burt Reynolds, who died today in Florida at age 82, had several resurgences in an acting career that included him becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars twice, first as a leading man in some of the 1970s’ best films, then returning to the top of the marquees when he was nominated for an Oscar for the first and only time, in 1998, for playing porn director Jack Horner in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights.
Along the way, he went from the likes of Riverboat and Gunsmoke on TV to the swashbuckling star of the likes of Deliverance, Smokey and the Bandit, The Longest Yard, Hooper and later The Cannonball Run. His non-big-screen choices were always interesting, too, from starring on CBS’ hit Evening Shade to unmistakable voice work on everything from Archer to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Exclusive: Adam Rifkin wrote and directed The Last Movie Star, the 2018 release starring Burt Reynolds, who died Thursday at 82. The iconic actor played an aging screen hero who is talked into attending a local film festival that plans to give him a career achievement award. The event turns out to be “run” by a pair of starstruck local dudes. Here is Rifkin’s first-person remembrance of the real-life screen legend.
I am utterly heartbroken by the news of Burt Reynolds’ passing. This one hits hard. Really hard. They don’t loom larger than The Bandit. And Hollywood doesn’t make movie stars like Burt Reynolds anymore. The world has lost a genuine legend today, but I also lost a friend.
Growing up in Chicago, Burt was my childhood hero. He was the coolest and the funniest, and he never took himself seriously. That self-deprecating sense of humor was what made him so likable.

Burt Reynolds, one of the great movie stars of the ’70s and a massive sex symbol on screen, has died. Reynolds flashed his charisma and his testosterone in largely blockbusters and action films, but he always demonstrated dramatic range and energy even late into his career. Here are some of the actor’s most iconic and memorable movie and TV roles.
Gunsmoke
Reynolds hopped around TV for several years before landing a recurring part on the long-running Western “Gunsmoke.” For three years and 50 episodes he played Quint, a part Native American man who in this scene flips a guy onto a barroom table after he’s called a “dirty half-breed.”
Deliverance
In John Boorman’s classic about a group of men in a perilous fight against nature, Reynolds plays the domineering alpha male, open leather vest, crossbow and all. But the film grapples with themes of masculinity and how being...

Legendary actor Burt Reynolds, best known for films such as Deliverance, The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit, The Cannonball Run, Boogie Nights and a ton of other films has passed away. He was 82-years-old. Reynolds was a very colorful actor who was charming as hell in the roles he played on the big screen.
Reynolds was never really taken seriously by film critics because of the films he made, but according to the actor, he was more interested in making fun movies that allowed him to have a good time instead of taking more serious roles. He said this in his 2015 memoir, But Enough About Me:
"I didn't open myself to new writers or risky parts because I wasn't interested in challenging myself as an actor. I was interested in having a good time. As a result, I missed a lot of opportunities to show I could play serious roles.

The first trailer has been released for an extremely weird looking film called Director's Cut, which stars Penn Jillette as a crazy Hollywood-obsessed who stalks and kidnaps his favorite actress. Not only does Jillette star in the film, but he also wrote it and it just looks completely bat-shit crazy. The movie was directed by Adam Rifkin and this is what he had to say about the plot:
"Director’s Cut is a movie about a film-obsessed stalker who is played by Penn Jillette and is fixated on his favorite actress, Missi Pyle. He gains access to the set of her current film by contributing to that movie’s crowdfunding campaign. Once on set, he kidnaps her, steals all of the footage from the film, and, in his dungeon-movie studio, he films additional scenes of the movie, casting himself opposite his captive leading lady as the romantic hero. In the 1970s, Burt Reynolds was arguably the biggest movie star in the world. He had made his name through television, appearing as a regular for 50 episodes on the hit series “Gunsmoke,” then headlining his own series, “Hawk” and “Dan August.” But then Reynolds got his big break in feature films, co-starring in the John Boorman classic “Deliverance” (1972).
Though Reynolds was soon starring in such box-office hits as “The Longest Yard” and “Smokey and the Bandit,” he never abandoned television, utilizing such talk shows as “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” (where he was one of the funniest guests ever) to hone his image, strutting on as a sex symbol and then acting like an utter goofball once he sat the guest’s chair. The contrast between the Cosmopolitan centerfold and the delightful talk show guest endeared Reynolds to moviegoers.
