Warning: this Doctor Who review contains plot spoilers.
To use some technical musical terminology – this one’s a banger.
Like most fans, I was very intrigued when I heard that Russell T Davies would be returning as showrunner. Having decisively brought Doctor Who into the 21st century, remade it in his own image and delivered a bona fide cultural phenomenon, Davies had subsequently gone on to make several other successful shows. It’s not like he needed to come back. He had nothing to prove. So it seemed safe to assume that if he was going return, it was because he had new ideas, new things he wanted to say, new experiments he was hungry to try out.
That was an exciting prospect. The Tennant specials had swagger, but they were something of a victory lap – comfortable 60th anniversary reunions tying up loose ends, though obviously not without surprises. Then...

‘After the Party’ in the U.K.
Channel 4 has acquired U.K. rights to the acclaimed New Zealand drama “After the Party” from Lingo Pictures.
The six-part series, co-created by and starring Robyn Malcolm (“Black Bird”), follows Penny Wilding, a mother, teacher and environmental activist, whose life imploded five years earlier after she accused her husband Phil, played by Peter Mullan, of a sex crime and nobody believed her.
When Penny’s now ex-husband returns to town, her daughter pressures her to let go of her accusations and move on. As her old furies rise to the surface, Penny must decide what’s more important – the truth or rebuilding her relationships with the people around her.
Co-created by Dianne Taylor, “After the Party” was produced by Australia’s Lingo Pictures and Luminous Beast in New Zealand as an original commission for New Zealand’s Tvnz in association with and distributed by ITV Studios.

Ahead of filming Peacock‘s The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip, Brandi Glanville shed more light on her reaction to Alex McCord’s post about her.
McCord, who starred on The Real Housewives of New York City Seasons 1 through 4 posted about Glanville ahead of filming and it seemingly got under Glanville’s skin.
“Calling all [Housewives] stans! I’m heading off to Rhugt a bit blind since I’ve been away for 12 years. So I’m asking your advice on these fabulous ladies in alphabetical order over the next week. Today is Brandi Glanville Day! What are your favorite Brandi moments?” she wrote on Instagram.
Glanville seemed annoyed and tweeted, “This b**** ever heard of [YouTube]????? I hope this post got her a few new followers.”
Of course, now Glanville realized that McCord was asking followers for comments on all the Rhugt Season 3 cast members. But it still seemed thirsty to her.

Since The Crown launched on Netflix in 2016, it’s become a monumental hit, including being the first show to win all seven major drama category awards during the 2021 Emmys. And now it’s back for its fifth, and penultimate, series.
There’s a particular buzz around this latest season of this fictional dramatisation of the life of Queen Elizabeth II: not only is there a major cast change for the second time, it will also be the first time a new series airs since the deaths of Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip.
Season five will cover the 1990s, arguably one of the royal family’s most difficult decades. They endured a major fire at Windsor Castle, the messy public breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage, and the leadup to the tragedy of Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris.

Netflix’s The Crown, poised to drop Season 5 on November 6, is irrefutable proof of America’s continuing fascination with England’s royal family. The series opens with Elizabeth’s wedding to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947 and Season 4 wraps with the resignation of longtime Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Along the way, the series, created and principally written by Peter Morgan, delivers all the insider drama and palace intrigue one would expect in a drama about the royals. The series is produced for Netflix by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television.
Reinforcing its popularity, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, the show’s first two seasons bounced back into Netflix’s Top 10 shows, according to the streaming service.

San Francisco, Aug 17 (Ians) Google’s parent company Alphabet is bringing together two of its most ambitious research projects — robotics and AI language understanding — to make a “helper robot” that can understand natural language commands.
According to The Verge, since 2019, Alphabet has been developing robots that can carry out simple tasks like fetching drinks and cleaning surfaces.
This Everyday Robots project is still in its infancy — the robots are slow and hesitant — but the bots have now been given an upgrade: improved language understanding courtesy of Google’s large language model (Llm) PaLM.
Most robots only respond to short and simple instructions, like “bring me a bottle of water”. But LLMs like Gpt-3 and Google’s MuM can better parse the intent behind more oblique commands.
In Google’s example, you might tell one of the Everyday Robots prototypes, “I spilled my drink, can you help?” The robot filters this...

Julie Walters (National Treasure) and Clarke Peters (The Wire) are fronting a dark, irreverent drama based around a death pact for broadcaster Channel 4.
They will star in Clerkenwell Films’ six-part Truelove, which is written by from Iain Weatherby (Humans) and co-created with Charlie Covell. She wrote the tonally similar Channel 4 and Netflix drama The End Of The F***ing World — another Clerkenwell production.
With a core cast in their 60s and 70s, Channel 4 says the series “breaks the rules for older characters on screen and flips ageist tropes on their head in a series which promises thrilling twists and turns, irreverent humour and passionate romance.”
Walter will play Phil, an ex-senior police chief enjoying a comfortable if boring retirement, and Peters plays Ken, a divorcee and ex-special forces vet who feels similarly at sea. The pair are childhood sweetheart who never quite managed to forget each other.

His Dark Materials and Help writer Jack Thorne has been recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Writing at tonight’s 29th Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards (WGGBAs), with Russell T Davies, Emerald Fennell and Armando Iannucci also taking home gongs.
The prolific Thorne, who delivered this year’s Edinburgh Television Festival MacTaggart lecture, was presented with the prestigious trophy by His Dark Materials exec and Bad Wolf Co-Founder Jane Tranter, following a two-decades-long career in which he has penned some of the UK’s most critically-acclaimed hits including This is England, Shameless and The Virtues.
“I think all writers would say that being given something from other writers is the greatest honor,” said Thorne. “I don’t think I’ve really contributed anything much in this strange career, and writing is a really strange job, but I’m grateful, and slightly anxious, to now have this award to live up to.

Kenton Allen, CEO of London-based outfit Big Talk Productions, has plenty to be pleased about. For the next two weeks, the company he has headed for over a decade will be dominating the Monday night primetime slot on BBC One in the U.K. First, at 8:30 p.m., with “The Goes Wrong Show,” and then at 9 p.m. with “The Outlaws,” about a group of small-time convicts completing community service together and which stars Christopher Walken in his first British television role.
“That doesn’t happen every day,” Allen tells Variety. “That’s quite a big thing for us to have an hour and a half of primetime on the nation’s biggest Psb.”
Allen is ostensibly here to talk about “The Outlaws,” which is written by and stars Stephen Merchant (“Jojo Rabbit”) alongside Walken and “Poldark’s” Eleanor Tomlinson, but in a wide-ranging conversation is happy to discuss everything from the U.

Big Talk Productions CEO Kenton Allen is typically straight when reflecting on 2020. “A disaster,” he says, surveying the economic wreckage of Covid-19 over a Zoom call from his home in London last month. Like countless others, the pandemic has blown a huge hole in Big Talk’s earnings and created unthinkable headaches for the company, which should have been celebrating a very healthy 12 months. But Allen, a gruff optimist, is celebrating the wins of the coronavirus crisis, rather than wallowing in what went wrong.
For starters, Big Talk managed to convince the BBC and Amazon to commission a second season of Stephen Merchant comedy-drama The Offenders before the first had even been shot. Known for comedy hits including Rev and Mum, the production firm also finally wrapped a second season of Channel 4/Sundance Now’s Back after a bewildering run of setbacks, both Covid and non-Covid-related. Lesley Manville has been cast as Princess Margaret for the Imelda Staunton-led fifth and final season of “The Crown,” Netflix revealed Thursday.
The Oscar-nominated actress will be taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth II’s sister from Helena Bonham Carter, who is portraying the royal on Seasons 3 and 4. Bonham Carter replaced Vanessa Kirby, the actress who played Princess Margaret for “The Crown’s” first two seasons.

Exclusive: Mum producer Big Talk and Ray Donovan writer Sean Conway are to adapt Tade Thompson’s African noir novel Making Wolf for television.
The ITV-owned producer and the British writer are working on a drama adaptation of the book, which will be published by Constable in paperback in May 2020.
The book, from Rosewater author Thompson, tells the story of Weston Kogi, a London security guard, who returns to his West African home country and thinks telling people he works as a homicide detective is harmless hyperbole. However, he is kidnapped and forced by two separate rebel factions to investigate the murder of a local hero, Papa Busi. Solving the crime may tip a country on the brink into civil war and cost Weston his life.
Conway is to write the adaptation of the darkly comic, Kafkaesque story. He wrote all six episodes of Chloe Sevigny-fronted Sky drama Hit & Miss,...
