The Eighties takes a dark, yet riveting turn
I'm kinda surprised that 'The Fight Against AIDS' comes so soon after the series' Reagan high. Between the man's lack of response to the epidemic and his administration's undermining of the Surgeon-General, this is no Reagan puff piece. But it does clarify the fear felt by, well pretty much everyone leading up to the discovery of the disease. I'm sure any millennial watching this would be taken aback by the fervent moralizing and homophobia back then. It's peculiar that it took a dying Rock Hudson to finally raise awareness, but utterly heartbreaking that a child had to become a symbol for determination to beat the infection. It nothing else, he proved it wasn't the gay disease.
