Loving Adam Sandler means making your peace with the actor's wildly inconsistent output. It's not like The Sandman has ever been a critical darling; even during his rise to superstardom in the '90s, "Happy Gilmore" and "The Wedding Singer" were the only movies of his that you could reasonably call well-reviewed (and that's coming from an ardent "Billy Madison" defender). But the films that he's churned out under his Happy Madison Productions, which was founded in 1999, have been all over the place quality-wise. Even most die-hard Sandlites probably wouldn't go to the mattresses over stinkers like "Jack and Jill" and "Grown Ups 2."
That's only become doubly true since Sandler entered his alliance with Netflix in the 2010s. Sometimes, you end up with little more than "content" for viewers to stream and immediately forget, but you can also get remarkably good stuff like "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected...

A fun ensemble join Adam Sandler and George Clooney for Noah Baumbach’s latest film for Netflix, Jay Kelly.
——
At the back end of last year, we covered the story that hot off the success of co-writing 2023’s highest-grossing film, Barbie. Noah Baumbach was returning to Netflix to make another movie.
The director of Frances Ha and The Squid And The Whale has made Netflix his home over the past few years, releasing his last four films exclusively on the streaming platform.
When the film was initially announced, we learned that Adam Sandler would be once again working with Baumbach following their collaboration on 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories. That film marked the beginning of Baumbach’s relationship with Netflix and the director has since gone on to release Marriage Story and White Noise on the platform.

For a time, it seemed like an auteur war was about to break out over Adam Sandler, with some of America’s most revered directors vying to find the right role for the comedian. It was rumored, but never confirmed, that Quentin Tarantino imagined him a key role while writing Inglourious Basterds, although this might have been wishful thinking from critics who saw the talented Sandler heading in the same direction as John Travolta until Pulp Fiction saved him from a lifetime of Look Who’s Talking movies. In the end, Paul Thomas Anderson got there first, with Punch Drunk Love (2002), although the glow of a bona fide arthouse hit didn’t last long, and Jack and Jill still happened less than ten years later.
Nevertheless, though he returned to the fanbase, Sandler has always been good in serious supporting roles, even in films that don’t broadly work, like...

Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux wants director David Fincher’s work back in cinemas rather than on Netflix – and he doesn’t mince his words about it.
We all know that Netlfix isn’t exactly beloved at Cannes. The streaming platform hasn’t been welcome at the prestigious French film festival since 2017 and even then, the films that it debuted (Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories) are said to have opened to boos. For Cannes boss, Thierry Fremaux, it’s a source of continued dismay that auteur filmmaker David Fincher continues to ply his trade exclusively for the Silicon Valley studio.
Fincher has recently signed an extension to his deal with Netflix which will see him work exclusively (we think) for the company for another three years. That doesn’t sit well with Fremaux, who wants to see Fincher back on cinema screens and back at Cannes.

“My role is to sometimes talk to the press or to fight with policemen,” Cannes Delegate General Thierry Fremaux joked during a keynote this evening at the Göteborg Film Festival.
Fremaux had been making a comedic reference to his altercation with a local police officer on the pavement outside the Carlton Hotel at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The altercation — which went viral — was just one of the topics Fremaux touched on this evening in Göteborg during a keynote session with Swedish filmmaker and two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund.
Concluding the description of his unique job title, Fremaux added: “We are really at the service of the artist, the press, the audience and the professionals. If those roles are well done, we are happy.”

The Academy picked the right year to give an Honorary Oscar to film editor Carol Littleton. They’re saluting a female editor at a time when three of the year’s major awards contenders —“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Maestro” — are edited by Thelma Schoonmaker, Jennifer Lame and Michelle Tesoro, respectively, and when other women in the mix include Hilda Rasula for “American Fiction,” Victoria Boydell for “Saltburn,” Sarah Flack for “Priscilla” and co-editors Claire Simpson (with Sam Restivo) for “Napoleon” and Oona Flaherty (with Nick Moore) for “Are You There, God? When Paul Thomas Anderson went against the industry grain and cast Adam Sandler as the lead in his fourth feature, "Punch Drunk Love," many people in Hollywood felt the brashly talented filmmaker's ego had inflated to Welles-ian proportions. After the dazzling excess of "Magnolia" (which was more divisive at the time than it is now), there was a sense that he was provoking for provocation's sake. Outside of Steven Seagal, it's possible there wasn't a more critically loathed star in America — and it wasn't just the movies they hated. They detested him. They considered him a charisma vacuum who needed someone as irresistibly lovable as Drew Barrymore to render his presence in a film tolerable.
Anderson shattered these misconceptions. Though Sandler didn't dive headlong into dramas after "Punch Drunk Love," he'd take on a non-comedic part every few years and remind us of his untapped potential — which he fully realized...

Baumbach’s career with Netflix consists of three features in addition to Marriage Story, including White Noise and The Meyerowitz Stories, starring Adam Sandler.
Baumbach is now tapped to helm his fourth project with the streamer. He’ll be reuniting with Sandler and pairing him with George Clooney for the new project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The details for the movie’s plot has yet to be revealed, but Baumbach is also on board as a producer on the movie. He will be joined by Sony’s Amy Pascal and David Heyman as producers. Heyman had also worked with Baumbach on Marriage Story and also produced Barbie.

Noah Baumbach has found the stars of his new feature film: Adam Sandler and George Clooney. The plot details for the Netflix project are being kept under wraps.
Baumbach will also produce the film, alongside Amy Pascal and David Heyman, who worked with Baumbach on Marriage Story and also produced Barbie, which the filmmaker co-wrote with Greta Gerwig.
This will be Baumbach’s fourth feature for Netflix, following White Noise, Marriage Story and The Meyerowitz Stories, which starred Sandler.
Sandler, repped by WME, was last seen in Netflix comedies You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and Murder Mystery 2. He recently released the animated feature Leo on the streaming service.
Clooney, who will work with Baumbach as a director for the first time on the project, will have his latest directorial effort, The Boys in the Boat, in theaters Christmas day. He is repped by CAA.

George Clooney and Adam Sandler will team up in a new Noah Baumbach movie for Netflix that’s still untitled, Variety has confirmed.
Baumbach co-wrote the script with actor Emily Mortimer, who also created the series “Doll and Em.” Baumbach is producing with Amy Pascal and David Heyman.
Under his exclusive deal with Netflix, Baumbach has already made “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected),” in which Sandler also starred, as well as the best picture nominee “Marriage Story,” with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, and “White Noise,” adapted from the Don DeLillo novel and starring Drive and Greta Gerwig.
Clooney most recently directed “The Boys in the Boat,” which bows in theaters on Dec. 25, starring Joel Edgerton and Calum Turner. He’ll star with Brad Pitt and Amy Adams in Apple’s “Wolfs,” which is planned for a 2024 release with Jon Watts directing.

Greta Gerwig, whose latest movie “Barbie” grossed $1.4 billion at the global box office this year and just picked up nine Golden Globe nominations, will preside over the jury of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Gerwig has attended Cannes alongside her partner Noah Baumbach before, notably in 2017 when his “The Meyerowitz Stories” premiered, but she’s never presented a film there. There were early talks to bring “Barbie” to Cannes earlier this year but the timing didn’t work. The Warner Bros. movie was released on July 19 and became an instant classic and the highest-grossing worldwide movie of the year. On top of leading the Golden Globe nominations, “Barbie” is also expected to land numerous Oscar nominations, with Variety’s Clayton Davis saying the film is a rare blockbuster with a shot at winning best picture.
“I love films – I love making them, I love going to them, I love talking about them.

Helen Hunt and Dustin Hoffman are leading the cast for Peter Greenaway’s new movie: more on it here.
We haven’t seen too much of Dustin Hoffman since his excellent turn in Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories which was a Netflix must-watch movie back in 2017 when it released.
He’s been up to stuff, and Hoffman has made a couple of smaller indie films in the years since but he’s about to step back into the spotlight, not least because he is set to appear in Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola’s high-profile return to filmmaking that we imagine will be releasing next year.
It has also been announced that Hoffman will be working with the British filmmaker Peter Greenaway, whose artsy projects don’t usually feature Hollywood icons in them.
Fellow Oscar-winner Helen Hunt has also joined the cast of Lucca Mortis which according to Variety has...

Of all the actors to get caught up in the #MeToo movement, perhaps one of the most surprising was Dustin Hoffman. Back in 2017, when the actor was fresh off of delivering one of his finest latter-day performances in The Meyerowitz Stories, the actor was confronted (some say ambushed) at a 20th-anniversary screening of Wag the Dog by comedian John Oliver, who questioned him about accusations of inappropriate behaviour from thirty years prior on the set of Death of a Salesman. The story went viral, and soon a story about Hoffman’s treatment of Meryl Streep on the set of Kramer vs Kramer also got renewed play, much to Streep’s dismay, who said Hoffman had apologized years earlier, and she accepted that.
In the years since, Hoffman’s career has been low-key, with him only showing up in a few indie and international films, which is a significant comedown for...

Since 1989, Adam Sandler has been one of the busiest men in Hollywood. Not only is he a prolific funnyman on screen, but he's also got his own production company, Happy Madison, that has cranked out over 25 feature films. Sandler inked a lucrative exclusivity deal with Netflix a few years back and has been churning out films for them to varying degrees of success.
Sure, Sandler has made some sophomoric films, and many include questionable casting choices/characterizations that don't hold up in our contemporary culture (like every role Rob Schneider has ever played), but he's also been unfairly used as a punching bag by snobbish cinephiles despite the overwhelming evidence that he's a comedic genius. When he won Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards following his egregious Oscars snub for "Uncut Gems," his acceptance speech included the now-viral line, "I'd also like to give a shout-out to my fellow nominees,...

Adam Sandler has a new all-time best-reviewed movie.
The actor-comedian’s latest Netflix title, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, has managed to draw a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than any of his previous films across 34 years of making movies.
The teen comedy — which began streaming Friday — has a 96 percent “Fresh” score on the site.
That just edges out 2022’s Hustle (93 percent), 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories (92 percent) and 2019’s Uncut Gems (91 percent). Having said that, there’s always the possibility that additional negative reviews for Bat Mitzvah could alter the standings later in the week.
Sandler has a relatively minor role in the Bat Mitzvah, but he produced the film and it stars his teenage daughters, Sunny and Sadie, with Sandler playing their father.
The Hollywood Reporter’s was among the rave reviews, saying “the rampant nepotism on display has resulted in a sweet, amusing film geared toward younger audiences,...

Throughout Adam Sandler's deeply wide-ranging career, the talented actor has delivered some pretty wild performances that have ping-ponged from one extreme to the other. After his run through the '90s and early aughts included hits like "Happy Gilmore," "The Wedding Singer," and especially "Punch-Drunk Love," he more or less lapsed into autopilot mode with several undemanding comedies before roaring back to life with "Sandy Wexler," "The Meyerowitz Stories," and "Uncut Gems." Well, now audiences are about to see Sandler as they never have before: as a lizard.
Netflix's "Leo" might seem like yet another unrefined streaming comedy aimed at the lowest common denominator, but the premise of Sandler voicing an aged class pet who's suffered through countless boring and monotonous school years performing for the amusement of obnoxious kids kind of sounds ... intriguing! After years of churning out his tried-and-true brand of juvenile comedies for Netflix, Adam Sandler has started to mix things up a little in his recent collaborations with the streamer. Their "Murder Mystery" films, for example, might not be anything exceptional, but it's fun to see The Sandman getting bitten by the same cozy murder-mystery bug that's been making the rounds of late. His basketball dramedy "Hustle," itself a perfectly likable by-the-numbers underdog sports flick, even served to bridge the gap a little between Sandler's guffawfests and high art offerings.
His latest Netflix original film, "You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah," looks to keep that welcome trend going. In what's a bonafide family affair, Sandler stars opposite his real-life daughters Sadie and Sunny, with his wife, Jacqueline "Jackie" Sandler (née Titone), also co-starring, although the role of his onscreen wife is being filled by Idina Menzel (who...

“Bucky F*cking Dent,” the second movie written and directed by David Duchovny, is based on a novel by Duchovny that was published in 2016, and whether or not the story is autobiographical, it feels autobiographical, and I mean that as a compliment. Set in the summer of 1978, it’s framed around one man’s obsession with the Boston Red Sox — meaning, of course, the curse of the Bambino, going back to 1918, the last time (until 2004) the Sox won the championship.
The man is Ted Fulilove, which is a terrible last name for a movie character, though he’s played by Duchovny as a cussed crab apple with an amusing misanthropic put-down for every occasion (like: “Closure’s for morons”). “Bucky F*cking Dent” has a handful of characters, but it’s essentially a father-son two-hander — one of those dramadies in which the dad is a heartless-on-the-surface coot who was no good when...

Exclusive: Marriage Story filmmaker Noah Baumbach has set his next project, but it’s not for the screen.
We understand the writer-director is working on his first book, a memoir, which is currently untitled, and has been snapped up in what we hear was a highly competitive auction.
Knopf has taken North American rights. Jordan Pavlin, Knopf SVP and Editor-in-Chief acquired the book from Byrd Leavall and Albert Lee at United Talent Agency. Knopf will publish the book in hardcover, e-book, and in audio by Penguin Random House. UK Commonwealth rights were sold by Sophie Lambert of C&w on behalf of Byrd Leavell and Albert Lee, and acquired, at auction, by Jocasta Hamilton Publisher at John Murray.
Specific details about the book are being kept under wraps, but we understand the work will, in some way, chart the Barbie co-scribe’s life and career through key experiences and his relationship with cinema.

I can’t imagine anyone holds high expectations for the results of Adam Sandler’s $250m (£202m) deal with Netflix – not the company, its subscribers, or Sandler himself. Much of his straight-to-streaming output, such as 2016’s The Do-Over or 2017’s Sandy Wexler, seems purposefully made for quiet nights in, when the toil of the week has rotted away any ability to concentrate.
Arguably, Murder Mystery (2019) – in which he and Jennifer Aniston played a hapless couple trapped in a real-life game of Cluedo while on holiday – achieved a pinnacle in mindless distraction. It wasn’t all that funny. It wasn’t all that clever. But it was eminently watchable. It’s also funny to see how much its sequel riffs on Knives Out, seeing as the original Murder Mystery preceded that Rian Johnson film and the whodunnit craze it spawned. Because, essentially, Murder Mystery 2 is what you watch if it...

Chris Rock may have turned down an invitation to present at the 95th annual Academy Awards earlier this month, but there was no way he was missing this.
On Sunday, he appeared in Washington, D.C. at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to celebrate his old buddy Adam Sandler. The star of “Billy Madison,” “Uncut Gems,” and the forthcoming “Murder Mystery 2” was being fêted as this year’s recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
Rock came out and, upon seeing Paul Pelosi, referenced the bond the two shared—being physically attacked. Whereas the 82-year-old San Francisco businessman (and husband of former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi) was nearly killed by a deranged lunatic, Rock was merely whapped across the face by Will Smith.

One would have never expected to hear the names Adam Sandler and Mark Twain uttered in the same sentence. Yet, the Sandman has been given one of the highest honors in comedy, the Mark Twain Award for American Humor. Yes, the wit behind the great debate of whether shampoo or conditioner is better now holds a coveted humor prize.
While the merits of Adam Sandler’s humor can be debated, some of his closest comedians friends took the opportunity to take jabs at Sandler and his movies. Conan O’Brien, who previously honored Lorne Michaels and Will Ferrell, said, “Have you asked yourself why so many of Adam’s friends were available? Because if Adam isn’t working, they aren’t working,” a poke at Sandler casting so many of his buddies in his movies.
Ben Stiller, who worked with Adam Sandler on The Meyerowitz Stories, said, “His work feels effortless.

While some may be bewildered at the decision to honor a sweatpants-wearing hooligan like Adam Sandler with an award as prestigious as the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, you would be hard-pressed to argue that he didn’t deserve it. The comedian, actor, writer, producer, and musician has more than 80 movies and seven albums under his belt. His work has grossed more than $4 billion — and he is beloved by everyone from your grandma to your nephew. And like every Sandler movie that’s ever been panned by critics and cheered by audiences, the 2023 Mark Twain Prize ceremony at the Kennedy Center in D.C. on Sunday night felt like it might have just been an excuse for a giant reunion for the popular comedian’s goofball-cum-genius friends.

Way back in 2018, the "Three Identical Strangers" documentary shocked viewers around the world as it told the story of three triplets who were separated at birth. The film chronicled the journey of Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman as they discovered that they were identical triplets who were placed with different adoptive families as part of a scientific experiment. Now, their story is being turned into a limited TV series under Sony Pictures Television, with Ben Stiller in talks to star as all three brothers.
Reps for Stiller and Sony did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment, but according to Variety, Stiller is set to lead the production company's forthcoming series.

In a casting that raises several questions, Ben Stiller is in final talks to star in “Three Identical Strangers,” a limited series adaptation of the acclaimed documentary film, according to Variety.
The 2018 film, which was directed by Tim Wardle and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland — three identical triplets who meet by chance as adults, and the revelation of the undisclosed scientific experiment that separated them by birth. Upon its release, “Three Identical Strangers” received positive reviews, and made the shortlist for the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category.

Let’s take a look at the distinguished career of writer/director Noah Baumbach, who was Oscar-nominated twice for the film “Marriage Story.” It was his second outing with Netflix, following “The Meyerowitz Stories” starring Adam Sandler and Dustin Hoffman. A third film for the streamer was an adaptation of “White Noise” for 2022, starring his partner Greta Gerwig, a nominee for writing “Little Women” and directing/writing “Lady Bird.”
Baumbach is no stranger to the Oscars, having been nominated for 2005’s “The Squid and the Whale” starring Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney. All of these films are featured in our photo gallery above, which ranks all 10 movies directed by Baumbach from worst to best. Our list also includes “Frances Ha,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Margot at the Wedding,” “Greenberg,” “While We’re Young” and “Mistress America.”...

Before we get to the "Murder Mystery 2" trailer, can we talk about Adam Sandler's career real quick? The popular actor simply owned the 1990s with a string of hilarious hits like "Billy Madison," "Happy Gilmore," and "The Wedding Singer," but a funny thing happened on the way to establishing himself as the go-to comedy leading man. A director by the name of Paul Thomas Anderson approached him for this little movie called "Punch-Drunk Love" in 2002, casting him entirely against type and giving him a career-best role that allowed audiences to see that he offered so much more than what they'd gotten used to. Of course, he'd follow that up with about a dozen more movies that we'd expect from him ... that is, until he enjoyed a bit of a renaissance period between "Sandy Wexler," "The Meyerowitz Stories," and especially the Safdie brothers anxiety-inducing "Uncut Gems."

It’s somewhat hard to believe, but Adam Sandler — the guest on this edition of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in late 2022 in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where Sandler received the fest’s performance of the year award — has been a star for more than 30 years now.
Hired as a writer on Saturday Night Live in 1990, the Brooklyn-born comedian soon began appearing in his own sketches and won over audiences with his madcap man-child characters. He then transitioned to a film career, co-writing and starring in movies about lovable losers who win the day, like 1995’s Billy Madison, 1996’s Happy Gilmore and 1998’s The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy.
While Sandler, now 56, has continued to consistently pump out unabashedly goofy comedies to which audiences have flocked, he has also, with increasing frequency, taken aback critics by deploying serious acting...

When you think of modern film award season snubs, "Uncut Gems" is likely one of the first films to cross your mind. Besides, Benny and Josh Safdie's crime thriller stood out for its breakneck pacing and Adam Sandler's transformative lead performance. While the actor had impressed in recent films like "The Meyerowitz Stories," it was his portrayal of jeweler Howard "Howie" Ratner that was considered his true comeback after a lengthy string of flops. Needless to say, he's gotten some pretty good roles ever since, with him even being floated around for awards contention once again for "Hustle."
To the Safdies, there was no other option to play Howie other than Sandler. In an interview with Complex, the duo said that the role needed someone who could still be rooted for despite their flaws or the increasingly difficult situations he gets put in. Going off of that, they...

Come on Academy, put Adam Sandler in the game!
The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations announced on Wednesday yielded 25 first-time nominees across film and television. Among them was Sandler, who, in Jeremiah Zagar’s “Hustle,” has a dramatic turn as a basketball scout who discovers a street ball player in Spain. With AMPAS voting opening tomorrow, he’s peaking at the perfect time to garner his first Oscar nod for best actor.
Outside of his Independent Spirit Award win for “Uncut Gems” in 2020, the SAG nod was Sandler’s first major acting recognition of his 35-year career. Released by Netflix in early June, “Hustle” would have been discarded if it was with any other studio for awards prospects. But the streaming giant has made Sandler, and the movie, one of its top priorities along with a slate that includes more industry-friendly titles including war drama “All Quiet on the Western Front,...

Who would have thought that the obnoxious man-child from Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and Saturday Night Live would turn in one of the greatest performances ever captured on celluloid? As director Todd Field sees it, the performance by Adam Sandler in 2002’s Punch-Drunk Love is one of the best performances ever.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Todd Field expressed his respect for Adam Sandler, particularly his Golden Globe-nominated performance as Barry Egan. “The first film of Adam’s I ever saw was Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love…It floored me. It really is one of the great screen performances–for me–of all time.” Field added, “He has an incredible range; there’s no one like him.”
Todd Field went on to cite some of the major filmmakers that Adam Sandler has collaborated with, including James L. Brooks (2004’s Spanglish), Noah Baumbach (2017’s...
