When Andrew Karpen wants to convince a filmmaker to let him release their movie, he doesn’t blow them away by offering more and more money. For one thing, Bleecker Street, the indie studio he founded in 2014, doesn’t have the financial firepower of an Apple or a Netflix.
“Our pitch is always centered around the kind of experience that they will have with us, knowing that we will be collaborative and transparent,” Karpen says. “I always say, ‘This is not a campaign where you will just be emailed the final poster and trailer and given two tickets to the premiere.’”
And over nearly 70 films, that openness has kept Karpen and his small but mighty staff in the game. While Bleecker is celebrating its 10th anniversary, many of its competitors haven’t managed to survive in a business that’s only become more treacherous to navigate. Keira Knightley was critical about wearing corsets for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean, despite admitting that it was an easy way to slip into the character of a royal woman. She believed that women should have burned these dresses centuries ago. While the actress’s view about the constricting garment remained the same even after all these years, she has come to accept the vitality of the costume for the character.
Pirates of the Caribbean actress Keira Knightley was vocal about her hate for corsets
Knightley was just 18 when she was cast in the role of Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Apart from the challenging costumes, she also revealed that she was forced to do some stunts that she wasn’t trained for in the movie.

This year, Gold Derby’s Oscar winners odds derived from the predictions of a record 11,034 users, constituting a 1.6% participation increase compared to 2023. Naturally, such a large group is prone to intense hive mentality, which can be a good or bad thing, often depending on the category. In this case, the crowd had a handle on most of the 23 races, but there were still quite a few that tripped them up, leading to our lowest rate of accuracy in five years.
By the end of the 96th Oscars, six of Gold Derby’s expected wins had failed to pan out, making for a final accuracy rate of 73.9%. Each subgroup whose predictions were used to calculate our combined odds – including 29 industry experts, 12 in-house editors, and thousands of regular users – collectively finished with the same percentage, although our editors stood alone in being right about Best Costume Design but wrong about Best Live Action Short.

With the annual ceremony of The Oscars comes the understandable hype and speculation of who will be winners on the night. Despite there not being a Video Game category in the awards ceremony, there are still links to the industry itself with none other than Steven Spielberg.
The titan of the film industry is no stranger to academic recognition and has seen various accolades over the years. However, some people may be surprised to learn that despite his distinguished career in the film industry, he has also had a well-recognized influence on the gaming industry and is responsible for some well-known classic titles.

Everyone is aware of how talented director Steven Spielberg is, however, not many people know that the director is equally influential in the gaming industry. In 1999, the director created and served as a producer for a first-person shooter video game, Medal of Honor, which was developed by DreamWorks Interactive and published by Electronic Arts.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond
The Medal of Honor franchise was quite popular in the 2000s, however, the competition from franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield slowed it down. In 2020, the franchise made a strong comeback with Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. It was certainly a remarkable game as it became the only video game to win an Oscar. The game includes the short documentary Colette, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 93rd Academy Awards.

Denise Gough and Keira Knightley in Colette Photo: Bleeker Street Colette, 11.15pm, BBC2, Monday, November 20
Wash Westmoreland's film about the Belle Époque writer follows her on her journey to liberation from her naive provincial upbringing. She begins to blossom as her books about saucy schoolgirl Claudine - sold under the name of her husband Willy (Dominic West) start to fly off the shelves. There's an engaging complexity to the relationship between Willy and Colette which twists as the film progresses. Denise Gough also puts in a scene-stealing supporting performance as Missy, with whom Colette engages in a same-sex relationship. Beyond the impressive performances, the period is beautifully rendered and despite the film's consideration of ownership, oppression and control ultimately plays like a celebration of freedom of thought. Read what Westmoreland had to say about the influence of Max Ophüls, La Belle Époque and on the relationships in Colette.

With the true crime TV movie “Boston Strangler,” Keira Knightley has made a welcome return to the genre she excels in — period dramas. The new Hulu telefilm chronicles the true story of Loretta McLaughlin, the reporter who connected the murders of the Boston Strangler and broke the story for Boston Record American.
The killer murdered 13 women in the 1960s and McLaughlin (Knightley) reported on the ongoing story alongside Jean Cole (Carrie Coon) while dealing with the sexism of the era at the same time. Utilizing an American accent, which Knightley doesn’t often do, the actress is a firm presence on screen and carries the TV movie on her shoulders. It’s her haunting facial expressions and dogged determinism as McLaughlin that propels the movie forward. Without Knightley’s cutting central performance, the movie might not have worked, as critics have noted.

The film opens in 2020. A woman paints her lips crimson while staring at her reflection in the mirror, studying the details of her wavy blonde wig and firetruck-red skirt. Satisfied with her examination, she relaxes her shoulders and turns to the other side of the room. The camera follows and lands on a child sleeping peacefully. The woman covers the slumbering body with a blanket, gingerly plants a kiss and leaves. Outside, in the dimly lit streets of Dakar, she is followed by a chorus of men wearing complementary red djellabas. “When a drop of water falls on Earth / it’s no longer Earth,” they sing as she walks down the street, “How life is full of surprises.”
The chorus, a staple in Moussa Sène Absa’s films, is particularly useful in Xalé, the director’s passionate thriller about gender violence and retribution. It’s the last installment in the...

The film starring Carey Mulligan as Twohey and Zoe Kazan as Kantor is based on the original reporting of the Nyt duo and their subsequent bestseller She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement. The film’s script was adapted by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the Spirit Award nominee behind such films as Ida and Colette.

Exclusive: Oscar-winning Up composer Michael Giacchino will make his big-screen directing debut with a reboot of the 1954 sci-fi man-eating monster movie Them! at Warner Bros.
Giacchino is meeting with writers in hopes of getting the production up quite soon.
In the Gordon Douglas-directed original film, which also was a Warner Bros. release, a huge nest of irradiated ants are discovered in the New Mexico desert and become a national threat when two young queen ants and their consorts escape to set up new nests. The national search that ensues culminates in a battle in spillways and storm drains of Los Angeles.
“There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head,” Giacchino tells Deadline. “For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about — the nuclear age.”
He adds: “What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them!

Denise Gough took it as a sign.
The Irish actor had just found out that the pilot for Bloodmoon, the Game of Thrones spinoff set 8,000 years before the original series, in which Gough starred alongside Naomi Watts, had been canceled. The show they had made would never be seen. HBO, going back to the drawing board, would eventually return with that other Got series, House of the Dragon.
For Gough, it looked like fate. After successful excursions into video game voiceovers — Mass Effect: Andromeda, The Witcher 3 — film (Juliet, Naked, Colette) and TV (Guerrilla, Paula) — she decided to return to her first love, theater.
“At that moment I thought: Ok, alright; obviously my fate is not to work on that sort of thing,” Gough said, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the recent Lucca Comics and Games convention. “I wanted to return to theater,...

“She Said” screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz has said the New York Times journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein story in 2017 fed her chapters of their book as they were writing it in order to bring the novel to screen sooner.
Speaking as part of a Variety-sponsored London Film Festival panel on screenwriting, the British scribe of such films as the Keira Knightley-fronted “Colette” and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Ida” described working closely with reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey to write Universal’s film adaptation of their 2019 book. The process took around four years, said Lenkiewicz.
“I started working on it before I read the book,” said the Devon-born writer, who had six “freeing” weeks of writing on her own before even getting sight of a chapter.
“I met the journalists and was writing it, and they were feeding me the chapters. That was an interesting way of working because...

There are two clear themes that have emerged by now at this year’s Venice Film Festival: one is the concept of the lost soul and the other is the sometimes perilous consequence of letting big-name directors cut loose on their dream projects. At 92, Frederick Wiseman has earned the right to do whatever he wants, but anyone getting over-excited about the prospect of this, his fiction debut, ought to know that Un Couple a) isn’t strictly fiction at all, and b) is very much of a piece with his famously unhurried longform documentaries.
The lost soul in his Venice Competition film is Leo Tolstoy’s wife Sophia, played by French actress Nathalie Boutefeu reading a text assembled from various letters between her and her famous literary husband. Aside from Sophia’s hairstyle and dress, there aren’t really any clues to period,...

HBO Max’s “The Staircase,” which concluded Thursday, has its share of revelations for longtime followers of the true crime case. But even for viewers who watched every bit of the 2004 docuseries, one special line from the dramatized version undeniably stands out. It’s Parker Posey, playing Durham, N.C. prosecutor Freda Black, quoting a line from accused killer, Michael Peterson: “I was in the Marines, like to fuck, suck and rim.”
Although Posey grew up in Louisiana and Mississippi, her flawless execution of Black’s Southern drawl (most notable in the delivery of the line “pure-t filth”), was close to effortless — but not quite. There was a phrase she repeated to herself each day on set before the cameras started rolling.
“What would bring me into her voice was: ‘gay military men,’” Posey told Variety, perfectly re-creating her character’s delivery from the show.

And he found a good audience when he was given a career retrospective on Wednesday ahead of the Cannes premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick,” taking the moment to champion the theatrical experience and explain what makes a movie that can only be seen on the big screen.
When Cruise was asked if he ever considered moving “Maverick” to streaming after it was delayed for nearly two years during the pandemic, he replied, “Never gonna happen.” And he further boasted...

“Star Trek” has always been known for its progressive casting on screen. But over seven live-action series and 13 movies dating back more than half a century, the science-fiction franchise has never had a woman composer – until now.
Nami Melumad, who has been scoring the animated “Star Trek: Prodigy,” has stepped up a notch and is scoring weekly episodes of “Strange New Worlds,” the new Paramount Plus series that chronicles the voyages of the pre-Captain Kirk Enterprise.
“It’s been a very busy few months,” says the Israeli-born composer, who has been writing an average of 45 minutes of music per episode of “Strange New Worlds” and is now on her 14th episode of “Prodigy” for Nickelodeon.
Melumad’s “Star Trek” adventures actually began on “Short Treks,” the 10-part series of shorts exploring various aspects of the “Trek” universe. She scored “Q&a,” the 2019 episode that featured Anson Mount as Christopher Pike,...

Since the launch of Guardian Documentaries in 2016, the short film division of the British daily newspaper has garnered an Oscar and a BAFTA over the past two consecutive years, scoring the best British short film trophy for Cherish Oteka’s “The Black Cop” on March 13.
About Gamal “G” Turawa, a Black gay man who joined the London police department to help change its racial make-up, “The Black Cop” explores Turawa’s memories of homophobia, racial profiling, and harassment. Commissioned by Guardian Documentaries, the doc received additional funds from the BFI Doc Society Fund.
“Guardian Documentaries compliment Guardian journalism,” says Lindsay Poulton, head of Guardian Documentaries. “I felt that Cherish’s initial proposal expressed urgent themes in a creative way. We were reflecting on the Black Lives Matter movement; on the push for LGBTQ+ equality; we knew there were a lot of important, uncomfortable conversations to be had about policing and abuse of power.

Denise Gough and Keira Knightley in Colette Photo: Bleeker Street Colette, 11.15pm, BBC2, Tuesday, March 15
Keira Knightley embodies the French writer as she undergoes a transformation through the course of Wash Westmoreland's film. At first a naive provincial, she becomes increasingly liberated as her books about saucy schoolgirl Claudine - sold under the name of her husband Willy (Dominic West) - begin to sell like hot cakes. Westmoreland allows the complexity to shine in the relationship between Colette and Willy, as Colette blossoms and begins to take control of her own story, while Denise Gough puts in a scene-stealing supporting performance as Missy, with whom Colette engages in a same-sex relationship. Read what Westmoreland had to say about the influence of Max Ophüls, La Belle Époque and on the relationships in Colette.
