Elvis Presley‘s girlfriend revealed the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll had some interesting thoughts about this life and the next. She even said that Elvis’ spiritual beliefs influenced how he dressed. Priscilla Presley shared some similar memories in a famous book.
Elvis Presley’s girlfriend said he believed in Jesus and a Hindu saint
Linda Thompson was Elvis’s girlfriend from 1972 to 1976. She was a beauty pageant contestant and a songwriter, penning tunes for Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, and the Backstreet Boys. While the media has a history of ignoring her, she’s an important part of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s life story.
In her 2016 book A Little Thing Called Life, Thompson had a lot to say about Elvis’s spiritual beliefs and practices. “I think at the core of his being, and at the core of his belief, Elvis was a Christian, and...

This past week saw the release of The Book of Clarence, a movie about a down-on-his-luck guy who hits upon a get-rich-quick scheme that leads him into a heap of trouble. It’s a classic topic for a movie, but it is treading on more controversial ground than usual. Because in the case of this story about a hustler getting in over his head, the hustle happens to be set around Israel and Palestine during the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth. In fact, that is Clarence’s whole scheme: He sees Jesus and decides to get into the messiah business.
This is not the first film to portray the story of one of Jesus’ fictional contemporaries. Monty Python’s Life of Brian attracted protests, controversy, and endless talk show guest slots over its portrayal of a man who was definitely not the messiah, just a very naughty boy.

Jeymes Samuel, aka The Bullitts, directed a Western in 2021 called "The Harder They Fall," which took the names of real post-Civil War cowboys and gunslingers and put them into a highly stylized, highly fictionalized adventure story that was exhilarating to watch and refreshingly complex. What Samuel seemed to be doing was reclaiming the Western genre from the hands of boors like John Wayne and his associated "white savior" stories that, for many Hollywood generations, deliberately ignored the Black experience.
Samuel now takes a similar approach to the Hollywood Biblical epic with "The Book of Clarence," an exciting, ambitious, sloppy, but somewhat excellent New Testament remix, replete with a mishmash of tones, anachronisms, and interesting ideas. "Clarence" sees Jerusalem in Ad 33 as the setting of a modern crime drama, wherein the title character (Lakeith Stanfield) interacts with a slap-happy John the Baptist (David Oyelowo), his own bitter twin brother Thomas the...

Sometime around 11 p.m. on Dec. 2, Gene Simmons will walk offstage at Madison Square Garden in New York as the final notes of “Rock and Roll All Nite” echo through the arena, remove his Demon makeup for the last time, and say goodbye to the band he formed five decades ago. It’s easy to be skeptical about this considering nearly every farewell tour in rock history has been bullshit, this is actually the second Kiss goodbye tour, and this isn’t a band known for leaving money on the table,...

In the early days of the culture war, science stood on one side and religion on the other. In 1925, the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial hung on whether a Tennessee high-school instructor had violated state law by teaching human evolution. He was on trial, but it was really Charles Darwin who was on trial. Darwin won, and so, in a larger sense, did Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, and the whole tsunami of advanced science that was setting the stage for the 20th century. By the time physicists and astronomers were exploring the origins of the universe, the whole “God made the world in 7 days” idea, even if you fervently believed it, did not pretend to be “science.”
But with the rise of the American Evangelical movement and its worldly political engine, the Christian Right, what once looked like a science-vs.-faith dichotomy began to break down. You could see this in...

How did I find monsters? My father.
It was around Halloween 1956, the same week of Elvis Presley’s second appearance on Ed Sullivan.
My parents often let me stay up and watch late movies. Adventure stuff mainly: Tarzan, tiger hunters, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry. Earlier that year, the first monster I met was King Kong, when my father introduced me to him late one night.
One evening a couple of weeks later, my father said, “I have something special for you tonight.” It was James Whale’s 1931 Frankenstein.
My mother wasn’t happy.

Jeopardy! is a beloved TV game show. Since its creation in 1964, the show has risen to popularity. But like many game shows, Jeopardy! has had its share of controversies. Many of which stem from their clues.
Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek I Amanda Edwards/Getty Images ‘Jeopardy!’ received backlash for an ‘offensive’ clue to reference a disease
The premise of Jeopardy! is different from many game shows. What makes the show unique is the contestant must answer in the form of a question when responding to clues. Each round of jeopardy consists simple and hard clues in different categories.
There have been times where the clues has sparked controversy. According to Entertainment Tonight, the show received criticism in June 2021 for using an offensive clue describing postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (Pots). Guest host Savannah Guthrie read the clue referencing the disorder, “Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is also known as Grinch syndrome because this organ is too small.

David Perdue, former President Donald Trump’s pick to replace Brian Kemp as governor of Georgia, got trounced in last week’s Republican primary, only receiving about 22 percent of the vote compared to Kemp’s 74 percent. Trump is now pushing the false idea that the 50-point defeat was the result of “obvious” voter fraud.

Mammon is a haunted house thriller. From production company Ton of Hats, this title is currently in post-production. A blend of horror and mystery, Mammon's story involves a young couple and their new home. The house has a demonic spirit, living in the walls. And, this spirit can only be removed with a hefty price. As well, Isaac Walsh (Rook) developed this feature, which stars: Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Taye Diggs and Jessica Uberuaga. The film's early concept artwork is here, along with a few more story details. The concept poster shows the young couple: Brad (Diggs) and Jess (Uberuaga). In their new home with candlelight, they have no idea what is in store for them. Meanwhile, a predatory bird hovers darkly in the background. This graphic portends the dark forces within. Mammon also has a moral tale. A mammon is a spirit that lures people through the vice of greed.

The Bible, according to Milo Rau, “is a book about a guy losing his fight against state power,” but who ultimately prevails by establishing a movement. It is that struggle that he depicts in his new film, “The New Gospel.”
The documentary project is a kind of political Passion Play in which Cameroonian activist Yvan Sagnet portrays a Jesus who leads a revolt for the rights of migrants that were forced to flee their homelands and cross the Mediterranean only to be “enslaved” on the agricultural fields of southern Italy.
The film, which premieres in Venice Days, is part of Rau’s “Trilogy of Ancient Myths” that began with “Orestes in Mosul” and concludes next year with “Antigone in the Amazon.”
Thematically, “The New Gospel” also follows his 2018 work “The Congo Tribunal,” which examines the causes of the Congolese Civil War, a conflict he describes as the “biggest and bloodiest economic war in human history.

After sparking a fight with Donald Trump last week, Bill Maher used his New Rules this week to take on someone even more powerful: Jesus.
Riffing off of Ryan Reynolds’ recent apology for getting married at a former slave plantation, the Real Time pointed out that the hero of the New Testament wasn’t always on the right side of the slavery debate, either.
In multiple passages of the Bible — Colossians 3:22, Ephesians 6:5 and Peter 2:18, according to Maher — Christ encourages slaves to “submit to your masters.”
No one is perfect, Maher reminded, especially in America where, “We’re all six degrees from genocidal assh*les. If we start turning history into a game of guilt by association it never ends.”
He then gave some examples.
“The stock exchange is 2 miles from New York’s first slave market.”
“The country itself is named after a slave trader named Amerigo.

When the Rev. Dr. William Barber II saw that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was the first to eulogize the late John Lewis as he lay in state inside the Capitol rotunda on July 27th, the civil rights leader thought of Jesus admonishing the Pharisees. “We love the tombs of the prophets,” said Barber, paraphrasing Jesus in the New Testament. “We don’t need to be talking about how hard and how great it was that John Lewis stood so firm against injustice. What we need to be doing is repenting and saying,...

Some of the films they got to work together include Rapakal, Bhaskar The Rascal, Thaskaraveeran, and Puthiya Niyamam. While it has been some time since the audience got to see this talented pair back on the silver screens, reports from Mollywood say that they might be teaming up again and this time it would be a biopic. Sources say that Mammootty has been approached to play the late Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Y Rajashekar Reddy in his biopic and Nayanthara is in talks to play the female lead in it. The film will be directed by Mahi Raghav and he is currently busy with the pre-production to get it on to the floors. Mammootty is one of the busiest actors with a number of films in his kitty including Parole which is getting ready for release later this year and Abhrahaminte Santhathikal and Mamankam. Nayanthara, on the other hand, has been bagging some of the best projects and mostly heroine-centric films like Maya, Dora and Aramm. Her next film release would be Imaikkaa Nodigal in which she plays the central character. The film has Atharva in the lead role with Vijay Sethupathi playing a cameo. She has also inked the deal to star in the biopic Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy in which she will be sharing the screen space with the Tollywood megastar Chiranjeevi. Hollywood has no institutional memory. One of the reasons that the vast majority of its execs aren’t in therapy, and should be, is because they don’t want to talk about the past even if it’s prologue. They’re purposefully amnesiac. Otherwise, they’d have to confront the lunatic decisions they make over and over again (since repeating the same behavior and expecting different results is one definition of insanity). Which is why I want to revisit Summer 2007 whose $4.18 billion worth of threequels and blockbusters smashed the May 1st through Labor Day domestic box office gross record. It’s not that Hollywood denizens started doing everything right. It’s more like they just started doing less things wrong. The product is still terrible. The process is still tainted.
