Philipp Kadelbach, director and co-creator of the series “We Children From Bahnhof Zoo,” says his initial impulse when approached to helm the series was to steer well clear of what he saw as a fool’s errand, given the iconic status in Germany and elsewhere of Uli Edel’s 1981 feature film “Christiane F.,” which – like the series – is based on the book “Christiane F.: Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo.”
“I said, ‘I’m not going to do this. I’m not crazy.’ Because it’s like a monument for so many people. And everybody would start attacking me because I’ve gone to tell this story again, and they really loved it,” he tells Variety.
However, having read Annette Hess’ scripts, he saw how she had approached the material in a different way. The film felt like it had a voyeuristic approach to the subject, he says. He resolved to...

Producer Gian-Piero Ringel, Oscar nominated for Wim Wenders’ “Pina,” and writer-director Sven Bohse, who directed true crime miniseries “Dark Woods,” a ratings hit last year in Germany, will be presenting their political thriller “Hinterland” this week as part of the European Film Market’s Co-Pro Series program. They spoke to Variety about the eight-part series, which has been acquired for international sales by Global Screen.
In “Hinterland,” former Neo-Nazi Andreas has started a new life in Berlin with his girlfriend and their daughter. He is “a man with a good heart who needs to feel needed in order to stay strong. When he feels weak, his dark side emerges,” says Bohse, whose directing credits also include Annette Hess’ 1950s-set miniseries “Ku’damm 56” and “Ku’damm 59.”
After an assault on a liberal politician takes place, the German intelligence service recruits Andreas, and sends him to infiltrate the far-right scene, and identify Nero,...

Germany’s Zdf Enterprises has acquired global distribution rights to three-part period drama “Ku’damm 63,” the third instalment in one of Zdfe’s best-selling franchises, which has been licensed to more than 30 broadcasters around the globe.
Produced by UFA Fiction for German public broadcaster Zdf and made up of three 90-minute episodes, the miniseries will be presented shortly to select buyers.
Set to premiere on Zdf on March 21, 22 and 24, airing at a peak primetime time of 8.15 p.m., “Ku’damm 63” marks a followup to “Ku’damm 56,” which premiered on Zdf in 2016, reaching up to 6.35 million viewers and a 19.6% market share, and “Ku’damm 59,” which bowed in March 2018.
The series’ premise remains the same: the story of Germany’s halting evolution toward larger justice and liberty told through the loves, hard-won freedoms and suffering of three sisters, Monika, Helga and Eva, daughters of a conservative matriarch.
Time has moved on, creating a contrast.
