In an unexpected turn in the streaming sector, Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly discussing the possibility of licensing some of its original HBO content to competitor Netflix. The strategy diverges from the industry’s recent streaming strategy of hoarding content for their own direct-to-consumer services.
It’s not the first time HBO has explored syndication, with “Curb Your Enthusiasm” airing on TV Guide Network and “Entourage” on Spike. And from 2014 to 2018, HBO licensed shows to Amazon’s Prime Video. Still, it’s been years since an HBO original was available on a service not owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
The roster of HBO shows potentially heading to Netflix remains undisclosed, but according to recent reports, it includes high-profile titles such as “Insecure.” Until an actual deal is struck, we can only speculate on the HBO shows that align well with Netflix’s content catalog. Netflix has taken down an episode of W/Bob and David, its 2015 series starring the Mr. Show duo of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, over a sketch that showed Cross in blackface, Deadline has confirmed.
Titled “Know Your Rights,” the sketch featured Cross as Gilvin Daughtry, the leader of Citizens Against Unlawful Abuse!, who stops at a DUI checkpoint and interacts with an affable policeman played by Keegan-Michael Key. The driver repeatedly tries to force a confrontation with the cop and ultimately applies blackface in an effort to prove that “every race” has equal rights in the U.S. Daughtry then is tased and pepper-sprayed.
Cross noted the sketch in a tweet Monday that included video that since has been disabled. He wrote: “Hey all, Netflix is going to pull this sketch from With Bob & David because the ridiculous, foolish character I play puts on “black face” at one point. The...

Brace yourselves, Buddy Cole fans. The Kids in the Hall cofounder Kevin McDonald says the Canadian sketch comedy troupe may be making a return to television for the first time in nearly a decade. “You’re the first guy to know this,” McDonald told News-Press.com. “Last night, before I got on the plane, we got a Kids in the Hall group message to all of us. Lorne Michaels wants us to do what ‘Mr. Show’ did, and do like six episodes of sketches for something like Netflix.” McDonald was referring to “W/ Bob & David” a 2015 Netflix sketch comedy miniseries created.
