Over 8,400 short films were submitted for the 2nd annual Sony Future Filmmaker Awards in Los Angeles, but only six filmmakers walked away with a win Thursday night.
148 countries were represented at the event held at the Cary Grant Theatre on the Sony Pictures Studios lot, with films competing in six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Environment, Animation, Student and Future Format.
Created by Creo and sponsored by Sony, the black tie affair hosted by “Entertainment Tonight” correspondent Denny Directo was preceded by a week-long industry immersion program and workshops with established Hollywood executives.
Winners were selected by a group of industry experts — including Sony Pictures Classics cofounders/co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, and cinematographers Rob Hardy and Kate Reid, with Unjoo Moon and Robert
Primes selecting the initial longlist. Director Justin Chadwick chaired both selection processes.

The era-ending Twenty One Pilots album Clancy is dragging out its grand finale just a little bit longer, but lead singer Tyler Joseph promises it’s for a good reason. The album, a conclusion to the duo’s multi-album arc that started with Blurryface in 2015, was originally schedule to arrive on May 17. It has now been delayed for one week while he completes music videos for each song with drummer Josh Dun and videographer Mark Eshleman.

From deadly climate catastrophe to geopolitical chaos, Hollywood has predicted a nightmare year ahead
“Twenty-twenty-four” sounds like a stutter and looks like a typo, but more so than most segments of the sprawling expanse condensed into what we understand as the future, the year has a particularly futuristic ring to it that’s long captured cinematic imaginations.
The consensus seems to be that homo sapiens won’t be doing so hot by that point, falling victim either to our own rapacious destruction of the planet or each other, but with a savior never too far off to change the course of history. Surveying the major bullet points of the past year – capitalism run amok, mounting cruelty toward immigrants and refugees, more war than usual – we could certainly use one. In examining the varied canon of movies set in 2024, a viewer samples a slideshow of worst-case scenarios, each leaving some back door or way out.

Lupita Nyong’o has joined Goodbye Julia, Sudan’s entry for this year’s Best International feature race at the Oscars, as an executive producer.
Directed by Sudanese filmmaker Mohamed Kordofani in his feature film debut, the pic explores the events leading up the 2011 split between Sudan’s southern and northern populations. The film made history in Cannes this year as the first Sudanese film to play in the festival after it was selected for Un Certain Regard.
The film’s Cannes premiere took place just weeks after fighting broke out in Khartoum due to a clash between rival generals, which has led to the deaths of 5,000 people and uprooted seven million people.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son, Joseph Baena, rang in his 26th birthday by posting a video of himself to Instagram, which was taken at the beach and captured Baena wearing nothing more than a black Speedo.
“Twenty-Six? More like Twenty Sick! Here’s your Pov of me running into my late twenties,” the actor captioned the video, which showed off his chiseled physique as he ran across the sand after taking a dip in the ocean.
One day earlier, Baena completed his first triathlon. He uploaded photos of his flexed arm muscles to Instagram to announce his achievement.
“Competed in my first triathlon today! What a great experience it was to compete with such amazing athletes,” he wrote.

The Netflix original D.P. was a super hit back in 2021, and the way it ended had everyone expecting a second season soon enough. Our wait is finally over, and the next season is just around the corner, sporting more emotional damage while still being fun for viewers. Our main characters are a part of the D.P. (Deserter pursuit) department of the military, which happens to be the unit that apprehends deserters and brings them back. Season 1 explores the reasons the men choose to desert. The show is based on the webtoon D.P. Gaeui Nal, which translates to D.P. Dog Days, written by Kim Bo-Tong.

I'm a '90s kid. I mean, I was actually a proper child in the '90s. I turned seven in the first year of the 21st century. When most people say they are '90s kids, they really mean they were born in the '80s and had their formative coming of age years in the '90s. Consequently, my relationship to the pop culture of the decade of my birth is rather odd, as those formative years for me were really the early 2000s. Micro-generations make a big difference.
Music, in particular, is a weak spot for me. I missed out on grunge, neo-soul, gangsta rap, and so much more. My popular music awareness started forming around the time of "Millennium" by the Backstreet Boys in 1999. So, I have no nostalgia for this era of music or, quite frankly, know much of it.

The success of “Extreme Job” upon its release was a surprise to most, its makers included. The unassuming action comedy, starring Ryu Seung-ryong, Lee Hanee and more, creeped up quietly and based off a strong word of mouth, went on to make history as the most financially successful Korean film of all time and the second most-attended domestic theatrical release ever in the country. On the back of its success, its director Lee Byeong-heon was able to have financed and produced “Dream”, a project that he had been wanting to make for nearly 10 years before the release of “Extreme Job”.

Writer and director Celine Song presents a question at the very beginning of “Past Lives”: Who are these people sitting together at a cozy Lower East Side bar? But the answer is as much about place as it is about Hae Sung (Tao Yoo) and Nora (Greta Lee). The A24 film shows their relationship in three very different places and times — as children in Seoul, as young adults reconnecting over the internet from different continents, and then meeting again in New York City years later — and while they’re always wonderful foils and complements for each other, at each point, something isn’t quite right.
In the middle section of the film, where Hae Sung and Nora reconnect 12 years after Nora’s family immigrated to Canada, what makes their relationship feel both special and burdensome is the time difference. It was important to Song that the audience experience the...

Eleven seasons. Two hundred and seventy-five episodes. Twenty-eight Emmy Awards. Yes, “Cheers” was one of the longest-running, most successful – and most beloved – situation comedies in television history. And a milestone is about to be reached this weekend: 30 years since the series finale aired on NBC. Saturday marks precisely 30 years since the show bid prime time adieu on May 20, 1993, the last time Sam (Ted Danson) poured Norm (George Wendt) a glass of beer at the famed Boston bar.
To celebrate the event, Pluto TV’s Sitcom Legends channel will be airing a marathon of the entire final “Cheers” season, which comprises a whopping 26 episodes in the era before streaming, this Saturday the 20th. It begins at 7 a.m. Pt/10 a.m. Et with the first episode of Season 11 and continues in order through the finale. When X2: X-Men United was released 20 years ago, most critics agreed that it was a Hollywood rarity: a sequel that was far superior to the original film. To this day, X2 is regarded as being one of the best films in the X-Men franchise, and it remains a favorite of several of the actors involved in the series. When the film came out, Hugh Jackman talked about how X2 had addressed a lot of the fan chatter about the first movie’s weaknesses, and he could tell right away that X2 was going to be a fan favorite. Rina Sawayama makes her acting debut in the brand-new John Wick: Chapter 4, and it sure would’ve been a waste if she hadn’t contributed to the soundtrack as well. Ahead of the film’s theatrical premiere this Friday, March 24th, the Japanese-British pop experimentalist has shared the anthem “Eye for an Eye.”
“Eye for an Eye” was produced and co-written by Tyler Bates, who’s also composed the futuristic-sounding scores for all four John Wick films. It begins with a funky, heavy-hitting synth riff that definitely feels a little reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer,” and the ’90s industrial vibes only get stronger from there as the instrumentals layer more and more, culminating in a pretty explosive chorus.
Lyrically, Sawayama’s narrator is on the prowl for revenge: “An eye for an eye, a life for a life/ I’ll see you in hell on the other side,...

Say this about the pandemic: There are now enough songs about Covid-19 to make for a pretty eclectic playlist. The track lineup would include T Turbo, Gunna and Young Thug’s chilled-out “Quarantine Clean,” Luke Combs’ forlorn “Six Feet Apart,” and Twenty One Pilots’ kitschy, almost romantic “Level of Concern.” If nothing else, the virus has found common ground between genres that otherwise would have barely much in common.

Oscar-winning writer, director and producer Cameron Crowe has inked with UTA. The firm will work alongside Crowe’s longtime manager Irving Azoff to rep the filmmaker in all areas including film, TV and other mediums.
As a documentary filmmaker, Crowe recently produced David Crosby: Remember My Name and other projects, including Pearl Jam Twenty, Elton John and Leon Russell: The Union. Crowe won an Original Screenplay Oscar in 2001 for his movie Almost Famous, which he directed and produced. That film was loosely based on his own life as the young correspondent for Rolling Stone magazine, where he was hired at age 15 and interviewed the likes of Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin.

Herb Stempel, the federal whistleblower who exposed how the NBC game show “Twenty-One” was manipulated for ratings, died last month at the age of 93. His death was confirmed this weekend by Stempel’s stepdaughter to The New York Times.
Stempel’s story was told in the Robert Redford film “Quiz Show,” which starred John Turturro as Stempel and earned five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Stempel, an Army veteran attending school on the G.I. Bill, applied to be on “Twenty-One” and was handpicked by producer Dan Enright to be the star of the show, portrayed as an American underdog making thousands for his family.
Stempel was given the answers to questions in advance, winning thousands during his run on the show.
