Zack Snyder had so many plans for Henry Cavill’s Superman during the reign of the DC Extended Universe, but unfortunate circumstances led to the downfall of the franchise. Now, with James Gunn already rebuilding the new era of heroes and villains under DC Universe, can his version live up to the game?
Henry Cavill in Man of Steel / Warner Bros. Pictures
With the news of the upcoming Superman movie, it’s quite inevitable to wonder what would have happened with Cavill’s version had he never taken off the cape and suit.
Zack Snyder Reveals Original Plans For Henry Cavill’s Superman
Zack Snyder spoke with GQ and extensively discussed Superman’s narrative in the once-promising Dceu franchise.
It’s birth, deaths, and resurrection, really is what the first three movies are. In the end, they’re Superman stories. I think the people get sidetracked by Batman a little bit.

More than a year ago, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios as Co-Producers and Co-CEOs, despite Dceu severely underperforming, fans were disappointed and angry. Mostly due to the universe being completely rebooted despite having a few hits among a lot of failures.
Safran and Gunn announced a slate of movies, among them being the new live-action movie ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’ Considering that the movie recently got quite a few updates, we decided to summarize everything in this neat guide.
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will focus on a different, more jaded Supergirl
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be based on the comic written by Tom King. The limited series ran from 2021 to 2022 and painted Supergirl in a much darker light than we’re used to seeing her in. During the destruction of her home planet Krypton, Supergirl was stuck on a piece of the planet that drifted away.

Ever since his breakout role in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel as Superman/Clark Kent, Henry Cavill has established himself as the “King of the Nerds.” Even though his run as The Last Son of Krypton didn’t end on a high note, his popularity with fans remains ever so high.

Cavill is a role model for his fans for a lot of reasons. His gentlemanly and shy guy attitude has won over hearts at interviews and award shows, and his looks and physique make even the toughest of men question their manliness. And Cavill has put in a lot of hard work to maintain that personality.

James Gunn is currently on a tight and hectic schedule working on both Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. With both hands full and timetable loaded, fans have felt deeply concerned about the filmmaker and the fate of the two projects.
John Cena in Peacemaker
The director addressed this query on his social media platform, and it seems he is devoting more time for Superman while still making visible progress on the Peacemaker sequel. It is a tough job to handle two different projects and develop them at the same time, but that seems to be the thrill and joy of it.

Both Batman and Superman were meant to inspire; one lived in the shadow of fear, the other in the light of hope. The two superheroes have similar goals in life: they want to thwart evil while leading separate lives in order to defend their city and its citizens. They follow different paths that pit them against the most evil villains; they are neither allies nor rivals.
Batman and Superman, no matter what, never lose sight of who they are and, thus, are adamant about upholding their moral standards. There is a fundamental distinction in the characters’ origin stories, even though at times it seems like they are more alike than different.

Superman: The Animated Series is widely credited for popularising Superman among a wider audience. The series, which aired from 1996 to 2000, smoothly modernized the character as the animated series allowed the creators to explore different ideas. However, in one particular episode, they went too far.
Superman: The Animated Series
The two-part “Little Girl Lost” episodes from season 3 of the show initially had a very different setting, which would be dark for a show that aired on Kids’ WB. Writer Evan Dorkin once explained how the second half was changed at the last minute because the episode had a Nazi concentration camp-style setting.
In the two-part episode, Granny Goodness transforms innocent teenagers into soulless Parademons. Dorkin explained that one of the producers opposed this idea and they had to change the whole plot.

Superman seems to have all the types of powers in the world, and with such a massive arsenal, it is inevitable to have some of them nearly forgotten into oblivion. In fact, many of his absurd powers have come and gone, retaining only some of his iconic skills such as super-strength, flight, cold breath, and X-ray vision, to name a few.

With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom came the end of the Dceu, otherwise known as the Snyderverse. And while some celebrate its demise, there are also many who mourn the loss of their heroes. But before we turn the page completely, let’s take a look back and rank the entire DC Extended Universe. I’m sure this won’t be controversial at all.
17. Suicide Squad
It doesn’t seem likely that we’ll ever get the fabled Ayer Cut of this film, but the one we received was rough. Filled with enough licensed music that it feels like a music video, Suicide Squad does everything wrong. From characters being introduced multiple times to the worst iteration of the Joker ever put to film, everything about this one is just a mess. If you love plots that don’t make sense and bad CGI, then this one is for you.

Actor Nicholas Hoult may play the Man of Steel’s arch nemesis – Lex Luthor in ‘Superman: Legacy’, completing the core cast for the superhero reboot, with David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan already set to play Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
Nicholas was one of the actors who was reportedly in the running for the titular role, instead, Gunn — the co-chief of DC Studios and the writer-director of the film — picked Nicholas to play Luthor, the industry titan with a bald head and an abiding fixation on bringing down the Last Son of Krypton, reports Variety.
With the actors strike over, Gunn has been busy filling out his cast. He confirmed on social media that María Gabriela de Faría was recently cast as another villain, the Engineer. Chapter One of James Gunn's new cinematic DC Comics universe is titled "Gods and Monsters." This phrase goes back to a line of dialogue from Dr. Septimus Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) in James Whale's "Bride of Frankenstein." How fitting then that "Gods and Monsters" kicks off with a Frankenstein-inspired animated TV series: "Creature Commandos."
The premise is simple: A World War II comic in the vein of Marvel's "Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandos" but with Universal Horror monsters. The original line-up was Lieutenant Matthew Shrieve (a normal human team leader), Sergeant Vincent Velcoro (a vampire), Private Lucky Taylor (a Frankenstein-ian homunculus), Private Warren Griffith (a werewolf), and team medic Dr. Myrra Rhodes (a Medusa-esque Gorgon).
The team was created by legendary writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Pat Broderick; the Creature Commandos debuted in 1980's "Weird War Tales" #93. Now, an updated version of the team will make it...

Before Warner Bros. launched the Dceu with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar had pitched a Superman trilogy that would have reinvented the iconic hero in a big way.
While speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matthew Vaughn said, “Mark and I sat down and plotted out a three film trilogy, pitched it to Warner Bros. before ‘Man of Steel’… we pitched how to do a trilogy of Superman movies and Warners said they weren’t interested. That’s as far as it went.” That may be as far as it went for Warner Bros., but Vaughn did spill a few details of what he had in mind.
Vaughn would have embraced the tone of the original Richard Donner Superman movie but with a modern sensibility. It also would have changed Superman’s origin in a big way. “I think Donner nailed it,” Vaughn said.

It's the Circle of Life: Disney keeps returning to the same well over and over until it runs dry, at which point the studio is forced to innovate again. After a decade of raking in billions of dollars by remaking its beloved animated features as either live-action/CGI hybrid films or animated films with photorealistic CGI, the House of Mouse has finally started to see a slowdown on that front, with the 2023 version of "The Little Mermaid" falling well short of the box office heights scaled by the previous re-imaginings of Disney Renaissance classics. Of course, this particular money-printing machine isn't about to break down overnight, as several more re-tellings are making their way down the assembly line as we speak.
Along with live-action takes on "Snow White," "Lilo & Stitch, and "Moana," Disney is also working on "Mufasa: The Lion King," an extension of its 2019 computer-animated (I said what I...

Superman’s incredible 85-year history is defined with intricate detail and unique understanding by those who’ve known him best – the authors, artists, filmmakers, actors and experts tasked with propagating his legend through every medium – in the latest Edward Gross omnibus, Voices From Krypton, published by Nacelle Books. The hardcover book is now available via Amazon, online retailers and popular bookshops, with an e-book edition also available.
Hailed as the most comprehensive examination of Superman in history, Voices From Krypton begins in the mid 1930s with the character’s creation by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and concludes with the announcement of the next big screen adventure, Superman: Legacy. Topics range from Superman’s appearances in different mediums to the individual actors who’ve played the character, from Superman’s Silver Age to present day iterations, and from the subtleties of capturing the Man of Steel to the tentpole moments of his past 85+ years.

As the streaming landscape grows stranger and more unpredictable, it's always good to remember that physical media is superior. I beat this drum every time I have one of these here Blu-ray round-ups, but it's something that bears repeating: streaming comes and goes, physical media is forever. And it looks better, too. Sure, you can stream stuff in 4K these days, but the quality will always be greater with a physical disc.
Our latest Blu-ray round-up gathers together four new releases, all of which are quite different from one another. It's an eclectic bunch to say the least, gang! You have a superhero box office flop, the latest from Wes Anderson, a charming adult-driven comedy from director Nicole Holofcener, and a horror-comedy with a clever premise.

Despite being touted as the “best superhero movie of all time,” The Flash has proven to be a disaster for Warner Bros. The mixed reviews weren’t a huge problem, but the film has become a box-office bomb of the highest order, with some projecting that it could lose the studio as much as $200 million when all is said and done. If you were holding out to watch The Flash at home, you won’t have much longer to wait. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced today that The Flash would be available Digitally on July 18th, followed by a 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 29th.

The story of Superman has been told countless times across different media, from the Zack Snyder and Richard Donner films to multiple animated shows, a CW live-action and much more. So when it came time to tell a new tale of the Man of Steel in Adult Swim’s 10-episode “My Adventures with Superman,” there was one note from the studios that became a guiding light for producers Jake Wyatt and Brendan Clogher, the latter told IndieWire: “Don’t do this stuff the way we’ve seen it before. And the look of the show itself signals that it’s a different take, and to younger audiences, it signals that this is a different version of the character.”
Indeed, while the show feels intrinsically Superman, “My Adventures with Superman” is also unlike any other version of the character. There have been many animated versions of Superman, but “My Adventures with Superman...

Superman fans are seemingly having the time of their lives, as the influx of promising content on the Man of Steel doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. With new exciting series like Superman: Lost in comics ongoing, the recently ended brilliant third season of Superman & Lois, cast updates of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy released a week ago, and now a brand-new Superman animated series My Adventures with Superman getting released, DC seems to be eager to redefine Man of Steel for the general audience.
Although the adventures of the Man of Steel’s brooding emo friend get animated adaptations every once in a while, it has been over two decades since fans got a solo animated series on Superman. In an age rife with cynicism and despair, My Adventures With Superman will definitely aim at making a modern interpretation of the Last Son of Krypton...

This article contains major The Flash spoilers.
Krypton was a beautiful place. Sasha Calle says this briefly, but insistently, during a pivotal scene for her character in The Flash. Prior to this moment, all we’ve really learned about Calle’s Supergirl is that her life has been one of misery and hardship. When she is discovered by Batman (Michael Keaton) and two Barry Allens (both Ezra Miller), she has spent years as a prisoner of the Russian government—a prize to be experimented on and presumably tortured in a locked box hellhole buried somewhere beneath the frozen waste of Siberia.
This Supergirl has every reason to distrust or even disdain human civilization on Earth. And she certainly is open to the idea. After being freed from the Russians and taken (finally) into the morning sunlight above Wayne Manor, she is cold toward the Barrys’ attempts to persuade her to...

Editor’s note: As one of the lucky few who has seen The Flash in its entirety, it’s disappointing that the cameos are starting to leak out with only three weeks to go before it gets released. While the cameo below has been spoiled elsewhere, if you’ve managed to avoid it, don’t read it now. It ruins one of the movie’s biggest and best surprises. You’ve been warned.

Big screen shark attack sequel Meg 2: The Trench will be swimming into theaters on August 4, 2023, and today the film has received its official rating from the MPA.
Like the previous film, Meg 2: The Trench has been rated “PG-13” for…
“Action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.”
Last week’s bloody official trailer suggested that Meg 2 could potentially be going a bit harder on the violence than the disappointing 2018 movie, but there was realistically no way Warner Bros. was going to risk potentially cutting into the sequel’s box office profits with an “R” rating.
The good news? As the trailer suggests, there are a lot of gruesome ways a massive shark can eat people – and other monsters, including a T-Rex this time around! – while still sticking to that PG-13 rating. After all, the three Megalodon sharks in the upcoming movie are so large that they’re literally swallowing humans whole,...

Georgina Campbell, who toplined last year’s surprise horror hit Barbarian, has joined Dakota Fanning to star in New Line’s supernatural thriller The Watchers.

It's been five years since a "Transformers" movie graced our screens with 2018's "Bumblebee," which turned out to be a real winner critically following the massive disappointment of 2017's "The Last Knight." Universal Pictures and Hasbro have no intention of making fans wait that long again. Not only do we have the live-action "Rise of the Beasts" arriving in 2023, but we've also got an as-of-yet untitled animated film focused on the Autobots and Decepticons coming our way in 2024. Now, we finally know what it's going to be about, and it's going to take place on Cybertron.
The information comes to us from the folks at Collider, who recently spoke with longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The producer confirmed that director Josh Cooley, of "Toy Story 4" fame, is indeed making a prequel set on Cybertron, with the film serving as an origin story of sorts for Optimus Prime and Megatron.

In January 2011, Warner Bros. announced (via Deadline) that British actor Henry Cavill had been chosen to star in the studio's latest Superman reboot. At the time, the then-untitled project's director, Zack Snyder, described Cavill as "the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield." Two years later, "Man of Steel" soared into theaters, bringing Kal-El back to the big screen after a seven-year absence and — in the words of Warner Bros. Picture Group president Jeff Robinov — taking a "first step" into a greater DC universe.
In December 2022, Cavill took to Instagram to announce that he would be stepping down as Superman. "My turn to wear the cape has passed," he wrote, "but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards." This optimism belied the true story behind Cavill's Man of Steel, however, who left behind a tarnished legacy of behind-the-scenes drama,...

The recent shake-up at Warner Bros., with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as the new co-chairs of DC Studios, has cast a lot of uncertainty about the future of certain movie actors in the DC Universe. Henry Cavill, for instance, may have been handed his walking papers as Superman, but one actor whose future at the studio seems to be secure, judging by a recent video on social media, is "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa.
There was a time when the superhero Aquaman was nothing more than a "Seinfeld" and "Entourage" joke who got no respect for his power of talking to fish. Momoa and director James Wan helped turned the character around and make him into the face of a burgeoning, billion-dollar franchise. He's got a sequel, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," on the way later this year, but with Gunn, Safran, and Warner Bros. head David Zaslav cleaning house at DC,...

Zack Snyder's 2013 film "Man of Steel" is a retelling of the Superman origin story. As with the 1978 Richard Donner film "Superman," "Man of Steel" begins on the distant planet of Krypton which is nearly due for its apocalyptic destruction. The scientist and scholar Jor-El (Russell Crowe) pleas with his planet's government to do something about it, warning that the end is nigh. They refuse him. At the same time, a military coup is underway at the hands of the violent General Zod (Michael Shannon). Things are not looking good for the planet. Jor-El, wanting to save his infant son from the planet's destruction, loads the baby Kal-El into a rocket and launches him toward an unknown planet called Earth. It's a pretty well-known piece of trivia that Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster loosely modeled their character's story after Moses in the book of Exodus. Instead of being sent down a river,...

In his 2013 film "Man of Steel," director Zack Snyder gave us the most realistic and human representation of Superman yet. Although it's a dark, gritty, and deeply controversial take on the otherwise colorful superhero, the film packs a punch thanks to its emotional complexity, giving us a Superman for the modern age. Henry Cavill is a terrific Superman, and his performance in the film always be memorable, no matter the number of Clark Kents waiting in the pipeline.
"Man of Steel" did a lot of heavy lifting. It was the first Superman movie in seven years after "Superman Returns" tried (and failed) to rejuvenate the franchise, as well as the film that launched the DC Extended Universe (Rip). In keeping with the darker tone of the rest of the film, "Man of Steel" also boasts some of the most intense -- and destructive -- superhero action scenes ever brought to the big screen,...
