Exclusive: Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal have teamed up for their first podcast, Pie. People. Influences. Experiences. The program will start April 2, available on all podcast players and YouTube.
They describe Pie as an intimate parlor conversation exploring the ingredients that “baked up” each guest. It is a respectful, deep dive into nature and nurture — family, faith, friends, hometowns, schooling, mentors, tormentors, etc. It will be the heart-to-heart chat that gives us some authentic insight into each guest’s personal and professional choices — in the arts, athletics, healthcare, politics, etc.
I can testify that between them, this couple can cover a healthy span of topics. A few years back, I convinced Sutter to co-live blog the Emmys for Deadline. Only when I arrived at their home did I learn that Kurt had been so busy as the writer, director and producer of my fave FX series Sons of Anarchy, that...

Kindred will not move forward at FX.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Disney-backed basic-cable network has canceled the drama based on Octavia E. Butler’s 1979 novel about a young Black woman who is pulled back and forth in time. Showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Watchmen) is expected to shop the drama from FX Productions as he envisioned a multiple-season run for the series.
Reps for FX declined to comment.
Kindred debuted Dec. 13, launching all eight episodes of the drama that starred Mallori Johnson as an L.A. woman who is pulled back in time to the 19th century South. Micah Stock, Ryan Kwanten and Gayle Rankin also starred in the drama.
In an interview with THR podcast TV’s Top 5, Jacobs-Jenkins opened up about the “profound impact” Butler’s work had on him and the path to Kindred that started back in 2010. To hear the first-time showrunner tell it, “Obama helped” the show sell,...

Netflix has given a series order to the Western action drama “The Abandons,” which hails from Kurt Sutter.
The show was first reported to be in development at the streaming giant back in November 2021. Netflix has given the show a 10 episode order.
The show’s official logline states: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land.”

Exclusive: Sons of Anarchy and Mayans M.C. co-creator Kurt Sutter has set what he hopes will be his next series. Sutter has made a deal with Netflix to create The Abandons, a potential hourlong that has all the mythology and action of his other show creations, set in the Old West.
It isn’t clear how quickly this all will happen because Sutter has been prepping his feature directorial debut on This Beast, about a trapper’s battle with an elusive beast that is ravaging an 18th century English village. He’s making that one also for Netflix, giving him two projects at the streamer after leaving FX. For Sutter, The Abandons will be the realization of a desire that predates his work on The Shield, Sons, Mayans and The Bastard Executioner.
“I’ve always wanted to do a western, even before Sons, and then Deadwood came out,” Sutter told Deadline.

Exclusive: Kurt Sutter has been set by Netflix to write, direct and produce This Beast, a drama that will mark his feature directorial debut. Blumhouse’s Jason Blum will produce the film along with Carla Hacken, who’ll produce under her Paper Pictures banner.
An 18th century English village is besieged by a mysterious and elusive beast. Dozens of innocents are slaughtered and the mayhem is driven to puritanical heights by religious fanaticism. The impossible task of killing the beast falls to a lowly trapper who promises he can stop the carnage. But for him this hunt is not a professional mission, it’s a deeply personal one. The idea was inspired by The Beast of Gévaudan, a true story about a mysterious beast that terrorized a French village in the 1760s.

Geralt and Ciri’s next stop in The Witcher will give the Child of the Elder Blood a chance to meet some of Geralt’s comrades in Kaer Morhen, and apparently, Netflix has already found the right actors to portray them.
The new live-action adaptation of the White Wolf and his epic tales in the Continent has been the talk of every town since its debut in December, bringing in huge numbers for Netflix and causing a massive surge in the sales of The Witcher saga by Andrej Sapkowski. As such, fans are thirsty for more and want to know what’s next for Geralt and his Child Surprise. Well, considering the fact that the second season is just entering pre-production, there’s not much to share, though according to some reports, the next run will roughly adapt Blood of Elves, which is the first novel after the collection of short stories.

FX has had some fantastically descriptive show titles over the years including Nip/Tuck and The Bastard Executioner, but it has also dabbled in slightly less exotic titles such as The Shield and the forthcoming dystopian drama Y and comedy Dave.
FX Networks and FX Productions Chairman John Landgraf revealed the inner workings of its title creation shop admitting that some of these shows have “relatively generic” names for a reason.

Just over a week after he was fired by FX, purportedly over complaints about his behavior from the show’s cast and crew, “Mayans M.C.” co-creator Kurt Sutter says he went “rogue,” and explained what he believes to be the real reason why he was fired.
In an interview with Deadline published on Tuesday, the writer said that long-simmering tensions with his new corporate bosses at Disney came to a head after he inserted a joke about the company into one of the scripts as a “f— you” to Disney executives:
Here’s what I did wrong on the studio network side, the reason why I had to go away. It all started with a joke. And not a very good one. There was a line in the Season 2 premiere. Ez [Jd Pardo] and Coco [Richard Cabral] were getting off the bus at the school where the drugs were being processed.

Pinewood is pulling out of its studio in Wales, the company’s latest exit from ventures in various locations around the world as it rejiggers its international strategy.
Pinewood said Tuesday that, following discussions with the Welsh government, it had decided to end its agreement to operate, manage and market the studio in Cardiff, the Welsh capital, where productions such as hit show “Sherlock” have been shot. The agreement will expire March 31, 2020.
The announcement comes after the company said over the summer that it was pulling out of studios in Malaysia and Atlanta. It is concentrating instead on its expansion in and around London, where Disney signed a long-term deal last month to occupy most of historic Pinewood Studios and Netflix is setting up a production hub at Shepperton Studios.

“Mayans M.C.” co-creator Kurt Sutter is blaming Disney executives for his exit from the FX drama, saying that he was fired because he “stepped on toes and bruised egos” in dealing with his new corporate bosses.
Sutter’s explanation came in a note to friends and associates on Thursday, according to Deadline, just hours after news broke that he had been fired following multiple complaints about his behavior from “Mayans” cast and crew. In the note, Sutter acknowledged that some of the complaints were merited, but “that’s not why I was fired.”
“The truth is, the suits wanted me gone,” Sutter wrote, assigning blame to executives at Disney whom he clashed with while operating as co-showrunner on the “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff. “I stepped on toes and bruised egos. And in this Disney regime, I’m dangerous to the wholesome brand. And clearly not worth the trouble.”

Kurt Sutter Reveals Backstory Of His Firing From ‘Mayans M.C.’: “Clearly I Ruffled A Few Mouse Ears”
Exclusive: As Deadline reported earlier today, Kurt Sutter was fired from his executive producer post on the FX series Mayans M.C. based on complaints from cast and crew collected by the human resources department of Disney, which now owns FX as well as the studio that produces the Sons of Anarchy spinoff, 20th Century Fox TV/Fox 21 TV Studios.
In a letter Sutter sent today to his inside circle, which was obtained by Deadline, he details the events that led to his dismissal, admitting that “detaching myself so much this season” was a mistake. Sutter also reveals his struggle with the Disney culture that he feels ultimately led to his firing.
“I’ve felt the creative scrutiny of Disney from day one,” he writes (read the full letter below). “Notes on scripts and cuts have been heavy handed. Demanding a level of dumbing-down story and inane PC restraints like I’ve never experienced before.

FX has fired Mayans Mc co-showrunner Kurt Sutter from his role on season 2. Sutter previously announced he would depart the show.
When Disney first acquired Fox, including Fox cable TV network, FX, it was unknown how the image conscious conglomerate would interact with some of its new acquisitions more colorful characters. Now we may have a better idea as FX has dismissed talented, yet intense and mercurial Mayans Mc co-showrunner Kurt Sutter from his showrunning duties.
Variety reports that FX President John Landgraf and Disney TV Studios chairman Dana Walden made the decision directly following an investigation into complaints made about Sutter's behavior on set. There is no word on what said behavior entailed but Sutter is well known to have an at times abrasive and difficult approach to running a TV show. Breaking: This is unfolding in real time. Kurt Sutter has officially exited his involvement in the Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans M.C., and for that matter his long tenure at FX. HBO Max is adapting DC/Vertigo comic book series Dmz as a television pilot, setting Ava DuVernay to direct the pilot.
Dmz, the cynically-prophesizing DC Comics-published Vertigo title depicting a United States left literally divided after a second Civil War, is the next comic book-inspired small screen project embraced by HBO. Indeed, the premium cable channel has brought in a prominent name in Ava DuVernay – who happens to have her hands full with DC film adaptation The New Gods – to direct the pilot.
There's certainly an intriguing and potentially controversial Civil War premise with this project; politically-charged peril that HBO recently opted to avoid by officially cancelling Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss's long-stalled TV project, Confederate, which carried similar themes of an alternate universe in which America has experienced a second Civil War. HBO's retention of this project, however, seems to...

Samie Kim Falvey is poised to be promoted to chairman of Imagine Television as the unit’s longtime leader Francie Calfo eyes a transition to a production deal with the company.
Falvey, an alumnus of ABC and AwesomenessTV, joined Imagine Television as president in October 2017. Calfo left ABC to join Imagine Television as president in July 2010 and was promoted in 2017 to chairman. It’s understood that Imagine Entertainment chiefs Ron Howard and Brian Grazer opted for a change at a time of rapid growth for the company overall but that both are eager to keep Calfo in the family as a producer.

History’s drama series “Knightfall” will return with its second season — which includes Mark Hamill — on Monday, March 25 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt, A + E Studios announced during the Television Critics Association press tour Sunday. But if you can’t wait that long to see Hamill trade in his lightsaber for a Medieval sword, you’re in luck, because History also dropped the Season 2 trailer.
The 2-minute, 16-second video teases Hamill’s debut as Talus, a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran and initiate master who is tasked with preparing the next generation of men to proudly wear the red cross on their chests and become “God’s Executioners.” Based on the trailer, it seems Talus oscillates between giving out sage advice, and punching people.

For the most part, I’ve enjoyed Taylor Kitsch’s work, so I was happy to see that he is set to star in and executive produce a new drama series at HBO.
There’s no title for the series yet, but Kitsch will take on the role of a character named Chris Klug, “a young, family-oriented, drug dealer who catches the wrong end of a bad batch of dope that leaves him in a temporary vegetative state. He discovers that it was no accident and someone close to him was in fact trying to take him out.”
It’s said that the story will be told through flashbacks and Chris’ present-day purgatory. I like the concept behind the series and there’s no doubt that it’s going to be filled with all kinds of frustrations, especially with the main character being in a vegetative state not being able to do anything.

The fourth season of Starz's Outlander pushes Claire and Jamie further into uncharted territory in colonial America and offers a chance to meet several new characters. Some of them, like the nefarious pirate Stephen Bonnet, cannot be trusted. Some, like Jamie's Aunt Jocasta, are trying to keep the peace as best they can in this new land and new set of rules. Some, like Rollo the dog, are just plain adorable.
And then there's John Quincy Myers. First introduced in season four's second episode, "Do No Harm," the character is played by Welsh actor Kyle Rees. He's a jovial, hairy delight who can both educate the new Americans on the proper way to respect the Cherokee tribespeople who already call this land home and serve as another mentor to Jamie's nephew Ian (John Bell), who must be aching to talk to someone who isn't a relative by now. Heading into Mayans M.C., which is something of a sequel/spin-off hybrid, the only question that really matters is whether or not we’re heading into something that actually delivers on the treatment and world-building of Sons of Anarchy. With several years, and The Bastard Executioner, between Kurt Sutter‘s somewhat questionable end to that show and now, a new run with a motorcycle club might go anywhere. Luckily, if the first two episodes are a true indication, Sutter has taken the time to reevaluate the structure, pacing, and plot development in his writing, which means the show kicks off almost as though it had been written at the same time as the third season of SoA, but with a little more experience showing through. Just as important, Sutter built off one of SoA‘s most important devices, having a ton of balls in the air at once. As...

Sons of Anarchy was one of the biggest hits in the history of FX. The outlaw biker club drama’s second season was a classic. Katey Sagal was annually one of the Emmys’ most egregious snubs, and the show had a deep ensemble of actors like Charlie Hunnam, Maggie Siff, Ryan Hurst and Jimmy Smits to elevate what creator Kurt Sutter once described as “bloody pulp fiction with highly complex characters.”
Sons was also given to excess in almost every way: more plot twists, more graphic torture, more minutes per episode.

The History Channel has officially ordered a second season of their medieval drama series Knightfall. That's great news if you were a fan of the first season, but to make things even more interesting, it's been announced that Mark Hamill (Star Wars) is joining the cast!
Knightfall stars Tom Cullen and it goes "inside the medieval politics and warfare of the Knights Templar, the most powerful, wealthy and mysterious military order of the Middle Ages who were entrusted with protecting Christianity’s most precious relics. Knightfall goes deep into the clandestine world of this legendary brotherhood of warrior monks to learn who these knights were, how they lived, and what they died believing."
Hamill will take on the role of a character named Talus, "a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran of the Crusades, who survived captivity for ten years in the Holy Land and is tasked with training the new initiates to the Order.

Kurt Sutter has reasons for holding off on revisiting the “Sons of Anarchy” franchise for almost 4 years. And no, it wasn’t just because he wanted to make time for his next FX series, which didn’t fair so well.
“Yeah, I planned on ‘The Bastard Executioner’ bombing and only lasting a season,” the FX series’ creator joked during the Television Critics Association press tour Friday, when asked if he planned out the timeline between the end of the Charlie Hunnam-led drama and the debut of its upcoming spinoff “Mayans M.C.” “All part of my big plan.”
“No, no,” he continued. “You know, at Season 5, 6 or 7 [of ‘Sons of Anarchy’] we knew we wanted to continue the IP. We knew this was an idea we liked. Both [FX CEO] John Landgraf and myself knew that we didn’t want to do it on the heels of ‘Sons’ and sort of cannibalize the IP.

It’s been more than three years since the end of “Sons of Anarchy,” but the next chapter is right around the corner. FX just released the first extended look at (and release date for) “Mayans Mc,” the latest series set in the same motorcycle club world as the network’s runaway hit.
Shifting its focus from Northern California to the state’s southern border, this new offshoot stars J.D. Pardo as Ez Reyes, a potential member of the group that gives the show its title. Wrestling with his tragic family history, Ez’s path brings him in conflict with his father Felipe (Edward James Olmos).
If that arc sounds vaguely familiar, “Mayans Mc” comes from co-writer and director Kurt Sutter, who created “Sons of Anarchy.” It’s his first return to TV since the fall 2015 cancellation of his previous series “The Bastard Executioner.”
