Distributor Neon seems to have had the marketing department working overtime to promote the July 12th theatrical release date of Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins. We’ve seen a whole lot of cryptic teasers and posters for this movie, mostly accompanied by strange quotes… but today a trailer has made its way online that takes a more traditional approach to promoting the film, giving us an idea of how the story plays and spending some time setting up the lead character, played by Maika Monroe of It Follows and The Guest. You can check it out in the embed above.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins has been working with Nicolas Cage on a new horror project called Longlegs, and now he has just set up the horror project he’ll be moving on to when Longlegs is all wrapped up: an adaptation of the Stephen King short story The Monkey! Theo James of The White Lotus has already signed on to star in the film, which is being produced by genre regular James Wan.
Perkins will be directing The Monkey from his own screenplay. The film will tell the following story: When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years.

What did you do during the pandemic? If you’re a filmmaker with horror tendencies, you made a lo-fi horror film, it seems. That’s what Ben Wheatley did with “In The Earth,” same with filmmaking duo Nick Simon and writer/actor Luke Baine (“The Girl in the Photographs“), and it’s also what “District 9” and “Chappie” director Neill Blomkamp did too with his “free time.” The result is “Demonic,” a horror-thriller about unleashing demons and supernatural forces between family members.

As the pandemic lockdown changes the landscape of film and TV, many are shifting the way they tell stories — and a lot of that is shooting remotely. Filmmaker Nick Simon has done exactly that with the film Untitled Horror Movie which recently completed principal photography.
Directed by Simon, who co-wrote it with Luke Baines, the comedy-horror was shot entirely during lockdown with the entire writing, pre-production, and filming process taking place remotely. Set on computer screens and found footage style content, the movie follows six actors who decide to shoot their own horror movie as their hit TV show is on the brink of cancellation. In their search for a plot, they unintentionally summon a spirit with an affinity for violence, who starts picking them off one by one.
Baines also stars alongside Claire Holt, Darren Barnet, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Katherine McNamara and Timothy Granaderos (13 Reasons Why). The cast also features Kal Penn, Kevin Daniels, and Sohm Kapila.
“I’ve always believed that film should be a collaborative art form, and I don’t think there’s a truer example than with this picture,” said Simon, who was mentored by Wes Craven. “The actors did everything from lighting themselves — guided by our incredible Dp, Kevin Duggin — to recording their own sound and doing their own hair and makeup. As crazy as that could have been, it was easily one of the most enjoyable experiences in my professional life. It was one of those once in a lifetime moments when everything aligns at the exact right time.”
The film comes from Sundance and SXSW Grand Jury Award-winning producer Bronwyn Cornelius and Marina Stabile. Randy Sinquefield’s Spectrum Studios financed the picture. CAA Media Finance represents the film’s worldwide distribution rights.

After bringing alligators to the big screen in Crawl, Alexandre Aja will next direct a new haunted house movie that will incorporate its audience into its storytelling.
According to Collider, Aja will helm an untitled haunted house movie for Amblin Partners, based on an idea by Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard, the latter of whom will also write the script along with Nick Simon (The Girl in the Photographs) and Aja.
Collider describes the film as a "choose-your-own-adventure-style horror movie" in which audience members will vote on the decisions they'd like characters to make using an app on their phone, resulting in multiple endings and narratives for viewers to experience. Amblin is teaming up with Kino Industries’ CtrlMovie technology to create the new haunted house movie.

Luke Baines has been cast in the recurring role of Jonathan Morgenstern, the main villain in the remaining episodes of the third and final season of Freeform’s fantasy drama series Shadowhunters.
Previously hiding behind the identify of Sebastian Verlac, played by Will Tudor, Baines’ character was reborn at the end of the spring finale and is the true form of Clary’s (Katherine McNamara) brother. Jonathan’s return will present Clary and the Shadowhunters with a new level of evil that they can’t even imagine.
It was a lingering question following the spring finale as to who would play the character. Executive producers had discussed in previous interviews that Tudor would not be playing Jonathan.
Based on the Mortal Instruments novels, the fantasy drama will end its run in 2019 with a 12-episode season. The current third season is based on the fourth and fifth books in the series.

Directed by Nick Simon (Removal, The Girl in The Photographs) and starring Steve Guttenberg, it’s the sequel to Syfy creature feature Lavalantula.
Simon, known more for his darker themed horror thrillers wanted to do a comedy, and told MoreHorror that "I really have a strong love for Corman and Troma films and I kind of always wanted to do one. We...

When Wes Craven passed away back in August of last year, The Girl in the Photographs instantly went from a film that had been flying under the radars of horror fans to one that was both immediately bittersweet as well as hotly-anticipated. Craven, shortly before his passing, executive produced the independent effort, and it will forever be the final film to bear his name. A sobering and depressing thought, regardless of the movie’s quality – which is of course what we’re here to talk about today.

Naturally being able to rely on your intuition to help guide you to make the right choices and form meaningful connections is a powerful personality trait some people possess that can greatly empower their lives. But for those people who lack the ability to trust their instincts, their lives unfortunately won’t leave them feeling fulfilled. The meaningful examination into both types of people is grippingly presented in the new horror film, ‘The Girl in the Photographs,’ which was directed by Nick Simon, who also co-wrote the script with Robert Morast and Osgood Perkins. The crime thriller, which was distributed into select theaters and on VOD this weekend by Vertical Entertainment, [ Read More ]

In the opening scene of The Girl in the Photographs - an indie slasher that’s notoriously Wes Craven’s very last film credit -, we see two girls walking out of a movie theater after watching a horror movie. One of them hated it while the other seems to be a fan of the genre as she values that, at least, one of the death scenes was really good. This is certainly an indication that these characters have just experienced an average slasher film, in which the kills are probably the only attraction. The Girl in the Photographs itself tries not to be that plain slasher as it quickly establishes some concepts beyond the violent acts. However, it’s one of those cases with just too many...

Poor Janet (Katharine Isabelle). She’s just finished seeing a bad movie with a friend, but before she gets the chance to wash the cinematic stank from her eyes she’s attacked and abducted by a beer-bellied psychopath in a mask. She’s killed and disposed of but not before a photo of her lifeless body is taken for posterity. Well, posterity and for the purpose of taunting a local checkout girl named Colleen (Claudia Lee). It’s not the first picture she finds, and it won’t be the last, but without proof of an actual crime the sheriff (Mitch Pileggi) tell her there’s nothing they can do. He surmises it’s little more than a prank, and we’d probably wonder if his theory was correct if it weren’t for the fact that we’d already been shown the two killers in action. But The Girl in the Photographs is a not a...

I don’t like speaking ill of the dead, especially icons who’ve defined an entire genre, but name-dropping is a marketing tactic best left for the living. Director Nick Simon’s newest feature film is titled The Girl In The Photographs and I honestly believe I see Wes Craven’s name pop up in connection with this film more than Simon’s. Naturally, with Craven having passed in August of 2015, he’s likely to have had little [if anything] to do with the marketing of this movie, but it would certainly seem like he’s calling the shots from the gave.
Sadly, The Girl In The Photographs is not the shining example of groundbreaking genre filmmaking for which the legendary master posthumously deserves credit. “The Girl in the Photographs” stars Miranda Rae Mayo and Kenny Wormald talked about working on a film executive produced by horror legend Wes Craven in the latest episode of TheWrap’s Drinking With the Stars. “He was so great at not doing the obvious, cheap shot when it comes to horror. He was really great about being creative, and creating situations that are what they are and happen to be terrifying,” Mayo told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell. “He loved Nick and they had a relationship prior to this film, and when they got the chance to make the film,...

Nick Simon‘s The Girl in the Photographs seems to be a story reverse-engineered from its final image — which, for a low-budget horror film, is an effective one. No spoilers here, and it wouldn’t matter if there were. By that point, it’s too little and far too late to redeem the film after we’ve been subjected to recycled horror tropes, which predictably clunk their way toward an unsettling final moment. Perhaps this should have been a short and not a ponderous, forgettable feature. In a sense, it’s a horror picture for the selfie generation — fitting, as the narrative is utterly vapid and shallow.
Colleen (Claudia Lee), a South Dakota waitress, begins finding posed photographs of murdered women left at the coffee shop where she works, uncertain if they’re real or staged. They indeed are: the photographers are a pair of deranged backwoods boys who lock...

Last September, TheWrap’s list of breakout talent at the Toronto International Film Festival included the female cast of Nick Simon’s slasher movie “The Girl in the Photographs,” the final film to boast the involvement of horror icon Wes Craven. Little did we know, however, that it would be the the guy behind the photographs, a young actor named Luke Baines, who would leave the strongest impression as the film’s primary villain — and no, that isn’t a spoiler. “It’s not a secret and it was never meant to be,” Baines hold TheWrap as “The Girl in the Photographs” hits theaters.

[Editor's Note: Quiet Earth's European editor ruminates on what Wes Craven's final production says about the state of visual arts and intellectual property while suffering through it]
The Girl in the Photographs mainly deals with obsolescence in the visual arts. There are a few anecdotal gorings and flayings, but that's expected from something labelled as "horror" and not particularly relevant.
The pitch doesn't make a whole lot of sense and goes roughly along these lines: the antagonist, of the serial killer persuasion, sends pictures of his work to a random girl. A narcissistic photograph [Continued ...]...

I saw this cool trailer for a film today I've heard literally nothing about (which is rare). The Girl In The Photographs has a cool trailer, Kal Penn in a lead role, and is Wes Craven's final film credit in the industry as executive producer. You would think with the way Hollywood operates that would immediately propel it into the public eye!
The trailer itself reminds me of old school horror...in a good way! I like Penn being creepy, as weird as that is to say! See the trailer below and check out The Girl In The Photographs in theaters and VOD April 1st!
