Following the announcement of its competition, Next, New Frontier, premieres, midnight, kids, spotlight and special events slates, Sundance rounds out its slate with a list of the shorts to be shown during the festival. Some quick highlights: Come Swim, Kristen Stewart’s first narrative short; Fish Story, the new short by documentary filmmaker Charlie Lyne (Beyond Clueless), who’s also been a contributor to Filmmaker; and a new film from Jim Cummings, winner of last year’s Short Film Grand Jury Prize for Thunder Road. He returns with The Robbery, whose one-line synopsis is unimprovable: “Crystal robs a liquor store—it goes pretty Ok.” U.S. Narrative Short Films American Paradise / […]...

The people behind the releases of three of 2015’s standout British film camapigns discussed their processes at the Screen Film Summit today (Dec 10)
Hugh Spearing, head of marketing at Studiocanal, presented Legend, which stars Tom Hardy as the East End’s notorious gangster twins Ronald and Reggie Kray.

This short film by Charlie Lyne (whose zippy, highly enjoyable essay/compilation film about teen movies, Beyond Clueless, is still available on Netflix Instant) tells the story of Rolfe Kanofsky, a pioneer who maybe got scalped. Barely out of high school, Kanofsky made a meta-reflexive horror film, There’s Nothing Out There, that bears a suspicious relationship to Scream. Did Wes Craven’s son having seen it have anything to do with it? Whatever the case, Copycat is a fun watch; bonus points for making the whole thing plausibly seem as if it were being watched on a beaten-up VHS.

Read More: Exclusive: The Poster for SXSW Doc 'Beyond Clueless,' About Hollywood Coming-of-Age Classics For all its perpetual popularity and continued reverence, Amy Heckerling's high school-set classic "Clueless" almost didn't happen — or, at the very least, didn't happen in the way most people (including Heckerling herself) expected it to. Originally imagined as a Fox television show, the project eventually became a Fox feature, before being punted to Paramount in the interest of a better budget. When the film did arrive in theaters in July of 1995, it was a major hit that boasted a cast filled with up-and-comers that went on to make their mark on Hollywood (look no further than this week's big Marvel release, "Ant-Man," starring "Clueless" so-called Baldwin Paul Rudd in one of his breakout roles). Despite the film's somewhat fraught journey to the big screen, the final product doesn’t hint at much upheaval or strife,...

Charlie Lyne, the filmmaker behind teen movies documentary Beyond Clueless, is to turn his attention to horror for the BBC.
Fear Itself (working title) will be built from material spanning more than 100 years of horror cinema and reunites Lyne with Beyond Clueless producers Catherine Bray and Anthony Ing.
As well as studying the genre, which dates back to the beginning of film, Lyne will attempt to subvert the traditional formalities of the arts documentary to create a movie every bit as scary as the films at its centre.
A statement from the BBC explained: “Our journey through horror will be led not by historical chronology, but by the physical experience of fear within the human brain.

There’s little love lost for Kim Longinotto’s slapdash documentary montage
Valentine’s Day is upon us, but the release of this film by Kim Longinotto is a disappointing and uninteresting way of marking that fact. It is a miscellaneous montage of film clips from the past century, accompanied by music from Richard Hawley, on the vague subject of … love. There are archive fragments from documentaries, romances, and grisly and puritanical sex-education films (of the kind anthologised by the BFI in its boxset The Joy of Sex Education). There are bits from the 1929 silent movie Piccadilly starring Anna May Wong, and from My Beautiful Laundrette. It seems as if anything and everything could have been included. But the selections and juxtapositions are neither interesting nor insightful – certainly not compared to, say, Julien Temple’s recent essay London: The Modern Babylon or Charlie Lyne’s study of teen movies, Beyond Clueless.

Another week, another Filmcast. In the T & C’s most action packed episode of the year so far, Liam (Dom’s still on hiatus, but will be back next week – promise) is joined by Dr. Lindsay Hallam (Lecturer in Film at the University of East London), David James (London City Nights) and Matthew Lee (Screen Robot) to discuss an exhaustive and exhausting week at the movies.
Kicking off with a review of Big Hero 6, the gang then segue into a discussion of Julius Avery’s pretty bonkers Son of a Gun – including an exclusive interview with the man himself. Then it’s an all-out run through the rest of the UK’s big releases, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s kind of incomprehensible but kind of great Inherent Vice taking precedent before reviews of Beyond Clueless and a roundtable discussion of the spectacularly silly Kingsman: The Secret Service polish the show off.

★★★★☆ As something of a voice of a modern cinema-going generation, British multimedia wunderkind Charlie Lyne has forged a career out of thoughtful irreverence, crossing multiple platforms to make his contemporary and pop culture-savvy voice heard. Serving as critic and journalist for both The Guardian and his own blog Ultra Culture - which also sidelines in twinning film premières with a keg and a sing-song, Lyne now makes the somewhat inevitable leap to filmmaking with his debut Beyond Clueless (2014), a documentary that takes an extensive look at the decade-long, seminal years of the teen movie sub-genre.

Charlie Lyne's documentary Beyond Clueless harks back to the classic teen movies that shaped the '90s.
Featuring narration from The Craft's Fairuza Balk (and with clips of Robin Tunney, Devon Sawa and co), it made us feel a sudden pang of nostalgia and sent us on our own trip down memory lane to find out where they - and the rest of the '90s teen movie crew - are now.
So, here are 11 stars from some of our favourite '90s teen movies, and what they've gone on to do since:
1. Devon Sawa - Idle Hands (1999)
Dreamy Devon Sawa starred as lazy stoner Anton Tobias - who turns mass murderer after his hand becomes possessed - in the horror comedy Idle Hands.
He went on to play teenage prophet of doom Alex Browning in Final Destination (2000), and appeared as similarly unstable Stan in Eminem's controversial music...

A densely-packed dive into the world of teen movies from '90s to present, documentary Beyond Clueless will hit all the right notes for those with an affinity for Cher Horowitz, Cady Heron and their spiritual brothers and sisters.
The Kickstarter-backed project, directed by Ultra Culture founder Charlie Lyne, ditches the conventional talking heads approach to get under the skin of the genre and examine how they relate to the adolescent audiences who hoover them up.
Narrating it all is Fairuza Balk, star of '90s favourite The Craft, lending her husky tones to guide us through a maze of high school, raging hormones and rites of passage tales. Footage from north of 200 films are included, with Lyne spreading into subgenres like horror (Idle Hands,...

UK cinema in 2015 has plenty to recommend it. Here are 36 UK films of all genres to look forward to this year…
Dig past the litterfall of Kray Brothers biopics and tales of nubile teens on camping trips gone wrong, and you’ll unearth plenty for the UK film industry to boast about in 2015. From sci-fi romps and thrillers like Robot Overlords and Ex Machina to dramas like High-Rise, comedies like War On Everyone, spy flicks like Spectre and kids’ films like Bill, there’s no shortage of inventive, highly promising cinema coming from these isles.
We’ve included a few choice co-productions in 2015’s pick of the year’s most interesting-looking pictures, which bolsters our list in both size and breadth (and mostly means we Brits can claim partial credit for ace-sounding dystopian flick The Lobster).
In alphabetical order then, here are the 36 UK (or UK-ish) movies we’re excited about seeing this year…...

"Vibrant, funny, and subversive." Remember all those movies you were obsessed with in high school? All those classic teenage comedies, coming-of-age dramas, telling stories of high school burn outs and maligned prom queens. Young filmmaker Charlie Lyne made a documentary called Beyond Clueless, presenting a "PhD on the history of high school cinema" featuring a "moody and evocative score" by the band Summer Camp, which can be heard briefly in the trailer. Our friends at Empire have unveiled the first poster and it caught our eye. For marketing made up entirely with their own material, no footage, this is excellent work. I'm very curious to check out the doc and many will likely feel the same after taking a look at the film below. Here's the UK trailer + quad poster for Charlie Lyne's documentary Beyond Clueless, debuted via Empire: Click on the image above for high res showing all...

Guardian contributor, Ultracultist and now debut filmmaker, Charlie Lyne has made a documentary about teen movies' subtext, no less, and here is an exclusive poster to prove it. Its name? Beyond Clueless. Because of Clueless, you see? Oh, forget it.The trailer below should give you a decent sense of the tone of the piece, which is less talking-heads-talking-about-the-making-of-the-films and more could-Cruel-Intentions-3-be-about-something-more-than-making-a-quick-buck?, all narrated by The Waterboy's Fairuza Balk.Beyond Clueless is out in UK cinemas on January 23, so be sure to check it out for in-depth analysis on the magical art of getting a girl to take off her glasses to reveal that she is somehow more attractive because of it it, as well as an explanation as to why everyone drinks from those red cups at house parties, no matter what.

The screenings will include Q&As and themed frat parties and will be followed by another self-funded release on January 23 that will include live-scored screenings and teen movie double-bills.

As previously reported by my HitFix colleagues, 2014’s fall festivals represent something of a battle royale for various heavyweight Oscar hopefuls. The oldest fest in the big four, venerable Venice, is up against younger North American counterparts Toronto, Telluride and New York in the perennial fight to deliver a truly memorable Competition. Which films will be left standing once the critics have had their way with them? Contenders hoping to emerge victorious from La Biennale’s royal rumble include Alejandro González Iñárritu’s opening nighter "Birdman" starring Michael Keaton, David Gordon Green’s Al Pacino vehicle "Manglehorn" and Andrew Garfield vs Michael Shannon in Ramin Bahrani’s real estate showdown "99 Homes." As far as awards season goes, for me the big hitter to beat from Cannes is "Foxcatcher," an extraordinary and illuminating piece of filmmaking from Bennett Miller, a director I’ve not been personally persuaded by before now. In the documentary category,...

[Amir, our Canadian correspondent, is reporting on The Hot Docs Film Festival which wrapped Sunday. Reviews will continue this week.]
In the history of cinema, there are few genres that receive as little acclaim or critical analysis as the high school film does. British critic Charlie Lyne's (of Ultra Culture blog fame) visual essay is therefore a treasure for enthusiasts of recent film history. In Beyond Clueless, he examines teenage characters in a wide variety of films produced between 1996 and 2004. Little of the titular film is shown, though its influence over the films that came after it looms large. From The Craft to Mean Girls, from The Faculty to Rules of Attraction, via Spider-man, Final Destination and everything in between, the high school student is analyzed through the tumultuous process of entering that period of adolescence and exiting it unscathed and transformed.
Beyond Clueless itself takes on the narrative arc of a teen movie. Divided in five chapters that are designed to embody the high school experience, it begins...

For his documentary Beyond Clueless, a thematic walk through teen films during an era that ranged from Clueless (1995) to Mean Girls (2004), director Charlie Lyne had to watch "over 300" films. More teen films were produced in that particular era than before or since, he argues, and an entire generation grew up on them — their nostalgia now fuels revivals and reunions galore. (And those are just the ones you remember.) Along with the Jawbreakers and the She's All Thats, there are a slew of interesting and "forgotten" titles from those years. Here are a few of Lyne's favorites.Black and White (2000) Notorious sleazeball director James Toback has always had a fascination with teenagers (both onscreen and off, if you believe the Gawker articles), but his only true teen movie is Black and White, or at least the parts of Black and White that aren't just a love letter to...

Position yourself as 'The New Someone'
With big names such as American Hustle's David O Russell now churning out work like overactive indie photocopiers, it can be hard to convince audiences that a new film from Joe Bloggs is worth their time. For this reason, it's vital that you shed any hopes of auteurdom and instead follow dutifully in the footsteps of an existing great. Do you have a passing interest in nature? Why, you must be the new Malick. Is your film a heartwarming tale of family reunion? Howdy, new Spielberg. At the very least, have all your actors shout their dialogue into each other's faces and become the new David O Russell.

Charlie Lyne's passionate but uncertain analysis of the high-school genre has the air of a wildlife documentary
• More SXSW reviews here
Guardian Guide contributor Charlie Lyne navigates the maze of high school with a Kickstarted film essay that's rich in theory, packed with source material, but a bit uncertain in tone.
Presented with the air of a wildlife documentary, Beyond Clueless offers an analytical overview of the Us teen as portrayed in the movies of the late 90s and early 00s. It's narrated by Fairuza Balk, one of a clutch of sort-of stars who came to represent the genre. The soundtrack contains new material from British indie band Summer Camp, who support Lyne's montages of clips from some 270 teen movies with a richly sinister backing track.
The film starts at the beginning of multiple school days. Lyne cuts together footage of buses pulling up in the parking lot, American flags flapping in the breeze.

Films like "Clueless" and "Mean Girls" are fixtures in our cultural consciousness -- which is why the documentary "Beyond Clueless," Charlie Lyne's directorial debut, is an exploration of the teen movie in all its Hollywood forms. The film, which is narrated by actress Fairuza Balk, premieres at SXSW today, March 10th, at 7:00pm at the Topfer Theatre at Zach. Here's the festival's description: "Beyond Clueless" is a dizzying journey into the mind, body and soul of the teen movie, as seen through the eyes of over 200 modern coming-of-age classics. Part adolescent fever dream, part roving visual essay, the film puts Hollywood's high school under the microscope on a quest to lay bare the genre's beating heart. Is "The Craft" the ultimate teenage survival guide? Can the little-seen Devon Sawa vehicle "Idle Hands" shine a light on the horrors of pubescence? And what's really going on beneath the skin...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

The feature film lineup for the SXSW 2014 Film Festival, held March 7-15, was announced today. This year's film festival and conference will include some new aspects -- an "Episodic" series made up of upcoming TV projects and SxSports -- but will keep focus on features (and shorts, although that lineup is released next week).
Some of the standouts I noticed in this year's programming: Now-Austinite David Gordon Green's Joe, the North American premiere of Diego Luna's Cesar Chavez (trailer), Beyond Clueless (a celebration of the teen movie genre narrated by Fairuza Balk), the American premiere of Alejandro Jodorowsky's autobiographical The Dance of Reality, and as previously announced, the world premiere of the Veronica Mars movie (from Austin's own Rob Thomas).
