Early during Iffr, adventurous Danish sales agent LevelK has snapped up world rights to New Zealand film Fantail, a premiere in the Bright Future section at Rotterdam.
LevelK will be working with producers Yes Please Films Ltd & Curious Film Ltd, on the project, produced by Sarah Cook.
Fantail is Curtis Vowell’s first feature. It is scripted by newcomer Sophie Henderson who also takes on the lead role

The International Film Festival Rotterdam has unveiled the selections for its Bright Future and Spectrum programmes (list of premiere titles below).
Across both sections there are 37 world premieres.
Bright Future is comprised of 63 films, all first and second features. Bright Future includes five films supported by the Hubert Bals Fund, including Carlos Armella’s Las voces.
Five films from Bright Future will compete in the Big Screen Award Competition, including telepathic dwarf thriller La distancia by Sergio Caballero; and Riad Sattouf’s Jacky au royaume des filles starring Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Other notable seelctions include Burrowing director Henrik Helstrom’s second feature The Quiet Roar, about a dying woman who reconnects with her past through an acid trip.
Spectrum, focusing on artistic and experimental cinema, includes 69 films, including three supported by the Hubert Bals Fund. Five Spectrum Films, including Jos de Putter’s See No Evil and Oxana Bychkova’s Another...

Produced under the auspices of New Zealand's low budget Escalator film support scheme, director Curtis Vowell and writer / star Sophie Henderson looked to have cooked up something quite compelling with their feature film Fantail.Tania thinks she's Maori. She works the graveyard shift at Horizon to save money to take her brother Pi to Surfers. But one night a cheeky little bird ruins everything and Tania pays the ultimate price for being a hero.A bit of a cultural identity social drama, a bit of a romance, the obviously quality cast, firm direction, and a willingness to go dark make this one worth taking a look at.
