Solid Sci-fi Series
Supermanfan-1316 May 2024
I never played the Halo games so I didn't really know what to expect but I have to say I really liked it. First off, Pablo Schreiber is such an underrated actor and does an excellent job in almost everything he does and he's great as the lead here. It seems that most of the people who don't like it is because it's not exactly like the video game. These shows need to be adapted for tv so there going to be a little different. Most people don't read the source material and don't care but I guess some of the ones who do know it do mind. As long as it's entertaining I've never cared if they change it up a little. This story is well written, the acting is good, and there's plenty of action and drama to keep you interested throughout the series. I absolutely recommend this to anyone who's a fan of sci-fi or action.

Looking forward to seeing more
Rob133114 May 2024
I actually enjoyed Halo a lot more than I thought I would. It's based off a video game about an enhanced super soldier they call Master Chief and his team as they defend humanity from Aliens and it takes place in the 26th Century. The special effects stand out as you can tell they put a lot of money into the show. It may start a little slow for some while it builds it world and it's characters but I found it extremely entertaining. It may get a little complicated for some of you who don't pay close attention though. I enjoyed this show so much that I binged the entire first two seasons over a weekend so I'm really looking forward to them making a few more seasons.

As shows go, this had me mostly entertained throughout, in thought as good sci-fi should
I love "Halo". I find it entertaining, well made in most aspects. As someone said, Pablo Schreiber is greatly underrated and I think that's owed to his masculine hero image, but he can act, I can tell you that. Ironically, even for a character that's supposed to be a silent super-soldier devoid of our "weaknesses", just following orders supposedly -- Schreiber's Master Chief is both a joy and enigma to watch. His mannerisms are on point and he's able to communicate a lot of confliction and other feelings just with his face. Great casting there! The other Spartans are well-cast too. Natasha Culzac starts a bit in the shadows but there's an episode in the second season where she is given enough to show her range as an actress, and her performance had me in awe. Kate Kennedy is consistently captivating on screen, it seems the more she's given to work with the better the scene with her in it. Natasha McElhone is, in some scenes, in a league of her own, which befits an actress of her renomé. But it's a compliment to Halo that the rest of the cast isn't far behind in terms of acting prowess, the show's so much better for it.

Halo doesn't fumble on the CGI. The Covenant are done masterfully, it's all really impressive, at least for a TV show. It's also done with finesse. When plasma bolts are flying, I have to say I am not getting tired of it. All the better stuff's not blown up all the time, the show has commendable pacing switching between meaningful engaging conversations and the rare battle which too seems to be put in the right place.

On a rare occasion, I feel Halo falls into cookie cutter villain territory, but it recovers quickly enough as the more complex elements of the plot are woven back in and get back into front seat.

I find the plot to be complex enough to be thoroughly entertaining.

Halo is a package. You may not vibe with all of it all the time, but it's been long I've had such a pleasure watching a TV show. There's marvelous, ingenous sci-fi out there, and while Halo could be better, I think it deserves my score. It had a tall order to fill -- please the gaming fan base and what not -- but it won't be forgotten by me the way I forget a lot of other stuff I discover and put away.

I hope Halo has a long run on television and I can only hope the actors are given great material to show off their range. It's not often that so much of the cast is so consistenly good, even the chemistry, for the most part(!), works to the cast's advantage.

S2 took it to another level
Halo was so good that I may watch it again. I went into it with some pretty high expectations. I kind of knew the story a little from playing the game when I was a kid but if that didn't sell me on it then the trailers did because it made the show look great. Even of you know absolutely nothing about the story or game that's ok because the show does a pretty good job explaining the story to you in the beginning and then setting up their world. I liked season one a lot but season 2 just took it another level. It was so good that I raised my rating from an 8 to a 10, not because I actually think it's a 10 but some of the reviews are mad because it's not exactly like the game so the gave it ridiculously low scores so I'm just trying to even it out. I hope this show continues to trend in the right direction because of it does season 3 is going to be insane.

Believe
TICSTUDIOSLLC24 April 2024
Halo (TV Series) is the long awaited live action project that's been teased since 2006 first in the hands of Peter Jackson. Years later we have a show produced by Paramount+ and the series' first season dropped in 2022. Halo (TV Series) had just concluded its second season in 2024.

The story of Halo (TV Series) has retconned several aspects of the games. The story of the series is that humanity is at war with an alien allegiance known as The Covenant and both sides will do anything to win. There are themes of loyalty, betrayal, mistrust, deceit, and duty in the show.

Many of the narratives in the games have been altered to fit a more generalized story, but the look and feel of the series is very close to games. The costumes, sets and themes are all still very Halo.

The biggest controversy in the whole series is the lack of Master Chief's helmet. In Season 1 Master Chief has his helmet off nearly the entire season. In Season 2 Master Chief has his armor removed for most of the season. This is extremely offensive to fans as the helmet represents the Chief and taking his armor away is like taking away his identity. The actor Pablo Schreiber portrays Master Chief as an angst ridden shell. Shreiber's performance tries to give Master Chief lots of anger and mistrust, yet very naive at first. I felt given the script Shreiber gave a good performance and physically he looks the part.

The action in the show is very good. Each fight in the whole series had me hooting on the edge of my seat. The show opens with one of the best battles in the two seasons. The first season has some great action but not that much of it. Season 2 however, has action almost every episode and really steps it up a notch. There's close quarter combat, medium range combat, sniper range combat, ground scale battles and space battles. The choreography is really great stuff and very fluid in direction. I felt when the show had Spartans in battle the series really shined.

The writing in this show took a more anti authority approach, showing the military force UNSC as the ultimate bad guy. Master Chief is constantly battling his own belief as a soldier and what it means to be a Spartan. There's civilians and rebels shown in the series to portray the mistrust in government and really sells that war is propaganda. The tone is different than the games, but it still is consistent with the themes in the Halo universe. War is hell and the military will use all its power to win.

I felt this series does a decent job, but it had the weight of more than a decade of anticipation to live up to. If this series had come out sooner I think it would have been much better received. The action is great and the look of the show is extremely close to the visuals in the games. The story was retconned to have a more general appeal. The tone of the story was written to be more anti establishment rather than a unified army against a common enemy. I still recommend this show to anyone who enjoys sci-fi and any Halo fan.

Flood!!!
xycbmxjk16 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Did anyone else freak out when she starting getting all sweaty and you realized it was the flood! This shows does an amazing job going beyond the game and instead of demolishing its legacy, builds of it and turns it into something even deeper. Season 2 topped season 1 and I hope season 3 does the same with the flooooood!! Nerding out ova heeeeere! Aha. But honestly props to the actors and actresses for doing such a good job, and to anyone hating on this show or writing bad reviews, you never truly loved the game growing up as a child. Because I did and I love every bit of this series. Also why are you coming to write a bad review? Who hurt you? Aha.

Things converge together - slowly but in the right way
pontram10 March 2024
I am not a Halo Game aficionado. But I watched a few Game Videos, where the cinematic parts of the games are put together.

That said, I think that what this production does is simply the only way to make a consistent SciFi show for a broader audience and not a pure fan-service.

Its decision to show us the human flesh and bone behind the Helmet, how John thinks and how he feels, how vulnerable he is when not behind his armor, how broken as a human, that is the biggest strength of the show from the first season on, and makes this a good experience. Pablo Schreiber is clearly the right choice for this part. Him always behind the Mask, always in combat, would do the show no good.

The Halo TV series can stand for its own as a beautiful, high-level/high-budget modern Space Opera, with the characters and within the world of Halo.

The show does tell a different story than the games, yes. But that is another advantage. If not, it would be just a cinematic recap.

It is, I give that to the critics, not always consistent and perfect. Season one spent too much time on some side-stories and on the new character Kwan, who is kind of annoying to many of the audience, and seems to be hated. But Kwan seems to have a special purpose in connecting the other characters and a big part of the story arc.

But season two is now focused on converging many threads. It is more densely packed and had a breathtaking episode 4, a bit too slow episode 5, in is again gaining momentum in episode 6.

Some voices here write something like "desecration", or even "heresy", as if Halo were some holy book that has to be worshiped. But it is a game with a story and not an Epos that defines mankinds' culture. Some talented people at a gaming company set it up to make it work for players, and now other talented people do the same for the screen. And they do good.

Would be perfect if they would get ride of Kwan
reddington-9306130 May 2023
Enjoying the show, the action, the actors, even the Forerunner tech (game departures aside), but OMG for the love of sanity can someone please shoot Kwan?!

It's like every time I'm getting into the story I'm suddenly dealing with a Rey Palpatine wanna be who is more fixated on her dusty rock tribe's little rebellion than the incredibly advanced aliens that are raining from the sky.

That aside, the rest of the show has been really good si-fi fun. Pretty well paced story wise, just enough character development without anything overshadowing the fact that this is a story about enhanced human super soldiers vs. Aliens.

Absolutely amazing
jesseparncutt18 May 2024
At first I was unhappy it didn't follow the lore exactly, but I feel without being able to play it some changes had to be made to make it more digestible and interesting for viewer. I'm extremely impressed with this show and am looking forward to seeing more.

This is the best show iv seen this year. The acting is incredible, they did a great job casting master chief and showing how impressive his presence can be for the other characters in the show. Seeing all of the vehicles and characters from the games brought on so much nostalgia. I'm actually thankful this show was made, I can now share the story of halo with people like my father who never played the game.

Well done.

Episode 7 is easily the worst of the series. 50 minutes and I'm waiting for the story to progress, but instead we are treated to a hallucination trip with a character no one cares about.

Top entertainment at a high visual level
Streaming-Kati23 April 2024
"Halo" wants to be understood as an independent narrative. Since I haven't played the game and am therefore unbiased, it worked. You get a decently made action series with special effects from the Pixomondo masters (e.g. House of Dragon, Game of Thrones) and a good man vs. Evil aliens storyline.

It may start a little slow for some as the world and characters are built up, but as I was unfamiliar with the content of the game, it was quite helpful. There's also a big battle in the first few minutes where the divisions get to show what they've got.

The decision to show that there is a flesh and blood person behind the helmet, how John thinks and feels, how vulnerable he is when he's not behind his armor, how broken a person he is, that's one of the strengths of the series. It makes the character emotionally accessible. Lead actor Pablo Schreiber as John fills this role perfectly. Many of the characters have depth that gradually unfolds. It is a pleasure to see how the divisions develop, which were only seen as mere machines and denied any independent feelings and thoughts. How the team spirit overrides the chain of command. There are several storylines in this series, all of which intertwine. Everything remains in flux and you always have to sort out who has bad and who has good intentions.

The second major strength of the series is the high production quality. Almost everything is just right here. (Except for tiny details that you can overlook and that don't bother you) The visual power is incredible. The dense atmosphere that is created draws the viewer deeper and deeper into the vastness of space. David Wiener knows how to build up tension, e.g. In dark, gloomy and narrow places - with the enemy breathing down your neck. The camera delivers high-gloss images and seems to be inspired by the video game style; for example, there are also shots from the perspective of the Master Chief - a clear homage to the first-person shooter look of the game. In short: after watching the "Halo" series, you'll want to play the game. Because the setting, the equipment, the armor, weapons, spaceships and the various "worlds" have also been worked out with so much attention to detail that it makes a sci-fi heart beat faster. The battles are fast-paced and fast-moving. Together with all the CGI, this is impressive. "Halo" at an extremely high level.

If you always stick exactly to the source material, whether books or games, you will always be disappointed and should always stick to the "original". You should always be open to changes and see it as a modified story, then you can usually enjoy it. This is a sci-fi series for a broad audience and not just a cinematic summary as pure "fan service".

-------------- Conclusion: Outstanding - The story is well written, the acting is good and there is plenty of quality action and drama. We enjoyed the series from start to finish and couldn't stop watching. We are very much hoping for a sequel.

This is why we can't have nice things
ksgillihan26 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Halo is a concept and world that I have loved since the first days of the original Xbox. The first time I played Halo: CE I was blown away. The sheer vastness of the Halo ring and a singular character in green armor on the surface against all odds. After that, I played all the following Halo games and even read the novels. It is painfully clear to me that the writers failed to research some of the most basic things about key characters in this series. It wasn't even a good attempt.

One wonders why after so many years when a series about Halo or a movie wasn't made that whomever greenlit this could have failed so miserably at something so rich with lore. As a hardcore fan I actually wished and prayed that it would never be made. I felt in my heart that whomever did it would fail. Well, they did. Only one episode in I can already tell that the rest of the series would only disappoint me further. This feels like something that was made on about 1/4 of the budget that it should have had and 1/4 of the accuracies it should have had.

Where to begin? Well for starters they made the insurrectionists the good guys and the UNSC the bad guys. According to the novels the insurrectionists were at war with the UNSC and did their fair share of killing and terrorizing. That is the reason why the UNSC considered them hostile. That is why the SPARTAN program was conceived in the first place. The UNSC was far from completely innocent but they were the very last hope for humanities survival. The SPARTAN program single-handedly saved human kind from extinction. They clearly want the UNSC to seem like some kind of authoritarian, evil federation bent on irradicating anyone outside of them. This was simply not the case. The UNSC did NOT go out and murder anyone who wasn't "with" them. They only fought back against the insurgents who attacked them.

I also wonder why they spend so much time focusing on this one girl who was part of the insurrection. There were hundreds of thousands of people against the UNSC and once single insurrectionist would be meaningless to them. Especially a young girl with no political power or position. The SPARTANS were tasked with the most dangerous missions and ordered to stamp out the leaders of the terrorist organizations. They were not "murderers" as this series tries to make them out to be. This is so far off of the reality of the Halo world.

The Master Chief's character is all wrong too. He doesn't even have Steve Down's voice. That is an insult to us, the fans. He talks far too much as well. Master Chief also followed orders. He would not have arbitrarily disregarded orders to take out an insurgent. In addition, the UNSC would never order the Chief to kill a teenage girl either. It doesn't make sense. There is zero reason to do this in this situation. The Chief would also never remove his helmet to the audience. It is part of what makes him so unique and serves as character development throughout the storyline. It is also written that the Chief was "disturbingly pale" under his helmet because he left it on so much. They got this wrong as well.

They also changed a couple of the main characters races. I do not understand this concept. Why do it? For diversity? Well it doesn't work. Fans want it to be true to the lore. The admiral in this situation is also wrong. There is no way Parangosky would have ordered that they "take out" the Chief under any circumstances. As a member of ONI she understood the importance of the SPARTANs, in no small order, the Chief's as well. Starting out this series where the Chief goes AWOL after touching one piece of Forerunner technology is just strange. The whole beginning of this series starts out in a bizarre way and not close to the lore of the original world. I cannot see this series making up for the vast inconsistencies and inaccuracies it has displayed so far. I am deeply disappointed in it.

Short and sweet.. Absolutely loved the series, hoping for a season 3.

Great casting in all roles, superb action sequences, only gripe is the lack of original music from the Games, Marty O'Donnell's score is easily one of the best video game scores of all time, and was a major part of what made Halo successful.

Sure it can't please everyone especially the more hardcore halo fan, (whatever that is!) I've read the books played all the games since day one and this series stands on its own, fantastic adaption!! Hopefully we can get a season 3 with a few more episodes as 8/9 per season is a little short!

Can't wait for more!

Spectacular Effects Fuel Halo's Sci-Fi Saga
drhemp28 April 2024
Having read mixed reviews about Halo, I approached it with an open mind.

I was aware that the show deviated from the game's plot. However, this didn't deter my interest as I was more focused on the series as a standalone entity.

I enjoyed watching this series; the special effects and action scenes were phenomenal and always visually engaging. The battles felt visceral and intense, transporting me right into the heart of the conflict. The iconic vehicles and weapons from the games were translated beautifully to the screen.

The plot was, at times, a bit convoluted as it weaved multiple storylines together. There were moments where the pacing felt uneven, with some sections dragging slightly. However, the core story remained engaging, thanks in large part to the strong cast. The characters were well-developed and brought to life with excellent performances. The cinematography was also top-notch, creating a stunning visual world that complemented the story perfectly.

Despite the occasional pacing hiccups, I found the overall story engaging. The characters were well-developed and brought to life with excellent performances. The cinematography was also top-notch, creating a stunning visual world that complemented the story perfectly.

Thankfully, the second season maintained the quality established in the first. It left me wanting more and eagerly anticipating season 3. If you're looking for a visually stunning sci-fi action series with a compelling story and strong characters, then Halo is definitely worth checking out, especially if you can go in with an open mind about its deviations from the source material.

S2 a LOT better than S1
Timo_Noack24 April 2024
  • No Spoilers -

It was very hard for me to continue with season one. I'm not a total halo freak but i loved the games and for me personally the first season had not really much in common with the original heroic gameplay from bungies masterpieces.

The second season was much what i expect from a series like this. More action, the VFX was insanely well made and like that i'd say 4* for S1 and 8* for S2.

Furthermore i don't know what else interesting to say because the app wants me to write a complete novel or at least a script for S3 idk.

So enjoy your day and do not forget to play the games. There is no excuses!

Amazing sci-fi 10/10
psyhunterson27 April 2024
I should first say that I am not a fan of the HALO video games. But as it is clearly stated in the title screen when it starts, the series is BASED on the HALO universe. This means that viewers shouldn't necessarily expect the video game storyline!

Having said that, the series is solid science fiction, with so many cool effects and action scenes that I was really amazed! It's an eye candy for the people, like me, who love the sci-fi genre. The cinematics, the space travel scenes in the asteroid fields, the planets and their people, the plot, the whole atmosphere work great towards accurately depicting Halo universe and vibe. But don't expect the game's plot. This is an entirely new beast, story wise. It's easily in my top list of science fiction series. 10/10 🙂

Season 2 is an improvement...
derek-a-charette10019 March 2024
Halo fans were very critical of season one, because it was not at all what we were expecting due to the lack of action and combat scenes and a silly love story.

There were also many holes in the script, pointless and useless annoying characters like Kwan, and a terrible unrealistic chain of events regarding the bizarre love affair with Master Chief and the silly choices he made.

There was bad acting, poor script writing, poor character development, silly dialogue, and an extremely vague and confusing storyline with no particular direction and purpose.

However, coming into the second season, we had one thing going for us, and that was the visuals and sound design. Kate Kennedy is the best casting choice of the whole series. She's actually huge in real life, at 6 foot 3 inches tall. She's a fantastic actress, I like her voice, she's really cute (the kind of cute that grows on you), and she serves an important role of holding the actors around her together to maintain a sense of team and loyalty.

If only they would finally kill off the monumentally annoying character Kwan and spare us all the constant annoyance every time we have to her face on screen...

Seriously, the bar is so low
DongDiggity5 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Knowing this was never going to follow the books or the games, I gave this a shot and it's a bore. After episode 7 I'm confident in saying this is screwed up. Only action is a couple of episodes while the rest are overlong dialogue and annoying backstory of Master Chief.

The worst thing other than the constant removal of Spartan helmets is the new character Kwon! Oh my lord is she annoying and horribly written. Who the hell thought this was not only a good idea but green lit the dialogue?

The cgi is okay to crap and when there is action it's okay. They also planted a human with the aliens which seems even cheaper. The backstabbing from the unsc is really annoying and makes me happy that halo 1 didn't have all this crap. Honestly, this is such a joke. I loved most of the games and knew we'd never get a reused story but this is just a F you.

Great action Sci fi
mafigueroalart22 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get all the hate this show gets from the game fans. It's an extension of the game meant to appeal to a broader Sci Fi audience and it worked. It's got great action great story and great characters. I hope we get many more seasons. The balance of story vs action is really good. It's not some dumb Michael Bay shoot and explode action show. It's got depth and character development, they are flawed and human. The Covenant isn't a generic baddie, especially in the second season. We see the depth of their faith and how easily it could be manipulated. We see the Master Chief become more human and feel his grief.

Great show, but...
ChicoLegend12 March 2024
Huge fan of Halo and was born and raised with the video game franchise, now being 34. Halo 3 is still my fav.

This is all opinion, so what do I know about reviewing. I think the show is phenomenal, easily comparable to the likes of Mandalorian. They did a hell of a job picking Pablo Schreiber as lead role, and a surprising kicker to bring The Rock's(movie with Nicolas cage) Bokeem Woodbine, which he brings a "fun" attitude to the show.

The only reason the shows not a 9 for me, is BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL CORTANA from the first season. I see it's same voice actress, but keep the original CG. Thanks and keep up great work. O add a few more halo game sounds too! Thanks !

Shameful
lusciousmuffins25 March 2022
When you approach an intellectual property that you clearly do not respect or understand, there can be no good outcome.

In this case, the intent was obviously to exploit a beloved gaming franchise to push an agenda and make a profit.

Unfortunately, in their haste to use the Halo universe for their own purposes, the makers of this show did not bother to stop and reflect on the elements which originally made it successful.

Instead, they hollowed out the core concepts of the game until all that was left was an aesthetic shell, which they then filled up with their own ideology.

Beyond the lack of respect for the source material, this show also suffers from inept dialogue, abysmal character development, and emaciated plot development.

While this criticism may seem harsh, the series truly is an abject failure right out of the gate.

What is truly sad is that this did not have to be a disaster.

Forward Unto Dawn stands as a testament to the fact that Halo can be translated into an engaging story with flesh and blood actors.

Alas, in this instance a game with a devoted following and enormous potential was desecrated by outsiders who merely wanted to use an existing fanbase for their own purposes.

I have never played HALO, or otherwise had anything to do with it, until I recently began watching the various cutscenes movies on Youtube.

So, when I found this series on my local Freeview channel, I decided to give it a try.

It was a complete waste of my time. This series has been lifted straight out of the Let's-Make-Another-Generic-Space-Iinvaders-Movie basket and is so lame I could not bear to watch more than half an hour of it. Good luck to everyone who thinks it is worth their time, but I'm going back to the cutscenes.
