Sequel Month is halfway over, so it’s time to look at the new titles that will be available for streaming on Hulu in June and reveal what vague theme is tying the various movies and TV shows together. Surprisingly, the follow-up to May’s Sequel Month is actually Originals Month, with Hulu getting a handful of older movies that eventually got sequels. Finally, you can see where it all began with the original Free Willy, Ace Ventura, Ghost Rider, Joe Dirt (remember its sequel?), Legally Blonde, Boogeyman, Underworld, and Ong Bak, all of which will be available to stream on Hulu in June. Of course, Originals Month isn’t too exciting without getting to enjoy some sequels as well, so Hulu is throwing in Ong Bak 2, Ong Bak 3, The Pact 2, Underworld Evolution, xXx: State Of The Union, Legally Blonde 2, Boogeyman 2, Boogeyman 3, Ace Ventura ...

With February being a short month, genre fans only have a handful of horror and sci-fi arriving on VOD to look forward to over the next few weeks. One of my own most anticipated movies for 2016, the horror anthology Southbound, makes its VOD debut on February 9th, courtesy of The Orchard. For those of curious about two of the more buzzed-about remakes in some time – Martyrs and Cabin Fever – both films arrive on VOD on February 2nd and February 12th respectively.
Other notable titles hitting VOD this February include All Hallow’s Eve 2, Convergence, The Veil, Uncaged and Riddle Room.
All Hallows' Eve 2 (Rlj Entertainment) – February 2nd
Alone on Halloween, a young woman finds a mysterious VHS tape on her doorstep—a tape that shows a series of gruesome and ghastly tales that appear to be all too real. But these terrifying glimpses of damned souls are not the only horrors that stalk her.

It's hard to know what kind of reaction The Pact II was going for. The moody lighting and gruesome subject matter suggest that at some point during its hour and a half run time, the film hopes that you will be scared, but it's clear pretty early on that writers/directors Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath aren't clear on just how to evoke such a feeling. They have all the ornaments down (serial killers, weird dreams), but when you put it all together, it doesn't feel like much.

The first week of July sees a ton of genre titles headed home on DVD and Blu-ray including a handful of cult classics including Stuart Gordon’s Robot Jox, The Crimson Cult which co-stars Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee, Luigi Cozzi’s Contamination, a pair of 1974 shockers- Deranged and Spasmo- as well as The Killers, which is based on Ernest Hemingway’s chilling tale of the same name and gave the film noir subgenre a boost back in the 1940’s.

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Directors/writers: Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath. Cast: Caity Lotz, Camilla Luddington and Scott Michael Foster. It is strange to see a trailer as part of the film you already possess. It is even stranger to see that trailer mislabelled as The Pact (2012) and not The Pact II. Unfortunately, this is only the first step in a strange viewing experience, involving the Judas Killer. This time, the Judas Killer, who was killed in the first film, has a murderous admirer. More bodies begin to turn up, all around the protagonist, June (Camilla Luddington). But, who is this new killer? There will be many misdirections to lead you down the wrong path and all of the obfuscation grows tired, during a second viewing. A theme of surveillance is touched upon, but there are too many unfleshed and forgotten ideas here.

Fearlessly embracing emotionally and physically terrifying situations, in a courageous attempt to achieve your goals and overcome your fears, is an enthralling and powerful theme in the horror thriller, ‘The Pact II.’ Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath, the writers and directors of the sequel to scribe and helmer Nicholas McCarthy’s 2012 horror film, ‘The Pact,’ dauntlessly approached combining the emotional arc of the series’ characters with terrifying physical scares, to emphasize their brave attempts to maintain control over their lives. While the first film’s frightening serial killer was murdered at the end of its story, the franchise’s new filmmakers bravely emphasized how the series’ new and returning characters have [ Read More ]

When thinking of recent horror movie sequels garnering minimal demand, The Pact II could be one of the most prominent examples. I don’t care much for Nicholas McCarthy’s original 2012 haunter, a film that only made waves throughout hardcore genre communities, but such an under-the-radar lifespan didn’t stop a sequel from being greenlit – without the involvement of Nicholas McCarthy himself. Placed in the hands of co-directors Dallas Richard Hallam (Entrance) and Patrick Horvath (Die-ner), the Judas Killer lives once again in The Pact II, a direct sequel that strikes an impressively similar tone to McCarthy’s chilling signature style. My problems with the first film never complained about scares, though, only convoluted storytelling more focused on atmosphere than comprehension. Do Hallam and Horvath learn from McCarthy’s weaker notes? Yes and no – but we’ll get to that shortly.

When The Pact dropped two years ago, it quietly snuck onto the scene and surprised everyone with how smartly written and genuinely creepy it was. It seems that with losing its connection with writer-director Nicholas McCarthy (who has gone on to direct this year's At the Devil's Door), The Pact 2pulls some punches and just can’t get the scares that the first one delivered.
The sequel, written and directed by Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath (the duo who directed Entrance), tells the story of June and her boyfriend Daniel. Both are involved with law enforcement, Daniel is a beat cop who works nights and June cleans up crime scenes.
