Watch spotting at the Oscars is always catnip for timepiece lovers, as the biggest stars walk the red carpet wearing a parade of hyped horological mechanisms by the likes of Omega, Vacheron Constantin, Jacob & Co., Iwc, Cartier and Rolex (typically their own as that brand doesn’t gift or lend its pieces).
Falling into that latter category at Oscars 2024 was John Cena, who appeared nearly naked onstage during the telecast to announce the award for best costume design.
In addition to his modesty garment and a pair of Birkenstocks, the only other item the actor sported was his own Rolex Explorer II watch, which featured a white dial and an arrow-shaped 24-hour hand, as spotted by Watch Pro. The watch, which can display two time zones simultaneously, retails for $9,650.
Apparently, even when you’re naked at the Academy Awards, you don’t want to be without a trusty timepiece.

Ryan Gosling isn’t just Ken anymore.
The Oscar nominee was up for Best Supporting Actor for his turn in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” and also belted his “I’m Just Ken” ballad onstage during the 2024 Academy Awards.
Gosling, who moonlights as the Dead Man’s Bones frontman, rocked out to the Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt-penned song which became one of the many breakout anthems of the history-making blockbuster movie. Guitarist Slash from Guns N Roses accompanied Gosling for the live performance of the beloved “Barbie” track, along with fellow Ken “Barbie” actors Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and more, for a “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”-inspired musical moment.
Fellow “Barbie” song “What Was I Made For?,” written by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, was also performed during the ceremony. “What Was I Made For?” went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song.

The songs in the running for the 2024 Best Original Song Oscar are “It Never Went Away” (“American Symphony”), “I’m Just Ken” (“Barbie”), “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot”), and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Our current odds show that “What Was I Made For?” (31/10)) is favored to win, followed in order by “I’m Just Ken” (37/10), “It Never Went Away” (9/2), “The Fire Inside” (9/2), and “Wahzhazhe” (9/2).
This year’s roster of eight individual songwriters includes two pairs of former winners, each of which is associated with a “Barbie” song. Those who prevailed most recently are sibling duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, whose bid for “What Was I Made For?” comes two years after they took the gold for the title tune from the “James Bond” movie “No Time to Die” (2022). The Cinema Audio Society Awards gave a boost to the Oscar hopes of “Oppenheimer” on Saturday. The film took top honors at these precursor prizes that honor sound mixing over one of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound — “Maestro”– as well as “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.
Last year all five of the society’s favorites — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — sounded good to the academy’s sound branch. “Top Gun: Maverick” won both awards.
In 2022, four of the five Cas nominees — “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story” — went on to contend at the Oscars.

Oscar producers have announced the first performer and initial list of presenters for the Oscars 2024 ceremony. Nominee Ryan Gosling will perform the Original Song contender “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie” years after he turned down an opportunity to sing music from “La La Land” on the event. That news is according to our Pmc sister website Variety.
Presenters include all four of last year’s acting winners: Brendan Fraser from “The Whale” and Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan from “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In fact, every presenter revealed on Monday is a previous Academy Awards champ except for Michelle Pfeiffer and Zendaya. That list includes Mahershala Ali, Nicolas Cage, Jessica Lange, Matthew McConaughey, Lupita Nyong’o, Al Pacino and Sam Rockwell.

The 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards took awards season one step closer to the Oscars.
The annual PGA Awards happened February 25, immediately following the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The awards-heavy weekend festivities also included the 2024 SAG Awards on February 24.
The nominees mirror the Academy Awards’ frontrunners list, with winner “Oppenheimer,” plus “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” among the contenders.
Formally known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, the Theatrical Motion Picture category for the PGA Awards has historically been an indicator of Best Picture winners, with 15 of the previous 20 winners going on to win the top title at the Academy Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” director and “Maestro” producer Martin Scorsese was honored with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award for his producing work over the last half-century.

Between February 10 and March 7, a dozen motion picture guilds lauded the most outstanding achievements in their respective fields during the previous year. The 2024 guild awards season then officially concluded with the announcement of the Writers Guild of America honors on April 14. In the end, “Oppenheimer” outpaced all of its competitors with prizes from nine guilds.
Typically, all 13 guilds hand out their trophies before the corresponding Oscars take place, but this year’s WGA Awards were delayed six weeks because of the organization’s recent 148-day strike. The groups whose ceremonies preceded the Oscars on March 10 comprise art directors, directors, makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, visual effects artists, actors, producers, sound mixers, film editors, cinematographers, sound editors, and casting directors.

Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” will notch another incredibly important precursor win on its path to the Oscars at the upcoming 35th Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday, Feb. 25. The ceremony includes other film categories such as animated and documentary feature and television trophies for drama, comedy, limited series and more. A victory for “Oppenheimer” here would be significant because, more often than not, the winner at PGA goes on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Since 2000, the two prizes have gone hand-in-hand 16 times. The exceptions are film years 2001 (when PGA opted for “Moulin Rouge!” and the Oscars awarded “A Beautiful Mind”), 2004 (“The Aviator” / “Million Dollar Baby”), 2005 (“Brokeback Mountain” / “Crash”), 2006 (“Little Miss Sunshine” / “The Departed...

When the Oscar nominations were announced last month, it marked a watershed moment for the Documentary Feature category. All the nominated films focused on international subjects – stories from Uganda, Tunisia, Ukraine, India and Chile — and not a single American director was recognized.
Two prominent documentaries by major U.S. filmmakers were among the leading contenders that got snubbed: Matthew Heineman’s American Symphony, and Davis Guggenheim’s Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.
A headline in a recent Variety piece described the doc community as “reeling” over the nominations. An unnamed documentary producer quoted in the article expressed deep concern over the lack of recognition for American filmmakers and said it was a “giant mistake” that the Documentary branch – which determines the nominees – “did not nominate some of the most successful and most beloved films of the year.”

The BAFTA Awards were presented on February 18 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). So who prevailed? Scroll down for the complete 2024 BAFTA Awards winners list in all categories.
BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs could well give us a preview of what the Oscars might do in three weeks time on March 10. And with voting for the Oscars kicking off on February 22, this precursor could have an outsized influence.
Until 2013, the entire BAFTA membership decided the nominees in a complicated two-part process that involved a lot of longlists with the general membership deciding the semi-finalists and the branches making the final determination of the nominees. This was replaced in 2013 by a system more akin to the Oscars where nominations were determined by each branch (except for Best Picture). Two years ago,...

Two of the top contenders for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards have something to celebrate ahead of their upcoming Oscar showdown.
On Saturday night, The Eternal Memory, directed by Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi, was named Best IberoAmerican Film at the Goya Awards in Valladolid, Spain. Meanwhile, on this side of the Atlantic, Mstyslav Chernov’s 20 Days in Mariupol won Best Documentary at the DGA Awards held at the Beverly Hilton.
As she accepted the Goya – Spain’s equivalent of the Oscar – Alberdi was joined on stage by Paulina Urrutia, one of the two protagonists of the film. The Eternal Memory, or La Memoria Infinita as it is called in Spanish, tells the love story between Urrutia and Augusto Góngora, a bond that only deepened after Augusto was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 62.

He’s just Ken … not a guy who likes to sing at awards shows.
One of the big question marks about the 96th Academy Awards ceremony on March 10 is whether or not Ryan Gosling will perform his Oscar-nominated show-stopper “I’m Just Ken,” one of the five nominees for Best Song. The actor has been extremely coy about making an appearance, making jokes like, “Do you get paid to sing at the Oscars?”
The send-up of 1980s power ballads is nominated for Best Song and was co-written and produced by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. Ronson, the British hit-maker with an Oscar win for “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” and eight Grammys for work with Amy Winehouse, Silk City, and his own pop juggernaut, “Uptown Funk,” was spotted on the Grammys red carpet Sunday night by Variety, and asked if he had any further intel.

More than a week after this year’s Oscar nominees were unveiled, the documentary world is still reeling from this year’s selections and trying to figure out what they might mean for the struggling sector. Notably, all filmmakers were international and the majority lacked distribution by major streamers; presumed favorites backed by Netflix, Apple TV+ and Max all failed to score a slot on the final Oscar ballot.
Doc branch voters no longer seem impressed by the major streamers’ ability to spend millions during campaign season, documentary film leaders tell Variety, and in the view of several notables, could harbor resentment towards those who have benefited from big spending by streamers.
This year’s feature nominees are: Mstyslav Chernov’s “20 Days in Mariupol” (PBS), Kaouther Ben Hania’s “Four Daughters” (Kino Lorber), Nisha Pahuja’s “To Kill a Tiger”, Maite Alberdi’s “The Eternal Memory” (MTV Documentary Films...

Sundance documentaries are alive and well. And it looks like there’s some acquisition action this year, too. Which Sundance documentaries have the best shot at landing in Oscar contention this year? It helps to get bought early or to have an international footprint.
A rickety theatrical market for non-fiction features and a dwindling number of active documentary buyers meant that many Sundance 2023 films did not get picked up for distribution, or met serious delays before companies came through. As the top American film festival for docs, Sundance usually supplies as many as four out of the final five Oscar nominees each year.
And usually, by late summer, Oscar promotion is well underway. But last year, “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project,” which was rumored to be an HBO Documentary Films pickup for months, wasn’t announced until August 29, when other Sundance grads had been campaigning all summer.

When the Oscar nominations came out last week, the Best Documentary Feature category contained some bombshells: no recognition for two of the most decorated nonfiction films of the year.
In the latest edition of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, co-hosts John Ridley and Matt Carey drill down on the nominations, examining the snubs of American Symphony and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. And they explore why the Academy’s documentary branch, which determines the nominees, went for five internationally themed films, bypassing American-focused stories entirely.
Plus Carey, Deadline’s Documentary Editor, reports from the just-concluded 2024 Sundance Film Festival, talking with Best Director winners Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie of Sugarcane, Rory Kennedy and Mark Bailey of the explosive series The Synanon Fix, EP Kerry Washington and two of the main participants in Daughters, Will Ferrell and Harper Steele of Will & Harper, and more.
Daughters, winner of both the Audience Award for U.

Netflix scored 18 Oscar nominations for its 2023 films, with eight for feature films — the most of any distributor. All told, Netflix had nine nominations in top categories incuding Best Picture, International Film, Animated Feature, acting, and writing categories.
Not that Netflix’s domestic viewers seemed to notice. Since the Oscar nomination announcement January 23, not one nominated film reentered its top 10 most watched film list. Since then, two obscure titles have held the top spot: “The Hill,” a faith-based sports biopic that grossed under $8 million when it was released last summer, and “The Postcard Killings,” a 2020 home video-released European murder mystery directed by Oscar-winning director Denis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”).
Nominees fared somewhat better in VOD viewing. Led by “Oppenheimer” (Universal), all five Best Picture nominees that are available to view and without a streaming alternative placed on at least one top 10 list.

Many factors drive an Oscar nomination, but a film’s release strategy can make the crucial difference.
“Oppenheimer” (13 nominations) and “Barbie” (8 nominations) stand out as brilliantly handled releases. Shutouts like “Origin” (Neon), “All of Us Strangers” (Searchlight), “Air” (Amazon), “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” (Apple), and “Saltburn” (MGM) prove that no distributor is immune.
However, when it comes to the distributors with the best track record, there are two: Disney had 20 nominations across Searchlight (12), 20th Century Studios (2), and 1 each for National Geographic Documentary Films, Pixar, Searchlight/Hulu/Disney+, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Disney Branded Television and Disney+.
And then there’s Netflix, a behemoth that doesn’t do sub-brands. It had 18 nominations: 7 for “Maestro,” 2 each for “Nyad” and “Society of the Snow,” and 1 each for “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “May December,” “American Symphony,” “The After,” “El Conde,” “Rustin,” and “Nimona.” Theatrical releases for all of these films were modest at best,...

The Church of Satan would like to make it clear that members don’t worship the Devil, nor do they believe Satan is real. What they do believe in, and the rituals they practice, emerge in the documentary Realm of Satan, which just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Director Scott Cummings joins the new episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss the film, which he made in collaboration with the Church of Satan. It is described as a “nonfiction adjacent” film, which exists somewhere between reality and the fantastical. But that’s kind of the mindset of many members of the church, who believe in “indulgence” and carnal pleasures, and participate in incantatory ceremonies.
In one scene, the leader of the church, High Priest Peter Gilmore, trots around on hooves. And in another moment, the glowing spirit of wheelchair-bound man rises and floats out of frame. But there are mundane moments too,...

If this morning’s Academy Awards announcement proved anything, it is never bet against Diane Warren in your Oscar pool. Or John Williams.
Warren’s 15th nomination in the Best Song category (with no wins but an Honorary Oscar to show for it) and Williams’ 54th overall in music categories were the most predictable of a mostly predictable Oscar nomination list. The surprise would be if either of them were not nominated in a year in which they had eligible work. For Warren, it’s “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot, and for Williams it is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, marking the fourth Indy movie among his noms.

International voting pool continues to make impact
Before Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid began reciting – with evident delight – this year’s nominations, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Janet Yang announced that votes had been cast from a record 93 countries among the 11,000-strong Academy membership.
This internationalist perspective can most obviously be seen in strong showings for Justine Triet’s French-language Anatomy Of A Fall (more on that below) and Jonathan Glazer’s German-language The Zone Of Interest, and that in the documentary feature category four of the five nominated films are foreign-language titles: Ukraine’s 20 Days In Mariupol,...

The Hollywood studios are alive and well: They dominated the just-announced Oscar nominations, with Universal’s mighty biopic “Oppenheimer” heading for a Best Picture win with an expected 13 nominations, including Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay (Christopher Nolan); Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.); and Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt). Universal specialty division Focus added five for holiday hit “The Holdovers,” including Actor and Supporting Actress, for a studio total of 18.
Disney delivered a total 20, including Searchlight’s “Poor Things” (11), led by Best Actress frontrunner, Oscar-winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) and Supporting Actor and animated entry “Elemental.” And Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” followed with eight, including expected Supporting Actor and unexpected Supporting Actress and two nods for Best Song.

Before making Past Lives, writer-director Celine Song says with a laugh, she didn’t even know how to read a call sheet. Flash forward a year, though, from the A24 romantic drama’s world premiere at Sundance, and she’s landed an Original Screenplay Oscar nom for her debut feature, also seeing it land a slot in the category of Best Picture.
For Song, who was formerly best known for her acclaimed work as a playwright, the recognition means the world. “It’s just so amazing. It’s such a great honor, and on the first movie, I think that’s really the coolest thing,” the filmmaker told Deadline. “It feels so f**king cool and amazing, and I just genuinely am so f**king grateful for every single person…who’s ever come across being a part of this movie, anybody who’s even talked to me about this movie.

Oscar winners John Williams and Martin Scorsese continue to prove that age is just a number with their 2024 nominations.
Williams, 91, already the most nominated person alive and second most nominated ever behind Walt Disney, added an Original Score nomination for Indiana Jones and the Dial Of Destiny, his 54th overall. Meanwhile, Scorsese surpassed Steven Spielberg to become the living director with most Oscar nominations, 10, with a directing nom for Killers of the Flower Moon.

This is Williams’ second consecutive Oscar nomination; he was nominated in the same category last year for The Fabelmans when he became the oldest Oscar nominee at 90. Williams’ nominations, which include mentions for four movies in the Indiana Jones franchise, span seven decades, with the first one coming in 1968 for Valley of the Dolls.

It was a big morning for Barbie when the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. The Warner Bros. film scored eight nominations, including one for the top prize of best picture. But Greta Gerwig was unexpectedly left out of the best director category, and star Margot Robbie failed to land a best actress nod for her role as the titular character in the summer box-office smash.
Gerwig is nominated with partner Noah Baumbach in the best adapted screenplay category for their Barbie script and Robbie, as one of Barbie‘s producers, is nominated for best picture and would take home an Oscar if the film wins the top prize.
Meanwhile, fellow Barbie star America Ferrera was somewhat of a surprise inclusion in the best supporting actress category, as she missed out on precursor nominations at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she is nominated as part of the Barbie cast,...

In a film career that has spanned more than 20 years, Cillian Murphy just scored his first Oscar nomination, for playing the titular role in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster epic Oppenheimer.
Murphy, who was at his parents’ house in Ireland when his name was called out Tuesday and was “sitting around having tea” before “the phone started popping,” spoke with Deadline just after the nominations announcement.
“I feel really privileged and I feel really lucky to be in a film that’s connected with people in a way that it has critically and commercially,” he said. “To be in a film that people have seen three and four and five times and they come up to you and tell you that…”

Given that nominations in most categories for the Oscars and Bafta Film Awards are determined by similar processes – for example, chapter voting – and members of the two film academies are similar in outlook, it’s no surprise to see similarities in the two sets of nominations.
Oscar and Bafta are in agreement that this year Oppenheimer is the broadest achievement, earning 13 nominations for both awards, followed by Poor Things, with 11 nods at both.
There are, however, some notable differences in taste and opinion among the two sets of voters. Barbie was considered to have under-performed at Bafta with five nominations,...
