Charlie Was Their Darling
This BBC Scotland series of thirty minute profiles handpicks six so-called living-legends of Scottish football from a previous generation, more particularly the 80's it would seem.
The first into the chair was ex-Celtic, Arsenal and Aberdeen striker Charlie Nicholas who later became a long-standing (or should that be long-sitting-there-thinking?) pundit for Sky Sports.
As a player, Charlie Nick was a precocious talent, capable of sublime skill but also with a killer touch in front of goal. He told us however that even after his best display of the season with his beloved Celtic, the club would not offer him an improved contract and instead allowed him to be sold to Arsenal.
Although he won over the Gunners fans, when the London side changed their manager and brought in the more pragmatic and system-based George Graham, Charlie was suddenly the odd-man-out and featured less and less in the first team. He did have a last hurrah with them however, scoring twice in a League Cup Final victory at Wembley to ensure at least that the fans there remember him as a winner.
He then returned to Scotland for a successful spell with Aberdeen but then made the self-confessed mistake of letting his head rule his heart and returned to Celtic Park with, at best, mixed success.
Charlie comes across in this programme as he always did both on and off the pitch, a likeable cheeky chappie, perhaps not the brightest in the box but with personality and self-confidence to compensate.
I enjoyed this BBC trawling of their vaults for some great vintage footage as well as the complementary interviews with complimentary former teammates, rivals and commentators.
A light pleasant nostalgic trip down Scottish football memory lane I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the series.
