- "Nashville" - "A Picture From Life's Other Side" - May 15, 2013
A lot of action in tonight's penultimate season one episode.
First up is Rayna's label announcement. Marshall wants to close the deal on two artists by the end of the month and get going. Rayna knows she's got Scarlett, and will introduce her at a show at the Opry the following night, but she and Bucky decide to hold auditions to find a male artist.
When Will gets wind of the super-secret auditions from Scarlett he shows up and talks his way into an audition and wows Rayna and Bucky with his swagger and voice.
Meanwhile Gunnar is running himself ragged recording Jason's songs and trying to build an "outlaw" image to fit them. When he goes on a radio show and claims that he's a bad boy who does what he wants, Scarlett wonders what is happening to him and asks Will to speak to him.
Will heads down to a gig where Gunnar is playing up said image and when a guy at the bar wonders where Gunnar did the time he sings about, he and Will get into a scuffle that lands them in jail, which causes them to miss Scarlett's debut at the Opry.
The debut itself is a triumph. Even though she is nervous and calling Gunnar, Deacon helps prop her up and then she gets a box from a friend in the audience: a whisk from Avery. It is very sweet. She finds him in the audience as she sings and it perks her up and he just beams at her. She receives a standing ovation.
The next morning in jail Will and Gunnar commiserate. Gunnar thanks him for having his back. Will says it's not his first time in jail but it doesn't seem like Gunnar. He replies he doesn't know what's "like me" anymore. Will apologizes for "that thing" he did. Gunnar apologizes for overreacting saying he was just surprised. Will admits that when he was 17 that his dad caught him with a friend and asked him to explain himself. He couldn't. His dad said he couldn't live under his roof while he figured it out. So he hitched a ride to Abilene, got a job, and learned guitar. Gunnar asked him if he ever figured it out. Will says that all he knows is the only time he's happy is when he's playing and singing. He's going to be a country star no matter what it takes. Gunnar agrees he is going to do the same.
Scarlett bails them out and Will promises to pay her back. Gunnar tries to apologize but Scarlett isn't having it. She says she fell in love with Gunnar, not his brother and she wants no part of what he's doing.
Meanwhile, when Lamar starts showing signs of forgetfulness Tandy tries to lay the groundwork for a coup. But Lamar shows up unannounced at a board meeting and reclaims his place at the head of the table.
Juliette's goes from frying pan to full on fire. After a brief writing session with Avery in which she says she doesn't believe in love because everyone who ever loved her betrayed her, she gets bad news from Dante.
He wants $2 million for the SD card of the sex tape he made of them. Juliette still doesn't want to involve the police and have a scandal right before the CMAs so she sets up a meeting to hand off the cash. Dante doesn't show and decides to up his price to $10 million. Juliette decides to simply come clean and sets up an interview with "The View" and tapes a statement saying she has made mistakes but this time she simply fell in love and trusted the wrong man.
But just as she's about to appear on the show via satellite she gets a desperate call from Jolene. After going on an oxy and booze bender, she called Dante and told him she'd give him the original two million in exchange for the card. But when he shows up, she shoots him instead and then overdoses. She calls Juliette and says her goodbyes and throws the SD card in the garbage disposal.
Juliette arrives to the apartment and weeps over the wreckage. Later, catatonic with grief and anger she watches the news reports of the shooting and overdose.
And finally, Deacon wonders when he and Rayna can stop sneaking around. She says she needs to talk to the girls but in the meantime invites him over to dinner with them.
They're getting cozy playing a tune when Teddy shows up unannounced and pulls Rayna aside. He reiterates that he doesn't want her to see him or have him around the girls. She says it's not up to him. She notes that her opposition to Peggy was that he was having an affair. He counters that she was having one the entire time they were married. She tells him not to rewrite history and that he can't dictate what she does.
Except the next day Teddy serves her with a restraining order. Rayna can't believe he did this and Teddy tells Rayna that he finally did what Lamar said and he grew a pair.
Rayna tells Deacon about the restraining order but says she can still see him. Maddie overhears her saying I love you and so Rayna sits her down and tells her it's Deacon, that they're seeing each other, and it's grown-up stuff and when she's old enough she'll tell her.
Rayna visits Lamar and asks him to help with the restraining order. Lamar says he'll take care of it.
Teddy and Rayna meet up in court and the judge admits that Lamar called him but it was just to put in a word for keeping the proceedings quiet. He lifts the restraining order and says that they will need to return to court in two weeks.
Maddie goes snooping in Rayna's closet and finds a strongbox.
Rayna goes to see Teddy and says she wants to come to an understanding like reasonable people reassuring him that he will always be Maddie's father. She notes that he has trusted her all this time to keep this secret and that he needs to keep trusting her. He agrees.
Unfortunately, inside the strongbox Maddie found a paternity test. She calls her friend in tears saying that she doesn't think Teddy is her father.
