Exclusive: Patrick Warburton will star in and produce The Unearthly, an indie blending elements of sci-fi, comedy and horror that will go into production in Connecticut early this year. Directing the pic for Centerboro Productions is Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye).
In The Unearthly, a team of paranormal investigators live-stream a “Halloween Special” ghost hunt of a notorious haunted mansion, finding the source of the evil at hand to be far more deadly than they ever could have imagined. Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder, archaic Emf meter, and his own smarts in his ghost hunting. His goal is to reclaim...

Sometimes it’s fun to look back on human history and acknowledge the sheer absurdity of the way we used to resolve conflicts. The pistol duel is the perfect example of that. An event which would’ve been used to decide any number of petty issues from stolen goods to personal pride. Filmmaker Jon Olav Stokke (last seen on Dn with fractious fraternal drama Our Father’s Cabin) presents one of these encounters, in all its farcical glory, in Deloping – a period comedy where two women prepare for a fight to the death. Stokke captures the moments of miscommunication and confusion that lead up to the all important gunfire in hilarious fashion, from the step counting through to the operation of the weaponry, the sheer ridiculousness of the duel is on full display. Dn is delighted to premiere Deloping online today alongside a conversation with Stokke where he discusses the...

The animation community was taken aback at the July 12 announcement that there would be no Emmy awarded this season for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program. The category was shut out for the first time since its inception in 2008 (when it was called Outstanding Special Class Short-Format Animated Program). The TV Academy stated: “Submissions were prescreened to determine nominations. None of the submissions received nine-tenths approval, resulting in no nominations this year.”
For the first time, there were only seven submissions for the category, which triggered a special rule calling for a select panel of animation members to review them. A nomination required nine out of 10 votes of approval. None of the entries passed the threshold.
The seven submissions consisted of: “Only You: An Animated Shorts Collection” (Max), eight shorts created by 12 underrepresented artists as part of a special HBO/Warner Bros. program; “Maggie Simpson In: Rogue Not Quite One” (Disney...

While drama is seemingly encouraged in MTV’s The Challenge, fighting and bullying aren’t. Since its inception in 1998, 20 players have gotten kicked off the long-running competition series for breaking the rules, with only one contestant removed from multiple seasons.
Ayanna Mackins
The Road Rules star debuted in season 4’s Extreme Challenge (2001). Around episode 6, she physically assaulted Christian Breivik off-camera after he made an offensive joke to castmate Laterrian Wallace. Even though he didn’t want her to leave, producers removed her from the house, making her the first contestant disqualified for breaking the rules. She returned for two more seasons and recently returned to the franchise for spinoff All Stars.
Tina Barta
The two-time finalist was quickly removed from season 13’s The Duel (2006) after punching Beth Stolarczyk in the face. She never returned to the flagship series afterward but has competed in All Stars.

Many fans thought Nany Gonzalez pulled a ‘dirty move’ by targeting Aneesa Ferreira’s injury
Shortly after Day 2 of the finals in The Challenge: Ride or Dies aired, Aneesa Ferreira, rolled her ankle when teammate Jordan Wiseley suggested they run off the marked trail and through the forest.
Regardless, she powered through the remaining legs. However, after navigating through the dark corn maze, they reached host T.J. Lavin last, earning them a spot in elimination against Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio and Nany González.

The Challenge star Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio competed in 20 seasons before returning for Ride or Dies. In a recent interview, the winningest player named the season he considered the toughest to endure.
Johnny ‘Bananas’ Devenanzio named his ‘most miserable’ season
Seven-time champ Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio has competed on The Challenge consistently since his 2006 debut on The Duel.
Therefore, he’s faced several conditions that would make the seasons more challenging, including the Survivor-inspired season The Island, which he went on to win, and being forced to compete alongside his rivals and exes. However, Johnny named season 32’s Final Reckoning (2018) as his “most miserable” season and pointed to the lack of human connection as the reason.

Go beyond the blockbusters to today’s smartest, most exciting science fiction novels and novellas. Here are our top picks for October 2021:
Star Wars: Ronin
Type: Novel
Publisher: Del Rey
Release date: Oct. 12
Den of Geek says: Candon’s debut novel brings Star Wars into a new dimension with an expansion on the short anime episode “The Duel” in Star Wars: Visions. Taking place as if one step aside from the universe we know and love, it’s an inventive and thoughtful story that also never forgets the initial concept: that a samurai Sith is very cool.
Publisher’s summary: The Jedi are the most loyal servants of the Empire.
Two decades ago, Jedi clans clashed in service to feuding lords. Sickened by this endless cycle, a sect of Jedi rebelled, seeking to control their own destiny and claim power in service of no master. They called themselves Sith.

Seven animation studios have come together to create Star Wars: Visions, a collection of nine anime short films that reimagines the galaxy far, far away through the lens of Japanese culture and aesthetics. It’s one of the most ambitious projects Lucasfilm has ever embarked on with the saga, and it’s an experiment that largely pays off, as it not only brings fresh perspectives to Star Wars but also new characters, from the mysterious swordsman known only as Ronin to a little droid named T0-B1 who wants nothing more than to become a real Jedi Knight.
The stories in Visions take place across several eras of the Star Wars saga, including after The Rise of Skywalker, but are these tales part of the official Disney canon? Here’s what you need to know.

“Star Wars: Visions,” the new nine-part anime anthology on Disney+, returns the franchise to its Japanese roots even more directly than “The Mandalorian” to expand the universe. What’s exciting is how the seven anime studios filter the franchise so comfortably through the prism of Japanese culture. That’s because George Lucas’ original vision for “Star Wars” was an imaginative fusion of Japanese cinema and sci-fi space opera.
“‘Star Wars’ has been so influenced by Japanese culture from Kurosawa films [‘The Hidden Fortress’] to jidaigeki [period samurai] films [from which the Jedi name is derived] to Zen Budhism and its impact on the Force,” said executive producer James Waugh of Lucasfilm. “We’ve been talking about doing [‘Star Wars’ anime] for a long time, but we couldn’t make it happen until the force of nature that’s Disney+.”
On “Visions,” Lucasfilm Animation partnered with Kanako Shirasaki and Justin Leach of Qubic Pictures. They approached the anime studios that they wished to collaborate with, and...

The first short film in Star Wars: Visions, “The Duel,” sets the anime collection’s unique, creative tone. Its main character, a wandering swordsman named Ronin, also challenges the idea of what it means to be a Sith. But just who is Ronin and what is the significance of his name?
Visions sits just to the side of Disney’s Star Wars canon. Given free range to create stories inspired by the beloved saga, the seven studios invited to make the nine anime shorts in the collection were able to reinterpret the story of Star Wars in their own ways. In “The Duel,” the protagonist simply known as Ronin wields multiple red lightsabers like a Sith. So does his opponent. That’s weird — in canon, morality is usually color-coded with red for evil and other lightsaber colors denoting noble Jedi. But “The Duel...

Let’s get this out of the way: Star Wars: Visions is wonderful, a pleasure to watch from start to finish, even if it does tend to lean on the same subject matter from one anime short film to the next. But Visions‘ over-reliance on Jedi stories is more than fair. After all, George Lucas heavily borrowed from real samurai history and traditions for his laser sword-brandishing space wizards. It’s only right that the seven Japanese animation studios assembled to bring Visions to life should get a chance to reinterpret Jedi lore now.
I won’t be going into heavy spoilers in this review, as you should really go into each of these stories fresh. Plus, since most of the shorts are less than 20 minutes long, revealing even the smallest twists can give whole episodes away. But what I will say is that each short does an excellent job...

[Editor’s Note: The following review is based on all nine episodes of “Star Wars: Visions” and contains spoilers for Episode 1.]
“Star Wars: Visions” is one of, if not the best, titles — television, film, or otherwise — to come out of the sci-fi franchise’s era under Disney ownership. It’s a beautifully animated and smartly written homage to everything that fans love about “Star Wars,” as well as the rare kind of installment in a multi-billion dollar IP that doesn’t feel like it was created by committee or focus-tested until all the artistry has been stripped away. If you’re a “Star Wars” fan who has become apathetic toward lightsabers and the Force in recent years, “Visions” could remind you about what made you love the franchise in the first place.
That’s a lot of extremely high praise, but “Visions” earns it over the course of its nine brief episodes. The animated anthology series’ episodes hail from seven Japanese anime studios...

Marvel projects may be drawing a slew of high-profile actors to Australia, but it seems there are also local productions inversely capable of attracting MCU talent.
Christopher James Baker has been back in his native country for the past year following more than a decade in New York, during which he starred in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and also shot the upcoming DC Universe Series, Stargirl.
He has been able to hit the ground running following his return, with roles in Stan’s eight-part mystery drama Eden, as well as Goalpost’s gold rush drama New Gold Mountain.
Baker will first be seen in the former, which is set to premiere on the streaming platform on June 11.
The Every Cloud Productions/Balloon Entertainment series centres on the disappearance of a young woman and a subsequent chain of events that serves to lay bare dark and hidden secrets within the titular coastal town.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the finale of “The Challenge: Total Madness.”
As the contestants on “The Challenge: Total Madness” prepared for their final competition, Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio toasted the group by telling them that out of all of the seasons of the MTV reality competition of which he was a part — and there were a lot, this being a record 20th — “this is hands down mentally, spiritually, emotionally the most draining experience I have ever been through.”
With its post-apocalyptic theme and bunker-style housing arrangements, “Total Madness” set out to make it feel like the world had ended and there was no one left but those competing for the million-dollar prize. And that was still before the group had to trek through miles of snow at 9,000 feet of elevation in the Austrian alps, carrying logs, building fires, solving puzzles and climbing steep terrain.

So far it would seem that Disney has yet to greenlight The Duel, featuring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, as well as Adam Driver. But if the Mouse House passes on this movie then it’s likely that it will be able to find a new home all the same since Ridley Scott is a huge reason why it would be seen as popular and worth the effort. For the fifth year running, Lyon’s Lumière Festival will honor Hungarian cinema and invite guests of the Hungarian National Film Fund to present two classic Hungarian films from important national filmmakers, Márta Mészáros’ “Ők ketten” (“Women”) and Zoltán Fábri’s “Fifth Seal.”
Both films will be presented by Lumière Festival special guest Marina Vlady on Oct 18.
It’s a treat for the Hungarian National Film Fund, coming just one month after hosting their own retrospective film festival, the Budapest Classics Film Marathon. This year’s event saw 100 films screen over seven days with more than 17,000 spectators attending.
1977’s “Women” stars popular Hungarian actors Lili Monori and Golden Globe-nominated Marina Vlady (“The Conjugal Bed”) with an appearance from Vladimir Visotski (“The Duel”). The story turns on two women, Juli and Mari, who are each experiencing marital crisis. Their problems bring the two together in an attempt to help one another put their lives back together.

You wouldn’t say that Saturday Night Live had an off year per se — any season that gave us the sight of Adam Driver crushing stuffed birds with a cane is not a complete flaming trash-heap of a failure. But there was a certain sense of SNL fatigue that started to hit around the halfway point of Season 44; you began to dread the inevitable big-political-story-of-the-week opener, the fake music videos, the surprisingly weak meta-monologues and beaucoup celebrity cameos. It was an odd year out, with the usual dominating forces (God bless you,...

After another mini-break, “Saturday Night Live” is back with a new episode and another first-time host: Sandra Oh. Oh, Sandra. Sandra Oh’s monologue gets this episode off to a pretty good start, as she lets the whole world know she’s Canadian, she’s Asian, and she’s now a United States citizen… but she also has absolutely no idea how to be assertive and braggadocious, as she’s Canadian, and she’s Asian. This isn’t a Leslie Jones-heavy episode — in fact, the entire joke of the later sketch she’s “supposed” to figure into involves her not actually getting to do anything...

Ever since MTV released the official trailer for The Challenge: Final Reckoning, we've had a lot of questions - especially since, as MTV warns, this season will be "the end of The Challenge as you know it." We know that Final Reckoning marks the conclusion of the series trilogy, which began with XXX: Dirty 30 and was followed by Vendettas. We came over for Sundance for Wish You Were Here and the whole experience was a real trip for us. We had the opening night film and there was a massive party afterwards catered by some sort of celebrity chef who had been flown in. And all the top agents had flown up from L.A. specifically for that screening, and we were just being courted. At...

The world blessed us with another Hemsworth this year, and now the elder brother of Liam and Chris is making his next move, going from Westworld to an indie Western. According to Deadline, Luke Hemsworth is set to play Wild Bill Hickok in Abilene. It looks like Hemsworth will be following in the footsteps of his kid brother: Liam Hemsworth jumped into the Western game earlier this year, starring with Woody Harrelson in The Duel. Like Hemsworths, Westerns are an inexhaustible resource.
Timothy Woodward Jr.’s upcoming Western was written by Michael Lanahan, and also stars Trace Adkins, Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Dern and Cameron Richardson. In Abilene, the rough-around-the-edges gunslinger and lawman Wild Bill goes to Abilene looking for an ex but gets roped into being town marshal, having to deal with the town’s outsized outlaw problem. This serves as a lesson: Don’t ever go looking for your...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Blood Father (Jean-François Richet)
If this be the movie jail that Mel Gibson is destined to die in, it could be a whole lot worse. Blood Father, directed by Jean-François Richet (Mesrine, Assault on Precinct 13), works remarkably well as a grindhouse throwback, sporting a screenplay (from Peter Craig and Andrea Berloff, based on Craig’s novel) that’s better than it has any right to be.

A cinematically flat, sluggish western that feels altogether bloodless despite offering up several splatterings of runny red stuff, The Duel is a messy misfire, shooting itself in the foot with disjointed storytelling and a lack of artistic vision. It’s a forgettable, muddled affair that’s elevated to a certain extent by two leads whose contrasting styles go together unexpectedly well – just about the only positive note that’s worth pointing out.
Bringing a brooding, poker-faced presence to the rivalry at the center of the film is Liam Hemsworth, who plays Texas Ranger David Kingston. It’s 1866, a time when the Rio Grande acted as the border between Mexico and the United States; when a procession of Mexican corpses start floating down the river, David is sent on an undercover mission by his Ranger superiors to investigate the prime suspect, a religious leader named Abraham Brant (a crackling, witty Woody Harrelson...
