Of this production, I did prefer Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi, but Suor Angelica is still very good
Il Trittico is very interesting for having three contrasting operas in one, and it is a most effective one at that. Not Puccini's best work by all means, but I don't care because I get so much pleasure listening to Puccini. Of this 1983 production, which is very good(though not my favourite, the 1981 Met production is one I prefer), Suor Angelica is my least favourite of the performances of the three operas. But it still has some very good things about it. Okay maybe the sets are old-fashioned, having been spoilt by the remarkably dark and compact atmosphere of those of Il Tabarro, and while she sings musically with great phrasing and sensitivity and her acting is extraordinarily moving I would have preferred for Rosalind Plowright to have a more ethereal quality to her voice. However, the staging does convey the poignancy of the story very effectively, the ending is just devastating and the rapport between Angelica and the Principessa is like Liu vs. Turandot and to quite chilling effect. The costumes are at least fitting to the mood of the opera too, and they never jar with the setting. The orchestral playing is lushly heart-wrenching, and the conducting is very elegant and gentle without being sluggish. Dunja Vejzovic is a superbly commanding Principessa. All in all, very good, but the Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi were even better in my opinion from this production. 8/10 Bethany Cox
