Exclusive: Netflix’s film division has preemptively acquired a pitch for an untitled law school thriller from Holland, Michigan‘s Andrew Sodroski, sources tell Deadline.
Netflix could not be reached for comment. While plot details are unknown at this time, the pitch is said to be described as a contemporary spin on The Firm meets The Wolf of Wall Street. Ben Pugh and Peter Dealbert will produce for the L.A. and London-based management and production company 42.
Most recently, 42 worked with Netflix as a producer on its sci-fi actioner Outside the Wire starring Anthony Mackie, which debuted at #1 and was watched by 66 million households in its first quarter on the platform. Sodroski’s pitch marks 42’s second pre-emptive sale in a row on the heels of The Bet, a thriller spec from Enemy‘s Javier Gullón that sold to Warner Bros for what we’re told was a significant figure.

Despite the mixed reviews for Road House, the viewers and critics unanimously loved Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance in the bouncer role. It’s no wonder that the actor has such a good portfolio and even his rejected roles speak volumes of his skills. Gyllenhaal was in the running to play Batman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. While the role eventually went to Christian Bale, Gyllenhaal was not bummed out by the rejection.
Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners
The Donnie Darko actor’s positive mindset was influenced by the fact that Nolan personally called him to tell him that he did not get the role. Gyllenhaal went on to land roles in critically acclaimed films like Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead, following his Batman rejection.

Exclusive: Warner Bros is finalizing a deal to preemptively acquire The Bet, a hot spec from Spanish screenwriter Javier Gullón (Enemy), according to multiple sources.
The studio declined comment. No deal figure was given.
While plot details are under wraps, the project has been described as a twisty, female-led thriller with pitch-black humor, set at a glittering destination for the ultra-rich. Ben Pugh, Peter Dealbert and Josh Varney will produce for 42.
A Goya Award nominee, Gullón is best known for scripting the surreal psychological thriller Enemy for director Denis Villeneuve. Released by A24 in 2014 after world premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, the film starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a man on a quest for his exact look-alike, after spotting him in a movie. Mélanie Laurent, Sarah Gadon, and Isabella Rossellini co-starred.

It has only been 12 years since New York audiences saw a production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic nineteenth-century play “An Enemy of the People.” But unlike that last staging at the Manhattan Theatre Club, the version that just opened at Circle in the Square Theatre on Mar. 18 is a departure, thanks to the vision of director Sam Gold and a new adaptation of the text by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog. “Enemy” runs through June 16, the day of the 2024 Tony Awards.
Gold has attracted star-wattage to his remounting of the Ibsen play with Jeremy Strong in the title role of Dr. Thomas Stockmann, who uncovers that the spas that have made his Norwegian town a booming tourist destination are in fact highly contaminated and will cause many visitors to get sick and potentially die. Michael Imperioli is his brother, Peter Stockmann, the mayor of the town who immediately turns on...

Whether or not the climate activists who interrupted a critics’ preview of Broadway’s An Enemy of the People last week persuasively made their “water’s coming for us all” message isn’t for me to say, but I will note that the disruption spoke very well for this production.
Amy Herzog’s adaptation of Ibsen’s 1882 classic about a Norwegian town doctor deemed “an enemy of the people” for his truth-telling about an environmental health hazard is smart, sharp and relevant. The science vs. commerce debate is uncannily current, as Herzog thoughtfully makes clear. Ibsen created an archetypal situation here — I’d be willing to bet a trip to the beach that Peter Benchley was more than a little familiar with Enemy when he created that spineless, shark-denying mayor of Jaws, and if the activists at last week’s show hadn’t already seen a performance of this production,...

Denis Villeneuve has swiftly risen to prominence as one of the most lauded and sought-after directors, particularly renowned for his masterful handling of science fiction narratives, exemplified by his recent addition, Dune: Part Two. Yet, his prowess extends far beyond the confines of this genre as Villeneuve has demonstrated equal brilliance in navigating the complexities of drama, action, and psychological thrillers.

One notable film in his repertoire features Jake Gyllenhaal. And the filmmaker has shared that his directorial approach for the 2013 film involved pushing the Oscar-nominated actor to his limits to extract the most authentic emotions possible.

Denis Villeneuve's 2017 sci-fi film "Blade Runner 2049" is a worthy follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1982 flick "Blade Runner." Both presented unique and beautifully photographed sci-fi landscapes that were unique to the genre, and gorgeous to behold. They were the kinds of sci-fi landscapes that college-aged cineastes love to use as their laptop wallpapers. Additionally, both "Blade Runners" contained a few notably punchy action setpieces nestled in between steamroller-paced scenes of sorrowful contemplation. Also, both were infused with the same flavor of navel-gazing angst that feels incredibly profound when you're 16. Villeneuve's film outstripped Scott's in that it was a full 46 minutes longer.
"Blade Runner 2049" was Villenueve's ninth feature film as a director, having established his aesthetic in Canada with films like "Polytechnique" and "Incendies," and who became an international superstar with the success of films like "Prisoners" and "Sicario." For those who may not be aware, Denis Villeneuve started his career in Quebec long before he became a big Hollywood director. One of the biggest directors ever to emerge from this Canadian province (where some of us working for JoBlo – including yours truly – live), Villeneuve started to break through internationally with his films Polytechnique and Incendies. These movies led to his American debut with Prisoners, and the rest, as they say, is history.
In a full-circle moment, Villeneuve brought Dune: Part Two back to his Montreal home for a gala premiere, and JoBlo was invited to speak to the legendary director on the red (or rather spice-coloured) carpet, where we had a few minutes to chat with him about what’s coming up next for him. You’d be hard-pressed to find a filmmaker who has put together a finer body of work than Denis Villeneuve has since making his U.S. debut in 2013. From the mold-breaking thrillers of Prisoners, Enemy and Sicario to a murderers’ row of sci-fi films including Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 and Dune, the French Canadian director’s films have amassed over $1.1 billion in worldwide box office and landed him three Oscar nominations. His winning streak is all the more impressive when you consider that he put his camera down for much of the 2000s in order to refine his cinematic identity. That nine-year gap was still flanked by a handful of lauded Canadian films, but it wasn’t until 2010’s Oscar-nominated Incendies that Villeneuve felt like he’d finally discovered his signature. Now, Dune: Part Two (March 1) is poised to be his new top grosser after effusive early reactions and reviews.

Few filmmakers of the 21st century have risen to prominence and prestige with the forcefulness of Denis Villeneuve, whose seemingly unstoppable career has been bolstered by a steady balance of critical respect and commercial success. In fact, Christopher Nolan is the only other person who comes to mind, and the similarities between the two of them are hard to ignore.
For one thing, these men are both men, and that tends to be a more crucial detail than it should. For another, they’re also genuine auteurs, each committed to a clinical brand of Cinema (with a capital “C”) that’s muscular and intellectual in equal measure. Nolan is a bit more rigidly defined by his own rubric, but Villeneuve shares his gift for sublimating big ideas into even bigger spectacles and has likewise honed his skills by fluidly moving between massive blockbusters and idiosyncratic passion projects. Denis Villeneuve is on one heck of a winning streak these days -- a "heater," as the kids might say. The director behind jaw-dropping films like "Enemy" and "Sicario" followed up his early success by turning himself into a household name, first making 2016's "Arrival" into an Academy Awards darling before unleashing "Blade Runner 2049" on the masses. Now, the filmmaker who once made a feature-length thriller about Hugh Jackman punching Paul Dano into a pulp has graduated to the blockbuster big leagues. With 2021's "Dune," Villeneuve and co-writers Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth took a classic sci-fi novel long considered to be "unadaptable" and somehow delivered a crowd-pleasing hit, one that has had audiences hungry for the sequel ever since.

It isn’t every day that you hear about a director who was once involved with a project just straight up deciding to leave out of the blue but it certainly has happened in the past. The French-Canadian filmmaker, Denis Villeneuve has also allegedly pulled a similar move as the director recently revealed that will no longer be directing the HBO drama series, The Son.

As “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” continues to dominate the box office, one three-screen arthouse movie theater in Milwaukee will also show films starring several of Taylor Swift’s past boyfriends.
Cara Ogburn, artistic director of Oriental Theater overseer Milwaukee Film, brainstormed the idea in response to the requirement that theaters can only show “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” Thursdays through Sundays.
“What if we show all Jake Gyllenhaal movies,” Ogburn, who was interviewed by The New York Times, recalled suggesting initially as a joke. “True counterprogramming.”

Not only did polarizing, villainous Exocomp Peanut Hamper (Kether Donohue) return in the latest episode, but so did evil computer Agimus (Jeffrey Combs) and corrupted AI hologram Badgey (Jack McBrayer). In an episode that plays around with longstanding "Star Trek" ideas about rogue sentient technology, the Cerritos crew spends much of their time in "A...

In the span of less than a decade, Denis Villeneuve has managed to ascend the ranks of recognizable, name-brand writer/directors to become one of the most reliable, challenging, and consistent visionary filmmakers around ... but it's safe to say he wouldn't have made it this far if it weren't for a much lesser-known thriller that helped put him on the map. 2013's "Enemy," based on José Saramago's novel "The Double," has incited all sorts of fascinating discussions and analysis across film circles, mostly for its utterly confounding imagery, difficult and disturbing themes, and perhaps one of the most terrifying and controversial final shots of any movie made this century. Viewers who've seen "Enemy" for the first time typically come away with strong opinions about the very last scene, which we'll get to in a moment, but every second preceding that chilling conclusion demands just as much attention and focus.

Imagine if there is another version of us in a parallel world somewhere. That very thought is frightening itself, but imagine if that other version lives in our same world. That sounds fine considering the world is big and people can live in different parts of the world. But, what if, that version lives nearby and it is just a matter of time before we bump into them? This is exactly the premise of this film. Subtraction is a brilliantly made, intense, fast-paced sci-fi thriller that keeps you engaged the whole time. Director Mani Haghighi has made a film that is technically magnificent in every regard while telling a story of identity, anxiety and trust in a male dominant hierarchical society.

Rogues are one of the best classes in Baldur’s Gate 3 for roleplaying purposes. Sticking to the shadows, deceiving your foes, picking pockets whenever possible…Rogues fulfill a specific role-playing fantasy in ways that other classes simply can not. Of course, learning to get as much out of the Rogue class during combat as you do outside of combat can take a lot of practice and effort. That’s where this build comes in.
This particular Rogue build emphasizes the class’ stealth and ranged attack abilities in order to ensure that you maximize every Rogue attack without having to constantly keep Rogues in the fray. At the same time, it should allow you to utilize most of the out-of-combat features that often make the Rogue class special.
Before we get into that, though, please note that the current online Baldur’s Gate 3 character builder tools haven’t been updated for...

Rising NYC act Oxymorrons have announced their debut full-length album, Melanin Punk, arriving October 20th via Mascot Records. The new song and third single “Graveyard Words” is out now.
Citing influences such as Turnstile and Kid Cudi, Oxymorrons have burst onto the scene with a genre-defying blend of hip-hop, alt-rock, and punk — as heard on “Graveyard Words.” This particular track leans more toward the Turnstile comparison, with hooks and lyrics unfolding at a torrid pace.
“It’s about speaking with intentions,” Oxymorrons remarked in a collective statement on the track. “Words carry weight and you can manifest positivity but also negativity with the things you say – on the extreme side of the spectrum it could cost you your life. It’s about the laws of attraction through words. The chorus sounds like a threat coming from an individual — like ‘yo watch yer mouth or I’ll f*ck you up...

Warner Bros has had a lot of luck with one particular fall festival route – a world premiere at Venice followed by a North American premiere at TIFF. Indeed, this particular route paid off, big time, for A Star is Born, Joker and Dune, but it looks like a Venice bow for Dune: Part 2 isn’t in the cards. As Deadline explains, the film won’t be ready to premiere on the Lido at the end of August due to the complicated VFX work. The film is still on track to meet its early November global launch, and Deadline says the studio still hopes for a fall festival bow.
If the studio wants a high-profile launch, they only have two options, the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. TIFF runs from September 7th to the 7th, just a few weeks after Venice, so it seems unlikely...

Denis Villeneuve has emerged as one of the most visionary directors working in the Hollywood studio system thanks to a string of critically acclaimed films such as “Prisoners,” “Sicario,” “Arrival,” and “Blade Runner 2049.” That’s saying nothing of Villeneuve’s challenging indie fare, from “Enemy” to “Incendies” and more. Is this what it looks like to peak too soon?
Back in September, when Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, the audience was so moved that its star Brendan Fraser received a six-minute standing ovation that brought Fraser to tears. The same thing happened at the festival in Toronto a week later. This standing O reportedly lasted only five minutes that second time, but when people are measuring the length of your sustained applause, it’s a pretty good place to be. The buzz on Fraser’s prosthetic-enhanced performance in the film as Charlie, a reclusive gay 600-pound man in the final throes of eating himself to death who’s struggling to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Sink from “Stranger Things”) before it’s too late, was strong and getting stronger in advance of the film’s December release.
