Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a Bridgerton spinoff series that shows us how life was in the Ton during the early days of Queen Charlotte and King George’s marriage. We get to see how they meet and fall in love, how her reign leads to social change in the Ton, and how she became the strong and influential Queen that we see in Bridgerton’s first two seasons. But just because this series introduces us to younger versions of familiar characters doesn’t mean that it’s stuck in the past. Queen Charlotte also features an arc set in the “present day” Regency era of the original series that focuses on Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton’s friendship.
Between both eras, Queen Charlotte has a massive cast full of new and familiar faces. If you want to be as up to date on the hot gossip of the ton as Lady Whistledown,...

Amanda Abbington has revealed she believes “nepotism” helped land her role in hit BBC drama Sherlock.
Abbington was cast as Mary Watson, the wife of Sherlock Holmes’ friend and detective partner Doctor John Watson in 2014. At the time, Abbington was in a long-term relationship with Martin Freeman, who played Watson.
“Because I was with Martin at the time, there was a lot of [accusations of] nepotism being banded about,” she told the Full Disclosure podcast. “It’s true, it was that.
“Both Mark [Gatiss] and Steven [Moffat, the show’s writers] said they were trying to figure out who the best person would be to play Mary and they thought it would be the person who was going out with him.
“It made sense. And we’d worked together on many things.”

Ever since “Mad Men” led to the surfeit of mid-century modern furniture on every design blog, period dramas have been television’s bread and butter — creating an abundance of shows that are as enjoyable for their eye-watering design as for their dramatic storytelling. Hit shows like “The Crown,” “The Queen’s Gambit, and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” may have first lured viewers with their plucky women characters, sure, but the ornate wallpapers and enviable wardrobes kept them coming back for more. No matter how critical these shows purport to be of the elite classes they portray, such candy-colored visuals never fail to add a veneer of romanticism cloaking the sexism, classism, and racism that lurks in the shadows.
Delivering sumptuous visuals of a different ilk is “A Suitable Boy,” a six-part BBC miniseries set in 1950s India, during the country’s first years of independence from British colonial rule. The entire...

As a most unusual holiday season begins, it’s going to be harder for streaming services to demand our attention. With its new releases for December 2020, Amazon Prime is trying its best anyway.
This is actually an uncommonly jam-packed and intriguing roster of content for Bezos’s outfit. The list this month is highlighted by the release of The Expanse season 5 on Dec. 16. The beloved sci-fi series made the jump from Syfy to Amazon last year and things went well enough that it’s coming back for more. That returning show is complemented by another new genre series. The Wilds premieres on Dec. 11 and will follows a group of teenage girls lost (or Lost) on a deserted island.

Hard as it is to believe with everything going on right now, but Christmas is only about five weeks away, and the streaming market is already looking crowded. Although Netflix can probably expect to continue their dominance over subscribers through the end of 2020, Amazon Prime are releasing some notable titles for the last month of the year, including original films like I’m Your Woman and new episodes of The Expanse.
In terms of the former, it stars Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in a picture about a woman who has to go on the run after her husband gets into trouble with his business partner. We’ll also be seeing the much-anticipated Sound of Metal, which features Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer who develops hearing loss. An ambitious original drama about Black Tudors living in 17th-century London is in the works for U.K. streamer BritBox.
Produced by ITV Studios-backed Silverprint Pictures, “Southwark” is in paid development for the BBC and ITV-backed SVOD platform. Set in the 1600s, the series will be written by novelist and screenwriter Catherine Johnson, best known for the 2004 Ashley Walters-fronted film “Bullet Boy.”
The story, which was inspired by Miranda Kaufmann’s historical book “Black Tudors,” will combine both factual and fictional characters as well as true events to reflect a different perspective of Tudor England.
The Tudor period technically spanned the late 1400s to early 1600s, and “Black Tudors” is set towards the end of the era, in 1600. Kaufmann’s book focuses on the stories of 10 Africans who came to England from Africa, Europe and the Spanish Caribbean and lived in England during the Tudor and Stuart times.

London and Los Angeles-based “The Little Drummer Girl” producer The Ink Factory has appointed former Big Light Productions executive Maggie Boden as director of development.
Working out of the London office, Boden will report into Ink Factory creative director Katherine Butler, former scripted creative director for Raw and deputy head of film at Film4.
Boden was most recently a development producer for Frank Spotniz’s Big Light Productions, and BBC Drama Studios, where she worked alongside Hilary Salmon and Neil McKay (“Appropriate Adult”). Prior to that, Boden worked as a development producer at Mainstreet Pictures, where her credits span drama projects for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky, including “Mr Selfridge”, “Scott and Bailey” and “Agatha Christie’s Poirot.”
Her appointment follows distributor Endeavor Content taking a minority stake in Ink Factory in February — a deal that specifically targets the U.S. market with high-end TV series developed out of Ink Factory’s U.

Welcome to an April that’s sure to be unlike any other. Usually this time of year means getting outdoors in the nice weather or catching a baseball game or two. Obviously 2020 had different plans for us all. Now Amazon Prime has unveiled its new releases for April 2020 to give us an idea of what indoor entertainment options we have.
April 2020 is pretty thin on original series for Amazon Prime. Thankfully two of the few launches are big ones. Sci-fi anthology series Tales from the Loop launches on April 3 and looks to be quite bingeable. Amazon Prime is no stranger to sci-fi anthologies thanks to Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams but this one seems to kick it up a notch. Arriving on April 17 is the sixth season of Bosch as well.

If you needed reminding why Britain’s biggest broadcasters are stacking their eggs in a BritBox-shaped basket, then look no further than ITV’s third-quarter earnings this week. Tucked away in a table was a figure not mentioned elsewhere in the press release: the revelation that ITV’s total viewing hours fell by 700M in the nine months to September — a trend that has got more acute as the year has gone on.
Spiraling viewing is true at all the major British broadcasters, with people watching 50 fewer minutes of traditional TV a day than they did in 2010, according to Ofcom. At the same time, growth in streaming is exploding, and nearly half of UK households are now signed up to at least one service.

Blumhouse's remake of The Invisible Man arrives in February. Here's what we know about the studio's latest monster movie!
The Invisible Man, the classic Universal monster movie based on H.G. Wells's novel, lives again in a new reboot from Universal and Blumhouse.
This reboot stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen, the London-born actor best known as Luke Crain on Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, which – in its depiction of the character’s struggles with addiction and past trauma – impressed the film’s creative team enough to clinch the lead role, for which he brings an applicable skill set to the Invisible Man’s gradual emotional descent into villainy and murder. His character will (dis)appear opposite Elisabeth Moss, who co-stars as the focus of the title character's ire.
Leigh Whannell directed the film, having worked off her own adaptation script of the Wells story.

Natalie Dormer took an onscreen hiatus following her Summer 2016 “Game of Thrones” exit. Next month, however, she stars in both Amazon’s limited series “Picnic at Hanging Rock” and a film that marks her first foray into screenwriting.
“In Darkness” will introduce audiences to Dormer’s Sofia, a blind London pianist and the accidental eavesdropper on her upstairs neighbor’s (Emily Ratajkowski of “Gone Girl”) murder. Law enforcement first deems Veronique’s death a suicide, but at least one investigator has his doubts. The trailer opens with Sofia answering his questions, and a flashback confirms that Veronique — the daughter of an alleged war criminal — knew she was in trouble: She slipped Sofia what appears to be a key during an elevator ride.
Soon the criminals realize they must stop Sofia from revealing what she knows. During their hunt, Sofia’s anxiety of being unable to identify her foes increases from...

China Miéville’s The City & The City is a novel that blends crime procedural with high concept fantasy. It focuses on a detective, a murder investigation, two overlapping locales, and an ancient legend.
