- A large crowd waits for Rahul Jaykar (Aditya Roy Kapoor) to perform at a stage show in Goa. Rahul is more than 2 hours late and his unprofessional conduct is increasing over a period of time. Rahul is a successful musician whose career is waning because of his alcohol addiction. After nearly completing a song, he is unexpectedly interrupted by Aryan (Salil Acharya) during his performance, who throws 2 water bottles at Rahul. Aryan is a talented singer but is frustrated that nobody is willing to give him a chance. Aryan wants to provoke Rahul into a reaction, and this is exactly what he gets.
Rahul fights him, stops his performance. Rahul's manager tells him that after doing shows in locations such as London, New York, today nobody wants to work with Rahul, and so it is almost the end of the line for him. He is shunned by music directors, film industry, stage shows and even pop albums. This is why they are down to performing shows in small cities. Rahul drives to a local bar. On his way over, Rahul remembers his own journey from an ordinary back-up singer to a mega star who won many awards and performed to stadiums full of people all over the world.
He meets Aarohi Keshav Shirke (Shraddha Kapoor), a Maharashtrian bar singer who idolizes Rahul. Aarohi sings Rahul's songs in the bar and steals money from bar tips to survive. After noticing Aarohi looking at a photograph of Lata Mangeshkar in the bar, he assumes that she wants to become a singer. Rahul is mesmerized by listening to his own song in Aarohi's voice. Impressed by her simplicity and voice, Rahul promises to transform her into a singing sensation, and asks her to never perform again in bars. Rahul says that he is in love but cannot decide if it with Aarohi or with her voice. Shankar (Partha Akerkar) the manager of the bar, demands Rs 25,000 from Aarohi to release her from her contract. Shankar also says that Rahul is himself out of a job, and has no prospects. But then Rahul intervenes, pays off the manager, and asks Aarohi to come to Mumbai. Aarohi quits her job and returns to Mumbai with Rahul, who convinces record producer Saigal (Mahesh Thakur) to meet her.
Aarohi goes to live with her parents, and Rahul asks her to call him as soon as she gets her new SIM card. She tells her mother that she left her job in Goa and came back to Mumbai as a famous singer promised her a chance to sing in films. The family lives in poverty and her mother is livid as she was counting on Aarohi's earnings to pay for expenses. She says that now she will have to borrow money to keep the house going.
When Aarohi calls Rahul, he is attacked and injured by some goons (who beat up Rahul on behalf of the Goa producer whose show Rahul abandoned mid-way) and is unable to receive her call. His friend and manager Vivek (Shaad Randhawa) says that news of Rahul's accident should not be leaked to the media, and instead publicizes a false story that Rahul has left the country to participate in stage shows. When Aarohi attempts to contact Rahul again, Vivek ignores the calls. When Rahul asks, Vivek lies that Aarohi hasn't call yet. After two months of fruitlessly attempting to contact Rahul, a broken Aarohi is forced to sing in bars again because of her family problems. Aarohi has to support her parents Keshav (Milind Phatak) and Subhadra (Shubhangi Latkar).
After recovering from his injuries, Rahul vows to search for Aarohi. He learns from his building guard that Aarohi has tried to contact him several times and realizes that Vivek had ignored her calls without informing him. Rahul confronts Vivek, who says that he intentionally kept Aarohi away from Rahul, as he wanted Rahul to put the effort in resurrecting himself rather than making the career of a random girl. Rahul says that he has accepted that he is a spent force, and now everything is about Aarohi. Rahul apologizes to Aarohi and sacks Vivek, and they meet with Saigal for the recording contract. Saigal says that Aarohi needs a little training before she can be ready for playback singing. Rahul agrees to train her.
Rahul begins to train Aarohi, and she successfully records her first song. She signs a music contract to sing in films and becomes a successful playback singer. Rahul falls in love with Aarohi. Her family and Rahul are happy, but when people begin to gossip that Rahul is using her as a servant, he relapses into alcohol addiction.
Rahul tells Aarohi that now she has success and fame and tells her to move on and live her life. He wants Aarohi to go away before he becomes her enemy. Aarohi, who loves Rahul more than her career, comforts him and they make love. Despite Aarohi's mother's disapproval, Aarohi moves in with Rahul and things go well. Vivek apologizes to Rahul, and he forgives Vivek. Rahul also agrees to start working again, starting even with small time gigs. Rahul's addiction worsens (specifically when the small-time producers tell him that his voice has gone flat and Rahul realizes that his career is over), causing him to become aggressive and violent. Aarohi sees Rahul stealing money from her wallet.
To help Rahul fight his alcoholism, Aarohi attempts to rehabilitate Rahul, sacrificing her singing career in doing so. After Saigal reminds them about their dream of Aarohi becoming a successful singer, Rahul orders her to focus on her work. During Aarohi's stage show, Rahul meets a journalist backstage, who accuses him of using Aarohi for pleasure and money. Furious, Rahul beats up the journalist and starts drinking.
He ends up in jail, and Aarohi comes to bail him out. Rahul overhears Aarohi telling Saigal that she is going to sacrifice her career for him and is ready to give up her celebrity status because Rahul is more important to her. Rahul understands that he has become a burden in her life, and that leaving her is his only option to save her. The next day he bids her farewell and commits suicide.
Distraught by Rahul's death, Aarohi decides to quit her career, but Vivek persuades her to stay. He reminds her that Rahul wanted her to become a successful singer and has given his life as he did not want to be a burden on her. Aarohi agrees and resumes her career as a singer.
Later, she signs her name as "Aarohi Rahul Jaykar" in a fan's handbook as a tribute to Rahul and her unsung desire to marry him. As rain starts falling, she watches the couple who took her autograph sharing a romantic moment under a jacket as she and Rahul had done when he was alive.
