Season Four Review
southdavid17 October 2022
I said in my review of the third season of "Brassic" that I still felt positively about it, even though diminishing returns had maybe started to set in a little. At the end of this fourth season, though I do still think that the show is repeating its storylines a bit, the performances and script generate enough goodwill to keep me watching.

Vinnie (Joseph Gilgun) has been bereft since Erin (Michelle Keegan) skipped town and took Tyler (Jude Riordan) with her. Doctor Cox (Dominic West) uses his NHS connections to provide him with an address where he might be. Meanwhile the incarceration of Terrance McCann (Ramon Tikaram) leaves a power vacuum at the top of the criminal underworld, one that the psychotic Davey MacDonagh (Neil Ashton) wants to fill and he wants to use the lads weed farm as the basis of his empire.

Again, there's a lot of familiar stuff in this season to what we've seen before. Heists, scams and schemes go wrong as this time the gang try to get themselves out from under the clutches of a different, but similarly dangerous gangster. Indeed, it's this new threat that makes the season feel increasingly dangerous and serious as it runs on. There are stories about people trafficking and fertility issues and the ending of the season, which looks very dark indeed and, from what I understand, will have ramifications for the next season.

It's still mostly a comedy though, and often laugh out loud funny. The highlight episode for that is episode Six, "Murder Mystery" which sees the gang rob a wine cellar of a large house during a murder mystery evening, with Steve Pemberton and Zoe Telford as the hosts. Performances across the cast remain really strong and the semi-improvised sound to the dialogue works really well.

So, it's more of the same for this season of "Brassic", with perhaps a few darker moments than we've seen before. Looking forward to season five.
