Spain’s film and TV industries are in their second wave as standout content providers for global streamers. Some of the country’s most intriguing titles will take the international stage this weekend at MipTV in Cannes.
Built on a foundation of hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet” and “Locked Up,” a new era of internationally renowned content creation in Spain kicked off in 2018 with Alex Pina’s blockbuster series “Money Heist,” picked up by Netflix.
Since then, Spain has enjoyed a place among the steadiest content suppliers for major players worldwide, taking advantage of its often character-driven dramas, high-quality creators and producers, and a language spoken by more than 600 million people around the globe.
Although the market is continuously evolving, local industry has adapted to different new business models, entering bigger and more ambitious productions, often via co-production. Spanish fiction’s global popularity continues to grow to accommodate audience appetites.

Fipca, Ibero America’s huge producers’ federation, is looking to power up the region’s knowledge economy and co-production as two longterm answers to huge volatility in its member states film-tv sectors.
That drive cuts several ways, Fipca president Ignacio Rey told Variety in the run-up to Sanfic Industria, one of South America’s biggest industry events.
High-end Netflix, Amazon and other streamer originals, imply new ways of producing: “We’re lacking sufficient labor force capacity for a certain scale of productions,” Rey argued.
Challenges abound. In 2022, only movies from Spain, Dominican Republic and Argentina punched home theatrical market shares of over 5%, running up 22.4%, 14.0% and 8.1% shares respectively, according to the Cannes Marché du Film’s Focus 2023 report.
Platform hits is another matter. Over July 2022-June 2023, five of Prime Video’s Top 10 most seen non-English language films or series hailed from Spain or Latin America, led by Spain’s “My Fault” and Chile’s “Sayen.

Driving into Spanish-language movies and series, Amazon Studios is hoping to repeat the success of “Argentina, 1985” with big Spanish period production “Hildegart,” starring Najwa Nimri and Alba Planas (“Skam España”), which wrapped production Aug. 19 in Madrid.
“Hildegart” has shot in the Spanish capital filming seven weeks and some days at historical heritage sites such as Spain’s Congress, Madrid’s Puerta del Sol central square, and its Atheneum.
Directed by Paula Ortiz, “Hildegart” is a fact-based tale of the extraordinary and tragic life of Spain’s Hildegart Rodríguez, born in 1914, a child prodigy raised by her mother to be a model for future women, who gave conferences on feminism and sexuality from the age of 11, writing on prostitution, contraception and eugenics – her monograph “Profilaxis anticoncepcional” sold 8,000 copies in one week just in Madrid – and accompanied H.G. Wells when he made a visit to Spain.

Toledo, Spain — The tide has changed. Just one year after Disney+ dazzled with “Santa Evita,” a banner title from its extraordinary swathe of Latin American originals, the 7th Conecta Fiction & Entertainment caught the mood of a larger international market with panelists in its conference strand focusing often on market challenges, when a feeding fever for premium content dominated conversations in recent editions. That said, running June 26-29 in Toledo, in market attendance and insight and shows brought to market, Cf&e fairly rocked.
10 takeaways from this year’s edition:
Conecta Fiction Booms
Despite Toledo’s sweltering in a hot snap, even by Spanish standards, Conecta Fiction’s attendance sky-rocketed to 1,031 accredited professionals, an all-time record and 42% up on figures announced at the end of 2022’s edition. Reasons abound. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas, to touch base with production partners, new ideas. It’s really interesting to see...

Spanish-language content is a growing segment of the American video marketplace. Latino audiences are more likely to watch content on streaming platforms than via broadcast TV, and more streamers are boosting their output of Spanish shows and movies to meet demand.
The latest example is Prime Video, which recently debuted the new Spanish romance film “My Fault,” or “Culpa Mia.” The move follows Noah, who must leave her city, boyfriend, and friends to move into William Leister’s mansion. William is a flashy millionaire who has captured the heart of Noah’s mother, and he also has a child from a previous relationship; his 17 year-old son Nick. Nick and Noah’s strong personalities clash immediately, but soon other, more forbidden feelings begin to arise between the two.

Prime Video has revealed its top traveling non-English local originals in the history of the service, with Spanish YA romance “My Fault” and French crime thriller “Medellín” topping the list.
Both are feature films that launched in the last two weeks across Prime Video’s footprint in 240 countries around the world. Interestingly, both titles have more than 75% of their viewership coming from outside their country of origin, though Prime Video hasn’t disclosed any further metrics related to ratings or impressions. Of the list (available in full below), 60% are movies and 40% are TV series.

Here’s a shocker: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” after recently debuting on both Disney+ and Max, was the most-streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker. Whip Media’s ranker is based on data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with 26 million global registered users.
That probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering James Cameron’s latest “Avatar” movie raked in $2.3 billion at the box office — No. 3 for all time and a post-pandemic record. Still, the streaming crown is another impressive feat, especially when you consider a few other popular movies including “Creed III” made their streaming debuts this past week as well.
One thing that’s stood out so far about “The Way of Water” on streaming has been how balanced its audience is.
For starters, its audience is split almost equally among men...

Culpa Mia, a Spanish romantic drama based on Mercedes Ron’s novel of the same name, presents a controversial and uncomfortable storyline that revolves around a forbidden love between step-siblings. The film’s plot feels drawn out and lacks compelling elements, making it a tedious and uncomfortable viewing experience. It is not surprising that some viewers choose to stop watching after just thirty minutes. Culpa Mia (or My Fault) revolves around Noah, a young woman who falls in love with her stepbrother Nicholas, and their attempts to normalize their semi-incestuous relationship.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In ‘Culpa Mia’?
Noah’s mother, Rafaella, brought her to the luxurious mansion of her newlywed husband, William Leister. Despite the mansion’s splendor, it didn’t seem like a home to Noah since she wasn’t very fond of living in luxury. She was already upset about leaving behind her old life,...

How often do you come across a film that gives you the hope of enjoying a guilty pleasure-watch but ends up being the most frustrating two hours of your life? Culpa mia, loosely translated to My Fault, is a Spanish Prime Video original written and directed by Domingo González and adapted from Mercedes Ron’s novel of the same name. Culpa mia is all about a tale of forbidden love gone wrong in its entirety.
The movie begins with Noah and her mother, Rafaella, moving in with her newly rich husband, William Leister, uprooting the young 17-year-old’s life as she sulks over the idea of meeting new people. Though the stepfather turns out to be very accommodating, his oldest son Nicholas, aka Nick, is attracted to Noah, and the feeling is mutual for her as well. Their forbidden steamy encounters lead to many uncomfortable scenes, and the kids try...

My Fault is a Spanish film written and directed by Domingo González and is based on the novel by Mercedes Ron. It stars Nicole Wallace and Gabriel Guevara.
A film that goes beyond film criticism and is beyond neorealism, nouvelle vague and all the pedantry you can think of.
Pure “mischievousness” at the service of testosterone, estrogen, and the hottest youth eager to have a very, very good time.
Movie Review
Just by how it begins you already know that this is what it’s all about: a lot of music that requires pills to be able to enjoy it, car races, bands and a pinch of class struggle to, all mixed with a very badass sauce, come up with this film designed only and exclusively for young people.
Poor quality in the dialogues and situations… good editing, though. Characters that go nowhere, a story that could have been spared…...

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.
The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...
