MaryAnn’s quick take… Furious, funny, and deadly serious, this is an audacious, searing satire that swells into a raw, electrifying fantasy about how we might put aside savagery. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
A full year after it opened in the Us, Spike Lee’s latest film, the outraged and outrageous Chi-Raq, is finally opening in the UK. Yet after a summer of Black Lives Matter protests and racially charged politics on both sides of the Atlantic, it still feels entirely of the moment. In a Chicago so beset by violent death that it’s more like the ongoing war zone of Iraq than any city in the supposedly greatest country in the world should be, a child is caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout… and her death is the last...

On November 23, 2012, Michael Dunn, a middle-aged white man, shot and killed black 17-year-old Jordan Russell Davis at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida, for the most absurd of reasons: because Davis and his friends were playing loud music.
Nearly three years later, the case is at the center of the documentary 3 1/2 Minutes, 10 Bullets, which focuses on Davis' life before and during the attack, and how Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground self-defense law played into Dunn's subsequent murder trial. (The defendant told authorities he fired into the teenager's vehicle because he...

Cold in July
Written by Jim Mickle and Nick Damici
Directed by Jim Mickle
USA, 2014
Indie auteur Jim Mickle (We Are What We Are) has said that his newest effort Cold in July is a combination of Bong Joon-Ho’s serial-murder thriller Memories of Murder and the Patrick Swayze action film Road House. That’s an eye-catching pairing, for certain, but it’s unfortunate that Cold in July doesn’t live up to the promise of such a wild mash-up.
Dexter’s Michael C. Hall plays Richard Dane, who encounters an intruder in his house late one night in 1989 and shoots him dead. Almost everyone, from the law to Dane’s neighbors, thinks this a clear case of a good guy successfully drawing down on a bad guy. The only exception is the father of the deceased, an ex-con played by an appropriately terrifying Sam Shepard, who is soon making threats against the Dane family.

Welcome back to the Game of Thrones TV Book Club, a discussion space for Thrones viewers who have also read the five books (so far) of George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series. This week, Hillary Busis and Thrones recapper extraordinaire James Hibberd — filling in for Darren Franich — talk changes at Craster’s Keep, tension between Arya and the Hound, and the Case of the Disappearing Dragons. (You know there’ll be spoilers for all the books and the show, right?)
Hillary: Welcome to the club, James! We are a brotherhood without banners — but with tons of nerd cred.

Curtis Reeves, the 71-year-old retired police captain who killed a man after an argument over texting during a screening of "Lone Survivor," told detectives that he fired his gun because he was under attack when the victim, Chad Oulson, hit him in the face with an unknown object. Investigators later learned from witnesses that Oulson had tossed popcorn at Reeves. No punches were thrown. Police dismissed the notion that Reeves was exercising his right to self-defense. Facing life in prison, Reeves still decided to move forward with a self-defense claim. And since the incident took place in Florida, where the altercation between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin happened, the state's Stand Your Ground law will likely come into play. "It was not proven to us that it was a Stand Your Ground incident," said Sheriff Chris Nocco. And a judge denied Reeves bail, stating: "evidence of guilt is significant." Meanwhile,...

Today's MPAA ratings bulletin offers up a trio of highly anticipated December releases, however, the ratings for each aren't exactly surprising. David O. Russell's American Hustle and Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street earned the obvious R ratings while Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug comes away with the expected PG-13. The possible animated awards contender from Gkids, Ernest and Celestine, comes away with a PG as it was recently announced it will have a limited New York and Los Angeles release next March, where it hopes to use an Oscar nomination to help sell some tickets. Then come the 2014 releases with Heaven is for Real starring Greg Kinnear and Million Dollar Arm, the Disney feature starring Jon Hamm, Bill Paxton and Lake Bell. Check out the full ratings bulletin directly below. American Hustle Rated R For pervasive language, some sexual content and brief violence.

Trayvon Martin's mother Sybrina Fulton -- whose son was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in early 2012 -- appeared at a hearing regarding the controversial "Stand Your Ground" laws on Tuesday (Oct. 29) on Capitol Hill. During the hearing, witnesses testified on the self-protection laws, and the hearing focused on the origins of these laws, their impact on the legal definition of self-defense, whether they provoke unnecessary shooting confrontations, and if they encourage racial profiling.
But when it came time for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-tx) to speak at the hearing, he informed the still-grieving mother that the laws are not racist, and actually benefit African-Americans as much as, if not more than, they do whites.
Cruz began his speech by offering his condolences for Fulton's loss, but defended the trial by jury process that found Zimmerman not guilty of murder and went on to further defend that the laws were not...
