Nearly a year after Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert swept the Oscars with their indie multiverse blockbuster “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the filmmaking duo has lined up a new project that should see them working on their biggest canvas yet.
Universal has given a July 12, 2026 release date to an untitled “event film” written and directed by the Daniels (via The Hollywood Reporter). While no information has been offered about the plot or cast, the studio backing ensures that it will almost certainly be the largest scale project that the indie-film darlings have taken on to date. The film will be the first project produced under the five-year deal that the Daniels signed with Universal in 2022.
“Daniels are creators who have evolved their craft with a distinct vision and singular voice that is unmistakable across the spectrum of content vying for viewer’s attention,” Universal Pictures chair Donna Langley said...

Gerard Butler is returning to the How to Train Your Dragon fold, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The actor will reprise the father role of Stoick the Vast in the live-action remake that hails from original co-director Dean DeBlois.
The Black Phone‘s Mason Thames and The Last of Us‘ Nico Parker are leading the project, playing Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel in the original) and Astrid (America Ferrera), respectively. Universal has set a June 13, 2025 date for the project.
The original DreamWorks Animation trilogy was based on the books by Cressida Cowell, and told the story of a viking boy and his dragon, Toothless. The trilogy was released from 2010-19 and grossed more than $1.6 billion globally.
Marc Platt is producing via Marc Platt Productions alongside Adam Siegel, president of Platt’s banner. Lexi Barta is overseeing for Universal.

Mark Goddard, who played Major Don West, the hot-tempered pilot of the Jupiter 2, on the 1960s CBS adventure series Lost in Space, has died. He was 87.
Goddard died Tuesday in Hingham, Massachusetts, his wife Evelyn Pezzulich told The Hollywood Reporter.
Goddard had worked as a regular on the Four Star Television series Johnny Ringo and The Detectives when he was approached by his agent about coming aboard the new Lost on Space, created and produced by Irwin Allen.
The sci-fi show revolved around the adventures of the Robinson family: Professor John Robinson (Guy Williams), his biochemist wife, Maureen (June Lockhart) and their children Judy, Penny and Will (Marta Kristen, Angela Cartwright and Billy Mumy).
Major West also was on board, as was a stowaway, Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris), and a robot (designed by Forbidden Planet‘s Robert Kinoshita, played by Bob May and voiced by Dick Tufeld). Their space colonization mission,...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the beloved actress died Wednesday of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills.
She was 96.
Coates first appeared in the superhero universe opposite George Reeves in the 1951 movie Superman and the Mole Men.
The movie was a roaring success and paved the way for the syndicated TV series The Adventures of Superman.
While the series lasted six seasons and had a devoted following, Coates stepped away following the first.
Noel Neill took over the role for the next five seasons, keeping Lois Lane a part of the franchise.

When Kieran Culkin confirmed in late April that he will submit in Best Drama Actor at the Emmys for the fourth and final season of “Succession” after two supporting bids, it set off a flurry of reactions. One was that it’s the correct call, given the increased focus on Roman (Culkin), Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) this season in the wake of Logan’s (Brian Cox) death in the third episode. Another was that he would split the vote with Strong, the 2020 champ, and Cox, who later confirmed he was staying in lead, paving the way for someone else to triumph. But if either Culkin or Cox pulls out the win, though the latter seems less likely, “Succession” will join rarefied air as one of just two series to win the category for two different people.

There will be no more bombshells in Los Angeles' courtrooms.
Deadline reported that HBO has opted not to renew Perry Mason for a third season.
The news comes close to two months after Season 2 bowed out.
“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline.
“While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects,” the statement concluded.
While the news is shocking, it is not surprising because of the significant delay on HBO's part in dishing out a third season renewal after or during Perry Mason Season 2.

“Our job is to fight for the show,” reveals executive producer Susan Downey on the goal for any good producer on series like their period drama “Perry Mason” and fantasy “Sweet Tooth.” For our recent webchat alongside her Team Downey partner Amanda Burrell, she adds, “We’re trying to be critical and trying to make sure we’re keeping the true north and supporting the vision of our showrunners and our filmmakers, and if you’re taking risks along the way and you’re doing things that you know make you a little bit nervous, then that’s certainly what we strive for. But you really hope that they work. So, it is nice to finally get Season 2 of both shows out into the world and see that people have been responding favorably.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Perry Mason completed its second season on HBO.
We jumped on a call with Marialy Rivas, who directed the fifth and eighth episodes.
She took us through her journey and falling in love with cinema, hailing from Chile -- which was at the height of a dictatorship regime -- and didn't have a proper film industry,
She talked about how her style informs how she approaches directing, her experience on the Perry Mason set, and how she landed the gig.
Dive in and enjoy.
You have extensive credits in directing, especially in Chilean cinema. How has that journey been?
I was born and raised in Chile.
I grew up during the Pinochet dictatorship, but I have wanted to be a filmmaker since I was seven. Chile at that time, you know, Pinochet had killed or exiled all the filmmakers and closed all film schools. So, it was a wild dream,...

Just before the end of the seventh episode of Season 2 of “Perry Mason,” the writers expose the mastermind behind the murder that Mason’s defendants — a pair of poor Mexican brothers — were paid to commit. It’s the perfect reveal in that the villain’s identity feels shocking yet inevitable upon reflection, given how intricately it’s interwoven with everything that has come before. Yet according to Michael Begler, who took over showrunning duties on “Perry Mason” this season with his writing partner Jack Amiel, the identity of the antagonist came fairly late in the process. “I think the last part [we figured out] was who done it,” Begler told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “When I really think about how we broke the season, we were rewriting and rewriting. It was changing constantly.”
Coming on to the show, Begler’s desire was to expand the series’ vision of Los Angeles. Giving “Perry...

This post contains spoilers for "Perry Mason" season 2
By far the best part about "Perry Mason" season 2 is the fact the series has given its supporting characters more to do. That goes especially for Juliet Rylance's Della Street and Chris Chalk's Paul Drake, Mason's co-counsel and investigator respectively.
As the season has played out, Drake in particular has had an emotional character arc that's seen the principled ex-cop struggle to maintain his sense of morality after enduring some fairly harrowing experiences. One such experience saw him forced to beat a low-level gangster even after he'd got the intel he needed — an act that comes back to haunt Drake in the form of the boy's orange Converse sneakers, which repeatedly reappear around L.A. in the sixth episode.
All of this is leading to what is sure to be a breaking point for Drake. And while many expected...

Since his first appearance in Erle Stanley Gardner's 1933 book "The Case of the Velvet Claws," Perry Mason has remained consistently popular due to several film, TV, and radio adaptations. But when HBO decided to reboot the private investigator turned criminal defense lawyer for the 21st century, they naturally put a new spin on the character and those around him. The hardboiled, pulpy debut season of "Perry Mason" ended with Matthew Rhys' P.I. embracing the role of a lawyer for which he's so well known, accompanied by his new lead investigator Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) and legal assistant turned co-counsel Della Street (Juliet Rylance).
But rather than Drake being the droll P.I. of previous iterations, the HBO show's version is a conflicted and embattled former LAPD street cop, struggling to support his family and navigate the treacherous landscape of a deeply racist 1930s Los Angeles. And whereas the...

This article contains spoilers for "Perry Mason" through season 2, episode 5, "Chapter Thirteen."
In its first season, HBO's pulpy, hardboiled version of "Perry Mason" introduced us to a version of Erle Stanley Gardner's famous criminal lawyer who had yet to become the formidable figure we know from previous iterations of the character. In this show, Mason is a war vet and private investigator who struggles with horrific memories of his wartime mercy killings, fights to keep hold of his family's farm, and reluctantly takes on the role of attorney after John Lithgow's E.B. Jonathan takes his own life. It's all a bit grim, really.
But with season 2, "Perry Mason" has put supporting characters front and center. While the gritty, somber tone is still there, the violence has been toned down a bit, and there are some genuine moments of joy. Many of those moments come from Juliet Rylance...

The Oscar-winning writing-directing unit of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, whimsically known as Daniels, have yet to trade in their golden chit and announce their next project. But with 2022’s juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All At Once” winning Best Picture, Best Director(s), Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (for Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (for Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Supporting Actor (for Ke Huy Quan), and Best Editing (for Paul Rogers), plus four additional nominations, on top of being A24’s most successful outing at the box office with a $107 million worldwide gross, you can imagine the sky’s the limit for these two.
Wisely looking to alleviate some of the “what’s next??!” pressure, the pair already have their next credit in the pipeline, at least according to the trades. Similar to a recording artist following up their career-making hit album with “a live one,” Daniels has (have?) already completed...

Fresh off their Oscar wins for "Everything Everywhere All At Once," Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (colloquially known as Daniels) have a new project on the horizon, and it's not the indie project you might expect. The Hollywood Reporter has just confirmed a story from One Take News revealing that the pair are set to direct at least one episode of the upcoming "Star Wars" project "Skeleton Crew."
It's currently unknown whether Daniels will be behind the camera for just one episode of "Skeleton Crew" or multiple chapters of the Disney+ series, which is executive produced by "Star Wars" team Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau along with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" filmmaker Jon Watts. "Skeleton Crew" was first unveiled in May of 2022 at Star Wars Celebration, where its crew described a series that takes place around the same time as "The Mandalorian" and features a group of kid heroes. Perry Mason‘s titular lawyer is in pretty dire straits when Season 2 begins, but a high-profile murder case could be just the thing to turn his luck around. (Though not the luck of the guy who was murdered, unfortunately.)

Season 2 of HBO's "Perry Mason" is set to premiere in mere days, and has gotten strong reviews (including from /Film's Chris Evangelista) as being a slick and stylish follow up to the episodes that came before it. The show takes place in 1930s Los Angeles and stars Matthew Rhys as the titular character, a relatively new lawyer that is flawed in all kinds of ways.
I had the chance to talk with Rhys in the lead up to the season's premiere about what it was like for him to come back to the role after a multi-year hiatus. Utopia and Showtime have partnered to acquire “Meet Me in the Bathroom,” the documentary film about the early 2000s New York City rock and roll scene that made its premiere at this year’s Sundance.
Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern directed the film that’s based on the 2017 book by Lizzy Goodman. Goodman’s book is a comprehensive oral history of the bands that redefined the rock scene in the early 2000s and late ’90s, including The Strokes, Interpol, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and more. The film specifically is an assemble of archival footage from that era and forgoes talking head interviews, instead featuring rare early performances and behind the scenes looks at NYC’s top bands.
Utopia will release the film theatrically in theaters later this year, and Showtime will air “Meet Me in the Bathroom” by the end of 2022.
