If Greta Gerwig being shut out of the best director race at the Golden Globes wasn’t already frustrating enough, it’s with great sadness IndieWire reports that “Lady Bird’s” perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes is no more. After remaining at 100% through 196 reviews and setting the record for best-reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes, “Lady Bird” has been brought down to 99% thanks to a rotten tomato from film critic Cole Smithey.

Smithey posted the movie’s first bad review on Rotten Tomatoes on December 10, noting “Lady Bird” is “far from a perfect film” and giving it a backhanded compliment by writing, “It’s not the mumblecore disaster you’d expect from Greta Gerwig – one of the mumblecore movement’s prime progenitors.” Smithey runs his own film website, whose tagline refers to Smithey as “the smartest film critic in the world.

Greta Gerwig has a story about the moment she knew she would become a director. Shortly after she starred in and co-wrote “Frances Ha” with Noah Baumbach, she met “Orlando” director Sally Potter at a party. Gerwig cornered Potter, to pick her brain.
“I do that with people I admire,” Gerwig said. “I was writing a lot. I was asking her about how she does what she does. Does she do it first thing in the morning in longhand, or many computer drafts? I was being nerdy and needy, and she was answering and being very kind.
“Then she grabbed me by the arm and looked me in the eyes and asked me, ‘What do you really want to ask me about?’ My blood ran cold. ‘You really want to ask me about directing.’
‘How do you know that?’
‘I’m part gypsy and it’s written all over you!

It’s funny how time can change your perception on things. Back in 2014, I moderated a post-screening panel for the documentary film and festival favorite, “Food Chains.” Producers Sanjay Rawal (who also directed), Smriti Kasahari, and Eva Longoria were all on hand to discuss how their film documented criminal labor practices in the U.S. food industry. “Food Chains” focused on farmers who hire illegal immigrants and drive them into debt, claiming their hourly wages, production, and general efforts to make an honest living don’t cover the costs of feeding and housing these workers.
Even though the food is slop and the housing just a crate packed with 20 men, no one questions the system because they can’t. There’s nowhere for workers to go and no one they can call for help. They live in fear of being deported or of their bosses — who physically and mentally abuse them,...

Eva Longoria may be best known for her role as the sultry Gabrielle Solis from Desperate Housewives or as a producer of Lifetime's Devious Maids and the documentary Food Chains, but if she weren't in the entertainment industry, she knows exactly what she'd be doing instead – and her answer might surprise you.
"I would definitely be in corporate America," Longoria told People at Tuesday's Svedka Summer Fiesta Celebration in Beverly Hills.
"I love business," continues Longoria, 40. In particular, she can't get enough of "using [her] brain" and says she enjoys producing because she likes the "business side of the industry."

To me it means life, it means memories," says Gerardo Reyes Chavez, a farmworker advocate featured in the documentary Food Chains. He's talking about food itself. Director Sanjay Rawal follows the activism of Chavez and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (Ciw), a group of tomato pickers who've had the audacity to ask for a penny more per pound of tomatoes, an amount they say would contribute mightily to their quality of life. In characteristic face-value fashion, they call it the Fair Food Program, and major corporate food purveyors, from Walmart to McDonald's, have signed on. With the help of accomplished photography and sometimes mournful, sometimes upbeat Latin music, the film fosters a very human connection to these pickers, whose eloquence comes from their ...

With all things "organic," "artisanal," and "locally sourced" being among the food trends of the past several years, it can be very easy to forget about the human cost of the "farm-to-table" approach. For all the advances made as such, the food industry is still far behind the times when it comes to the conditions of farm workers, and the upcoming documentary "Food Chains" aims to shine a light on those concerns. Directed by Sanjay Rawal, the film chronicles the modern day farm workers rights movement, taking us into the lives of the people who pick our food and get it on a truck long before it arrives on shelves or is ready to be ordered in restaurants. In this exclusive clip, we see quite clearly the conditions many farmworkers live in, the long hours they work to support their families, and the sacrifices endured to make ends meet. Produced...

The Eva Longoria-produced doc Food Chains is about the modern farmworkers movement, full of surprising facts about the supermarket industry (it’s bigger than the tech sector) and its relationship with the the lives and pay of farmworkers today. It follows activists in Florida – the Ciw, which was successful in brokering a recent, monumental Fair Food Agreement with Wal-Mart. Featured in the film is Eric Schlosser, Lucas Benitez (activist), and Gerardo Reyes Chavez (activist). There is more interest in food in the United States today than at any time in our history. Yet, there is very little interest in the hands that pick our food – the hundreds of thousands [ Read More ]

As executive producer Eva Longoria points out in her new documentary Food Chains, the hands that sort much of America’s food are themselves often forced to live hand-to-mouth due to exploitative policies established by businesses involved with commercial agriculture.
In an exclusive trailer for the film, Longoria joins Robert F. Kennedy Jr., fellow producer Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), and other activists in arguing to stop the systemic (and sometimes physical) abuse of farm workers while securing their rights. Oscar winner Forest Whitaker narrates Food Chains, which hits theaters Nov. 21.

Taking care of a media obligation, Eva Longoria attended Tribeca Talks: After the Movie for "Food Chains" on Saturday (April 26) in New York City.
Glowing in a figure hugging black frock, the film's producer rocked the arrivals carpet outside the Sva Theater before heading in for the talk.
Per the documentary's website: "'Food Chains' explores critical human rights issues in American agriculture from wage theft to modern-day slavery and exposes the powers that perpetuate these un-American violations of human dignity. The film stars dozens of farmworkers as well as Eva Longoria (Executive Producer), Dolores Huerta, Eric Schlosser, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Barry Estabrook, and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.

If you are like me (and every other Latino) you are sick of seeing movies where the people that look like us are only maids, janitors, undocumented immigrants or drug dealers. The Latino experience is so much more complex; it spans continents, languages, and cultures. This year’s Tribeca Film Festival, running April 16 – 27, is filled with films that offer diverse portraits of Latinos (including a few requisite drug traffickers).
There are stories about New Yorkers searching for love, a black-and-white ode to slackers set during a Mexico City student strike, a divorced Miami chef who buys a food truck (his ex-wife is played by Sofia Vergara), a Venezuelan kid who’s obsessed with having straight hair, a naive Afro-Colombian teen who gets caught up in drug smuggling (produced by Spike Lee), plus documentaries on transgender youth in Puerto Rico, Diego Maradona, soccer during the Chilean dictatorship, and the Argentinian pretty-boy boxer Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez.
Amidst the screenings are celebrities, red carpets, film talks, and immersive transmedia experiences complete with virtual reality goggles. Eva Longoria, America Ferrera, John Leguizamo, and lots of the directors are scheduled to appear.
Ticket prices aren’t cheap. (Do they have a minority scholarship?) But this year, thanks to a corporate sponsor that shall go unnamed all screenings on Friday, April 25 are Free! To help you plan your movie marathon staycation here’s a list of all the Latino movies and events at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival.

Visit Films’ Efm slate includes six other titles, among them Benjamin Naishtat’s Competition entry History Of Fear and Sanjay Rawal’s Culinary Cinema selection Food Chains.
