The search for and killing of Osama Bin Laden is dramatized again in Zero Dark Thirty.
The same story was detailed in the movie Seal Team Six: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden, released on video-on-demand then DVD and Blu-ray in January 2013. But Zero Dark Thirty has bigger name actors and was screened on the big screen. The film was even nominated for five Academy Awards.
Zero Dark Thirty stars Jessica Chastain (The Help) as Maya, the female CIA operative who tracked the location of Osama Bin Laden. Her information sent Seal Team 6 onto the historical mission.
Jason Clarke (Lawless), James Gandolfini (Killing Them Softly), Kyle Chandler (Argo), Mark Strong (Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy), Joel Edgerton (Warrior), Frank Grillo (End of Watch) and Chris Pratt (The Five-Year Engagement) are also in the movie, which...

Oscar-winning actor Chris Cooper has taken the lead role in "Klondike" (that's a working title), the first-ever scripted miniseries from Discovery Channel. The drama, which was announced last year, is not, alas, about the invention of a delicious frozen dessert, but is instead adapted from Charlotte Gray's book "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," about six of the people who traveled out to a remote region of northwest Canada as part of the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800s. "Klondike" is a co-production between Discovery, eOne and Nomadic Pictures in association with Scott Free Television. Like other networks who've built their brand on nonfiction programming, including History ("Hatfields & McCoys") and National Geographic ("Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden"), Discovery's making a first foray into the realms of scripted TV here and clearly aiming for prestige. The first thing I ever got to review here at JustPressPlay was AMC’s Hell on Wheels starring Anson Mount. Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden also stars Anson Mount. Am I the only writer on staff who’s reviewed more than one Anson Mount program? If so, that makes me his fanboy. Which is fine by me. In this flick, he plays “Cherry,” the southern hick member of the famous squad that took down Osama Bin Laden.
Let’s just get the obvious out of the way, shall we? It’s hard not measuring this film against Zero Dark Thirty. Kathryn Bigelow’s dissection of the American intelligence community’s efforts to take down the Most Wanted man on the planet is easily one of my favorite films of the past thirty years. I’m a...

With all the attention Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty is getting as the headlining drama on the hunt and takedown of Usama Bin Laden, and its potentially ethical quandary of changing the truth to fit its own desired narrative or simply telling a truth the government wished kept secret, it's easy to overlook any other iterations on that story that have been made into films recently. Among those are John Stockwell's Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden, which deals more with the bang bang than it does the legwork, and stars Cam Gigandet, Kathleen Robertson, Xzibit, and Anson Mount. So if you wish Zero Dark Thirty was less Jessica Chastain chat and more terrorist splat, then this one might be for you.

Billed as a Barack Obama election fillip, Kathryn Bigelow's tale of the hunt for Bin Laden quickly became political dynamite
When the Obama re-election machine began gearing up last winter, its presumed winning formula had the brevity of a high-concept Hollywood pitch: "General Motors is alive, Osama bin Laden is dead."
The mantra's first part received an unexpected iteration during half-time at the Super Bowl when, in an ad promoting the Us car industry, no less an icon than Clint Eastwood told the huge TV audience that Detroit had weathered the Great Recession and was coming back. (Apparently unaware he'd been cast as Obama's surrogate, the star would make amends by grotesquely lecturing the president during the Republican convention.) Meanwhile, the mantra's second part was also in the works, in the form of Kathryn Bigelow's big-budget thriller about Bin Laden's assassination; not yet named Zero Dark Thirty, the...

One title you'll notice in the new release date section at the bottom of today's post is the extended edition of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, a film that is already too long to begin with and yet somehow they have managed to find a way to add another eight minutes to it. Simply watching this trailer for the release leads me to continue to wonder what they possibly could have added in of any actual substance. A report from Amazon France says the new release will include new opening credits as well as the following: A new version of the opening scene with the Volturi. Extended scene of Edward 's flashback as a young vampire. New scene from the honeymoon. 2 new scenes at the Cullens' house. Extended fight scene between Edward/Jacob and the wolves. New scene of Jacob taking care of his wounds. I must say,...

After the success of "Seal Team Six," National Geographic is planning a new series called "Inside Combat Rescue," reports Variety. The series marks the first time cameras have been allowed by the U.S. Air Force to follow rescue teams like Pararescuemen, Pave Hawk helicopter pilots and combat rescue officers. The reality series is based in Afghanistan over a four-month deployment. Howard T. Owens, president of National Geographic Channels told Variety that "Having a camera layout for 'Inside Combat Rescue' that was not obtrusive and allowed these PJs to do their work and save lives was crucial. We gained unrivaled access to 130 missions where 108 lives were saved." As far as "Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden" goes, that starred Cam Gigandet, Anson Mount, Freddy Rodriguez, Xzibit, Kathleen Robertson, Robert Knepper and Eddie Kaye Thomas. While the press has been full of doom-and-gloom stories about the "British film industry" (whatever that is) dying on its feet, 2012 proved to be yet another year in which the UK punched above its weight thanks to the work of adventurously non-parochial film-makers like Peter Strickland. In the extraordinary (anti)revenge thriller Katalin Varga (2009), writer/director Strickland unravelled a mythical archetype against the backdrop of the Carpathian mountains. Now, with Berberian Sound Studio (2012, Artificial Eye, 15), he turns his eye towards Italy and the evocatively vivid giallo-inflected horrors of Mario Bava, Dario Argento et al, which set the stylish template for a generation of saleably derivative American 70s schlockers.

So the three-movie idea is more likely down to financial demands than creative ones, and the now-notorious higher frame rate reduces cinematic spectacle to pin-sharp TV movie, but this is terrifically wrought escapism. ★★☆☆☆ An ever so cynical, pre-award season release riffing on potential Academy Award nominee Zero Dark Thirty (2012), John Stockwell's Codename: Operation Geronimo (aka Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden, 2012) - from the producer of 2010's The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar winner - suffers from both an underwhelming, TV-friendly cast and some similarly below average direction. Ostensibly retelling the real-life events that led up to (and included) the assassination of former public enemy #1 Osama Bin Laden, the film attempts to capture the nail-biting tension of those fateful events last May, but with precious little style or panache.

Seven Psychopaths (15)
(Martin McDonagh, 2012, Us) Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, Tom Waits. 110 mins
It's a cult movie formula to die for: Pulp Fiction meets the Coens meets Adaptation, with postmodern high-jinks, wacky crime thrills and lashings of irreverent comedy. This Harvey Weinstein-produced docudrama borrows from The Hurt Locker and Homeland to give us a grisly rendition of a decisive moment in the war on terror
This film is the point at which Harvey Weinstein, exploitation-movie impresario extraordinaire, meets Harvey Weinstein, Democratic big-money donor and activist. On the one hand, Weinstein is working an old grindhouse promotional gambit: riding the publicity coattails of a more prestigious and expensive feature of similar theme or provenance – in this case Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty – and attempting to reach the screens before it, the better to dine, vampirishly, on a percentage of the profits. The Democratic activist in Weinstein, meanwhile, was surely horrified when Columbia delayed the Bigelow picture until after the presidential election, and was damned if his version wasn't going to make some sort of splash before that date.
So here we are. Seal Team 6 could only rate as propaganda in a toxic,...

Weinstein tells me that the Hurricane Sandy postponement left him feeling blue, and when the hotel manager asked why and learned of the scrapped screening, the manager offered up his 50-inch screen in a ballroom overlooking the White House and the Washington Monument, and Weinstein made a decision. “The show must go on,” he said. “We don’t want anybody to be unsafe, but if you’re just walking across the street or down the block, why not come?...

The Weinstein Company's "Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden" premieres on the National Geographic Channel on Sunday, November 4th, marking the first foray into an original scripted film for a network previously associated with nature programming. It's also a new brush with controversy for NatGeo, with the film's timing -- two days before the presidential election -- leading some to speculate that it was calculated as a last-minute effort to rally more support for President Obama by dramatizing one of his major achievements in office, the killing of the al-Qaeda leader responsible for the September 11th attacks. Read More: Trailer for National Geographic/Weinstein Action Film 'Seal Team Six: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden' Controversy never hurts when it comes to getting press attention, and the Weinsteins haven't been shy about publicizing any ruckus the TV movie has been provoking, calling attention to an item in the New York Post.

Watch a new clip from John Stockwell's Code Name: Geronimo focusing on the raid on Osama Bin Laden. Helmed by Stockwell from the script by Kendall Lampkin, The Weinstein Co release stars Cam Gigandet, Anson Mount, Freddy Rodriguez, Xzibit, Kenneth Miller, Kathleen Robertson, William Fichtner, Mo Gallini, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Lora Martinez-Cunningham. Code Name Geronimo tells the story from the perspective of a small contingent of Navy SEALs involved in the military incursion into Bin Laden's compound. Pic looks inside their lives as tension rises until they learn on their latest target code name Geronimo. There's no set release date for this one as yet. I don't expect this to rival the quality of Zero Dark Thirty, but it could be entertaining nonetheless. Nicolas Chartier, Zev Foreman and Tony Mark produce.

The other Osama Bin Laden capture film, Seal Team Six: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden (once titled Code Name: Geronimo) has released a new clip. It will be aired on National Geographic Channel, so it will be interesting to see what sort of ratings it gets compared to when The History Channel aired Hatfields & McCoys. There were some bigger and more well known names in that. Seal Team Six has actors like Anson Mount, William Fichtner, Cam Gigandet, Freddy Rodríguez, Robert Knepper, and...

We've known for a while now that there were two competing movies about the killing of Osama Bin Laden in development, but we've since learned that they will both premiere before the end of the year. Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty is out this December with its sights clearly set on Oscar season, but now John Stockwell's Seal Team Six (formerly known as Code Name: Geronimo) is swooping in to steal the spotlight by premiering over a month earlier... on The National Geographic Channel. Although there is some big name talent involved, the fact that it has now been relegated to made-for-tv status definitely makes it seem a lot less like a true competitor to Kathryn Bigelow's film. New trailers for both films have hit the web this week and although Zero Dark Thirty is still keeping things fairly subtle and mysterious, Seal Team Six seems to...

1.) Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica") is the latest to join the as-yet-untitled female Expendables film. She joins the previously cast Gina Carano (Haywire). Who else will join this thing? Who are the other prominent female action stars? Kate Beckinsale comes to mind. I wonder if they'll go with actresses such as Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez or Summer Glau. It would be pretty cool to see Pam Grier and Michelle Yeoh play a part and I'm sure they're looking at Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton. Variety 2.) Sienna Miller has joined the cast of Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher and will star alongside Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum. The film is based on the true story of John du Pont (Carell), the paranoid schizophrenic heir to the du Pont chemical fortune who built a wrestling training facility called Team Foxcatcher on his Pennsylvania estate. David Schultz (Ruffalo) was a longtime friend of...

While Universal and Kathryn Bigelow ducked brewing controversy around their upcoming "Zero Dark Thirty" by moving the film from its previously planned release date this month to December 19th, to avoid any charges that they were trying to influence voters over to Team Obama, Harvey Weinstein is stepping right into the fray. Earlier this year, The Weinstein Company picked up "Code Name: Geronimo"—a sort of budget version take of the same material—and now their planning to launch the subtly retitled "Seal Team Six: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden" one day before election. No one does it like Harvey... Directed by John Stockwell, the movie has the kind of cast you might guess would be assembled by the guy who made "Turistas," with the host of "Pimp My Ride," Finch from "American Pie" and the eternally cast and never remembered Cam Gigandet among the "names." Oh yeah, William Fichtner is in this too.

Cannes is, ultimately, both an exhibition of wonderful films and a celebration of the very medium, but there’s a very good amount of business taking place after the screenings finish — and, many times, for films that don’t even play in competition. So, as things kick off over in France, Variety reports that The Weinstein Company have procured international rights to The Sapphires, a music biopic — starring, most notably, Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) — that will play as part of the festival’s Midnight Screenings.
The film tells of four Aboriginal girls (Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens, and Miranda Tapsell) that are snatched up by a rowdy Irish producer (O’Dowd), who takes them to Vietnam to entertain American soldiers during the war. Wayne Blair directed the film, while Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson have written the screenplay.
