Bron Media Corp. has finalized a strategic investment and partnership with Turbine Studios, home to Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe” anthology series.
Turbine is a UK-based film and television production outfit headed by “The Crown” producer Andrew Eaton, “Small Axe” producers Tracey Scoffield and David Tanner and “The Fall” producer Justin Thomson.
Under the deal, unveiled Thursday, Turbine Studios will work closely with Bron to develop, package, and produce original IP driven from the UK and Europe. Turbine will also be a strategic partner to Bron, supporting some of the company’s film and television productions across Europe.
The companies said the investment allows Bron to have greater influence in the UK market for UK commissions due to Turbine’s deep knowledge of UK and European marketplace, commissioning systems and buyers, the British production community, crew, locations, regional financial schemes, studios, creative talent, agencies and management companies.

Last night the 2014 Emmy Award winners were announced with "Breaking Bad" taking home top honors with five wings including Outstanding Drama Series, followed by "Modern Family" with three wins including Outstanding Comedy Series. FX programs "American Horror Story: Coven" and "Fargo" each took home two awards including an Outstanding Miniseries win for "Fargo". Meanwhile, new shows such as "Orange is the New Black" and "Silicon Valley" went home empty handed and for all the fanfare it received in its first season, including 12 Emmy nominations, "True Detective" only took home one win, that being for director Cary Joji Fukunaga". Personally, I don't give a lick about the Emmys, it's right there with the Grammys in terms of worthless awards shows for me. It's a show wherein people must nominate themselves and while most award shows are no better, this one is down there near the bottom for me. So, with that said,...

Because it's NBC's turn to air the Primetime Emmy Awards this year, and because the Peacock would understandably rather air its lucrative Sunday night NFL package in September, the ceremony will take place in late August again. And as an added wrinkle, this year's ceremony will actually happen on a Monday, August 25 at 8 p.m., with Seth Meyers hosting. Between now and then, Dan and I will be making our picks for both who should and will win many of the major categories — if you're wagering, keep in mind that Dan tends to be much better at predicting the winners than I am, but also that he was just as flummoxed as I by last year's winners like Jeff Daniels, Merritt Wever and Bobby Cannavale — starting with a pair of categories that have taken on new shape and importance this year. After TV-movies and miniseries were lumped together into one...

The 2014 Emmy Award nominations were announced today and led by HBO's "Game of Thrones" with 19 total nominations. New show "Fargo" scored 18, followed by "American Horror Story", "Breaking Bad", The Normal Heart and not too far down the line "True Detective" with 12. The one show I love and continue to watch, "Hannibal" received zero nominations, but then again, I have never paid too much attention to the Emmys, primarily because people have to nominate themselves, something I've never understood. "Game of Thrones" 19 "Fargo" 18 "American Horror Story: Coven" 17 "Breaking Bad" 16 "The Normal Heart" 16 "Saturday Night Live" 14 "House of Cards" 13 "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" 12 "Downton Abbey" 12 "Orange Is the New Black" 12 From a network perspective, leading the pack was HBO, coming in just one nomination shy of a 100 and it wasn't even a close race with CBS coming in second with 47. HBO 99 CBS 47 NBC 46 FX Networks 45 ABC 37 The top shelf nominations are listed...

Over the past couple years, HBO has been a quiet-but-steady presence at the Cannes Film Festival, where they unspool their movies out of competition (with Steven Soderbergh's "Behind The Candelabra" an exception in 2013). "Hemingway & Gellhorn," "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," "Seduced And Abandoned"—those are the movies that have joined Soderbergh's in walking the red carpet in the south of France. And while nothing is official, we'd lay down some good money that the same will happen for "The Normal Heart." But even if not, you won't have to wait long to see this one for yourself. From "Glee" and "American Horror Story"-creator Ryan Murphy, based on the acclaimed play by Larry Kramer and starring Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons and Julia Roberts, the drama tells the story of the onset of the HIV-aids crisis in New York City in the early 1980s. It will highlight...

The 45th Annual NAACP Image Awards went off without a hitch earlier this evening (February 22) with "12 Years a Slave" continuing to make waves snagging the biggest prize of the night.
Before her film won Outstanding Motion Picture, the gorgeous Lupita Nyong'o added another piece of hardware to her already impressive collection taking home a trophy for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, while Kerry Washington snagged up her second Image Award with a win for Best Actress in a Dramatic Series. Kerry's show "Scandal" also won Outstanding Drama Series.
In addition, the hilarious Kevin Hart took home Entertainer of the Year, while Oprah Winfrey paid tribute to the late Nelson Mandela with a touching speech and musical dedication.
"He was everything we have all have heard and more. He was humble and he was unscathed by any kind of bitterness after all that we know he's been through," Winfrey said.

Woot woot! My pick to win Best Director at the Oscars took home the Feature Film trophy at the recently concluded Directors Guild of America awards. And it's truly deserving! Cuaron defied gravity, yes pun intended, to create "Gravity," a movie grounded in sci-fi realism that many directors before him (including James Cameron) were saying that it would be hard to do. But Cuaron did it, and did it extremely well! So hats off to "Gravity" and Cuaron's direction!

He joins the previously announced Ben Foster, Chris O'Dowd, Guillaume Canet, Jesse Plemons and Lee Pace. Frears' take, which does not yet have a title, will arrive from Working Title Films with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner producing. Known for a diverse array of films like High Fidelity , The Queen and Dirty Pretty Things , Frears' latest is the HBO telefilm Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight . Netflix's critical hit "Orange Is the New Black" picked up four nominations for the 2014 Writers Guild Awards -- where it's entered as a comedy series.
The show (and its cast) is entered in the drama field for some other upcoming awards shows, including the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. It's a bit of a tweener show, mixing both comedy and drama, but as there are no "dramedy" awards anywhere, it's a comedy for writing purposes.
Other multiple nominees for the WGA Awards include "Breaking Bad," "Modern Family," "30 Rock," "Masters of Sex," "The Simpsons" and another Netflix series, "House of Cards."
The full list of series nominees is below. You can go here to see all the WGA TV and radio nominees, including those for news and children's programming. The awards are scheduled for Feb. 1.

Capturing the magnetic, larger than life personality of Muhammad Ali has been something only a few actors have tried over the years, including Will Smith, Darius McCrary and Terrence Howard. And while the boxing legend and sports world superstar can be imitated, he simply can't be duplicated. So call it a savvy move on the part of screenwriter Shawn Slovo and director Stephen Frears to avoid that issue altogether in "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," which defers to archival footage to present the titular subject in the dramatized story of his fight against his conviction of avoiding the Vietnam War draft, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison. Unfortunately, that archival material is also the most dramatically potent in a film that presents the story respectfully, if not particularly compellingly. Benjamin Walker leads the film as Kevin Connolly, a new clerk in the office of Supreme Court veteran...

Christopher Plummer certainly doesn't have the title role in "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," but he has as much of the spotlight.
The "Beginners" Oscar winner is a pivotal player in the true HBO drama premiering Saturday, Oct. 5. Directed by Stephen Frears ("The Queen"), the film recalls the early 1970s deliberations by Supreme Court justices when iconic boxer Ali wanted his case heard after he was banned from the sport for being a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War.
Plummer plays Justice John Harlan II, whose mind met those of such legends as Warren E. Burger (Frank Langella) and Thurgood Marshall (Danny Glover) in debating how to proceed. Offered the Burger role first, Plummer considers himself "so lucky" things evolved as they did.

A compelling new film documenting Muhammad Ali's battle against the Vietnam war draft shows the fighter's ongoing relevance, in and out of the ring
"Nobody sings Dylan like Dylan" was how the record company's slogan put it back in the 1960s. Equally, nobody plays Ali like Ali, then or now. So it was sensible of the director Stephen Frears and the screenwriter Shawn Slovo to mix original newsreel footage with newly shot material when putting together their film Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight, which they presented to an audience at the British Film Institute on Tuesday night.
Its Us premiere took place 24 hours later in Louisville, Kentucky, Ali's home town, kicking off Three Days of Greatness, a gala at which humanitarian awards were presented in the boxer's name to recipients including Jimmy Carter and Christina Aguilera. When Muhammad Ali refused the draft, claiming status as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, the case went all the way to the Supreme Court. What happened when it landed there, and how the decision was made to allow the professional boxer the religious freedom not to fight — a decision that went through a dramatic reversal just as the majority opinion was being written — is the subject of the HBO film Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight, starring Christopher Plummer as the justice who changed the tide, and Benjamin Walker as the law clerk who convinced him to do so. Walker called from London, where he's currently shooting Ron Howard's latest film, In the Heart of the Sea, to chat with Vulture about porn screenings, punching Pablo Schreiber, and eating Chris Hemsworth. You've played a couple of presidents (granted, one was also a vampire hunter), and now you're playing a...

Washington, Oct er 2: Christopher Plummer will be playing the role of a Us Supreme Court justice in HBO upcoming film 'Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight,' it has been revealed.
Plummer, who is famous for his portrayal of a noble-browed patriarch in 'The Sound of Music,' will play the role of John Harlan II, the Washington Times reported.
Harlan II was among the justices who decided in 1971 whether Ali's conviction for refusing to be drafted because of his Muslim-based objections should be upheld or overturned.
Plummer had earlier said that he doesn't think retirement exists in the acting profession, and if someone.

Christopher Plummer gives a bemused thumbs-up to the latest choice to succeed him in "The Sound of Music."
The "Beginners" Oscar winner starred in the tuneful, widely loved 1965 movie as Captain Von Trapp, patriarch of a singing family. When the awards season rolls around, you can't count out Judi Dench. She's a seven time Oscar nominee (winning in 1999 for "Shakespeare In Love"), a beloved legend and simply a damn good actress. So even though this new poster for her upcoming "Philomena" has caused our blood sugar level to rise, again, she's not one to dismiss no matter how treacly the material might look like. Directed by Stephen Frears and co-starring Steve Coogan, the movie is based on Martin Sixsmith's book "The Lost Child of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and a 50 Year Search," and tells the true of an Irish woman who searches for the illegimate son she was forced to give up when she was in a convent. Cue hankies. While this might be slam dunk, the wildcard here is Frears, whose last few movies — "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," "Lay The Favorite," and "Tamara Drewe" — don't inspire much confidence.

Bill Siegel's documentary "The Trials of Muhammad Ali," currently in theaters, covers the legendary boxer's Supreme Court battle over his refusal to be conscripted to fight in the Vietnam War. HBO will be offering a scripted take on the same subject when it premieres "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight" on Saturday, October 5th at 8pm. Directed by Stephen Frears and written by Shawn Slovo, the film stars Christopher Plummer, Frank Langella, Danny Glover, Ed Begley Jr. and others as the legal figures involved in the case, though Ali appears only on archival footage. The film premiered as a special screening at Cannes earlier this year.

A first full trailer has arrived for Stephen Frears' "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," centering on Heavy Weight champ Ali's 1967 decision to refuse to enlist for Vietnam service -- which had legal ramifications all the way to the Supreme Court. Christopher Plummer, Danny Glover, Frank Langella and more star. Watch below. Frears ("Philomena," "The Queen") made the decision to not cast an actor to play Ali -- instead, only archival footage of the famed boxer is used in the film. Glover plays Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Plummer plays Justice Marshall Harlan and Langella is Chief Justice Warren Burger. Ed Begley Jr., Bob Balaban, Kathleen Chalfant and Barry Levinson also star. After premiering at Cannes earlier this year, the film will debut October 5 on HBO.

HBO Films has released a first full trailer for Stephen Frears' Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight. The film takes place in 1967, as then Heavy Weight Champion of the World Muhammad Ali refused to enlist and go fight for the USA in Vietnam; his objections to the war were very public, and he was convicted and sentenced to serve time in prison, during which he appealed his case, which would go all the way to the Supreme Court. This was all around the time the public began turning against the war, and thus support for Ali grew. Eventually, some years later, the Supreme Court would reverse his conviction. HBO has released the first trailer for a new film they have made called Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight. It tells the story of Ali's Supreme Court battle to stay out of the Vietnam War.
If you're not familiar with the backstory, the boxer was drafted in the ’60s but he refused to go due to his religion and went on to declare himself a conscientious objector. Because of those actions, he was convicted of draft evasion and his title and boxing license were taken away from him. He went on to appeal the conviction which ended up in the Supreme Court, which is where the movie picks up.
It stars Christopher Plummer, Frank Langella, and Danny Glover, who play some of the Supreme Court justices. Ali is not played by any actor in the film. The filmmakers got really clever, and the boxing legend only appears in archival footage. Here's...

Though the film didn't get much buzz out of the Cannes Film Festival, the HBO Films drama Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight from director Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, The Queen) is coming to the cable network this fall. Now a teaser trailer has surfaced for the courtroom drama that chronicles Ali's battle in the Supreme Court after he was drafted into the Vietnam War at the height of his boxing fame, but refused to fight as an objector of the war itself. However, the film mostly focuses on the relationship between Justice Harlan (Christopher Plummer) and his clerk (Benjamin Walker), and some found that disappointing. The teaser trailer for Stephen Frears' Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight from HBO (via Bleeding Cool): Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight looks at Muhammad Ali’s historic Supreme Court battle from behind closed doors. HBO made a splash at Cannes with Steven Soderbergh's "Behind the Candelabra," its glitzy, funny, tragic biopic of Liberace (Michael Douglas) by way of his young lover Scott Thorson (Matt Damon). But the premium network also had another, admittedly less sexy film playing at the festival -- Stephen Frears' "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," about the boxing legend's Supreme Court case over his right to not be drafted into fighting in the Vietnam War. No one plays Ali in the film, wisely -- it instead uses real footage of the man while focusing on the behind-closed-doors legal process, with Christopher Plummer, Frank Langella, Ed Begley, Jr. and Danny Glover playing justices. The film's set to premiere on HBO on Saturday, October 5th at 8pm.

Exclusive: Director Stephen Frears, in Hollywood promoting his HBO film Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight at TCA, is moving fast on another fact-based movie based on an iconic athlete. I’m told that Frears and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner have teamed up on a feature film on the doping scandal that enveloped the Tour de France and led to the downfall of 7-time champion Lance Armstrong in the biggest doping scandal in the history of sports. I’m still trying to get all the details, but they are eyeing a start as soon as this fall on the movie. That makes Frears a surprise entry in a crowded field, and that doesn’t even factor in a Sony Pictures Classics deal this week to release the documentary The Armstrong Lie. There are two other dramatic projects on Armstrong at studios which seemed to have gotten a good head start on Frears.

Although two different biopics on Lance Armstrong are already said to be in the works in addition to a feature documentary, Deadline is reporting that director Stephen Frears has his own plans for a Armstrong film and that production could begin as early as this fall with Ben Foster in the lead. The previously-announced dueling Armstrong biopics include one by director Jay Roach with a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns and one from Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions that adapts Juliet...

How do you make a Muhammad Ali movie without Muhammad Ali? That's one of the challenges for HBO's "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," directed by Oscar nominee Stephen Frears ("The Queen"), which revisits a famous Supreme Court battle from 1971 involving the appeal of Ali's criminal conviction after refusing to fight in the Vietnam War.
All of the film's footage of Ali was pulled from archives (similar to what Frears has done in past films, like with Princess Diana in "The Queen") and the story focuses primarily on Supreme Court judges and clerks working on the case.
"The idea of casting anybody to play Muhammad Ali seemed so difficult and so distracting in a way," Frears said during a discussion at the TCA summer press tour.
Instead the film stars Christopher Plummer as John Harlan II, Frank Langella as Chief Justice Warren E. Burger and Benjamin Walker as Harlan's new clerk, Kevin Connolly.

HBO has two boxing-related films in its upcoming schedule. The first, the Stephen Frears-directed scripted feature "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," comes to the network after a premiere at Cannes. The second (and more exciting) is the Spike Lee-directed "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth," a filmed version of Tyson's Broadway one-man show with cinematography by Matthew Libatique that's currently being edited and will premiere later this year. Lee and Tyson, who appeared together at TCA, had an unexpectedly winning odd-couple dynamic on stage, with Lee playing the tough and being protective of his subject, scolding the crowd for not applauding when Tyson sat down, with Tyson scoffing "you don't need to clap." When asked how much of the show was scripted versus outlined and improvised from, Tyson said "it's pretty scripted, but I also ad-lib," and Lee followed with the info that Mike's wife's Kiki wrote the script,...

Cannes, France — The annual Cannes festival on the French Riviera is the grandest platform in the world for the highest ambitions of film, a place where the art form is worshipped with wild passion and adoring reverence. Movies are projected pristinely in regal theaters, where they're greeted by the world's cinephiles with feverish excitement.
But even at this bastion of the big screen, director after director has come through preaching the opportunities of the small screen. Up and down the Croisette, talk of TV's ascendance is rampant.
"The way that things are moving because of the financing of films, television has almost become where a lot of people seek creativity," said Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, who premiered at the festival his Bangkok noir "Only God Forgives," starring Ryan Gosling. "It's opened up a whole new arena."

Plastic surgeons are the new secular priests
The Cannes programmers give guests a religion they can at least relate to. First came La Grande Bellezza, Paolo Sorrentino's swooning fresco of Italian high society, in which an exacting cosmetic surgeon dispenses Botox injections as though he's offering holy sacrament. Then, not 24 hours later, came the sight of Rob Lowe's smirking little Frankenstein, resplendent in a Farrah Fawcett hairdo, in Behind the Candelabra. Lowe's character is tender, wise and knows what is right. He comes to make Matt Damon's chauffeur into Liberace's own image. It's what the man upstairs demands. Damon's response: "I suppose I should be flattered.

If further evidence were needed that the lines between TV and film are becoming less and less visible, Cannes has provided a decent opportunity. Last year saw "Hemingway & Gellhorn" get an out-of-competition screening, whereas this year went one better, and has seen Steven Soderbergh's "Behind The Candelabra" pick up some of the best reviews of the festival. But the trouble with the Liberace biopic getting so much attention is that it's overshadowed the other HBO movie, "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," which screened this morning to virtually no buzz, and which has just debuted its first three pieces of footage. Written by Shawn Slovo ("Catch A Fire"), and directed by Stephen Frears, it tells the story of the Supreme Court debate over the great boxer's conscientious objection to fighting in Vietnam, focusing in particular on the relationship between the torn Justice Harlan (Christopher Plummer) and his clerk (Benjamin Walker: Vampire Hunter). Stephen Frears's lightweight account of Ali's stand over Vietnam does scant justice to its charismatic central protagonist
In 1967, Muhammad Ali was stripped of his world heavyweight title and sentenced to three years incarceration after ruling himself out of the Vietnam war. The appeal process dragged on for three years, through a good portion of his boxing prime, before it reached the supreme court. The fate of the era's most celebrated and contentious African-American was now in the hands of a gang of old, white patricians, few of whom would be likely to look on him kindly.
The fact that Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight elects to ignore Ali in favour of the old, white patricians need not necessarily be cause for concern. There are many ways to skin a cat and various angles into a good story. But the new film from Stephen Frears, which played in a special screening...

There will be no British winner of the biggest prize in cinema outside of the Oscars this year. Cannes Artistic Director Thierry Frémaux has failed to include any British films in the competition line-up for the coveted Palme d'Or. British interest in the “official selection” of Cannes – made up of the Competition Films, the Un Certain Regard sidebar, and special screenings – is limited to an out-of-competition slot for Stephen Frears's Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight, about the boxer's refusal to go to Vietnam. British director Lynne Ramsay is a member of the jury.

From Roman Polanski to James Franco, by way of the Coen brothers and a sneaky encore from Steven Soderbergh, there's plenty to look forward to at this year's festival
