Despite being scheduled to launch this year, Sony has remained remarkably quiet about God of War: Ragnarök.
The sequel – which will presumably see Kratos and Atreus go to war against the Norse gods following the death of Odin’s son Baldur – was first revealed last year during a special digital-only summer showcase and fans have heard next to nothing about the anticipated title ever since. Long periods of silence such as these often precede news of a delay (or worse), and while we don’t for a moment think that the next installment is in any danger of being cancelled, being pushed back several months is definitely possible. Developer Santa Monica has never given a specific release date beyond an incredibly vague 2021, though, so for all intents and purposes, a return to Midgard is still projected to go ahead as planned.

Believe it or not, God of War‘s central character hasn’t always been a calm (mostly) and subdued hermit. In his younger years, in fact, gaming’s angriest man had just one concern – the complete destruction of an entire deific pantheon as penance for his wife and child’s murder. It was Kratos himself, of course, who sent his family to an early grave as a result of Ares’ trickery, an event that he’s perpetually reminded of by way of the human ashes bonded to his skin.
Not exactly a torrid past one can easily put behind them, then, but the Ghost of Sparta finds some semblance of peace within himself by relocating to the land of Midgard whereupon he starts a new family with wife Faye and son Atreus. Older, wizened and sporting an impressively groomed beard, Kratos has visibly aged by the events of 2018’s soft reboot,...

God of War has become one of the flagship IPs in Sony‘s loaded arsenal. We’ve had the pleasure of following the main character Kratos go from being consumed with rage in 2005 to trekking across mythologies and learning how to be a father in 2018. It’s a remarkable story of growth, the likes of which […]

Whether it be in the context of box office cinema, small scale television or even animated roles, actors are replaced all the time for myriad reasons. Directorial changes, availability (or lack thereof) and untimely deaths often crop up as some of the most common obstacles standing in the way of consistency though sometimes, it seems, professionals are unceremoniously replaced without even the slightest courtesy.
That appears to have been the case with Tc Carson, at least, who has revealed in a recent interview with YouTuber djvlad why he was unable to reprise the role of Kratos in Sony Santa Monica’s God of War soft reboot. While we’d highly recommend watching the series for yourself (link below) Carson, a well-known singer and voice actor, recalls the reason for his not being asked to return as a relatively straightforward one.

The long take — a sequence shot in one unbroken camera move — isn’t easy to pull off. Many films are remembered for such virtuosity. Think Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rope,” which appears as one continuous take; the Battle of Dunkirk shot in the middle of Joe Wright’s “Atonement”; and the 17-minute unbroken visual at the beginning of Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity.”
This year we can add a video game to that pantheon: The latest iteration of “God of War,” directed by Corly Barlog and shot by cinematographer Dori Arazi. The Sony Interactive Entertainment game, developed by Santa Monica Studio and released for the Playstation 4 console, is the eighth chapter of the action-adventure franchise that debuted in 2005.
“God of War” is made up of 100 long takes, totaling 25 to 35 hours of game play. “I had the strong instinct that not having a cut, especially as the game was played over time, would create a sense of immediacy,...

Right before director Shane Black offers his take on the feared space hunter, fans in the Czech Republic will be treated to upgraded re-releases of the first three films in the long-running Predator franchise.
4K Ultra HD releases have been announced for 1987’s Predator, 1990’s Predator 2 and 2010’s Predators, plus all three films will also be sold together in special Blu-ray Steelbook. On top of that, the original will be getting its own 3D Blu-ray and 4K Steelbooks. An August 29th release date has been set for all of the above, albeit only in the Czech Republic so far.
Though audiences elsewhere may be disappointed by the limited regional availability of these fancy new reissues, this news could also be regarded as a sign that similar announcements may follow for the rest of the world. As such, fans in North America shouldn’t be surprised if they’re given...

God of War is a triumphant return to the series, but this isn’t the furious rampage we’ve known before. Unlike the stagnancy growing among other franchises in the genre, God of War has learned to evolve in these past five years, creating a more thoughtful, storytelling-based approach. But it doesn’t just craft one of the most heartfelt father-son stories in years, the game consistently delivers on almost every other area perfectly, while simultaneously holding onto the core of its predecessors and the fantastical nature of what made God of War successful in the first place.
God of War is seemingly absent of its puddle deep, annoying protagonist killing everything that breathes. Instead a roughed, mentally withered Kratos built of experience and stories. As the director, Cory Barlog, said himself, “Kratos was an angry lump of muscle, I made him a struggling father”. However, his roots haven’t been forgotten,...

After lighting up CinemaCon with “lots of blood, action and explosions,” things are finally looking up for The Predator.
Having undergone extensive reshoots in Vancouver earlier this year and watched a pair of release dates fall by the wayside, the Shane Black-directed reboot seems to have found its footing, due in no small part to a volatile teaser trailer.
Said to take place between the events of Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010), the flubbed 20th Century Fox reboot/sequel, the first footage from The Predator saw the “universe’s most lethal hunters” enter “small-town suburbia…deadlier than ever before.”
Director and co-writer Shane Black (Iron Man 3) explained last week that his reimagining would both reinvent the film series and honour the previous instalments, saying while his interpretation will, of course, revolve around a hunt, it will also explore what happens when “the Predators get a little more ambitious.”

God of War is what happens when you take a lot of great ideas established elsewhere and throw a bunch of money at a hugely talented team – in this case, Santa Monica Studios – with the purpose of putting those ideas into a coherent whole. Sometimes the best games are like this: nothing mechanically new under the bonnet, but so exquisitely refined and thoughtfully constructed that they become the new gold standard.
God of War resonates with me personally because it brings to mind two of my all-time favourite games. One is familiar to anyone with good gaming taste: Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was lauded on its release last year, and went on to sweep the board at the Baftas. The other comparison, which I could never shake from my mind as I skipped merrily into Helheim, is Creative Assembly’s underrated last-gen oddity, Viking: Battle for Asgard.

2018 is going to be a big year for gaming. With Yakuza 6: The Song of Life and God of War having already been released, the rest of the year looks very exciting with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Red Dead Redemption 2, Kingdom Hearts III, and Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch still to look forward to. This month sees the release of a few new games, but it seems to be the month for remasters and definitive releases. Here’s my top picks for May’s upcoming releases.

Microsoft is planning to hire a principal program manager to staff and run an unannounced studio in Santa Monica, Calif., according to a public job posting at the console manufacturer.
Though the posting is light on project details, the qualifications listed — which include “a knowledge and understanding of the process of building new IP,” and “experience shipping high quality titles at Aaaa standards” — suggests that this new branch would be responsible for producing a new first-party blockbuster franchise to bolster the Xbox brand.
The listing also calls for “10+ years of experience in the gaming industry,” and “4+ years of experience as a lead/executive producer level-or-above,” as well as “live ops and multiplayer experience,” suggesting that the project is still in nascent stages, and still requires staffing on all levels.

There’s been a notable uptick in Hollywood stories revolving around the father figure – be it Tomb Raider or A Wrinkle in Time. Hell, even Sony’s wildly successful God of War had Kratos take on dad duties in what quickly became a radical reinvention of the venerable franchise.
But it seems we won’t be adding Deadpool 2 to the list anytime soon. As Ryan Reynolds tells Entertainment Weekly, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick originally envisioned Wade Wilson as a father, only to scrap the idea before it could gain any significant traction.
Reynolds holds a writing credit for the blockbuster sequel, so it’s not all that surprising to learn that he worked in close collaboration with Reese and Wernick when deciding what’s next for the Merc With a Mouth. And despite some early brainstorming, it seems fatherhood isn’t on the cards after all.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Pacific Rim screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton discuss their upcoming film projects, including the planned movie adaptation of the God Of War video game franchise. The duo previously stated that the film will be an origin story for protagonist Kratos, similar to Batman Begins, and will be a more "grounded" take on the character. Here, Dunstan gives an update on the adaptation, which he says has been "so fun" working on. "It’s bad ass. It’s been so fun. Working with that team, they have been just so supportive. They want to get this movie to the screen, so we have been doing our part and we’re very much in the trenches right now delivering page after page after page to make that a reality." When asked how God Of War will compare to other recent "swords and sandals" films such as Immortals...

Legendary’s Waterproof, got stuck in pre-production limbo for several thousand years is now in the hands of new writers – Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, writers of Saw 4, 5, 6 and 7 have been hired to do a rewrite.

Now comes word that the horror writing duo Melton and Dunstan will turn Waterproof into a supernatural thriller.

Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, have been hired by Legendary Pictures to rewrite the supernatural thriller Waterproof. It’s their second recent rewrite job for Legendary, after they came in to do work on the Guillermo del Toro-directed Pacific Rim. In Waterproof, a teen boy accidentally unleashes monsters on his small town after finding an order form in an old comic book. The scribes, who are currently writing Rise for Warner Bros and God Of War for Universal, are best known for writing Saw 4, 5, 6 and 7. Dunstan just directed their script The Collection, a film that puts them back in the fright game. It just had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin. The scribes are repped by Wme and Underground. Here’s the new trailer for The Collection:...
