The Oldenburg Film Festival has picked two iconoclast filmmakers to honor for its 30th anniversary edition: French actor/director Isild Le Besco and Canadian producer Jen Gatien. Both women have carved out unique paths in independent cinema, defying conventions and expectations.
Le Besco has worked in front of the camera since she was eight, and by her early 20s was already a face of French auteur cinema, with two César nominations — for her performances in Benoît Jacquot’s Sade (2000) and Cédric Kahn’s Roberto Succo (2001) and a best actress honor in Venice for Jacquot’s L’Intouchable (2006).
Her directorial debut, 2004’s Demi-Tarif (Half-Price), the story of three young siblings, Romeo (Kolia Litscher), Launa (Lila Salet), and the youngest, Leo (Cindy David), left on their own in a rundown Paris apartment, was an unmediated look into the world of childhood and drew praise from the likes of Mia Hansen-Løve, whose review,...

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.
Thankfully, though, the door swung back open in...

Riley Keough has landed the title role in the upcoming Amazon series “Daisy Jones & The Six,” Variety has learned. In addition, Niki Caro has signed on to direct multiple episodes along with executive producing the series.
Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the series is a musical drama detailing the rise and fall of a renowned rock band in the 1970s. Keough’s Jones is described as born into privilege but ignored by her selfish parents. She is a spirited and enigmatic singer/songwriter who comes of age and rises to rock superstardom against the backdrop of the L.A. music scene in the 1970s.
This is not Keough’s first time in a project exploring music stardom, with the actress making her onscreen debut in the 2010 feature “The Runaways,” based on the all-female ’70s band of the same name. She went on...

Welcome back, readers! We have another edition of our From Streams to Screams series we’ll be running throughout the month of October. Since there are thousands of genre films out there on a variety of digital platforms, I’ve gone ahead and put together this list of 18 fang-tastic vampire movies that genre fans should enjoy watching this Halloween season, including a great mix of classic films and some new genre offerings as well. And while I generally try to avoid including television series, I would be remiss if I didn’t include the original Dark Shadows here, especially since Hulu currently has all 26 seasons streaming on their platform. Happy streaming, everyone!
Dark Shadows: The Entire Series (Streaming on Hulu)
With its alluring tales of Gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became one of the most popular daytime series of all time. Since first airing on ABC-tv from 1966 to...

Let the games begin! We have clips from IFC Midnight's Road Games and Slasher Season 1, which will both be released on Blu-ray by Scream Factory on July 12th.
Road Games Blu-ray / DVD: "After a disastrous summer trip, Jack (Andrew Simpson, Rebellion) finds himself hitchhiking through the sun-drenched rural French countryside with nothing but his British passport. Unaware of dangers that are plaguing the roads, he tries without much success to get home. Along the way, he partners with another hitchhiker, a beautiful French girl, Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume, Kiss of the Damned). But when they accept a ride from a local oddball (Frédéric Pierrot, The Returned), the pair find themselves thrown in a deadly game of cat and mouse in which nothing is what it seems. Bursting with nonstop twists and turns and an undercurrent of Hitchcockian malice, this riveting psychological thriller is a hell of a ride.

Hitchin’ a Ride: Pastoll’s Debut an Assortment of Tropes
No, it’s not a remake of the 1981 Richard Franklin thriller starring Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, but Abner Pastoll’s debut borrows the title, along with elements from a number of other, far better narratives for Road Games. Curiously, for most of the running time, his characters are actually not even on the road, but this is only one of several aggravating details in a film laboring to conjure thrills solely through the use of withholding pertinent information from the audience for an improbable reveal. Though it has all the right elements to convey technical proficiency, this is a watered down genre treatment which does disservice to notable cast members, which includes amongst its talent the strange plumage of 80s cult star Barbara Crampton.

Days Go By: Cassavetes Returns with Industry Commentary
It’s a tale as old as cinema itself, the dismissive and apathetic attitude towards ageing women in a youth obsessed, commodified film industry. And yet, director Zoe Cassavetes manages to make her own worthwhile entry with Day Out of Days, a project conceived, developed, and co-written with lead actress Alexia Landeau. As impossibly difficult as the landscape is for an actress, the female director suffers comparable obstacles in sustaining a lucrative filmmaking career, and it’s been eight years since Cassavetes made her stunningly eloquent debut with 2007’s Broken English, a film featuring Parker Posey in a career best turn. Whatever the cause of the hiatus (though she’s turned out several short films in the interim), this sophomore feature is a more than welcome return from a director with a particular knack for capturing characters at a difficult crossroads. Welcome to another horror/sci-fi round-up! This time around we have word of two big cast confirmations for Independence Day 2, details on Scream Factory's Deep in the Darkness Blu-ray / DVD release, and information on the new Blanc/Biehn Productions film, Treachery.
Independence Day 2: Last night it was revealed that the first official cast member had signed on to star in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2, the sequel to his 1996 film that featured massive alien-induced destruction and larger-than-life characters. It's now been confirmed that one of those characters will be coming back, as Emmerich tweeted last night that Jeff Goldblum will appear in the sequel, likely reprising his role as the brainy and dryly humorous David Levinson, who teamed up with fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller to take down the mothership in the original film. Smith will not be coming back to reprise his role as Steven.

While still an active member of what I would call a French-u.S galpal filmmaker clique, the name of Zoe Cassavetes has painfully been absent from the indie scene since her feature film debut Broken English (2007) landed in Park City. Working with the ageism theme, more specifically, the drawbacks of working as an actress in/against/for the Hollywood system that were recently touched upon in Olivier Assayas’ Sils Maria and David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, Cassavetes muse and co-writer Alexia Landeau (also featured in sister Xan Cassavetes’ Kiss of the Damned) has according to the Deadline folks toplined Cassavetes’ sophomore film. Melanie Griffith, Eddie Izzard, Cheyenne Jackson, Vincent Kartheiser, Alessandro Nivola, Brooke Smith and Bellamy Young also star in the pic that went went into production last month. Produced by Gina Kwon (The Future) and Kate Roughan, look for Day Out Of Days to have a Sundance berth.

Exclusive: After her debut feature Broken English snagged distribution out of Sundance and a pair of Independent Spirit Award nominations, filmmaker Zoe Cassavetes linked up with actress pal Alexia Landeau to write her sophomore feature. Landeau, who appeared in Cassavetes’ first film, the 2000 short Men Make Women Crazy Theory, now leads the Day Out Of Days cast as a 40-year-old actress struggling to make it in the cutthroat business of Hollywood while contending with ever-youthful competition.
Joining Landeau in Day Out Of Days are Melanie Griffith, Eddie Izzard, Cheyenne Jackson, Vincent Kartheiser, Alessandro Nivola, Brooke Smith and Bellamy Young. Cassavetes just wrapped a 17-day shoot on location in La, a production made possible by a successful $60,000 FundAnything crowdfunding campaign that Cassavetes and her fellow producers Gina Kwon (Camp X-Ray, The Future, The Motel, Me and You and Everyone We Know) and Kate Roughan (Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and the Farm Midwives) launched last year.

While horror fans frequently bemoan the painfully toothless state of modern vampire cinema (aka Twilight, Vampire Academy), the sub-genre's popularity has allowed some very good filmmakers to acquire funding for movies that deal with the bloodsuckers. Neil Jordan's Byzantium and Zoe Cassavetes' Kiss of the Damned are great examples: what's profitable for the big studios can sometimes lead to good things for independent productions. Which brings us, quite neatly, to Jim Jarmusch's frankly excellent vampire story called Only Lovers Left Alive.
The formula of {Jim Jarmusch + vampires + Tilda Swinton + Tom Hiddleston} should be enough to entice any half-literate horror junkie, but as a film freak who has been a Jarmusch fan since the 1980s, it's exciting to note that Only Lovers Left Alive is the writer/director at the top of his game. Now celebrating its 17th year, the Brooklyn Film Festival, which will run from May 30 through June 8 at indieScreen and Windmill Studios NYC in Williamsburg, now announces its narrative and documentary feature film line-up. This year's festival was themed "Formula," with Bff Executive Director Marco Ursino saying, "Our theme this year deals with an enigma: Is there a winning formula to communicate with the audience and ultimately create a successful independent film? We ponder this complex question by thinking about the chemistry that might ultimately achieve such a formula."With over 100 film premieres from around the world, the festival will open with two films: T.J. Misny's "Intimate Semaphores," a collection of three short stories starring Kate Lyn Sheil ("Sun Don't Shine") and Ariane Labed ("Attenberg"), and Leah Meyerhoff's "I Believe in Unicorns," starring Natalia Dyer ("Blue Like Jazz") and Peter Vack ("Kiss of the Damned").Check out the line-up below (synopses courtesy.

It’s hard to know whether Jim Jarmusch means for his latest film to be a rejoinder to the spate of vampire movies that audiences have embraced or just a highbrow addition to its ranks, but Only Lovers Left Alive is by far one of the most thoughtful movies about the lives of the undead ever made. That said, it’s not one of the most original, which is why it becomes exponentially less interesting the more it decides to be about something.

Xan Cassavetes' debut feature, Kiss of the Damned (2012) - released this week in the UK on both DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Eureka Entertainment - is a wonderfully flamboyant vampire film that manages to successfully combine genre tribute with arthouse aspirations. It's a cineliterate horror triumph that's full of smart riffs on the way the vampire mythology has been represented on screen. The film also concerns itself with wider human questions, and where they sit in the Gothic form. With its sleek, glacial aesthetics, it's surprising to see a modern genre picture look this good. CineVue's Craig Williams recently sat down with Cassavetes to discuss horror, hunger and generic transcendence.

★★★★☆We've seen a fair few vampire films do the rounds recently, but none of them are quite like Kiss of the Damned (2012), Xan Cassavetes' throwback debut. It's a hugely enjoyable and flamboyant work that combines sleek, cool aesthetics with giddy Eurotrash sensibilities. Like many notable vamp offerings, genre formalities are used as a springboard to explore wider human issues but, crucially, the director doesn't forget to have fun along the way. The real pleasure is in the way the film deals with the central tension between tribute and progress, with Cassavetes both pushing the envelope and paying her horror dues.

Xan Cassavetes has had one hell of a showbiz story. Daughter of John and Gena, she made her screen debut in her father's films Husbands and Minnie and Moskowitz. Trawling the Lower East Side art-punk scene during early 80's, she found herself at both Krs-One and Madonna's very first shows. Later, she toured for almost ten years with the group Shrine before taking up the family business in 2004 with the documentary Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession. We spoke this past fall at the incredible Strasbourg International Fantastic Film Festival, where her erotic vampire feature KIss of the Damned took the top prize. How many times do you get to write that? Twitch: Let's start with a softball question. Why chose this as your fiction debut? Well, I didn't choose it...

Despite a remarkable volume of cliched, unmemorable or otherwise awful offerings, 2013 was actually a fairly solid year for horror – especially if your tastes veer off the beaten path. While most mainstream fare ranged from passable (Evil Dead) to abominable (Texas Chainsaw 3D), alternative fare flourished, not merely offering some great, unique entertainment but introducing or establishing talent that promises to become the genre’s next great generation of creators.
While few of the films included on the list ultimately made my overall Top Ten list for the year – good as they were, competition from other films was enviably steep in 2013 – those I chose stood out or distinguished themselves, in full or in part, for offering something original, interesting, or even just particularly effective. Meanwhile, a handful of other experiences or multi-media releases enhanced my appreciation for horror in the last 12 months, which if nothing else will give fans something to...

Starring Milo Ventimiglia of "Heroes" fame and directed by Xan Cassavetes (daughter of legendary actor/director John Cassavetes), steamy vampire romp Kiss of the Damned is set to take a bite out of the UK DVD market on January 27th, 2014, courtesy of Eureka! Entertainment.
Thankfully, the only sparkles are those being worn by these erudite blood-suckers.
Synopsis:
Milo Ventimiglia ("Heroes," Rocky Balboa) plays Paolo, a screenwriter who has ensconced himself in a house far away from Hollywood in order to finish what seems like his last stab at writing a commercial screenplay. He’s easily distracted though, and after meeting the beautiful Djuna (Josephine de La Baume; Rush, One Day) during a night out, he’s inextricably infatuated. Djuna digs Paolo too, but she’s got a rare “blood disorder” that doesn’t allow her to venture out into sunlight. Scarily persistent, Milo keeps courting her until she finally relents...

Last month we took a trip to Nottingham, England's cinephile haven Broadway Cinema for four days of eclectic genre programming at the 2013 Mayhem Horror Film Festival. Check in right here for a look at some of the sights and reviews from the East Midlands' premier horror fest.
The festival kicked off on Thursday 31st October with a special screening of director Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now and Puffball, taking place in the special environs of St. Mary's Church with Roeg himself in attendance to introduce and officially open this year's event.
Topping off the evening was Vincenzo Natali's underwhelming Haunter (review here).

It’s simplicity itself, but it’s also perfection. A vertical portrait in rich black and bright white, the poster complements Alexander Payne’s widescreen, greyscale road trip rather than trying to emulate it. Bruce Dern’s Woody Grant—whose grizzled outline, with its shock of white hair like a wheat field on fire, is all we see—is a man in his twilight years, a man fading away. An enigma even to his family, his silhouette looks like a question mark. The poster comes from Blt Communications, the studio responsible for the American Hustle campaign and numerous multi-character big budget assaults on America’s billboards. When I first saw it I assumed it was a teaser that would eventually be superseded by something more conventional, but I’m impressed that Paramount Vantage kept it as their chief campaign. While The Ruins, his feature debut, didn’t open up the opportunities for this all-in-one talent pool, the best item to come out of Sundance 2006 was Carter Smith’s short Bugcrush, and the equally engaging Yearbook (we were there for the preem) was a 2011 reminder that Smith has got the goods. Reteaming with cinematographer Darren Lew, his sophomore film commenced production in March of this year (here is a rather nice set-visit journal from the book novelist) with a smart casting set comprised of Liv Tyler, Judy Greer and Cameron Monaghan, the indie-budgeted Jamie Marks Is Dead might be the fun in the woods anti-thesis of last year’s The Kings of Summer (Toy’s House) that puts a well deserved talent in the spotlight.

It’s been a long journey for this docu debut to come to fruition, and we can only imagine it’s been an even longer journey for the film’s subject and filmmaker. Darius Clark Monroe’s extremely personal docu was first on our radar when Cinereach awarded it some coin in 2008, and if we fast-forward to 2013 it loaded up in support from the folks from the Ifp Documentary Labs, the San Francisco Film Society’s Documentary Film Fund, Rooftop Films and now is offering a short glimpse at the Cannes of docu film festivals aka Ifda.

Dario Argento once said, "Horror is like a serpent; always shedding its skin, always changing. And it will always come back." Abertoir, Wales’ International Horror Festival that wrapped this past Sunday, November 10th, has been celebrating horror’s malleability and resilience for eight years.
This year you could find Argento’s operatic giallo style reinvented by French filmmakers Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani in The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears; vampires got a makeover in Kiss of the Damned and Chimeres; ghosts found new life in Ghost Graduation, Forgotten, and Soulmate; found footage was resurrected as Catholic horror in Borderlands; and creature features took a strange turn with The Station and Bad Milo.
Festival director Gaz Bailey had to watch a lot of awful films to find the best the genre had to offer. And he looks for one thing above all else when selecting a film: originality.

Saturday 5th October at Grimmfest 2013 became an unrelenting procession of the great and the gory, a steady flow of bloody productions that thrilled and unsettled audiences in equal measure. The main festival at The Dancehouse in the afternoon and evening offered more than one contender for the title as the film of Grimmfest and each one is very different. The three highlights were films that were very different in nature but shared the same great qualities; there were each intense and uncomfortable to watch at time but in very different ways. 'Kiss Of The Damned' is a beautifully gothic, incredibly engaging vampire love story that took inspiration from films of a different age focussing on the visual and the aural rather than simply the darker side of eternal life....

I’m not going to lie, I’ve had a hard time taking vampires too seriously since the advent of the Twilight and Underworld series, but there are still a few filmmakers who get it right with films like We Are the Night, Stake Land, and Let the Right One In. Falling somewhere in between on that scale of awful and enjoyable is Xan Cassavetes’s Kiss of the Damned, a film that looks quite pretty and gets some good work out of Josephine de La Baume and Milo Ventimiglia but lacks much of a story. It amounts to the cinematic equivalent of a snack for vampire movie fans, as it has just enough to it to hold them over until something with the same amount of flash but a little more substance.

3 Venues… 5 days… 36 films!
Yes, Northern England’s premier horror film festival, Grimmfest, is back for 2013, this time taking place at three venues across the north – including two in Manchester – allowing for a much bigger programme for this year. After the launch on October 2nd at Stockport Plaza, Grimmfest 2013 will continue from October 3rd – 6th, at the Dancehouse Theatre, And the Lass O’Gowrie, Manchester. There’s a number of films scheduled this year that (as of yet) haven’t played any other UK film festivals, so there’s bound to be something showing that you haven’t seen, or maybe might not, see again!
One of my good friends James Cullen Bressack is back this year with another of his films, the excellent and innovative To Jennifer, after making a huge splash last year with the controversial Hate Crime. Other highlights, for me, include Thanatamorphose, On Air, Home Sweet Home and The Butterfly Room.

Trance Eh, Trance was a film that felt like it thought it was more clever than it actually is and I really have no desire or need to see it again. I had little to say when I wrote my review back in April and I have even less to say about it now. You can read my theatrical review right here.
Welcome to the Punch Hey, it's a double dose of James McAvoy, though unlike Trance, I haven't seen Welcome to the Punch but I'd be up for giving it a spin as it seems like a perfect at-home kind of film. Here's the plot: Former criminal Jacob Sternwood is forced to return to London from his Icelandic hideaway when his son is involved in a heist gone wrong. This gives detective Max Lewinsky one last chance to catch the man he has always been after. As they face off,...
