Festival of the Living Dead is not only the latest Tubi Original, it’s the latest film from Jen and Sylvia Soska. That’s a bit of a come down for the sisters, who, after Dead Hooker in a Trunk and American Mary, were loudly proclaimed to be the future of horror. Dave Parker, who was in the same position some years back, recently used a Tubi Original, You Shouldn’t Have Let Me In to prove he can still make an entertaining film. Can the Soska Sisters do the same?
Ash and Iris are looking to do something to celebrate Ash’s birthday. Her boyfriend Kevin and some friends stop by with a birthday present, tickets to the titular Festival of the Living Dead.

George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead is in the public domain, so a lot of people have made their own sequels and remakes to the film over the decades, put out their own releases of it, colorized it, animated it, etc. It’s a property that has never been dormant… but these days it seems like its undead ghouls are livelier than ever. The George A. Romero Foundation and the Cinedigm-backed Bloody Disgusting are making a podcast sequel called The Dead. Nikyatu Jusu is directing a film sequel that will be released by MGM. Greg Nicotero is planning to make a movie about the making of Night of the Living Dead. Radar Pictures is developing a movie based on the audio-only mobile horror game BlindSide, which they’ll entitle Unseen, with sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska writing, directing and producing.
The horror feature will follow a Boston couple who wake up blind in a terrifying world they cannot recognize. They fear their sanity slipping away. They sense the presence of a strange new species, one for which light is not a priority. Michael Napoliello, Maria Frisk and Alex Power will produce for Radar. The actual mobile game has no visual, but an audio track of characters which you maneuver forward, backward, left or right.
“We have long admired Radar and the tremendous work they do as industry titans and innovators. We are very excited and honored to be partnering with this legendary team as they delve deeper into the horror genre and break new ground again. Unseen is a horror film...

The most uneven of David Cronenberg’s early commercial horror features, the 1977 “Rabid,” was nonetheless probably the biggest success among them, in large part due to the novelty value of seeing “Behind the Green Door” porn superstar and erstwhile Ivory Snow detergent-box model Marilyn Chambers in a lurid mainstream vehicle. It’s also the one ripest for remake, if only because his just-prior “Shivers” aka “They Came from Within” and ensuing “The Brood” should be left alone — largely reviled upon release, they’re now rightly considered genre classics. Lacking their outrageous ideas and cumulative narrative momentum despite some striking elements, “Rabid” nonetheless has a strong-enough basic concept to warrant revisiting.
In theory, “twisted twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are fair candidates for that job: Like Cronenberg, they’re Canadian, attracted to body-horror, and have cut their own path from micro-budget projects toward the mainstream. They also claim they dislike remakes as a rule,...

Canada’s horror auteur twins, the Soska Sisters, remade their idol David Cronenberg’s earliest and grisliest film.
Canadian filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska have been delivering artistic haymakers since they started their careers. It was back then that they self-financed, wrote, directed and starred in the the delicately titled Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Since then, they’ve also created their best and most acclaimed movie to date, American Mary (2012), while also directing a segment for The ABCs of Death 2 (2014), and two movies for WWE Films, the slasher sequel See No Evil 2 (2014) and the action thriller Vendetta (2015).
Their movies are marked by a decidedly feminist point-of-view as well as a gleeful, often outrageous use of gore and visceral horror, so it’s no surprise that they have now taken on the risk of remaking Rabid, one of the early films by their idol and fellow Canadian,...

After their second feature, American Mary, exploded on to the horror scene, Canadians writer/directors Jen and Sylvia Soska were crowned the queens of body horror. Now, some seven years after that film debuted, the sisters return to the body horror genre, taking on a remake of Rabid, a film originally helmed by the King of body horror himself – and a fellow Canadian – David Cronenberg.
However; before you all start decrying remakes and reboots, this particular take on the sexually-charged blood-lust feeding, rabies-ravaged killer-creating story is a far cry from Cronenberg’s. When horrific scenes of rape and abuse are filmed by women, are they emulating misogynist male directors, or bringing empathy and new perspectives?
About one hour into Holiday, the writing-directing debut of Swedish film-maker Isabella Eklöf, there’s a scene in which a young woman who has joined her drug dealing boyfriend and his entourage in a Turkish resort on the Aegean is subjected to harrowing sexual abuse. Another young woman is raped, twice, in the opening scenes of The Nightingale, second film from Australian writer-director Jennifer Kent, of The Babadook (2014) fame. In the last few years we’ve also seen the heroine of Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge (2017), violated and left for dead by her lover and his buddies, an art student sexually abused in Natalia Leite’s M.F.A. (2017), and a medical student raped in Jen and Sylvia Soska’s American Mary (2012).

Rabid, the classic film from horror auteur director David Cronenberg, has been remade by filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska.
Rabid may be a campy, schlocky classic from the dawning era of the horror Renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s, but the film, a breakthrough offering from director David Cronenberg – who would move on to genre masterpieces like 1981’s Scanners, 1983 cult classic Videodrome, 1983 Stephen King adaptation The Dead Zone and 1986’s The Fly – maintains a fanbase, notably siblings Jen and Sylvia Soska, who have remade the movie.
Laura Vandervoort stars in the horror remake as Rose, a young woman whose mutilated looks become miraculously restored… albeit with carnivorous consequences.

Throughout his career, special effects artist Todd Masters has always embraced any challenges that have come his way, whether it was bringing the Borg to life in Star Trek: First Contact, giving life to Billy Zane’s demonic spawn in Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight, or severely dismembering ne’er-do-wells for the Soska Sisters' American Mary, Masters has always found a way to make the impossible possible in the world of special effects.
And while those aforementioned films would be enough to establish him as something of a legend in the world of practical effects, he was the madman behind the hundreds of killer slugs and ambitious transformations we see in James Gunn’s Slither, which in itself was a miraculous feat. So, for this installment of Practical-ly Perfect, I thought it was time to pay tribute to Masters’ astonishing achievements on Slither (which also got a nifty Blu-ray...

The remake, which Jen and Sylvia Soska are co-writing with John Serge, follows Rose (Vandervoort), a woman who, following a disfiguring accident, receives an untested stem cell treatment that, while restoring her beauty, has dangerous consequences.

One of my favorite things to do during the Halloween season is to go to haunted houses, spook alleys, and haunted mazes. I just have a ton of fun at these things, especially the independent ones outside of the big theme park haunted attractions.
I've found that with the independent Halloween horror experiences, they put a lot more heart and grit into the haunted houses that they set up. Today we have a trailer for a documentary that focuses on these hardcore Halloween fans. It's called Haunter: The Art of the Scare and it puts a major focus on some of the most extreme scare experiences, where they simulate peoples fears in the most crazy and intense ways. Here's the synopsis:

Adult Babies gets an exclusive reveal at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow 2017, in anticipation of the event, actress / producer Joanne Mitchell – star of Before Dawn and Bait; and creator of Adult Babies – answers 10 scary questions…
When did your fascination for horror films begin?
I’ve been interested in horror since being a young kid. I liked to be frightened, whether it be reading a scary book, or watching one of the Hammer House of Horrors. But it wasn’t until my 30’s that I really became fascinated with the whole genre after making ‘Before Dawn’ and watching back to back movies at FrightFest!! The fans are so loyal and open minded and really know their stuff.
What was the first horror film you saw?
I’m pretty sure it was ‘The Thing’. If I remember rightly my brother and his mates had managed to get a copy and I snuck in!

Jessica Chastain is one of the most in-demand actress working today, and has a slew of dramatic parts (including next year’s Woman Walks Ahead) in the works, but now we’re hearing that she’s also attached to star in and produce a big screen adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada’s comic series, Painkiller Jane. Chastain will play the lead role of Jane Vasko, a tough New York beat cop who develops incredible healing abilities.
Painkiller Jane was created back in the ’90s and although she’s never been a mainstream character, she has crossed over with the likes of The Punisher, Hellboy and Vampirella. There was also a short-lived Sci-Fi channel TV series based on Miss Vasko’s exploits in 2007 which starred Terminator 3 actress Kristanna Loken.
